[0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 354,514, filed on June 22, 2022, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background Art
[0003] Hair and scalp cleansing is a common grooming habit that is considered important for optimal cleanliness, health and maintenance of hair. Hair cleansers generally remove sebum, sweat, shed stratum corneum and environmental soils, which helps prevent the development of conditions such as folliculitis and seborrheic dermatitis. Current commercial formulations employ synthetic detergents, technically described as surfactant systems that are mixed in varying amounts and ratios to achieve the desired amount of cleansing power. The beauty industry offers consumers a myriad of options to assist in general hair cleansing, covering formulations with a wide variety of ingredients and compositions.
[0004] In addition to removing sebum, sweat, detached stratum corneum and environmental dirt, the secondary function of shampoo is to impart the required sensory effect to hair. Thoroughly cleaned hair (that is, without any sebum or product at all) often feels lacking in smoothness and looks duller, and as a result is usually not considered to be cosmetically desirable. A strategy to address this problem is to incorporate a large amount of conditioners into the cleaning material. These conditioners are deposited on the hair surface, and usually only change the surface properties of the hair, that is, improve the outward appearance and feel of the hair, but do not address any potential damage to the hair structure. The excessive deposition of these conditioners, particularly when combined with insufficient cleaning, can cause conditioners to accumulate in the hair and make the hair droop or make it look duller. Therefore, a new hair cleaning material composition is needed, which not only cleans the hair but also provides required hair properties, without excessive deposition of conditioners. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0021] The fiber structure of human hair is composed of stratum corneum, cortex and medulla. The stratum corneum is composed of a thin layer of overlapping cells, like a scale system, and provides protection for the inner core (i.e., cortex) of hair. Due to the presence of a large number of isopeptides and disulfide bonds in each lamella of keratinocytes, keratinocytes are mechanically very stable and can resist many environmental factors, including the penetration of foreign molecules. The stratum corneum accounts for about 15% of the weight of a hair. The cortex is the middle region of the hair and accounts for about 80% of the weight of a hair. The cortex is composed of a hierarchical structure of elongated fibrous α-helical keratin, which extends along the fiber axis embedded in the amorphous protein matrix. It is the system of the cortex and its intertwined protein fibers and supporting matrix that gives hair tensile properties (strength, elasticity). The cell membrane complex connects keratinocytes with other keratinocytes, cortical cells with other cortical cells, and keratinocytes with cortical cells. The medulla corresponds to the central cell bundle and does not exist in some hair fibers.
[0022] Human hair contains about 65% to 95% protein. Proteins exhibit their active properties within a specific temperature and pH range and can unfold outside these limits. When treated with low pH solutions, thermal denaturation of fibrous hard α-keratin proteins (i.e., cortical proteins responsible for hair strength and elasticity) shows significantly improved stability. This is especially true for those keratins that have been subjected to oxidative damage (such as by bleaching), and this has been demonstrated by the significant increase in the enthalpy and peak temperature of thermal denaturation as quantified by DSC. Enthalpy is generally understood to reflect the amount and structural integrity of α-helical material in the hair intermediate filament (IF), while peak temperature reflects the cross-linking density of the matrix embedded with IF. Amino acid analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and tensile strength observations further support this phenomenon.
[0023] Alkaline pH creates a more favorable environment for cystine (disulfide) disruption, hydrolysis of amide bonds, and formation of lanthionine and lysalanine, all of which weaken the protein structure of hair. The duration of hair exposure to solutions of a particular pH does not significantly change thermal stability; combined with the fact that tap water pH varies widely from neutral to alkaline, this suggests that negative effects may be experienced for the duration of exposure that hair could reasonably be expected to experience under normal washing conditions.
[0024] The observed differences in thermal stability of hair proteins exposed to different pH are due to changes in the environment of the intermediate filaments, i.e., the interface between the IF and the surrounding matrix proteins. This scaffold structure at the surface of the IF is formed by side chain interactions that anchor the filament to the matrix. Strong adsorption of protons at the interface of the IF may help to shield this interface; disulfide bonds as well as electrostatic forces further stabilize this region.
