Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention generally relates to the reuse of organosilicon polymers. More specifically, the method of the present invention relates to the depolymerization of organosilicon polymers to obtain organochlorosilanes. This method advantageously enables the recycling of used or unused organosilicon polymers for the preparation of organochlorosilanes, which can then be used in polymerization reactions. Background Art
[0002] Recycling of industrial products and used silicone products is an issue that is gaining attention. Recycling of silicone can reduce gaseous (CO, CO2) emissions associated with the silicone industry by 75% and reduce silicone waste by 65%.
[0003] The depolymerization of organopolysiloxanes to fluorosilanes is known and has been described. The reaction is favorable from a thermodynamic point of view, since the Si-F bonds are very strong (about 135 kcal / mol) compared to the Si-O bonds of organopolysiloxanes (about 110 kcal / mol). However, these processes have certain disadvantages, in particular the release of volatile products or the cost of the fluorine source.
[0004] On the other hand, Si—Cl bonds are relatively weak (especially 90 kcal / mol), so depolymerization of organopolysiloxanes to organochlorosilanes is disadvantageous.
[0005] The depolymerization of polydimethylsiloxanes to give chlorosilanes is known from Enthaler et al. (J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015). The catalyst used is an iron salt. However, this process requires a large amount of catalyst (7.5% by weight of catalyst relative to the weight of the organopolysiloxane), a corrosive chlorine source of the acid chloride type and high temperatures of about 170-190° C.
[0006] It is therefore of interest to provide an alternative process for the depolymerization of organosilicones to organochlorosilanes. It is particularly interesting to provide a catalytic system which enables this depolymerization to be carried out at lower temperatures, enables the amount of catalyst used to be limited and enables the use of other chloride sources. Summary of the invention
[0007] One object of the present application is therefore to propose a process for depolymerizing organosilicones which is efficient and enables good yields of organochlorosilanes to be obtained.
[0008] Another object of the present application is to provide a catalytic system for implementing this method.
[0009] Yet another object of the present application is to propose a simple and non-hazardous catalytic system compatible with the industrialization of this process.
[0010] Other objects may also appear by reading the following description of the invention.
[0011] These objects are achieved by the present application, which relates to a process for preparing organochlorosilanes CS by reacting at least one organosilicon S with a metal or metalloid chloride CM in the presence of at least one metal salt catalyst SM, the metal or metalloid chloride CM being different from the metal salt SM.
[0012] Silicones, also known as organopolysiloxanes, are polymeric materials containing alternating silicon and oxygen atoms and having various organic groups bonded to the silicon.
[0013] In the context of the present invention, the terms "silicone" or "silicone product" or "silicone polymer" or "organopolysiloxane" are understood to mean polymers comprising a siloxane backbone (Si-O-Si) with alternating silicon and oxygen atoms, with various organic groups bonded to the silicon. These silicone polymers can be liquid or solid, depending on the molecular weight and the degree of crosslinking.
[0014] The silicones S of the invention may be of any type; they may be, for example, linear organopolysiloxanes O, such as oils or gums, or branched organopolysiloxanes O, such as resins.
[0015] The organopolysiloxane O may in particular be an oil or a gum and preferably has a dynamic viscosity of between 50 and 600,000 mPa.s at 25° C. or a consistency expressed in tenths of a millimeter of between 200 and 2000 at 25° C. All viscosities mentioned in this specification correspond to so-called “Newtonian” dynamic viscosity values at 25° C., i.e. dynamic viscosities measured in a manner known per se using a Brookfield viscometer at a sufficiently low shear rate gradient that the viscosity measured is independent of the rate gradient.
[0016] The term "gum" is used for organopolysiloxane compounds having a viscosity typically greater than 600,000 mPa.s, which corresponds to a molecular weight greater than 260,000 g / mol.
[0017] These organopolysiloxanes O may contain one or more functional units, for example:
[0018] -OH;
[0019] -H;
[0020] -alkenyl, in particular containing 2 to 6 carbon atoms, preferably vinyl;

