[0033] Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a sink that includes integrated electronic components, such as a sound system and a digital assistant connected to the Internet.

[0034] Sinks can be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, copper, enameled cast iron, ceramic materials, engineered stone, polymers, composites, and the like. The size, shape, and configuration of a sink may vary depending on a variety of factors. One particular type of sink is known as an "apron-front sink." Apron-front sinks (including farmhouse sinks) have an exposed panel or "apron" that extends laterally across the front of the sink. In some cases, the apron may be substantially hollow, which helps save weight and material.

[0035] In some environments where the sink is located, it may also be desirable to utilize certain electronic devices, such as music systems, virtual assistants (such as Amazon products, Google Assistant, etc.) and other useful systems. Typically, such electronic systems are placed on nearby surfaces (e.g., countertops, cabinets, etc.) or mounted in other locations. However, some users may not want the appearance of clutter in the environment, so it would be ideal to find other locations for such devices.

[0036] It would be advantageous to provide an improved system that allows the use of electronic devices such as music systems, virtual assistants, etc. in environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, etc., while maintaining the desired aesthetics of the space.

[0037] One embodiment of the present invention is directed to a sink including a basin and a skirt. The sink includes a speaker coupled to the skirt and at least partially contained within a volume defined by the skirt.

[0038] Another embodiment of the present invention relates to an apron module configured to be coupled to a sink. The apron module includes a control system including a processor and a user interface operably coupled thereto. The apron module is communicatively coupled to a sink device and is configured to operate the sink device. The sink device is coupled to the sink.

[0039] Overall reference Figures 1 to 23 , shows a sink according to various exemplary embodiments that includes one or more electronic components that can allow the sink to provide music, virtual assistant functionality, and other features. In this way, the sink can act as an information or data center for the environment in which the sink is placed, and can provide music and / or other sound or visual indications to the user. For ease of reference, in the present invention, such a sink will be referred to as a "smart sink" to indicate that the sink includes functionality beyond that of a typical sink, which merely acts as a container for water, dishes, etc. within the sink basin.

[0040] According to an exemplary embodiment, the smart sink is configured to output sound. The sink may also be configured to receive and interpret user commands and control wired or network connected devices. In some embodiments, the smart sink includes a display (e.g., a monitor, a touch screen display, etc.). Among other advantages, the smart sink integrates the functions of multiple devices (e.g., stereo, artificial intelligence (AI) auxiliary devices, etc.) in a centralized location within the kitchen space.

[0041] According to an exemplary embodiment, a smart sink includes a basin and a skirt. In some embodiments, the smart sink is a non-front skirt sink (e.g., a sink includes only one or more basins, one or more basins and an edge channel, or another sink arrangement known to a person of ordinary skill in the art). The smart sink also includes a skirt module. The skirt module is connected to the sink and includes one or more electronic components configured to provide enhanced functionality to the sink. In some embodiments, the skirt module is disposed in a volume at least partially defined by the skirt (e.g., a skirt area of the sink, which is adjacent to the front side wall of the sink, between the skirt and a cabinet that at least partially surrounds the sink, etc.). In other embodiments, the skirt module is disposed in other parts of the sink (e.g., below the sink, in a saddle or partition between the basins, or in other locations).

[0042] According to an exemplary embodiment, the skirt module includes one or more components or devices configured to control local devices coupled to the sink in the sink ecosystem (e.g., faucets, garbage disposals, soap dispensers, water filtration devices, etc.).

[0043] According to another exemplary embodiment, the skirt module may include one or more components or devices that are configured to control other components outside the sink ecosystem. For example, the skirt module may be configured to control lighting in the kitchen, lighting in other rooms of the building, speakers in other rooms of the building, and other network-connected devices. Such "smart home" features may be controlled by a virtual assistant, and such a virtual assistant may therefore be included in the skirt module. In addition, it should be noted that the same components in the skirt module can be configured to control local devices connected to the sink and other components outside the sink.

