Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present technology generally relates to the field of data center liquid cooling arrangements, and more particularly to sharing data center liquid cooling resources in the event of a flow component failure. Background Art
[0002] Data centers and many computer processing facilities house a number of rack-mounted electronic processing devices. In operation, such electronic processing devices generate a large amount of heat that must be dissipated to avoid electronic component failure and to ensure continued efficient processing operations.
[0003] To this end, various liquid cooling measures have been implemented to facilitate the dissipation of heat generated by electronic processing equipment. One such measure employs liquid block cooling technology to directly cool one or more heat generating processing components. The technology utilizes a liquid cooling block having internal channels, the liquid cooling block receiving cooling liquid from a cooling liquid source, the liquid cooling block being in thermal contact with the heat generating processing components.
[0004] Depending on the availability of water resources, in many cases, the preferred cooling liquid source includes a dry cooling unit. The dry cooling unit supplies cooling liquid to the rack-mounted electronic processing equipment via a pump, and the dry cooling unit receives heated liquid from the electronic processing equipment, and the dry cooling unit is configured to re-cool the received heated liquid to circulate back to the electronic processing equipment.
[0005] Sometimes, certain components critical to the liquid flow of a liquid cooling device (such as, for example, a pump or a dry cooling unit) fail. Failure of such a flow component may have a devastating effect on the many heat-generating processing components served by the liquid cooling device.
[0006] In this regard, there remains interest in attempting to minimize the disruptive effects of a failure of a critical flow component of a single liquid cooling device by sharing the liquid cooling components / resources with other liquid cooling devices.
[0007] The subject matter discussed in the background section should not be considered as prior art simply because it is mentioned in the background section. Similarly, the problems mentioned in the background section or problems associated with the subject matter in the background section should not be considered as having been previously recognized in the prior art. The subject matter in the background section merely represents different approaches. Summary of the invention

[0036] With this basic understanding in mind, the disclosed embodiments are directed to systems and methods configured to minimize the disruptive effects of failure of a critical flow component of a single liquid cooling device by sharing the liquid cooling components / resources with other liquid cooling devices.
[0037] Figure 1 A high-level functional block diagram of a data center liquid cooling system 10 according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present technology is shown, the data center liquid cooling system 10 including two liquid cooling devices 100, 200 with shared support capacity 145, 245, which are used to cool corresponding rack-mounted processing components.
[0038] As shown, the first liquid cooling device 100 of the system 10 includes: a dry cooling unit 110; a plurality of rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N; a plurality of smart valves 122A to 122N, in which each smart valve is fluidically connected to a corresponding processing component; a forward liquid distribution loop 115, which includes at least one pump 112A, 112B, and the forward liquid distribution loop 115 is used to supply cooling liquid from the dry cooling unit 110; a return liquid distribution loop 125, which is used to return the heated liquid to the dry cooling unit 110; an auxiliary liquid supply loop 117, which is used to replenish the cooling liquid flow back to the dry cooling unit 110; and a control module panel 101, which is communicatively connected to various components and sensors.
[0039] Similarly, the second liquid cooling device 200 of the system 10 includes: a dry cooling unit 210; a plurality of rack-mounted processing components 220A to 220N; a plurality of smart valves 222A to 222N, in which each smart valve is fluidically connected to a corresponding processing component; a forward liquid distribution loop 215, which includes at least one pump 212A, 212B, and the forward liquid distribution loop 215 is used to supply cooling liquid from the dry cooling unit 210; a return liquid distribution loop 225, which is used to return the heated liquid to the dry cooling unit 210; an auxiliary liquid supply loop 217, which is used to replenish the cooling liquid flow back to the dry cooling unit 210; and a control module panel 201, which is communicatively connected to various components and sensors.
[0040] Each of the dry cooling units 110, 210 can be located on any suitable stable support surface, such as, for example, the roof of a data center / computer processing facility building. The dry cooling units 110, 210 are used to dissipate thermal energy from heated liquid circulated through the dry cooling units 110, 210 to the surrounding environment. For example, in a data center or similar facility, the dry cooling units 110, 210 operate to receive heated liquid from corresponding rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N and extract thermal energy from the heated liquid by dissipating energy into the surrounding environment via the corresponding at least one fan assembly 110A, 210A, thereby re-cooling the heated liquid. The dry cooling units 110, 210 then operate to supply the re-cooled liquid back to the corresponding rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N.
[0041] As shown, each of the dry cooling units 110, 210 includes at least one heat exchanger 110B, 210B and at least one fan assembly 110A, 210A, respectively. The heat exchangers 110B, 210B may take on a variety of configurations, such as air-liquid heat exchangers, etc., and the heat exchangers 110B, 210B may also include evaporative pads or cooling pads. For purposes of the present disclosure, the exact configurations of the dry cooling units 110, 210 and the heat exchangers 110B, 210B are not limited, as various configurations may be employed without departing from the concept of the present disclosure.
