[0025] A bumper 10 for a vehicle is mounted on the front or rear of a vehicle to protect the vehicle body, and a front bumper may be provided at the front and a rear bumper may be provided at the rear.
[0026] The bumper 10 for a vehicle according to various exemplary embodiments of the invention can be used as both the front bumper and the rear bumper, but for convenience of explanation, it is assumed herein that the bumper 10 for the vehicle is used as the rear bumper, which is more likely to be involved in a low-speed collision.
[0027] As in Fig. As shown in Figure 1, the bumper 10 for a vehicle includes a bumper cover 20 forming an outer surface. The bumper cover 20 forms the outermost side of the bumper 10 for the vehicle, so that the outer surface is exposed when the bumper cover 20 is mounted on the vehicle.
[0028] The bumper cover 20 may be manufactured by injection molding a synthetic resin, and the shape of the bumper cover 20 may be modified into various shapes in consideration of the design or characteristics of the vehicle using the bumper 10 for the vehicle.
[0029] The bumper 10 for the vehicle is provided with a reinforcing structure 30 coupled to the rear surface of the bumper cover 20 to reinforce the bumper cover 20.
[0030] The reinforcement structure 30 can play a role in absorbing the impact energy upon deformation during a collision of the vehicle and distributing the impact from the collision evenly to the vehicle body.
[0031] The reinforcing structure 30 may be formed with a fiber-reinforced composite material in a linear shape arranged in the longitudinal direction of the bumper cover 20 and directly coupled to the rear surface of the bumper cover 20 by being inserted into the injection-molded bumper cover 20.
[0032] The fiber-reinforced composite material is a combination of at least two or more components, which refers to a material having a structure in which a reinforcing component, such as glass or carbon fiber, is impregnated in a base component, such as a resin.
[0033] The reinforcement structure 30 formed with such a fiber-reinforced composite material can have a relatively low weight while meeting the same level of stiffness requirement compared to a rear beam of the existing bumper formed with a metallic material.
[0034] Among the fiber-reinforced composite materials, a continuous fiber thermoplastic (CFT) composite material made by continuously impregnating a base component with reinforcing fibers may be particularly suitable as a material for the reinforcing structure 30.
[0035] The CFT composite material has the advantages of both high rigidity and ensuring mechanical properties compared to other normal fiber-reinforced composite materials, which makes it easy to manufacture the reinforcement structure 30.
[0036] Accordingly, since the reinforcement structure 30 is directly attached to the rear surface of the injection-molded bumper cover 20 in an inserted manner and is therefore integrated with the bumper cover 20, the bumper 10 can ensure protection against collision for the vehicle and eliminate the need for a rear beam.
[0037] Furthermore, the reinforcing structure 30 formed with the fiber-reinforced composite material has a relatively light weight while meeting the same vehicle body rigidity compared to a metallic rear beam, which contributes to a fuel saving effect from reducing the vehicle body weight.
[0038] Furthermore, the bumper 10 for the vehicle with the omitted rear beam can eliminate the need not only for the rear beam but also for a structure for coupling the rear beam to the bumper cover 20, thereby achieving advantages in manufacturing efficiency such as reducing material costs and simplifying the manufacturing process.
[0039] The reinforcing structure 30, which contains fiber components, has a long and thin linear shape, which can achieve elasticity for shock absorption. The reinforcing structure 30 can have a linear shape with a circular cross-section.
[0040] The bumper cover 20 may include a cover main body 21 having a front surface exposed outside and a clip portion 22 into which the reinforcing structure 30 is inserted.
[0041] The cover main body 21 may be in the form of a plate extending along the vehicle width. The cover main body 21 may have both end portions bent in the longitudinal direction of the bumper cover 20 to cover both sides of the vehicle body at the rear, and a portion between the two end portions of the cover main body 21 may be formed with a gentle rearward curve. The reinforcing structure 30 may be coupled to the cover main body 21 such that it is positioned between the two end portions of the cover main body 21 with the gentle curve.
[0042] The clip portion 22 may be disposed behind the rear surface of the cover main body 21 and provided with a coupling groove 22a for inserting the reinforcing structure 30. The coupling groove 22a may be formed to open at the lower portion of the clip portion 22.