[0044] In some embodiments, the skirt module includes one or more audio components, such as speakers, subwoofers, radios, stereo systems, and the like. The audio component may be at least partially contained within a volume defined by the skirt (e.g., in an open space behind the front surface of the skirt that may be enclosed or accessed from the rear of the skirt or from below the skirt). Among other benefits, utilizing the space within the skirt can help hide the skirt module and improve the overall aesthetics of the smart sink. In some embodiments, the audio component may be configured to project sound through an opening in a wall of the skirt (e.g., a bottom wall, a front side wall, and / or a side wall). According to an exemplary embodiment, the skirt module includes one or more indicators or light sources. The light source may be configured, for example, to illuminate an area below the skirt (e.g., a surface of a cabinet and / or kitchen hardware near a smart sink). In other embodiments, the light source may be configured to illuminate other parts of the sink (e.g., a sink basin, etc.).

[0045] Now refer to Figure 1, a sink 100 is shown according to an exemplary embodiment. The sink 100 can be installed in a variety of environments, such as a kitchen or a bathroom. The sink 100 generally includes one or more basins 102 and a skirt 104. The basin 102 may include a bottom plate 105 and one or more side walls 107 extending upward from the bottom plate 105. The bottom plate 105 and the side walls 107 at least partially define a reservoir 110, which is configured to receive a fluid (e.g., water from a faucet, etc.) therein. An edge may extend from the top of the side wall 107 and define an edge plane 114. The skirt 104 is shown to have a top flange 116 and a front wall 120, the top flange 116 extending outwardly from the top of the front side wall 118, and the front wall 120 extending downward from the top flange 116. As shown, the front wall 120 of the skirt 104 is substantially perpendicular to the edge plane 114. The front wall 120 is spaced apart from the front side wall 118 to form a volume 106 (eg, an at least partially enclosed volume, a cavity, a hollow area, etc.). The skirt 104 generally extends laterally across the front of the sink 100. Figure 1 As shown, the volume 106 is further defined by a top flange 116. In some embodiments, the volume 106 extends outward beyond the front surface of the cabinet in which the sink 100 is disposed. In other embodiments, the volume 106 can be at least partially inserted behind the front surface of the cabinet. In some embodiments, the front wall 120 of the skirt 104 can be curved.

[0046] The sink 100 may have any number of basins 102. For example, the sink 100 may have one, two, or more basins 102. Figure 1 In an embodiment of the present invention, the sink 100 has a single basin. Alternatively, the sink 100 can have a single basin 102 that is divided into two or more reservoirs. The basins 102 or reservoirs can be separated by one or more saddles (e.g., dividers, separators, structures, peaks, ridges, etc.). The saddles (not shown) can have any height. Typically, the top of the saddle remains below the rim plane of the sink 100. The saddles can divide the sink 100 into multiple basins 102 or reservoirs of equal or different sizes.

[0047] Sink 100 may be made from a variety of different materials including, but not limited to, stainless steel, Neooc, copper, enameled cast iron, ceramic materials (eg, glass materials), engineered stone, polymers, composites, and other materials.

[0048] Before discussing the sink in more detail, it should be noted that references to "front," "back," "rear," "up," "down," "right," and "left" in this specification are used only to identify various elements according to their orientation in the drawings, where "right," "left," "front," "back," and "rear" are relative to a user facing the sink, and "lateral" is left-right as viewed by the user. These terms are not meant to limit the elements they describe, as various elements may be oriented differently in various applications.

[0049] It should be further noted that, for the purposes of disclosure, the term "coupled" refers to two members being connected to each other directly or indirectly. Such connection may be fixed or removable in nature, and / or such connection may allow fluid, electricity, electrical signals or other types of signals or communications to flow between the two members. Such connection may be achieved by the two members or the two members and any additional intermediate members being integrally formed as a single entity with each other, or by the two members or the two members and any additional intermediate members being attached to each other. Such connection may be permanent in nature, or may be removable or releasable in nature.