[0023] - a linear or branched alkyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, preferably 1 to 5 carbon atoms, which is substituted by at least one fluorine atom, for example 1 to 10 fluorine atoms, for example (C1-C5)alkyl-CF3, which alkyl group is linear or branched;

[0032] The organopolysiloxane O of the present invention may be partially crosslinked.
[0033] The organopolysiloxane O according to the invention may in particular be a used organopolysiloxane which has been used, for example, as a heat transfer fluid and is to be recycled, and with the process according to the invention it is thus possible to produce organochlorosilanes which can then be used directly in industrial processes. In the case of using used organopolysiloxanes O, the organopolysiloxane may then contain further components, such as additives, pigments, etc. The inventors have therefore shown that the presence of these further components does not interfere with the depolymerization reaction and the formation of the organochlorosilane CS.

[0110] Silicone products have a wide variety of applications. As an example, they can be found in food applications (e.g. moulds), medical applications and in the pharmaceutical sector, for example in bottle nipples, catheters, implants or tubes for medical applications. In technical industrial applications, silicone is often used as a material for seals or membranes. In the automotive sector, it is used for hoses, cable sheathing or insulation and as a cushioning material.
[0111] Silicone elastomers are cross-linked silicone materials that contain fillers, such as silica, to obtain good mechanical properties.
[0112] By varying silicone oil, fillers and additives as well as crosslinking patterns, silicone elastomers exhibit different properties and colors.
[0113] Silicone elastomers can be divided into three major categories known to those skilled in the art. Heat vulcanized elastomers (EVC or in English "high temperature vulcanisation (HTV)" or "heat cured rubber (HCR)") are silicone elastomers obtained from silicone compositions of very high viscosity containing silicone rubber and fillers. They are vulcanized at high temperatures, typically between 140°C and 200°C. Crosslinking is achieved either by free radical crosslinking catalyzed by peroxides or by addition reactions in which platinum compounds are used as catalysts.
[0114] Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is a silicone elastomer obtained from a composition containing silicone oil and filler. Crosslinking occurs by addition reaction at temperatures similar to EVC, but usually much faster, by crosslinking the two components mixed just before the start of crosslinking.
[0115] The third category is silicones obtained by crosslinking at ambient temperature silicone compositions crosslinked by polycondensation or polyaddition reactions with silicone oils and fillers as raw materials. These elastomers are called in French “élastomère silicone vulcanisables à froid” (EVF, “room temperature vulcanization (RTV)” in English). These compositions are available in one-component and two-component systems.
[0116] In the process of the present application, the term "organosilicon S" is also understood to mean a silicone-based material, for example a material comprising at least 0.1% by weight of silicone relative to the total weight of the silicone-based material. The silicone-based material may comprise up to 100% by weight of silicone, preferably up to 99.9% by weight of silicone relative to the total weight of the silicone-based material. These silicone-based materials may also contain additives or fillers, such as colorants, silicon dioxide, calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, celite, quartz, titanium oxide, cerium hydroxide, magnesium oxide, mica, etc.
[0117] In the process of the invention, the metal or metalloid chloride CM comprises in particular metalloid chlorides, transition metal chlorides, alkaline earth metal chlorides, alone or as a mixture.

Preferably, the solvent is selected from dichloromethane, n-hexane, n-heptane, toluene, xylene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene.

[0124] Within the scope of the present invention, the number of moles of Si—O is understood to mean the number of moles of Si—O bonds of the organosilicon S.
[0125] In cases where the chemical formula of the starting silicone S is unknown, in particular in the case of formulated commercial products, the number of moles of Si-O can be estimated. In practice, for formulated products, the skilled person knows that the amount of filler is between 20 and 40% by mass, so by estimating the amount of filler as an average of 30% by mass, 70% by mass of silicone is obtained, which enables the calculation of the number of moles of Si-O bonds from the average molar mass of the repeating units.

[0134] Preferably, the Cl / Si—O molar ratio is from 1 to 3, preferably from 2 to 3, for example from 2 to 2.5, for example 2, wherein the amount of chlorine is the amount of chlorine originating from the metal or metalloid chloride CM and the number of moles of Si—O corresponds to the number of moles of Si—O bonds in the organosilicon S.
