A center-penetration vacuum ultraviolet reactor for the removal of trace total organic carbon in water

By designing a center-penetrating vacuum ultraviolet reactor, water flows directly through the inner cavity of the hollow ultraviolet lamp tube, solving the problems of low ultraviolet light utilization and insufficient reaction efficiency. This achieves efficient TOC removal and convenient maintenance, making it suitable for high-purity water preparation and deep purification.

Abstract

This invention discloses a center-penetration vacuum ultraviolet (UV) reactor for the removal of trace total organic carbon (TOC) in water. It includes a reactor shell with an inlet and an outlet, a vacuum UV lamp emitting 185 nm wavelength, and a water flow pipe. The vacuum UV lamp is a hollow cylindrical structure housed within the reactor shell. The water flow pipe is axially installed within the cavity of the vacuum UV lamp, located within its irradiation area. Both ends of the water flow pipe are sealed and extend beyond the shell wall of the vacuum UV lamp, connecting to the inlet and outlet of the reactor shell. This invention allows the water flow pipe to pass directly through the interior of the vacuum UV lamp, eliminating the need for a traditional quartz sleeve, thus significantly reducing UV attenuation and improving UV light utilization. This reactor is suitable for high-purity water preparation processes, reducing TOC from approximately 500 ppb to below 100 ppb, with a removal efficiency more than 50% higher than traditional externally irradiated reactors. It also features a compact structure and high efficiency.