[0050] like Figure 1 As shown, sink 100 includes a skirt module 200. Skirt module 200 is configured to function, in part, as an entertainment and / or information system for a user of sink 100 or other individuals in the vicinity of the sink. Figure 1 As shown, the skirt module 200 is completely contained within the volume 106 of the skirt 104. The skirt module 200 is coupled to the skirt 104, which can advantageously improve the overall aesthetics of the device. In some embodiments, the skirt module 200 can be a preassembled insert that fits through the lower wall or side wall of the skirt, as will be further described. The insert may include a housing or mounting member to which the components of the skirt module 200 are coupled. The housing may be removably coupled (e.g., removably coupled) to the sink 100 within the volume of the skirt 104, or in another position on the sink 100. The housing may form a portion of the lower wall of the skirt 104, and may include a fastener (e.g., a clip, a tab, etc.) that engages at least one of the front sidewall, the front surface, or the sidewall of the skirt 104.

[0051] Reference now Figure 2 , shows a block diagram of a sink and home control system 300 according to an exemplary embodiment. Figure 2 As shown, system 300 includes sink 100 and skirt module 200, which are shown together as smart sink 302. System 300 also includes one or more sink devices 304, one or more smart home devices 306, and a network server 308 (e.g., cloud). Each of devices 304, 306 and network server 308 is communicatively coupled to smart sink 302.

[0052] According to an exemplary embodiment, each sink device 304 is coupled to (eg, mounted to or otherwise connected to) a sink (eg, Figure 1 The sink 100). The sink equipment 304 can form part of a sink ecosystem that is configured to facilitate cleaning operations within the sink. The sink equipment 304 may include a faucet, a garbage disposal, a soap dispenser (e.g., a hand dispenser, an automatic dispenser for washing dishes, etc.), a water filtration system, a self-cleaning sink mechanism (e.g., an ultraviolet light disposed along the upper edge of the basin and directed toward the basin), a dishwashing device (e.g., a manual sprayer, etc.), and / or other sink accessories. The sink equipment 304 may also include "smart" devices near the sink and / or kitchen area, such as a coffee maker, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, a dishwasher, etc. The smart sink 302 may be hardwired to the sink equipment 304 or wirelessly connected to the sink equipment 304 (e.g., via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or another wireless communication protocol).

[0053] According to an exemplary embodiment, the smart sink 302 can be configured to communicate bidirectionally with the sink devices 304. For example, the smart sink 302 can be configured to receive diagnostic data (e.g., the condition of the water filter, the fill status of the soap dispenser, etc.) from one or more sink devices 304 and take actions based on the received data. For example, the smart sink 302 can be configured to receive a control signal from a water filtration system indicating that the water filter needs to be replaced (e.g., a given time has passed since the water filter was last replaced, etc.). In response to the control signal, the smart sink 302 can be configured to generate a notification to alert the user that the water filter needs to be replaced. In some embodiments, the smart sink 302 is configured to receive sensor data from one or more sensors (e.g., a flow sensor, a temperature sensor, etc.).

[0054] like Figure 2 As shown, the system 300 includes one or more smart home devices 306. The smart home devices 306 include home automation devices such as room lighting, wireless speaker systems, environmental control systems (e.g., heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, etc.), garage door systems, security systems, and other "smart" devices. According to an exemplary embodiment, the smart home devices 306 may include AI assistant devices (e.g., Google Home, Amazon Echo, and other smart hubs). Among other benefits, integrating these "smart" devices with the smart sink 302 can centralize control to a single device in the kitchen area and allow the user to perform multitasking (e.g., controlling other components in the kitchen or building) while using the sink 100 (see also Figure 1). As with sink device 304, smart sink 302 may be hardwired to smart home device 306 or wirelessly connected to smart home device 306 (eg, via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or another wireless communication protocol).

