[0005] According to an embodiment of the present invention, an electronic transdermal patch including a substrate storage device is provided. The substrate storage device includes a first compartment for holding a first substrate. The substrate storage device includes a second compartment for holding a second substrate. The first substrate is different from the second substrate. The electronic transdermal patch also includes a sensor. The sensor is configured to detect the amount of the first substrate adjacent to the electronic transdermal patch. The electronic transdermal patch also includes a delivery element. The delivery element is configured to distribute one or both of the first substrate and the second substrate. The electronic transdermal patch also includes a controller. The controller is configured to control the delivery of the first substrate via the delivery element based on the sensor output of the sensor.
[0006] Detect the amount of the first substrate adjacent to the electronic transdermal patch so that the delivery of the first substrate can be optimized more. During the use of the electronic transdermal patch, the best delivery of the first substrate can depend on multiple factors. Especially, the best delivery of the first substrate can depend on the current first substrate level experienced by the user. Can obtain the understanding of this current first substrate level by measuring the amount of the first substrate adjacent to the electronic transdermal patch.
[0007] The sensor can be configured to detect the amount of the first matrix on the skin of the user adjacent to the electronic transdermal patch. The amount of the first matrix on the user's skin can be determined by the amount of the first matrix in the user's sweat. The amount of the first matrix in the user's sweat can indicate the current first matrix level experienced by the user. In other words, by measuring the amount of the first matrix adjacent to the electronic transdermal patch, the detector can measure the current first matrix level experienced by the user.
[0008] In an example, the sensor of the electronic transdermal patch can determine that the first matrix (preferably nicotine) content in the user's sweat is between 10% and 30%, preferably about 20%. Based on the determined first matrix content, the electronic transdermal patch can control the delivery element to deliver a first matrix content of between 40% and 80%, preferably between 50% and 70%, more preferably about 60%. As described in more detail below, the measurement is preferably completed by measuring the electrical impedance of the user's skin by the sensor.
[0009] Therefore, the delivered first matrix content may not exceed the first matrix content already present in the user's body. Overdosage of the first matrix may be avoided.
[0010] In an example, the sensor of the electronic transdermal patch can determine that the first matrix content in the user's sweat is between 30% and 50%, preferably about 40%. Since the first matrix content is higher than the above example, the electronic transdermal patch can control the delivery element to deliver the first matrix content between 10% and 50%, preferably between 20% and 40%, more preferably about 30%. Again, the first matrix content delivered can therefore not exceed the first matrix content already present in the user's body. Overdose of the first matrix can be avoided.
[0011] The electronic transdermal patch can control the delivery of the second matrix (preferably flavor / fragrance) to a second matrix content of between 10% and 40%, preferably between 20% and 30%.
[0012] In one example, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix in a certain time period. The electronic transdermal patch can deliver the first dose, such as between 2% and 8%, preferably 5% of the first matrix content and 0% of the second matrix content, between 15 minutes and 45 minutes, preferably 30 minutes from activating the electronic transdermal patch.
[0013] Thereafter, the electronic transdermal patch can deliver a second dose, for example between 10% and 30%, preferably 20% of the first matrix content, and between 5% and 15%, preferably 10% of the second matrix content, during between 45 minutes and 75 minutes, preferably 60 minutes from activation of the electronic transdermal patch.
[0014] Thereafter, the electronic transdermal patch can deliver a second dose, for example between 30% and 50%, preferably 40% of the first matrix content, and between 10% and 30%, preferably 20% of the second matrix content, during between 75 minutes and 105 minutes, preferably 90 minutes, from activation of the electronic transdermal patch.
[0015] In a similar manner, the electronic transdermal patch may be configured to deliver a fourth dose, a fifth dose, a sixth dose, etc. based on user preferences.
