Description

TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present application relates to an optical module, in particular, an optical module comprising nonlinear heat dissipation fins. BACKGROUND

[0002] Optical modules can transmit and / or receive optical signals for applications such as, but not limited to, data centers, cable TV, and fiber to the home (FTTH). Using optical modules to transmit can provide higher transmission rates and signal bandwidths over longer transmission distances. To promote compatibility of global optical internet products and reduce maintenance burdens, organizations such as Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) have developed several form factors suitable for different signal transmission rates. These form factors include, but are not limited to, XFP, SFP, QSFP (Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable), QSFP-DD (Double Density), OSFP (Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable), and CPO (Co-Packaged Optics).

[0003] Existing optical modules face challenges in optical efficiency (power), space management, thermal management, insertion loss, and manufacturing yield. SUMMARY

[0004] The present application provides an optical module to help solve the problems of existing optical modules.

[0005] The disclosed optical module comprises a housing and a heat dissipation structure. The heat dissipation structure is located on the outer surface of the housing, and comprises a plurality of nonlinear fins. Each of the nonlinear fins extends in the longitudinal direction of the housing, and the nonlinear fins are arranged along the transverse direction of the housing. Among them, two adjacent nonlinear fins form a flow channel together, and the shapes of the two adjacent nonlinear fins are substantially linearly symmetric with respect to the longitudinal axis of the housing.

[0006] The application also discloses a light module. The light module comprises a housing and a heat dissipation structure. The heat dissipation structure is located on the outer surface of the housing. The heat dissipation structure comprises a plurality of non-linear fins. Adjacent two of the non-linear fins jointly form a flow channel. Each of the non-linear fins comprises a plurality of linear sections and a plurality of non-linear sections. The non-linear sections jointly form a plurality of wide sections of the flow channel. The linear sections jointly form a plurality of narrow sections of the flow channel. The linear sections of each of the non-linear fins comprise a first end linear section and a plurality of intermediate linear sections. The intermediate linear sections are arranged alternately with the non-linear sections. The length of the first end linear section is greater than the length of each of the intermediate linear sections.

[0007] According to the light module of the application, when the working fluid such as cold air flows from the light interface end to the electrical interface end of the light module, the flow rate (the displacement amount per unit time) of the working fluid flowing through the narrow sections can be improved, so that the working fluid flowing to the electrical interface end has a higher flow rate. Compared with the existing flat heat dissipation fins, the flow rate of the working fluid flowing to the electrical interface end can be improved by about 50%. In addition, the wide sections help to increase the contact area of the working fluid and the non-linear fins. Therefore, the flow channel formed by the non-linear fins and comprising the wide sections and the narrow sections with different widths helps to improve the heat dissipation capacity of the heat dissipation structure.

[0008] The above description of the application and the following description of the embodiments are used to demonstrate and explain the spirit and principles of the application, and provide further explanation for the protection scope of the application. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0054] The detailed features and advantages of the present application are described in detail in the embodiments below, which are sufficient to enable a person of ordinary skill in the art to understand the technical content of the present application and implement it, and according to the content, protection scope and drawings disclosed in the present specification, a person of ordinary skill in the art can easily understand the related purposes and advantages of the present application. The following examples further illustrate the concepts of the present application, but do not limit the scope of the present application in any way.

[0055] The heat management of the optical module mainly involves transferring the heat generated by the elements to the housing for heat dissipation. As the demand for high-speed optical communication increases, the power consumption of the optical module also increases, thereby requiring higher heat dissipation efficiency. Providing or forming heat dissipation fins on the housing of the optical module is one of the solutions to improve the heat dissipation efficiency. However, the existing heat dissipation fins are linearly extended flat fins, and their heat dissipation capacity cannot meet the future demand.

[0056] According to an embodiment of the present application, when the working fluid such as cold air flows from the optical interface port to the electrical interface port of the optical module, the flow rate (the displacement amount per unit time of the fluid) of the working fluid flowing through the narrow section can be increased, so that the working fluid flowing to the electrical interface port has a higher flow rate. Compared with the existing flat heat dissipation fins, the flow rate of the working fluid flowing to the electrical interface port can be increased by about 50%. In addition, the wide section helps to increase the contact area of the working fluid and the nonlinear fin. Therefore, the flow channel formed by the nonlinear fin and comprising the wide sections and the narrow sections with different widths helps to improve the heat dissipation capacity of the heat dissipation structure.

[0061] Referring to Figure 1 FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an optical module according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The optical module 100 can include a plurality of elements disposed within a housing 110. Further, the optical module 100 can be understood as an optical transceiver or an optical subassembly, and the housing 110 can be understood as a hermetic package or a non-hermetic package. Figure 1An exemplary optical module 100 as an optical transceiver can include a substrate 120 disposed within a housing 110. In addition, the optical module 100 can also include a transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA) 130 and a receiver optical subassembly (ROSA) 140 coupled to the substrate 120. In other embodiments where the optical module 100 is an optical subassembly, the optical module 100 can include one of a receiver optical subassembly and a transmitter optical subassembly.