[0055] In some embodiments, the smart sink 302 provides the functionality of a traditional "smart" speaker as part of a network audio solution. For example, the smart sink 302 can be configured to communicate bidirectionally with a remote computing device (e.g., a mobile phone, a laptop, a tablet, etc.), and can be configured to send and / or receive audio data from the computing device (e.g., via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or another wireless communication protocol). The smart sink 302 can be configured to control an onboard speaker to produce sound based on the audio data received from the remote computing device. In other embodiments, the smart sink 302 can be configured to receive audio from other "smart" speakers (e.g., One, etc.), and coordinate operations with the other "smart" speakers. For example, the smart sink 302 may form part of a plurality of wireless speaker devices located throughout a building and configured to stream music over a wireless network within the building (e.g., similar to Apple Airplay, etc.).

[0056] The smart sink 302 can provide the functionality of a traditional "smart" hub or AI assistant to any user or person in the area near the sink. The smart sink 302 can include an AI assistant. The user can issue verbal commands to the smart sink 302. For example, the user can ask the smart sink 302 to "say hello" to children or other people in the building (e.g., "Hey Alexa, tell the children it's time to eat"). The functionality of the smart sink 302 can be partially illustrated by any of the following examples:

[0104] Reference Figure 1 as well as Figures 3 to 6 The arrangement of the components described should not be considered limiting. Many alternatives are possible without departing from the inventive concepts described herein. For example, Figures 8 to 9 A smart sink 700 is shown that includes a single-piece skirt module 702 according to an exemplary embodiment. In other words, the skirt module 702 is formed as a single entity that includes a control system, a speaker system, a microphone, and an indicator, all of which are enclosed (e.g., housed) in a single housing 704 (e.g., a shell, an insert, a housing body, etc.), within a closed space defined by the housing 704. Among other benefits, the smart sink 700 is designed to have an appearance similar to a standard sink that does not include a skirt module (e.g., the elements of the skirt module 702 are not visible to a user standing in front of the smart sink 700). There are no speakers, grilles, or interfaces on the front wall 706 of the skirt 708. Instead, a speaker grill 710 is disposed on a lower wall 714 of the skirt 708, so that the speaker grill 710 at least partially defines the lower wall 714. A user interface 716 (e.g., buttons for control commands of the skirt module 702, such as a mute button, a volume control button, a power button, etc.) is also disposed along the lower wall 714. Reference Figure 8 , icons 718 (e.g., identification symbols, etc.) for various controls of the user interface 716 are disposed on the front wall 706, on the front surface of the front wall 706, for identifying the location of the controls. The icons 718 may be printed, laser etched, or otherwise formed on the front surface. In other embodiments, the location of the user interface 716 and / or icons 718 may be different.

[0105] like Fig. 9 As shown, the skirt module 702 is accessible through a lower wall 714 of the skirt 708 and is removable from the skirt 708. The lower wall 714 of the skirt 708 defines an opening 720 (e.g., a slot, etc.) that provides access to the skirt 708. The volume 722 is sized to receive the skirt module 702 therein.

[0106] Fig.10 Shows Figure 8 and Fig. 9 The user interface 716 of the skirt module 702 of the skirt module 702. The user interface 716 includes a plurality of control buttons configured to facilitate user interaction with the skirt module 702, including: a play / pause button 724 configured to pause music playback through the speaker system and / or other controller activity, a volume down button 726 to reduce the volume of sound from the speaker system, a volume up button 728 to increase the volume, and a microphone mute button 730 to disable the microphone of the skirt module 702. The user interface 716 also includes an indicator 732, which includes a light source (e.g., a light emitting diode (LED)) configured to project light 734 vertically downward (e.g., toward the floor and / or cabinet) from the lower wall 714 of the skirt 708 (see also Figure 8 ). In other embodiments, the location of the control button and indicator 732 may be different. In other embodiments, the control button may be replaced with at least one non-contact sensor (e.g., a capacitive sensor) or another proximity-based sensor arranged along the wall of the skirt 708.