[0016] Electronic transdermal patch can also be configured to deliver one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix at a predetermined time slot. In an example, the predetermined time slot can correspond to 5-10 minutes after each interval of a predefined time frame, such as between certain intervals based on minutes, between certain intervals based on hours, between certain intervals based on days, between certain intervals based on weeks, or even between certain intervals based on months. Therefore, due to the discrete dosage from the electronic transdermal patch, the user can be relieved from stimulating habits. It is understandable that the predetermined time slot (that is, 5-10 minutes) is only provided as an example; and the user or manufacturer of the electronic transdermal patch can modify the predetermined time slot based on user requirements.
[0017] The delivery of the second matrix can be airborne. The second matrix can be delivered to the mouth and / or nose of the user.
[0018] The delivery of the second matrix may be configured to mimic the sensation of consumption of an aerosol-generating article (eg, a heat-not-burn article) for a user.
[0019] The controller can then use the sensor output to optimally control delivery of the first matrix via the delivery element.
[0020] Controller can comprise lookup table, and described lookup table comprises the best first substrate level of user experience. If sensor output indicates that the current first substrate level of user experience is lower than the best first substrate level stored in the lookup table, then controller can increase the amount of the first substrate delivered via delivery element.Equally, if sensor output indicates that the current first substrate level of user experience is higher than the best first substrate level stored in the lookup table, then controller can reduce the amount of the first substrate delivered via delivery element.Electronic transdermal patch can be configured so that user can add desired distribution map.Desired distribution map can be added to controller.Desired distribution map can comprise lookup table, and this lookup table comprises desired best first substrate level.Desired distribution map can be added using communication interface, as described below.
[0021] As an alternative to storing the best first substrate level in the lookup table, the electronic transdermal patch may include a communication interface that enables the user to input the first substrate level of expectation to the controller. The communication interface may include one or both of a Wi-Fi communication element and a Bluetooth communication element. The user can input the first substrate level of expectation to the controller via the communication interface. The user can input corresponding information by an external device such as a smart phone, smart watch, tablet computer or a cloud server. The external device may include an application program that enables the user to input corresponding information.
[0022] The first matrix may comprise nicotine. The first matrix may be nicotine.
[0023] The second matrix may comprise a flavoring agent. The second matrix may be a flavoring agent. The second matrix may comprise caffeine or may be caffeine.
[0024] Using nicotine as the first matrix can interact synergistically with using caffeine as the second matrix. Typically, users may crave caffeine after experiencing nicotine, and vice versa. Caffeine can be delivered immediately after or simultaneously with the delivery of nicotine. Alternatively, the delivery of caffeine can begin before the delivery of nicotine. In other words, depending on the user's desired delivery profile, the delivery of nicotine can overlap with the delivery of caffeine.
[0025] Exemplarily, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver the first matrix or the second matrix for 1 minute to 3 minutes, preferably 2 minutes. Subsequently, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver the other of the first matrix or the second matrix for 4 minutes to 8 minutes, preferably 5 minutes to 7 minutes, more preferably 6 minutes. Particularly preferably, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver caffeine for about 2 minutes, and subsequently deliver nicotine for about 6 minutes.
[0026] The electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix of the reduction amount over time. In other words, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix of the reduction concentration over time. In the above example, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver caffeine for about 2 minutes, wherein the caffeine concentration is reduced during the 2 minute delivery period. Subsequently, the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to deliver nicotine for about 6 minutes, wherein the nicotine concentration is reduced during the 6 minute delivery period.
[0027] In yet another embodiment, the first matrix may include melatonin. In this embodiment, the second matrix may include an aromatherapy fragrance such as lavender. The synergistic effect between melatonin as the first matrix and lavender as the second matrix may be to help users with sleep disorders or generally improve the user's sleep. The delivery of melatonin can increase sleep time, change sleep stages, reduce sleep latency, and improve sleep efficiency (the ratio of sleep time to bed time). The delivery of lavender as the second matrix can increase the melatonin level in the user's blood. In order to improve the user's sleep, the delivery of melatonin can be synergistically combined with the delivery of lavender.