[0062] The substrate 120 can be understood as a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). One end of the substrate 120 can extend from the housing 110 to an exterior to allow electrical interconnection of the optical module 100 with external circuitry. The transmitter optical subassembly 130 and the receiver optical subassembly 140 can be used to transmit and receive signals of multiple channel wavelengths, respectively. Specifically, the transmitter optical subassembly 130 can transmit optical signals of four different channel wavelengths, and the receiver optical subassembly 140 can receive optical signals of four different channel wavelengths (λ1, λ2, λ3, λ4).

The transmitting connection circuit 160 can drive the optical transmitting unit 131 of the optical transmitting sub-module 130. Further, the substrate 120 can have a conductive line 121 electrically connecting the transmitting connection circuit 160 with the optical transmitting unit 131. The transmitting connection circuit 160 can receive a driving signal (e.g., driving signals TX_D1 to TX_D4 in FIG. 1) from an external circuit. The optical transmitting unit 131 can emit an optical signal of a specific channel wavelength according to the driving signal. In addition, the substrate 120 can also have a conductive line 122 electrically connecting the receiving connection circuit 170 with the amplifier 143. The optical receiving unit 142 can convert the optical signal into an electrical signal and output the electrical signal to the amplifier 143, so that the electrical signal can be amplified and / or modulated. Then, the electrical signal can be output as, for example, electrical signals RX_D1 to RX_D4 in FIG. 1 through the receiving connection circuit 170. Figure 1 Figure 1

[0066] The transmitting connection circuit 160 and the receiving connection circuit 170 can each be understood as a circuit board pin. [0067] Figure 2 A block diagram of an optical module according to another embodiment of the present application is shown. The optical module 100a has a similar architecture as the optical module 100, except that the optical module 100a can include an optical transmitting sub-module 130a without a multiplexing unit and an optical receiving sub-module 140a without a demultiplexing unit. [0069] The optical module may include a heat dissipation structure. Please refer to [reference needed]. Figures 3 to 6 ,in Figure 3 This is a three-dimensional schematic diagram of an optical module according to another embodiment of the present invention. Figure 4 for Figure 3 A top-view diagram of the optical module. Figure 5 for Figure 4 A partially enlarged schematic diagram of the optical module, and Figure 6 for Figure 3 A cross-sectional schematic diagram of the optical module. In this embodiment, the optical module 200 may include a housing 210 and a heat dissipation structure 220.

[0070] The housing 210 can be a single housing, or it can be a multi-part housing comprising an upper housing and a lower housing. The housing 210 can be understood as... Figure 1 or Figure 2 The housing 110 in the middle, and the outer surface of the housing 210 can be understood as the top surface or bottom surface of the housing 210. The housing 210 can accommodate, for example Figure 1 or Figure 2 The substrate 120, the light emitting sub-module 130, and the light receiving sub-module 140 are included.

[0071] The heat dissipation structure 220 may be located on the outer surface of the housing 210, and the heat dissipation structure 220 may include multiple nonlinear fins 221. Each nonlinear fin 221 may extend in the longitudinal direction D1 of the housing 210, and the nonlinear fins 221 may be arranged along the transverse direction D2 of the housing 210. Based on appearance improvement or dimensional specifications, the top of the nonlinear fins 221 may be covered by a cover plate (not shown separately).

[0072] Here, the term "nonlinear fin" can refer to a fin that at least a portion does not extend along the longitudinal direction D1 of the housing 210. More specifically, the nonlinear fin 221 may extend from one end of the housing 210 to the other end, wherein the two ends may respectively have an optical interface OI and an electrical interface EI of the optical module 200. The optical interface OI can be understood as... Figure 1 Fiber optic connectors 151, 152 or Figure 2 The fiber optic connector 153 in the text, and the electrical interface EI can be understood as... Figure 1 or Figure 2 The transmitting connection circuit 160 or receiving connection circuit 170 is included. The nonlinear fin 221 can be fixed to the outer surface of the housing 210, or the housing 210 and the nonlinear fin 221 can be integrally formed into a single piece.

[0073] In the transverse direction D2 of the housing 210, two adjacent nonlinear fins 221 can jointly form a flow channel FC. In addition, the shapes of the two adjacent nonlinear fins 221 can be substantially linearly symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal axis LA of the housing 210. Further, each nonlinear fin 221 can include a plurality of linear portions 222 and a plurality of nonlinear portions 223. The linear portions 222 and the nonlinear portions 223 can be connected to each other. For the two adjacent nonlinear fins 221, the linear portions 222 can be symmetrically arranged with respect to the longitudinal axis LA, and the nonlinear portions 223 can also be symmetrically arranged with respect to the longitudinal axis LA.

