Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present application relates to personal care compositions, and more specifically to personal care compositions comprising: (a) a surfactant system comprising at least one anionic surfactant and at least one amphoteric surfactant; and (b) at least one tear film protectant, wherein the personal care composition has a pH ranging from about 4.0 to about 6.0. Background Art
[0002] Personal care composition products such as body washes, shampoos, conditioners, and shower gels are becoming increasingly popular in the United States and around the world. A desirable personal care composition must meet many criteria. For example, in order to be accepted by consumers, a body wash composition should exhibit good cleaning properties, should exhibit good lathering properties, should be mild to the skin (not causing drying or irritation), and preferably should even provide conditioning benefits to the skin.
[0003] Shower gel (sometimes referred to as shower gel) is a generic term for describing a preparation containing a liquid surfactant for cleaning the body, while shampoo and conditioner are generic terms for describing a preparation containing a liquid surfactant for claiming and / or conditioning hair. Typically, personal care compositions can play a role in cleaning and / or conditioning the body (including both skin and hair). Although sometimes generally regarded as "soap", such personal care compositions do not typically include soap, such as sodium or potassium salts of fatty acids. Conventional personal care compositions typically include one of the multiple components including one or more surfactants, various emollients, fragrances and other personal care ingredients. When compared with common soap, conventional personal care compositions provide less skin irritation, improved foaming under hard water conditions, and leave less residue on skin and bathroom fixtures.
[0004] Typical personal care compositions are generally intended for use by adults. Young children (including infants and toddlers) may have more delicate, sensitive skin and may be more sensitive to eye irritation caused by accidental deposition of personal care compositions into the eyes due to body and / or hair washing processes. Therefore, many conventional personal care compositions may not be suitable for use by children due to irritating ingredients. Therefore, gentle, environmentally acceptable personal care compositions for young children are desired, such as products designated as "tear-free" body wash and / or shampoo formulations and / or products containing mostly natural ingredients or all-natural ingredients (including biodegradable ingredients). DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0013] For the purpose of illustration, the principle of the present disclosure is described by referring to a plurality of exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure. Although certain embodiments of the present disclosure are specifically described herein, it will be readily appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art that the same principles are equally applicable to other compositions and methods and can be used in other compositions and methods. Before describing the disclosed embodiments of the present disclosure in detail, it should be understood that the present disclosure is not limited to the details of any particular embodiment disclosed herein in terms of its application. The terms used herein are for the purpose of description rather than limitation.
[0014] As used herein and in the appended claims, the singular forms "a", "an", and "the" include plural references unless the context dictates otherwise. The singular form of any class of components refers not only to one chemical substance within that class, but also to mixtures of these chemical substances. The terms "a" (or "a kind"), "one / kind or more / kind", and "at least one / kind" may be used interchangeably herein. The terms "comprising", "including", and "having" may be used interchangeably. The term "including" should be interpreted as "including, but not limited to". The term "comprising" should be interpreted as "including, but not limited to".
[0015] As used throughout, ranges are used as shorthand for describing the individual values and each value within the range. Any value within the range can be selected as the end value of the range. Therefore, a range of 1 to 5 specifically includes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and subranges such as 2 to 5, 3 to 5, 2 to 3, 2 to 4, 1 to 4, etc.
[0016] The term "about" when referring to a number means any number within 10% of the number. For example, the phrase "about 2 weight %" means a number between and including 1.8 weight % and 2.2 weight %.
[0017] All references cited herein are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. In the event of a conflict in a definition in the present disclosure and that of a cited reference, the present disclosure controls.
[0018] Unless otherwise indicated, abbreviations and symbols as used herein have their ordinary meanings. The abbreviation "wt%" means the percentage by weight relative to the personal care composition. The symbol "°" refers to degrees, such as temperature degrees or angle degrees. The symbols "h", "min", "mL", "nm" and "μm" refer to hours, minutes, milliliters, nanometers and micrometers, respectively. The abbreviation "rpm" means revolutions per minute.