[0028] In yet another embodiment, the psychoactive properties of cooking spices can be used as one or both of the first and second substrates. Such cooking spices can be dried fruits and seeds such as nutmeg, vanilla, fennel and black pepper, dry flower buds such as cloves, aril such as nutmeg seed coat, bark such as cinnamon and Ceylon cinnamon / Chinese cinnamon, roots and rhizomes such as asarone, ginger, turmeric, galangal and asafoetida and stigma such as saffron. One or both of the first and second substrates can include the active ingredients of these spices, such as myristicin, elemenine, safrole, vanillin, piperonal, anethole, piperine, eugenol, coumarin, calamus, gingerol, shogaol, curcumin, 1,8-cineole, β-pinene, resin, gum, essential oil, propenyl-isobutyl sulfide, umbelliferone, crocin and crocinal. The delivery of such a substrate can have a desired effect, such as acting as a stimulant, a sedative or a hallucinogen. Because these substances can be abused, the controller can be configured to limit the amount of these substances delivered to safe levels.
[0029] The first compartment may be fluidly separated from the second compartment.A fluid-impermeable partition wall may be arranged between the first compartment and the second compartment.
[0030] This can prevent the first matrix from mixing with the second matrix. This can enable the first matrix to be delivered independently of the delivery of the second matrix.
[0031] In the case where the electronic transdermal patch is used to deliver a specific drug having more than two chemical compounds, the matrix storage device may be configured to store each chemical compound individually in each compartment.
[0032] The delivery element may include a first delivery unit configured to dispense a first matrix. The delivery element may include a second delivery unit configured to dispense a second matrix. The first delivery unit may be different from the second delivery unit.
[0033] This can enable the controller to separately control the delivery of the first matrix via the first delivery unit and the delivery of the second matrix via the second delivery unit. Exemplarily, the first delivery unit can be configured to deliver nicotine, followed by caffeine delivery by the second delivery unit. The synergistic effect between the delivery of the first matrix and the delivery of the second matrix can be enhanced by providing two separate delivery units, which can be individually controlled by the controller so that the desired delivery profile of the two matrices can be achieved.
[0034] One or both of the first delivery unit and the second delivery unit may be configured as a micropump.
[0035] One or both of the first delivery unit and the second delivery unit may be configured as a mechanical micropump, such as a diaphragm micropump, a piezoelectric micropump, and a peristaltic micropump.
[0036] Alternatively, one or both of the first delivery unit and the second delivery unit may be configured as a non-mechanical micropump, such as a valveless micropump, a capillary micropump, a chemically powered micropump, and a photo-powered micropump.
[0037] One or both of the first delivery unit and the second delivery unit may be actuated via one or more of piezoelectric means, electrostatic means, thermopneumatic means, pneumatic means, magnetic means, electro-osmotic means, and electro-hydrodynamic means. Alternatively, one or both of the first delivery unit and the second delivery unit may be actuated via one or more of electrical means, hydraulic means, and mechanical means.
[0038] One or both of the first delivery unit and the second delivery unit may include a nozzle, such as a nebulizer or a heated aerosolizer, for delivering one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix.
[0039] The electronic transdermal patch according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein delivery of the second matrix via the delivery element is controlled by the controller based on delivery of the first matrix.
[0040] This may be particularly beneficial for delivering the second matrix in coordination with the delivery of the first matrix. As described herein, illustratively, the second matrix may be caffeine, and the first matrix may be nicotine. After experiencing nicotine, the user may desire caffeine delivery. Therefore, the controller can control the delivery of the second matrix so that the second matrix is delivered immediately after the first matrix is delivered. Another option is to deliver the second matrix so that an overlap is generated between the delivery of the second matrix and the first matrix. In other words, after a predetermined time or a predetermined delivery amount of the first matrix, the controller can start the delivery of the second matrix. The end of the delivery of the first matrix can be after the delivery of the second matrix begins. Another option is to wait for the scheduled time to deliver the second matrix after the delivery of the first matrix ends. If the user wishes to deliver the second matrix after the delivery of the first matrix, this may be beneficial. As described herein, the controller may include a lookup table to determine the optimal delivery profile of the second matrix according to the delivery of the first matrix. Alternatively, the user can input the desired delivery profile of the second matrix into the controller according to the delivery of the first matrix. This input can be a wireless input, such as a Wi-Fi connection or a Bluetooth connection of an external device such as a smart phone, a smart watch or a tablet computer by the controller.