[0025] During the cleansing process, hair is in a structurally fragile state, as water molecules disrupt the hydrogen bonds that stabilize the protein structure. This causes swelling of certain parts of the cuticle and makes the hair fiber susceptible to damage. Furthermore, it has been determined that the swelling behavior of the hair cuticle is highly dependent on pH: the more alkaline the environment, the greater the swelling. In addition to the effect on thermal stability, this modification of cuticle swelling by pH also has an impact on the properties and damage propensity of hair, which is directly relevant to the consumer. When the cuticle swells, the interfiber friction of the hair fiber increases, resulting in increased hair tangling and a rough, uncomfortable feel. Hair is also in a more fragile state when wet; the need for greater combing forces combined with the lower breaking stress of hair in the wet state can easily lead to cuticle flaking, protein loss, and even severe breakage during hair washing and shampooing. The minimal cuticle swelling exhibited at acidic pH can help to counteract this effect.
[0026] The proteins in hair are at their best (most structurally resilient) at a pH of around 5. This more acidic pH environment can also minimize excessive swelling of the stratum corneum, thereby reducing protein loss, preserving color, and minimizing electrostatic repulsion. This is also the ideal pH range for skin with an acidic mantle. Skin with a disturbed pH can experience barrier disturbances, inflammation, and irritation. The pH of tap water varies widely, from 6.5 to 9.53, and can contain metal ions such as divalent calcium and magnesium (hard water minerals) that can affect the texture of the hair, as well as trace levels of transition metals such as copper, iron, nickel, lead, etc. that can cause oxidative degradation of the hair fiber.
[0027] Additionally, peptides can be used to treat hair that has been damaged during the cleansing process. These peptides can interact with the hair primarily via covalent (disulfide) bonds, polar bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. However, penetration of peptides into the cortex of the hair strand, which is necessary for successful treatment, can be difficult. Molecular size and polarity play an important role in determining the ability of a molecule to enter the interior of the fiber structure. Additionally, the presence of sebum and products on the hair strands can hinder the ability of the peptides to successfully migrate to the cortex. While a properly acidic pH helps stabilize the protein structure of the hair (as detailed above), these peptides can work in a complementary and synergistic manner to add additional strengthening effects. Overall, the system can both protect and repair the hair protein structure, which can be fragile during the cleansing process.
[0028] Therefore, the present invention provides a hair cleaning composition with optimized pH that reduces swelling and protein loss. Shampoos formulated with more acidic pH can help resist this alkaline pH environment and minimize the net negative charge on the hair protein, which minimizes cuticle swelling and reduces the binding sites of dissolved metal cations. Although protective agents such as softeners, sealants, cations and polymers are used on hair fibers to minimize friction and related styling damage and provide a barrier to heat, UV and pollution, excessive product accumulation can cause hair to sag and prevent other products from performing. Hair compositions can include peptides that strengthen the protein structure in the hair cortex to restore the tensile strength of the hair fiber. These peptides can be incompatible with traditional conditioners that form films or coatings and can prevent peptides from interacting with hair proteins, most especially preventing peptides from entering the cortex.
[0029] In some embodiments, hair cleaning composition as herein described comprises low molecular weight peptides that can penetrate into the cortex of hair and improve the mechanical properties of hair.In some embodiments, hair cleaning composition as herein described provides the texture of lasting improvement and the manageability of improvement for hair when being dry. After long-term use, hair cleaning composition as herein described provides soft, glossy, undamaged texture and other desired features for hair.Hair cleaning composition as herein described can not strip any essential oil on hair, alleviates protein loss and repairs potential hair damage, thereby avoids excessive reliance on the conditioner covering hair fiber to realize desired characteristics. In addition, because its composition is limited, therefore hair cleaning composition as herein described can not cause the accumulation of excessive conditioner or other products that can finally make hair droop.