[0043] The coupling groove 22a may be formed to envelop more than half of the circumference of the reinforcing structure 30, and when the reinforcing structure 30 is pressed from the lower portion of the clip portion 22 toward the coupling groove 22a, it may be inserted into and fixed in the coupling groove 22a in such a manner that it is elastically supported in the coupling groove 22a.
[0044] The clip portion 22 may be arranged continuously in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30 or may be arranged in a plurality at a distance from each other in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30 so that the entire longitudinal portions of the reinforcing structure 30 can be coupled to the rear surface of the bumper cover 20 while being stably supported on the rear surface.
[0045] The reinforcing structure 30, which is inserted in the coupling groove 22a, can be glued or thermally fused to the clip portion 22 as required.
[0046] Meanwhile, portions of the bumper cover 20 on the side of the clip portion 22 into which the reinforcing structure 30 is inserted may be thicker than adjacent portions in the forward and backward directions, and accordingly, a sink mark may be formed on the front surface of the bumper cover 20 at a position corresponding to the clip portion 22 due to a partial difference in cooling rate during a cooling process of the injection-molded bumper cover 20 and likely to be exposed on the outside.
[0047] To solve this problem, the bumper cover 20 may include a connector 23 for connecting between the cover main body 21 and the clip portion 22, and the connector 23 may connect the cover main body 21 and the clip portion 22 with a gap therebetween.
[0048] With the present structure of the bumper cover 20, the clip portion 22 may be retracted behind the cover main body 21 and hidden by the cover main body 21 to prevent it from being exposed to the outside.
[0049] Accordingly, in the bumper cover 20, the clip portion 22 has an increased thickness so that it can be attached to the reinforcing structure 30, which eliminates the possibility of an externally exposed sink mark even if the sink mark is formed on the surface of the clip portion 22 during a cooling process after injection molding.
[0050] As a result, the reinforcement structure 30 prevents deterioration of the external appearance of the bumper 10 for the vehicle, so that the bumper 10 for the vehicle can reduce the limitation of using a thick reinforcement structure 30 for reinforcing the bumper cover 20.
[0051] In order to suppress the formation of the sink mark on the front surface of the cover main body 21 due to the connector 23, the connector 23 may be provided such that at least one end portion connected to the cover main body 21 has a thickness t1 thinner than a thickness t2 of the cover main body 21.
[0052] In view of this, the connector 23 may include a first connector 23a connected to the cover main body 21 and a second connector 23b connected to the clip portion 22. The first connector 23a may be thinner than the cover main body 21, and the second connector 23b may be thicker than the first connector 23a, taking into account the strength of the connection with the clip portion 22.
[0053] As in the Fig. 2 to 6, in another exemplary embodiment of the invention, the bumper 10 for the vehicle may include an upper body 40 with the bumper cover 20 forming the upper portion, and a lower body 50 mounted to the upper body 40 to form the lower portion.
[0054] The upper body 40 and the lower body 50 may each be assembled together in an injection-molded state, and the reinforcing structure 30 may be integrated with the bumper cover 20 by being inserted into the clip portion 22 disposed on one of the upper body 40 and the lower body 50.
[0055] The bumper 10 for the vehicle with the upper portion and the lower portion manufactured separately may allow the reinforcement structure 30 to be provided on one of the upper body 40 and the lower body 50, which is selected according to the need for reinforcement in consideration of the characteristics of the vehicle type.
[0056] In the present case, the other of the upper body 40 and the lower body 50, where the reinforcement structure is not provided, does not need to be modified from its injection-molded form in conjunction with the reinforcement structure 30. Accordingly, the bumper 10 for the vehicle may have considered an advantage of using the reinforcement structure 30 by deforming a portion of the mold as a whole.
[0057] Alternatively, when both the upper and lower portions of the bumper cover 20 require reinforcement, the upper body 40 and the lower body 50 each have the clip portion 22, and a pair of reinforcement structures 30 may be provided so as to be inserted into and coupled to the clip portions 22 of the upper and lower bodies 40 and 50.
[0058] The bumper cover 20 may include the cover main body 21 having the front surface exposed to the outside, the clip portion 22 in which the reinforcing structure 30 is inserted and coupled, and the connector 23 connected between the cover main body 21 and the clip portion 22 while keeping the distance therebetween to prevent the formation of a sink mark on the front surface of the cover main body 21 due to the clip portion 22.