[0107] like Fig. 9 As shown, the housing 704 is sized and shaped to fit within the volume 722. The housing 704 is a thin rectangular panel and can define an opening through which sound can be transmitted from the speaker system. Sound is transmitted from the housing 704 through a grille 710 that is coupled to the housing 704 and disposed along a lower wall 714. The housing 704 can be separated from the skirt 708. In some embodiments, the skirt module 702 can be used as a stand-alone device (e.g., a "smart" hub) at a location away from the skirt 708.

[0108] Figures 11 to 13 Shows Figures 8 to 9A side cross-sectional view of the smart sink 700. The skirt 708 is at least partially mounted on a vertical wall of the cabinet that is "sandwiched" or otherwise disposed between the skirt 708 and the front side wall of the smart sink. The skirt module 702 is at least partially disposed within the volume 722 and adjacent to the front wall 706. The skirt module 702 can be coupled to the front wall 706 or another inner surface of the skirt 708. In some embodiments, the housing 704 is bonded to the skirt 708 using an adhesive product. In other embodiments, the housing 704 includes magnets to couple the skirt module 702 to the skirt 708. In still other embodiments, the housing 704 is coupled to the skirt 708 using mechanical fasteners (e.g., bolts, screws, brackets, etc.). Fig.11 As shown, the width 736 of the housing 704 between the front wall 706 and the cabinet is less than the width 738 of the opening 720. The front wall 706 defines a lower lip 740 (e.g., a flange, etc.) extending toward the opening 720, and the lower lip 740 is configured to help retain the housing 704 within the skirt 708 (e.g., prevent the housing 704 from separating from the skirt 708).

[0109] like Figures 11 to 13 As shown, the housing 704 includes a grille 710 that is mechanically connected to the lower end of the housing 704 (e.g., by a press-fit connection) and is substantially flush with the lower wall 714. Fig.13 , the width 742 of the grille 710 is less than the width 738 of the opening 720 in the lower wall 714, so that a gap is formed between the edge 744 of the grille 710 and the cabinet. Among other benefits, the press-fit connection between the grille 710 and the housing 704 eliminates the need for mechanical fasteners (e.g., screws, bolts, etc.) and improves the overall aesthetics of the lower wall 714. In other embodiments, the size, shape and / or arrangement of the grille 710 may be different. For example, Figure 14 to Figure 15 A grille 834 is shown that is mechanically secured (e.g., via screws, bolts, etc.) to the housing 704. The grille 834 is again substantially flush with the lower wall 714 of the skirt 708. The grille 834 includes a frame 836 that is configured to support the grille 834 and prevent the grille 834 from bending or otherwise deforming in the area of the fasteners 838. Fig.14 As shown, the frame 836 is disposed between the grille 834 and the housing 704 along an upper surface of the grille 834. The grille 834 is substantially the same size as the opening 720 and completely occupies the opening 720.

[0110] Figures 16 to 18A grille 934 is shown according to another exemplary embodiment. The grille 934 extends beyond the opening 720 on at least both ends of the opening 720. The front end 942 and lateral ends 944 of the grille 934 are bent or otherwise deformed to eliminate any sharp edges where the grille 934 joins the opening 720. Figure 18 to Figure 19 Another exemplary embodiment of a grille 1034 is shown. Figure 18 to Figure 19 As shown, the grille 1034 is at least partially recessed into the opening 720 and abuts the lower end of the housing 704 (e.g., such that the upper surface of the grille 1034 is substantially coplanar with the lower surface of the housing 704). Figure 18 to Figure 19 The structure of the grille 1034 eliminates the need for a separate frame or support structure to prevent the grille 1034 from deforming when the mechanical fasteners are tightened.

[0111] Fig. 20 and 21 Sinks 400 and 500 are shown including skirt modules 402 and 502, respectively, wherein at least one of a speaker and an indicator is coupled to front walls 420 and 520 of skirt modules 404 and 504. Fig. 20 , a set of speakers 406 are forward facing so that sound is projected from the front wall 420 toward the user of the sink 400.