[0042] As further shown, the forward liquid distribution circuit 115, 215 includes at least one pump 112A, 212A. In the depicted embodiment, the forward liquid distribution circuit 115, 215 employs two pumps 112A, 112B and 212A, 212B, respectively, each correspondingly provided pump being arranged in a parallel configuration to maintain the flow rate of the cooling / recooling liquid supplied to the processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N at an appropriate level.
[0043] The forward liquid distribution circuit 115, 215 also includes a corresponding forward "smart" control valve 119A, 219A. For the purpose of this disclosure, the term "smart" valve refers to a valve that is independent of pressure and susceptible to temperature, and the term "smart" valve includes a differential pressure regulator to automatically adjust to system pressure changes and close under certain operating conditions. Such smart valves may include: PICV, ABQM, other functionally similar valves or valve combinations, such as solenoid valves and control valve combinations. In this implementation, the smart control valves 119A, 219A are configured to sense and adjust the flow rate of cooling / recooling liquid supplied to the processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N. As discussed in more detail below, the forward smart control valves 119A, 219A are also connected to the corresponding control module panels 101, 201 in a communicative manner to provide notification of liquid flow failures or component failures (such as, for example, mechanical / electrical failures of pump or fan components).
[0044] The heated liquid from the rack mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N is returned to the dry cooling unit 110, 210 for re-cooling via the corresponding return liquid distribution loop 125, 225. The return liquid distribution loop 125, 225 also includes a return smart control valve 119B, 219B, which is configured to sense and regulate the flow rate of the heated liquid returned to the dry cooling unit 110, 210.
[0045] As depicted, the dry cooling units 110, 210 supply cooled / recooled liquid at a nominal temperature T to the corresponding rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N, and the heated liquid returning to the dry cooling units 110, 210 is at a nominal temperature T+ΔT, where ΔT represents the temperature difference between the cooled / recooled liquid and the heated liquid.
[0046] The liquid cooling apparatus 100, 200 of the system 10 respectively include a plurality of rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N, which receive a supply of cooled / recooled liquid via corresponding forward liquid distribution circuits 115, 215, internally direct the cooled liquid (e.g., water circulated through a water block) to the heat-generating processing components, and transfer the heated liquid from the heat-generating processing components to the return liquid distribution circuits 125, 225.
[0047] The rack-mounted processing components 120A-120N, 220A-220N may be configured with similar heat-generating processing components or may not be configured with similar heat-generating processing components. In this regard, each of the rack-mounted processing components 120A-120N, 220A-220N may have different temperature and flow requirements to operate properly.
[0048] It will be understood that although the rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N are depicted as being arranged in a parallel configuration, this is not meant to be limiting, as the processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N may also be arranged in a series configuration or a combination of parallel and series configurations without departing from the concepts of the present disclosure.
[0049] As shown, each of the rack-mounted processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N is fluidly connected to a smart valve 122A to 122N, 222A to 222N, which dynamically controls the flow of the corresponding processing component 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N based on the detected liquid temperature.
[0050] Along the forward liquid distribution circuit 115, 215, the liquid cooling device 100, 200 further includes a temperature sensor 126, 226, which is used to detect the temperature T of the supplied cooling liquid. C flow pressure sensor 127, 227, the flow pressure sensor 127, 227 for measuring the pressure P of the supplied liquid flow; and volume sensor 128, 228, the volume sensor 128, 228 for the flow rate V of the supplied cooling liquid C Take measurements.
[0051] For the return liquid distribution circuit 125, 225, the liquid cooling device 100, 200 further includes a temperature sensor 125, 225, which is used to detect the temperature T of the return heated liquid. H Take measurements.
[0052] The liquid cooling arrangement 100 , 200 additionally comprises a respective bypass control valve 140 , 240 which is fluidly coupled to an auxiliary liquid feed circuit 117 , 217 for replenishing a return liquid flow back to the dry cooling unit 110 , 210 .
[0053] The system 10 also employs a liquid sharing support loop 160 for sharing / diverting liquid cooling components / resources of the liquid cooling devices 100, 200 in the event of a critical flow component failure of either of the liquid cooling devices 100, 200. Such critical flow component failures may include, for example, a pump 112A, 112B, 212A, 212B failure and / or a dry cooling unit 110, 210 failure.
[0054] In particular, the liquid sharing support circuit 160 implements a first switching control valve or solenoid valve 145, which is fluidly coupled to the forward liquid distribution circuits 115, 215 of both the first cooling device 100 and the second cooling device 200. The fluid connection point of the first switching control valve 145 to each of the forward liquid distribution circuits 115, 215 is arranged close to the downstream of the forward smart control valves 119A, 219A and the upstream of the corresponding processing components 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N.