[0019] When referring to chemical structures and names, the symbols "C", "H" and "O" mean carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, respectively. The symbols "-", "=" and "≡" mean a single bond, a double bond and a triple bond, respectively.
[0020] As used herein, "volatile" means a flash point below about 100°C. As used herein, "non-volatile" means a flash point above about 100°C.
[0021] Any member of a species list used to exemplify or define a genus may be mutually distinct from, overlap with, be a subset of, be equivalent to, be nearly identical to, or be identical to any other member of the species list. Furthermore, unless explicitly stated, such as when reciting Markush groups, a species list defining or exemplifying a genus is open-ended, given that there may be other species that define or exemplify the genus just as well as or better than any other species listed.
[0022] The phrase "a mixture thereof", "a combination thereof" or "a combination of two or more thereof" does not require that the mixture contains all of A, B, C, D, E and F (although it may contain all of A, B, C, D, E and F). Rather, it means a mixture that may include any two or more of A, B, C, D, E and F. In other words, it is equivalent to the phrase "one or more elements selected from A, B, C, D, E, F, and a mixture of any two or more of A, B, C, D, E and F". Likewise, the term "salt thereof" also relates to "salts thereof". Therefore, when the present disclosure refers to “an element selected from A, B, C, D, E, F, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof”, it means that it may include one or more of A, B, C, D and F, may include one or more of the salts of A, the salts of B, the salts of C, the salts of D, the salts of E and the salts of F, or may include a mixture of any two of A, B, C, D, E, F, the salts of A, the salts of B, the salts of C, the salts of D, the salts of E and the salts of F.
[0023] All components and elements affirmatively set forth in the present disclosure may be negatively excluded from the claims. In other words, the personal care compositions of the present disclosure may be free of or substantially free of all components and elements affirmatively recited throughout the present disclosure. In some cases, the personal care compositions of the present disclosure may be substantially free of unincidental amounts of ingredients or compounds described herein. An unincidental amount of an ingredient or compound is the amount of the ingredient or compound added alone to the personal care composition. For example, a personal care composition may be substantially free of unincidental amounts of an ingredient or compound, although such an ingredient or compound may be present as part of a raw material included in a blend of two or more compounds.
[0024] Some of the different categories of components identified may overlap. In such cases where there may be overlap and the personal care composition contains two components (or the composition contains more than two overlapping components), the overlapping compounds do not represent more than one component. For example, certain compounds may be referred to as both surfactants and emulsifiers. If a particular personal care composition contains both surfactants and emulsifiers, then a compound that may be referred to as both a surfactant and an emulsifier will only function as a surfactant or an emulsifier—not both.
[0025] For readability purposes, chemical functional groups are presented in their adjective form; for each adjective, the word "group" is assumed to be used. For example, the adjective "alkyl" without a noun following it should be read as "alkyl group."
[0026] Certain aspects of the present disclosure relate to personal care compositions, and preferably personal care compositions having a natural origin index of about 90% or greater, for example as measured in accordance with ISO Standard 16128. It has been found that personal care compositions formulated with certain surfactant systems can advantageously achieve the desired thickening while having a preferred natural origin index and / or biodegradability index, and are also mild enough for use on the delicate skin of young children or infants and do not cause undesirable eye irritation. ISO Standard 16128-1:2016 provides guidance for the definition of natural ingredients and organic cosmetic ingredients.
[0027] The personal care composition may have a Natural Origin Index of about 90% or greater, for example, as measured according to ISO Standard 16128. [0083] Example
[0084] Example 1
[0085] Four non-limiting exemplary personal care compositions (Example Compositions A, B, C, and D) were prepared and evaluated against a comparative formulation of a children's 3-in-1 bath gel product advertised as a "tear-free" formulation.
[0086] Composition A contained SLES and cocamidopropyl betaine surfactant system. Compositions B to D contained no SLES and contained the following surfactant systems:
[0087] Composition B: cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-glucoside, disodium cocoamphodiacetate (3.95%) and disodium 2-sulfolaurate;
[0088] Composition C: cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-glucoside, sodium methyl oleyl taurate and disodium 2-sulfolaurate; and
[0089] Composition D: Cocamidopropyl betaine, coco-glucoside, disodium cocoamphodiacetate (6.565%) and disodium 2-sulfolaurate.