[0063] Cleaning Agents
[0064] The hair cleaning compositions described herein include one or more cleaning agents that help clean the hair but do not remove or replace any essential oils. In some embodiments, the hair cleaning compositions comprise one or more cleaning agents selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, nonionic surfactants, biosurfactants, and any combination thereof.
[0065] In order to be cosmetically acceptable, surfactants must provide good foaming properties and stable rheology in addition to being effective cleansers. Anionic surfactants tend to perform best in these categories; however, consumer perception of the most effective traditionally used categories (i.e., sulfates) makes acceptance of these anionic surfactants challenging. While this limits the selection of suitable surfactants, it must also be noted that another limiting factor is ionic tolerance, as previously mentioned, many surfactants tend to be neutral or alkaline, but acidic compositions require performance and stability in low pH and potentially hard water. Sulfonates (particularly alkyl sulfonates or olefin sulfonates) exemplify a class of sulfonates that meet the specified criteria. These surfactants exhibit particularly good synergy with alpha hydroxy acids or salicylic acid.
[0066] However, single surfactant systems often lack one aspect or the other, so blends are preferred. Amphoteric surfactants impart mildness and improve sensory characteristics. Hydroxysulfobetaines have very low irritation properties and improve the mildness of surfactant formulations while increasing foam and stability, thereby allowing a reduction in the total surfactant level, which is another key criterion for formulations designed to treat the scalp skin barrier with caution. They also exhibit particularly wide pH and electrolyte tolerance, making them excellent cleansers in hard water and in combination with acidic ingredients. Amino acid-derived surfactants can act as a cleanser while moisturizing the skin or conditioning hair, and are another typical choice. When properly formulated, these surfactants can be used on hair or skin every day. Finally, biosurfactants represent another type of high-performance cleaning molecule with the additional advantage of superior environmental compatibility, including more sustainable source materials, improved biodegradability, or more environmentally friendly manufacturing.
[0067] In some embodiments, the one or more cleaning agents are anionic surfactants selected from the group consisting of sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, disodium 2-sulfolaurate, alkylbenzene sulfonates, ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium xylene sulfonate, sodium lauryl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, sodium 2-sulfolaurate, sodium myristyl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate, sodium xylene sulfonate, C14-16 Sodium olefin sulfonate, C 14-16 Sodium alpha olefin sulfonate, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate, sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauryl isethionate, sodium cocoyl sarcosinate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, sodium myristoyl sarcosinate, lauroyl sarcosine, cocoyl sarcosine, myristoyl sarcosine, oleoyl sarcosine, myristoyl / stearoyl sarcosine, sodium lauroyl glutamate, sodium cocoyl glutamate, disodium cocoyl glutamate, cocoyl glutamate , lauroyl glutamate, potassium cocoyl glutamate, potassium lauroyl glutamate, potassium myristoyl glutamate, sodium myristoyl glutamate, sodium stearoyl glutamate, disodium stearoyl glutamate, sodium palmitoyl glutamate, sodium lauroyl lactylate, sodium muru palmitoleate, sodium lauryl glucoside hydroxypropyl sulfonate, disodium lauryl glucoside hydroxypropyl citrate, sodium hydroxypropyl sulfonate lauryl glucoside crosspolymer, dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, and any combination thereof.

[0146] Example
[0147] The following examples are included for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention.
[0148] Example 1. Preparation of hair cleaning material
[0149] Exemplary hair cleaning compositions are provided in Tables 2-6. Exemplary hair cleaning compositions are prepared by conventional formulation and mixing techniques, or by mixing together one or more polyols (e.g., glycerol), water, and surfactants and any solids that need to be melted at high temperatures. The ingredients are fully mixed at high temperatures and then cooled to ambient temperature. Additional ingredients are added to the cooled product. Unless otherwise indicated, the amounts reflect the weight percent of active substances.