[0055] Likewise, the liquid sharing support circuit 160 implements a second switching control valve or solenoid valve 245 that is fluidly coupled to the return liquid distribution circuits 125, 225 of both the first cooling device 100 and the second cooling device 200. The fluid coupling point of the second switching control valve 245 to each of the return liquid distribution circuits 125, 225 is disposed proximate to the downstream of the respective processing assembly 120A to 120N, 220A to 220N and upstream of the return smart control valve 119B, 219B.
[0056] As noted above, each of the liquid cooling devices 100, 200 also includes a control module panel 101, 201, respectively, which is communicatively coupled to various components and flow sensors, pressure sensors, and temperature sensors. That is, for various non-limiting embodiments, the control module panels 101, 201 are configured to: receive data from the temperature sensors 126, 226, 130, 230, the pressure sensors 127, 227, the volume sensors 128, 228, and the smart control valves 119A, 219A; process the data; and provide notifications to operators to resolve faults and maintenance issues.
[0057] Figure 3A high-level functional block diagram of a representative control module panel 101 / 201 of a data center liquid cooling system according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present technology is shown. As shown, the control module panel 101 / 201 includes: a processor or multiple co-processors (for simplicity, represented as a processor 310), a memory device or multiple memory devices (for simplicity, represented as a memory device 330), and an input / output interface 320 (or a separate input and output interface) that allows the control module panel 101 / 201 to communicate with certain components of the data center liquid cooling system 10. The processor 310 is operably connected to the memory device 330 and the input / output interface 320. The memory device 330 includes a storage device for storing parameters 334, which parameters 334 include, for example, but not limited to, the predetermined conductivity threshold mentioned above. The memory device 330 may include a non-transitory computer readable medium for storing code instructions 332 executable by the processor 310 to allow the controller 101 / 201 to perform various tasks assigned to the control module panel 101 / 201 .
[0058] In addition, the controller control module panel 101 / 201 is operably connected to components of the data center liquid cooling system 10, such as temperature sensors 126, 226, 130, 230, pressure sensors 127, 227, volume sensors 128, 228, and smart control valves 119A, 219A, via the input / output interface 320. In addition, the controller control module panel 101 / 201 is operably connected to a display device 340, which is configured to provide alarms and notifications to an operator via visual and / or audible means.
[0059] Back to Figure 1 , the control module panels 101, 201 are also communicatively coupled to the forward intelligent control valves 119A, 219A for the corresponding forward liquid distribution circuits 115, 215 of the first cooling device 100 and the second cooling device 200. Therefore, in the event that any type of liquid flow abnormality along one of the corresponding forward liquid distribution circuits 115 / 215 is detected by any of the forward intelligent control valves 119A / 219A, the relevant forward intelligent control valve 119A / 219A will provide information about the abnormality to the corresponding control module panel 101 / 201.
[0060] Therefore, in response to the notification through the associated forward intelligent control valve 119A / 219A and / or the data received from the associated temperature sensors 126, 226, 130, 230, pressure sensors 127, 227 and volume sensors 128, 228 regarding the detected liquid flow abnormality, the corresponding control module panel 101 / 201 issues an alarm message to the operator, indicating that one of the forward intelligent control valves 119A / 219A has detected a cooling liquid flow abnormality, which may be caused by a component failure problem along the corresponding forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215.
[0061] In some embodiments, in response to the detected problem, the operator can then activate the first switching control / solenoid valve 145 to cause the first switching control / solenoid valve 145 to open and route an appropriate portion of the cooling liquid flow from the operational (i.e., non-faulty) forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215 to the processing components 120A to 120N / 220A to 220N of the faulty forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215.
[0062] In other embodiments, in response to a detected problem, the corresponding control module panel 101 / 201 can automatically activate the first switching control / solenoid valve 145 to cause the first switching control / solenoid valve 145 to open and direct an appropriate portion of the cooling liquid flow from the operating (i.e., fault-free) forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215 to the processing components 120A to 120N / 220A to 220N of the faulty forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215.
[0063] Accordingly, the operator can also activate the second switching control valve / solenoid valve 245 to open the second switching control valve / solenoid valve 245 and route an appropriate portion of the heated liquid flow from the processing components 120A to 120N / 220A to 220N of the faulty return liquid distribution circuit 125 / 225 to the operating return liquid distribution circuit 125 / 225 for re-cooling by the dry cooling unit 110 / 210 belonging to the operating return liquid distribution circuit 125 / 225.
[0064] As noted above, because the forward smart control valve 119A / 219A is configured to dynamically adjust to system pressure changes, the smart control valve 119A / 219A is able to provide acceptable cooling liquid flow to the processing components 120A to 120N / 220A to 220N of both the operating forward liquid distribution circuit and the faulty forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215.