[0090] The tear film protectant used in composition A was 5% glycerin, while the tear film protectants used in compositions B to C were 5% glycerin and 0.75% glyceryl oleate.
[0091] The formulations of Example Compositions A to D are shown in Table 1 below.
[0092] Table 1 - Summary of Test Compositions
[0093]
[0094] Example compositions A to D were evaluated for stability under 13 week accelerated aging conditions. The results of the stability studies are shown in Table 2 below.
[0095] Table 2 - Formulation stability studies
[0096]
[0097] Hand washing and SITA Foam Tester foam studies were conducted using a comparative product (Comparative #1) and a shower gel product (Comparative #2) as a benchmark. Comparative #1 contained the following ingredients: water; a surfactant system comprising cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium myreth sulfate, and decyl glucoside; sodium benzoate; glycerin; bisabolol; and a thickening system comprising PEG-200 hydrogenated glyceryl palmitate, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, and sodium chloride. Comparative Product #1 had a pH of about 4.5 and a viscosity of about 3700 cps (spindle 4, 20 rpm, 1 minute). Comparative Product #2 contained decyl glucoside and xanthan gum.
[0098] In the hand washing test, composition B performed best, followed by composition C, composition A, comparison #1, composition D, and comparison #2. In the SITA foam test, foam volume and bubble size were evaluated. Regarding foam volume, composition A had the highest foam volume, followed by composition B and composition C, all of which were better than composition D, comparison #1, and comparison #2. Comparison #1 showed a foam volume / mL of 835.5 and comparison #2 showed a foam volume / mL of 647.6. Compositions A, B, and C had foam volumes / mL of 873.6, 857.7, and 856.1, respectively, and composition D had a foam volume / mL of 621.5.
[0099] Example 2 - Human Eye Irritation (HEI) Test
[0100] HEI testing was performed on each of Compositions A to D and Comparative #1. Before and at the end of the HEI test, the eyes of all subjects were examined and graded by an ophthalmologist for the presence or absence of tearing, conjunctival irritation, and overall redness or hyperemia of the sclera. The parameters were evaluated on a scale of 0 to 4 as follows: (0) none; (0.5) very slight; (1) slight; (2) moderate; (3) marked; and (4) very severe. Visual acuity testing and evaluation was performed on each subject before and after the application of the drops. Additionally, the subjects were asked to rate the intensity or perceived discomfort of the drops within 10 seconds of application using the following 0 to 5 perceived discomfort scale: (0) no stinging; (1) very slight stinging; (2) weak stinging, no pain; (3) moderate stinging, with or without pain; (4) tolerable pain and stinging; and (5) severe pain and unbearable stinging.
[0101] Drops (45 μL) of the formulation were placed in the eyes of 20 subjects. For each subject, control drops were placed in one eye (left or right eye) and test drops were placed in the other eye.
[0102] For Phase I HEI testing, the control and test formulations were diluted into four different solutions ranging from 1% to 7.5% (1%, 3%, 5% and 7.5%, n=5 for all groups). Next, for Phase II HEI testing, the control and test formulations were diluted into 7.5% solutions and drops (45 μL) were applied to the subjects and the results were graded by an ophthalmologist.
[0103] In the HEI test, Composition A was associated with more perceived discomfort, conjunctival irritation, scleral redness, and tearing than Comparative # 1. However, as shown in Table 3 below, the results were not significant.

[0113] As shown above, all four test compositions A to D passed the HEI test. Overall, the three sulfate-free formulations performed better than the SLES formulation. While not wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that this may be due to a milder surfactant system, higher pH, and more tear film protectants. While not wishing to be bound by theory, the superior performance of compositions B and C relative to composition D may be due to the higher level of disodium cocoamphodiacetate in composition D.