[0041] The first matrix can be controlled by the controller based on the sensor output of the sensor via the delivery period of the delivery element. Alternatively or in addition, the first matrix can be controlled by the controller based on the sensor output of the sensor via the delivery rate of the delivery element. Therefore, the overall delivery of the first matrix to the user can be optimized.
[0042] Alternatively or additionally, the amount of first matrix delivered via the delivery element may be controlled by the controller based on the sensor output of the sensor.A benefit may be that due to the dependency of delivery on the sensor output of the sensor, an optimal amount of first matrix may be delivered to the user.
[0043] The delivery element can be configured to deliver the second matrix by air delivery. The delivery element can be configured as a nozzle. The delivery element can be configured as a spray nozzle. If the delivery element includes a first delivery unit and a second delivery unit as described herein, each delivery unit can include or can be configured as a nozzle or a spray nozzle.
[0044] The sensor can be configured to detect the electrical impedance of the user's skin adjacent to the electronic transdermal patch. The electrical impedance of the user's skin can indicate the amount of the first matrix. The electrical impedance of the user's skin can indicate the amount of the first matrix in the user's sweat. The electrical impedance of the user's skin can indicate the amount of the first matrix in the user's bloodstream.
[0045] For example, the sensor may include a plurality of microfluidic tubes with a sensing element. The sensing element may be configured to measure the concentration of the first substrate content (e.g., nicotine content, potassium content, sodium content, metabolites, or a class of molecules communicating with an enzyme) in the user's sweat. In an example, the sensor may be arranged in an electronic transdermal patch close to and exposed to the position of the user's skin. The sensor may also include a plurality of electrodes, which may be configured to measure the concentration of substrate content in the user's sweat. Examples of sensors may include enzyme-modified field effect transistor (FET) sensors, molecular imprinted polymer (MIP) sensors, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors, wearable sweat sensors on the skin, near-skin wearable sweat sensors, or other bioelectric sensors. Based on the detected substrate, the sensor may also be configured to transmit the detected substrate content to a controller for controlling the delivery of the first substrate.
[0046] One or both in the first compartment and the second compartment can be replaceable, or the substrate storage device can be replaceable. In other words, one or more in the first compartment, the second compartment and the substrate storage device can be configured as a tube. When corresponding substrate is exhausted, the tube can be replaced.
[0047] The electronic transdermal patch may also include a communication interface that enables a user to control the delivery of one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix via the controller.
[0048] The communication interface may enable control of at least one of: an amount of the first matrix delivered, an amount of the second matrix delivered, a duration of delivery of the first matrix, and a duration of delivery of the second matrix.
[0049] The controller can be configured to transmit information to an external device, such as a smart phone, a smart watch, a tablet computer, or a cloud server. The transmitted information can include at least one of the following: a count of the dose used, a count of the available dose, a count of the first matrix dose used / available, a count of the second matrix dose used / available, a count of the flavor / spice used, a count of the available flavor / spice, a type of dose (such as nicotine or caffeine), a type of flavor / spice (such as lemon flavor or mint flavor), an overdose alarm, an underdose alarm, an adhesive level of the adhesive strip for attaching the electronic transdermal patch to the user's skin (such as a low level of adhesion can indicate that the electronic transdermal patch is about to fall off due to minimal adhesion, and a high level of adhesion can indicate that the electronic transdermal patch is firmly connected to the user's skin), a dose timer menu, a dose selection menu, a flavor / spice timer menu, a flavor / spice selection menu, etc. Based on the information transmitted to the graphical user interface (such as a display or a touch-sensitive display) of the external device, the delivery distribution diagram of the delivery element can be controlled by the user input from the graphical user interface of the external device. Based on the received user input, the controller may be configured to control at least one or both of the delivery profile or the first matrix.
