Description

Field of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to a cleaning composition having consumer desirable properties, wherein the composition may be isotropic or lamellar. More specifically, the cleaning composition of the present invention is substantially free of sulfate, comprises glutamate, aspartate or both, and optionally, at least one additional anionic surfactant selected from isethionate, taurate and / or glycinate. The total anionic surfactant used in the cleaning composition is from 1 to 9 wt%, whereby the cleaning composition is mild, stable, foams well, and produces a soft and smooth feel after use. Surprisingly, the cleaning composition produces such consumer desirable properties even when formulated with reduced levels of palm kernel oil derived surfactants. Background of the Invention

[0003] Consumers often seek low sulfate or even sulfate-free detergent compositions because, in addition to being gentler on the environment, such compositions are also gentler on the surfaces being cleaned (e.g., textiles, skin, and hair). Unfortunately, when mild detergent compositions are combined with water and shear, they often have difficulty providing the characteristics desired by consumers, such as desired foaming. Consumers like detergent compositions that produce desired foam because when products foam well, they typically wash longer and more. During cold and flu seasons, especially during epidemics and pandemics, longer wash times are encouraged to better disinfect the surfaces that are targeted for cleaning. In addition, ideal foaming lifts dirt and microorganisms, thereby producing a cleaner surface that is easier to clean with less water.

[0004] In addition to having low or even no sulfate, it is also desirable to reduce the amount of surfactant having a hydrophobic portion derived from palm kernel oil. 12 ) and myristic acid (C 14 ) fatty acid composition does yield surfactants (created by esterifying them with hydrophilic head groups) that produce excellent foaming properties. However, reliance on palm kernel oil is considered a major contributor to deforestation, threatening biodiversity and increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

[0005] There is an increasing interest in developing detergent compositions that are mild, have a positive impact on the environment and at the same time are stable and produce consumer desired properties. Accordingly, the present invention relates to a detergent composition that is substantially free of sulfates and has a reduced content of surfactants having a hydrophobic moiety derived from palm kernel oil. The detergent composition of the present invention comprises glutamate, aspartate or both, and optionally at least one additional anionic surfactant selected from isethionate, taurate and / or glycinate. The total anionic surfactant used in the detergent composition is typically 1 to 9 wt % (or 1.8 to 8 wt % or 2 to 7.2 wt % or 3.3 to 7.5 wt %), whereby the detergent composition is surprisingly mild, stable, produces a soft and smooth feel after use, and unexpectedly produces such consumer desired properties even when formulated with reduced levels of surfactants derived from palm kernel oil.

[0129] The following examples are provided to facilitate the understanding of the present invention. They are not intended to limit the scope of the claims. Example

[0130] The following base cleaning compositions were prepared by mixing the ingredients identified in Table 1 at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 25 to 75° C. The target pH was 6.8 to 7.2.

[0131] Table I

[0132]

[0133]

[0134] Embodiment 1

[0135] The surfactant added to the above base composition is determined as a percentage by weight of the base composition.

[0136] Comparative surfactant

[0137] Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate (2.1%); Sodium Methyl Lauroyl Taurate (2.1%); Cocamidopropyl Betaine (6.5%)

[0138] Reduced palm kernel oil surfactants of the present invention

[0139] Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate (1.4%); Sodium Methyl Lauroyl Taurate (1.4%); Sodium Palmitoyl Glutamate (1.4%); Cocamidopropyl Betaine (6.5%)

[0140] The foam volume (in ml) as shown in the data in Table II was measured using a SITA Foam Tester R-2000 measuring device, the temperature was set at 40°C and the device was set to automatic. The compositions prepared according to the present invention produced equivalent amounts of foam when compared to the compositions prepared with the control surfactant.

[0141] The cleaning compositions prepared according to the present invention were stored for 4 months at 25°C. Surprisingly, with reduced levels of palm kernel oil derived surfactants, the cleaning compositions were stable, had no syneresis, and had no color and odor changes as determined by trained panelists. In addition, after washing with the compositions consistent with the present invention, the panelists concluded that the cleaning compositions lathered well, rinsed easily, and produced a soft and smooth feel after use.

[0144]

[0145] Example II

[0146] The CIM (colorimetric index of mildness) of the cleaning composition was determined by the Corneosurfametry ex vivo test method under standard testing conditions using the procedure outlined in the technical publication of Liu et al., "Modified Corneosurfametry as a new accelerated high-throughput ex-vivo methodology for predicting cleanser effects towards human skin", International Journal of Cosmetic Science, Vol. 38, pg. 178-186, 2016.

[0148] Cleaning composition Color Index of Mildness (CIM) water 749 Comparative surfactant 70.6 Reduced Palm Kernel Oil Surfactant 74.2

[0149] The data in Table III surprisingly show that when the reduced palm kernel oil surfactant according to the present invention is used in the base composition, the cleaning composition is significantly milder and similar to the mildness of water.

[0150] Example III

[0151] Table IV

[0152]

[0153]

[0154] *Surfactants: sodium lauroyl isethionate (SLI), sodium methyl lauroyl taurate (SMLT), sodium palmitoyl glutamate (SPG), cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), respectively expressed in weight percentage.

The stability of the composition with sodium palmitoyl glutamate is surprisingly consistent with washing compositions with traditional surfactants derived from palm kernel oil.