[0164] Example 2. Evaluation of the efficacy of hair cleansing products during and after cleaning
[0165] Hair cleansing compositions were prepared according to Example 1. Hair cleansing compositions were evaluated using a survey that determined the sensory effects of hair cleansing on shine, texture (ie, smoothness), bounce, and hardness. Sensory effects were evaluated during rinsing and after drying.
[0166] A human hair tress having a length of 25 cm, a width of 5.5 cm, and a weight of 10 g was gently rinsed with warm water at 40°C. Excessive moisture was removed, and the tress was fully foamed for about 1 minute, using 1.5 g of the hair cleanser composition per 10 g of the hair tress cleanser. The foamed hair was subjected to sensory evaluation to determine its smoothness. 20 people conducted the evaluation, and the total evaluation value is shown. The evaluation criteria were: 4: good sliding, 3: slight sliding, 2: not very good sliding, and 1: no sliding.
[0167] A human hair tress having a length of 25 cm, a width of 5.5 cm, and a weight of 10 g was gently rinsed with warm water at 40° C. Excessive moisture was removed, and the tress was fully foamed for about 1 minute, using 1.5 g of the hair cleanser composition per 10 g of the hair tress cleanser. The foamed hair was rinsed with tap water (2 L / min) at 40° C. for 1 minute. Excessive moisture was removed with a towel and the tress was air-dried. After drying, the dry hair was subjected to a sensory evaluation to determine its glossiness and uniformity. 20 people performed the evaluation, and the total evaluation value is shown. The evaluation criteria are: 4: good, 3: slightly good, 2: not very good, and 1: not good.
[0168] A human hair tress having a length of 25 cm, a width of 5.5 cm, and a weight of 10 g was thoroughly rinsed with warm water at 40° C. The hair tress was thoroughly foamed for about 1 minute using 5 g or 10 g of the hair cleansing composition. The foamed hair was thoroughly rinsed with tap water at 40° C. (2 L / min). Excess moisture was removed using a towel and the hair tress was dried with warm air from a hair dryer. After drying, the dry hair was subjected to a sensory evaluation to determine its elasticity. 25 people performed the evaluation, and the total evaluation value is shown. The evaluation criteria were: 4: significant improvement in elasticity, 3: visible improvement in elasticity and hardness, 2: slight improvement in elasticity, 1: no improvement in elasticity, and 0: loss of elasticity.
[0169] Example 3. Evaluation of cleaning efficacy using FTIR
[0170] Bleached hair samples can be obtained. Some of the bleached hair samples can be treated with the hair cleaning composition described herein. For treated and untreated samples, a cryostat will be used to prepare cross sections, and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) will be used to examine the cross sections. Using this technology, a hyperspectral image will be generated, which can be used to visualize the lipid content in the hair fiber, assess the hair damage (i.e., chemical treatment or UV exposure) in the hair fiber, identify the modification of the hair structure (i.e., protein conformation or lipid organization), evaluate hair hydration (i.e., water content), visualize the active penetration in the hair fiber, and determine the efficacy of the cleaning product in removing sebum and products in the hair.
[0171] ATR-FTIR can be used to scan individual fibers of treated and untreated samples longitudinally, which can provide infrared images of approximately the outer 1-2 microns of the fiber surface. These hyperspectral images can be used to determine lipid content in the cuticle, study hair damage along the fiber (i.e., chemical treatment or UV exposure), analyze the deposition of active ingredients along the hair fiber, identify changes in hair structure (i.e., protein conformation or lipid organization), evaluate hair hydration (i.e., water content), and determine the efficacy of cleansers and products in removing sebum from the hair strands.
[0172] Example 4: Evaluation of Metal Reduction / Chelation
[0173] Bleached hair samples can be obtained. Some of the bleached hair samples can be treated with the hair cleaning compositions described herein. Treated and untreated samples can be rinsed with hard water and examined using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Spectra of calcium, magnesium, copper, aluminum, iron, chromium, zinc, nickel, cadmium, lead and mercury can be obtained.