[0050] The electronic transdermal patch can also include an actuator that enables a user to control the delivery of one or both of the first matrix and the second matrix via a controller. The actuator can be configured as a button. The actuator can be configured as a mechanical or electromechanical appliance, such as a knob, a slider, a lever, etc.
[0051] The controller of the electronic transdermal patch can be configured to automatically control the delivery of the first matrix based on the sensor output. In particular, the controller can be configured to automatically control the delivery of nicotine based on the detected nicotine content in the user's sweat.
[0052] The controller of the electronic transdermal patch may be configured to automatically end delivery of the first matrix based on the sensor output or based on the amount of the first matrix delivered or based on an elapsed first matrix delivery time.
[0053] This can save energy of the electronic transdermal patch. In addition, this can ensure that the amount of the first matrix delivered does not exceed a predetermined threshold.
[0054] The electronic transdermal patch may further include an adhesive layer. The adhesive layer may be configured to attach the electronic transdermal patch to the user's skin.
[0055] Electronic transdermal patches can be in the form of pads or pouches.
[0056] One or more of the matrix storage device, the first compartment, the second compartment, the sensor and the controller may be hermetically sealed. The hermetic seal may be provided by the housing of the electronic transdermal patch.
[0057] The control of the delivery of one or both of the first and second matrices by the controller may include the control of the delivery total amount of the corresponding matrix. The control of the delivery of one or both of the first and second matrices by the controller may include the control of the delivery amount of the corresponding matrix over time. The control of the delivery of one or both of the first and second matrices by the controller may include the control of the delivery time period of the corresponding matrix.
[0058] The present invention also relates to a method for delivering a matrix using an electronic transdermal patch as described herein, wherein the method may include one or more of the following steps:
[0059] detecting the amount of the first matrix via the sensor, and
[0060] Delivery of the first matrix via the delivery element is controlled via the controller based on the sensor output of the sensor.
[0061] The method may include the step of delivering a second matrix.
[0062] The method may include the step of delivering a second matrix dependent upon the delivery of the first matrix.
[0063] The components of the electronic transdermal patch can be arranged in a mask or other wearable device, such as a wristband or leg band, rather than in the electronic transdermal patch. In other words, the present invention also relates to a mask or other wearable device, such as a wristband or leg band, which includes the components of the electronic transdermal patch described herein. The key concept is applicable to these other applications, to measure the amount of the first matrix by a sensor and control the delivery of the first matrix based on the sensor output.
[0064] Features described with respect to one embodiment may be equally applicable to other embodiments of the invention. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0072] Figure 1 An electronic transdermal patch 10 is shown. The electronic transdermal patch 10 includes a housing 12 or casing. Within the housing 12, the components of the transdermal patch are enclosed. The electronic transdermal patch 10 may be attached to a user's skin 14. The electronic transdermal patch 10 may be attached to a user's skin 14 with an adhesive.
[0073] The housing 12 encloses a substrate storage device 16, a sensor 18, and a controller 20. The substrate storage device 16 includes a first compartment (not shown) and a second compartment (not shown). The first compartment is fluidly separated from the second compartment. A first substrate 22 is arranged in the first compartment and a second substrate 24 is arranged in the second compartment. The first substrate 22 is different from the second substrate 24. Preferably, the first substrate 22 is nicotine, and the second substrate 24 is caffeine.