[0065] In this way, the presented data center liquid cooling system 10 having the capability of shared support via the liquid sharing support loop 160 and associated switching control / solenoid valves 145, 245 operates to minimize the disruptive effects caused by failure of critical flow components of a single liquid cooling device and to provide routine or planned maintenance by sharing liquid cooling components / resources of other operating liquid cooling devices.
[0066] That being said, Figure 2 A flow chart of a data center liquid cooling resource sharing method 50 in the event of a component failure according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present technology is shown. The method 50 or a portion thereof may be performed by a related component (such as, for example, an intelligent control valve, a switching / solenoid valve) or may also be performed by the control module panels 101 and / or 201 of the corresponding first cooling device 100 and second cooling device 200. For the purposes of this disclosure, one or more specific entities that perform the method 50 do not limit the inventive concepts presented herein.
[0067] As shown, at task block 52, method 50 provides for installing the forward smart control / solenoid valve 119A, 219A to each of the respective forward cooling liquid distribution circuits 115, 215. At task block 54, method 50 provides for installing a first switching / ABQM / solenoid valve 145, which is fluidly coupled to both the forward cooling liquid distribution circuits 115, 215, and at task block 56, method 50 provides for installing a second switching / ABQM / solenoid valve 245, which is fluidly coupled to both the return heated liquid distribution circuits 125, 225.
[0068] At task block 58, the control module 101, 201 detects the data reported by the temperature sensors 126, 226, 130, 230, the pressure sensors 126, 227, the volume sensors 128, 228, and the smart valves 119A, 219A. The method 50 then determines at decision block 60 whether the reported data indicates a detected fluid flow anomaly or fault. If no fluid flow anomaly or fault is detected, the method 50 returns to task block 58 to continue monitoring the data reported by the temperature sensors 126, 226, 130, 230, the pressure sensors 126, 227, the volume sensors 128, 228, and the smart valves 119A, 219A.
[0069] However, if the data reported to the control module 101 , 201 indicates a liquid flow anomaly / fault, then at task block 62 the method 50 identifies which of the first cooling device 100 or the second cooling device 200 is experiencing the liquid flow problem and sends an alarm message via the control module 101 , 201 .
[0070] Based on the alarm message, at task block 64, the method 50 instructs to close the respective forward cooling liquid distribution circuit 115, 215 and return heated liquid distribution circuit 125, 225 of the first cooling device 100 or the second cooling device 200 that is identified as experiencing a liquid flow problem. Closing the identified liquid distribution circuit includes closing the associated valve 119A, 119B or valve 219A, 219B. Closing the associated valve 119A, 119B, 219A, 219B may be performed manually by an operator or automatically based on executable instructions issued directly by the control module 101, 201 to the associated valve 119A, 119B, 219A, 219B.
[0071] In turn, at task block 66, the method 50 instructs to open the first switching valve 145 to route the appropriate portion of the cooling liquid flow from the operational forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215 to the processing components 120A to 120N / 220A to 220N of the identified faulty forward liquid distribution circuit 115 / 215. This allows the cooling liquid flow from the operational forward liquid distribution circuit 115, 215 to be shared to the identified faulty forward liquid circuit.
[0072] Accordingly, at task block 68, the method 50 directs opening the second switching valve 245 to route an appropriate portion of the heated liquid flow from the processing components 120A to 120N / 220A to 220N of the identified faulty return liquid distribution circuit 125 / 225 to the operational return liquid distribution circuit 125 / 225 for recooling by the dry cooling unit 110 / 210. Again, this allows the heated liquid flow from the identified faulty forward liquid circuit to be shared to the operational forward liquid distribution circuit 115, 215.
[0073] In various non-limiting embodiments, the method 50 terminates after the first switching valve 145 and the second switching valve 245 are opened to share resources between the operating cooling device and the identified faulty cooling device 100, 200. However, in certain non-limiting embodiments, the method 50 may continue to task block 70 to start both pumps 112A, 112B or 212A, 212B of the operating cooling device to maximize the cooling liquid flow to the identified faulty cooling device 100, 200.
[0074] Additionally, in certain non-limiting embodiments, the method 50 may further proceed to task block 72 to increase the speed of the fan assembly 110A, 210A of the dry cooling unit 110, 210 belonging to the operating cooling device, thereby further maximizing the cooling liquid flow of the identified faulty cooling device 100, 200.
[0075] In this manner, the presented liquid cooling resource sharing method 50 provides liquid support capabilities to a failed liquid cooling device by sharing liquid cooling components / resources of other operating liquid cooling devices.
[0076] Although the implementation described above has been described and illustrated with reference to specific steps performed in a specific order, it should be understood that these steps can be combined, subdivided, or reordered without departing from the teachings of the present technology. At least some of the steps can be performed in parallel or in series. Therefore, the order and grouping of steps are not limitations of the present technology.