[0074] The linear portions 222 and the nonlinear portions 223 can be alternately arranged to form a plurality of wide sections WS and a plurality of narrow sections NS of the flow channel FC. Further, for the two adjacent nonlinear fins 221, the nonlinear portions 223 can jointly form the wide sections WS, and the linear portions 222 can jointly form the narrow sections NS. Figure 4 and Figure 5 Exemplarily, the linear portions 222 extending along the longitudinal direction D1 of the housing 210 form straight narrow sections NS, and the nonlinear portions 223 include wide sections WS substantially in the shape of polygons formed by linear sections 224 in different directions, but the present application is not limited thereto. In other embodiments, the nonlinear portions 223 can be jagged, circular-arc, or wavy from a top view or a bottom view. Figure 5 Exemplarily, each nonlinear portion 223 includes three linear sections 224, two of which have extending directions substantially intersecting the longitudinal axis LA, and the other one of which has an extending direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis LA.

[0075] The linear portions 222 of each nonlinear fin 221 can include a first end linear portion EL1 and a plurality of intermediate linear portions IL. The intermediate linear portions IL can be alternately arranged with the nonlinear portions 223. Further, for the two adjacent nonlinear fins 221, the intermediate linear portions IL and the nonlinear portions 223 can be alternately arranged, and the intermediate linear portions IL can jointly form the narrow sections NS of the flow channel FC. The first end linear portion EL1 can be closer to the electrical interface EI of the optical module 200 than the intermediate linear portions IL.

[0076] The linear portions 222 of each nonlinear fin 221 can further include a second end linear portion EL2. The second end linear portion EL2 can be closer to the optical interface OI of the optical module 200 than the intermediate linear portions IL and the first end linear portion EL1. That is, the first end linear portion EL1 and the second end linear portion EL2 can be adjacent to opposite ends of the optical module 200, respectively, and the intermediate linear portions IL and the nonlinear portions 223 can be between the first end linear portion EL1 and the second end linear portion EL2.

[0077] Please refer toFigure 4 and Figure 5 When the working fluid, such as cold air, flows from the optical interface end OIP to the electrical interface end EIP of the optical module 200, the flow rate (the amount of displacement per unit of time) of the working fluid flowing through the narrow sections NS can be increased, so that the working fluid flowing to the electrical interface end EIP has a higher flow rate. Compared to the existing flat plate-shaped heat dissipation fins, the flow rate of the working fluid flowing to the electrical interface end EIP can be increased by, for example but not limited to, about 50%. In addition, the wide sections WS help to increase the contact area between the working fluid and the nonlinear fins 221. Therefore, the flow channel FC formed by the nonlinear fins 221 including the wide sections WS and the narrow sections NS of different widths helps to increase the heat dissipation capacity of the heat dissipation structure 220.

[0078] Without affecting the size of the optical module 200, the length of at least one of the first end linear portion EL1 and the second end linear portion EL2 can be increased as much as possible, so that the flow rate of the working fluid can be increased to the greatest extent. Further, the length of the first end linear portion EL1 can be greater than the length of each intermediate linear portion IL, and the length of the second end linear portion EL2 can be greater than the length of each intermediate linear portion IL.

[0079] Please refer to Figure 6 The first end linear portion EL1 of each nonlinear fin 221 can correspond to at least one of a transimpedance amplifier (TIA), a digital signal processor (DSP), a laser diode (LD), and a laser driver (LDD) of the optical module 200. Further, the first end linear portion EL1 can be configured to correspond to one or more high-power active elements regarded as heat sources HS. Specifically, in the case of, for example, an eight-channel small form-factor pluggable (OSFP) optical module, the high-power active elements are close to the electrical interface of the optical module, resulting in a significantly higher temperature of the electrical interface. In this case, configuring the first end linear portion EL1 close to the electrical interface end EIP helps to optimize the heat dissipation capacity of the heat dissipation structure 220.

[0080] Figure 7 is a top view schematic diagram of an optical module according to another embodiment of the present application. In the present embodiment, the heat dissipation structure 220a of the optical module 200a can include nonlinear fins 221a. The nonlinear fins 221a can include linear portions 222a and nonlinear portions 223a, and the linear portions 222a can include a first end linear portion EL1, a second end linear portion EL2, and an intermediate linear portion ILa. Each nonlinear portion 223a of the nonlinear fins 221a can be substantially arc-shaped. Figure 7 An exemplary nonlinear portion 223a formed by an arc line is shown, and the arc-shaped nonlinear portion 223a forms a wide section WSa that is substantially elliptical.

[0081] Figure 8FIG. 20B is a top view of a light module according to yet another embodiment of the present application. In this embodiment, the heat dissipation structure 220b of the light module 200b can include a nonlinear fin 221b. The nonlinear fin 221b can include linear portions 222b and nonlinear portions 223b, and the nonlinear fin 221b can include only end linear portions without intermediate linear portions. In detail, the linear portions 222b of the nonlinear fin 221b can include only a first end linear portion EL1 and a second end linear portion EL2. Further, the nonlinear portions 223b of the nonlinear fin 221b are directly connected to form a wide section WSb in a substantially circular shape and a narrow section NSb in a substantially hourglass shape.

[0082] The embodiments of the present application are disclosed as above, but are not intended to limit the present application. The shape, configuration, feature and spirit described in the scope of the present application can be changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the present application.