[0074] Figure 2 A block diagram with more components of the electronic transdermal patch 10 is shown. In addition to the matrix storage device 16, the sensor 18 and the controller 20, a delivery element including a first delivery unit 26 and a second delivery unit 28 is also depicted. The first delivery unit 26 is configured to deliver the first matrix 22, and the second delivery unit 28 is configured to deliver the second matrix 24. The first delivery unit 26 can be configured as a nozzle or an atomizer or a delivery device of any kind. The second delivery unit 28 can be similarly constructed. The first delivery unit 26 is separated from the second delivery unit 28. Therefore, the first matrix 22 can be delivered independently of the second matrix 24. The delivery of the first matrix 22 and the delivery of the second matrix 24 are controlled by the controller 20. The controller 20 can control the delivery of the first matrix 22 independently of the delivery of the second matrix 24.
[0075] Figure 3 The delivery profile of the first matrix 22 and the second matrix 24 is shown. The X-axis shows time in minutes and the Y-axis shows the amount of matrix delivered. Figure 3 In the example of, the first matrix 22 is delivered first. Starting from the 1st minute, the first matrix 22 is delivered for two minutes. During the delivery time of the first matrix 22, the amount of the first matrix 22 delivered over time decreases. After the 3rd minute, the delivery of the first matrix 22 is stopped. Immediately after the delivery of the first matrix 22 is stopped, the second matrix 24 is delivered. The second matrix 24 is delivered during a period of about six minutes. During this period, the amount of the second matrix 24 delivered decreases over time.
[0076] Figure 4 An example of the functionality of the sensor 18 of the electronic transdermal patch 10 is shown. In more detail, the first matrix content 30, meaning the amount of the first matrix 22 delivered during a predetermined time period, depends on the measurement value of the sensor 18. The sensor 18 is arranged to measure the electrical impedance of the user's skin 14. The electrical impedance of the user's skin 14 indicates the amount of the first matrix 22 contained in the user's sweat, which in turn indicates the amount of the first matrix 22 in the user's bloodstream. In other words, the sensor 18 is configured to measure the concentration of the first matrix 22 that the user is currently experiencing. Based on the first matrix measurement value 34 of the sensor 18, the controller 20 is configured to control the delivery of the first matrix content 30. In Figure 4 In the example shown in FIG. 1 , the sensor 18 detects a nicotine content of 20% (first matrix measurement 34 ). Therefore, a relatively high nicotine content of 60% (first matrix content 30 ) is delivered. In addition, Figure 4 The delivery of the second matrix 24 in the form of a second matrix content 32 of 20% caffeine is shown.
[0077] Figure 5 Shown with Figure 4 The example is similar to the example shown in , except that the sensor 18 detects a 40% higher nicotine content (first matrix measurement 34). Therefore, a 30% lower nicotine content (first matrix content 30) is delivered. Figure 5 It is also shown that the second matrix content 32 can vary. Figure 5 In the example shown in , the second matrix content 32 delivers 30% caffeine.
[0078] Figure 6An exemplary delivery profile of nicotine and caffeine over time is shown. The X-axis shows time in minutes again and the Y-axis shows the amount of the substrate delivered. After 30 minutes of time after activating the electronic transdermal patch 10, the first dose of 5% nicotine (the first substrate content 30) is delivered, while the second substrate 24 is not delivered at this stage. After 60 minutes of time after activating the electronic transdermal patch 10, the second dose of 20% nicotine is delivered together with the first dose of 10% caffeine. After 90 minutes of time after activating the electronic transdermal patch 10, the third dose of 40% nicotine is delivered together with the second dose of 20% caffeine. After 120 minutes of time after activating the electronic transdermal patch 10, the fourth dose of 60% nicotine is delivered together with the third dose of 40% caffeine. After 150 minutes of time after activating the electronic transdermal patch 10, the user may want to experience a higher content of caffeine, and the fifth dose of 70% nicotine is delivered together with the fourth dose of 100% caffeine. Finally, after a period of 180 minutes after activation of the electronic transdermal patch 10, the sixth dose of 100% nicotine was delivered, while at this stage, the second matrix 24 was not delivered.