[0059] The cover main body 21 may include an upper cover main body 41 forming the upper portion and a lower cover main body 51 forming the lower portion. The upper cover main body 41 may be formed by the front side of the upper body 40, and the lower cover main body 51 may be formed by the front side of the lower body 50.
[0060] The connector 23 may have a mounting portion 23a for mounting between the upper cover main body 41 and the lower cover main body 51.
[0061] The upper body 40 and the lower body 50 may be integrated with each other in a fastening method using a fastener in addition to the mounting portion 23a or in other various coupling structures with a bonding method.
[0062] The mounting portion 23a may include a first mounting portion 42 extending rearward from the lower portion of the upper cover main body 41 and a second mounting portion 52 extending rearward from the upper portion of the lower cover main body 51 so as to be coupled to the first mounting portion 42, so that the mounting portion 23a may be disposed in a boundary portion between the upper cover main body 41 and the lower cover main body 51.
[0063] The second mounting portion 52 may have a mounting hole 52a through which the first mounting portion 42 passes to be inserted therein, and a projection 42a engaging the mounting hole 52a may be provided on the first mounting portion 42. Accordingly, the first mounting portion 42 and the second mounting portion 52 may be mounted together when the first mounting portion 42 is inserted into the mounting hole 52a of the second mounting portion 52 and supported by the projection 42a engaging the mounting hole 52a.
[0064] The clip portion 22 can be connected to the cover main body 21 at a distance therefrom via a lower portion of the second mounting portion 52. Accordingly, the bumper 10 for the vehicle can prevent the formation of sink marks on the front surface of the cover main body 21 due to the clip portion 22 for fixing the reinforcing structure 30, even if the clip portion 22 is formed thick.
[0065] The first mounting portion 42 and the second mounting portion 52 may be positioned interchangeably with each other as long as the first mounting portion 42 extends rearward from one of the upper cover main body 41 and the lower cover main body 51 and the second mounting portion 52 extends rearward from the other of the upper cover main body 41 and the lower cover main body 51.
[0066] The clip portion 22 may be connected to the cover main body 21 at a distance therefrom via the first mounting portion 42 and the second mounting portion 52.
[0067] In the above-described embodiments of the invention, the clip portion 22 and the connector 23 may be provided in the form of a thin rib in the longitudinal direction of the bumper cover 20 and the reinforcing structure 30.
[0068] The clip portion 22 in the rib shape with a thin width may be easily elastically deformable to facilitate the elastic expansion of the coupling groove 22a during the insertion process of the reinforcing structure 30 into the clip portion 22.
[0069] The reinforcing structure 30 may be provided in a linear shape with elasticity, which is bendable but remains in the rectilinear shape when no external force is applied.
[0070] Furthermore, the clip portion 22 may be arranged in a plurality in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30 at certain distances from each other.
[0071] Accordingly, while the reinforcing structure 30 provided in the rectilinear shape is inserted into the plurality of clip portions 22, at least some portions of the reinforcing structure 30 may be bent with a curvature corresponding to that of the cover main body 21 to correspond to the shape of the cover main body 21 and thus be coupled to the cover main body 21.
[0072] Furthermore, the bumper 10 for the vehicle may be provided not only to guide the reinforcing structure 30 into a correct mounting position in a process of inserting the reinforcing structure 30 into the bumper cover 20, but also to suppress the movement of the reinforcing structure 30 mounted with the bumper cover 20 in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30.
[0073] For this purpose, as described in the Fig. 5 and Fig. 6, the reinforcing structure 30 may be provided to have portions having different diameters so that the reinforcing structure 30 can engage with the clip portion 22 in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30 while the reinforcing structure 30 is coupled to the clip portion 22.
[0074] For example, a portion of the reinforcing structure 30 to be inserted into the clip portion 22 may have a diameter corresponding to the size of the coupling groove 22a, and a portion of the reinforcing structure 30 between the clip portion 22 may have a diameter larger than the size of the coupling groove 22a. For reference, the clip portion 22 is shown in an imaginary line in Fig. 5 drawn.
[0075] With reference to Fig. 5, the reinforcing structure 30 may have a shape in which a first diameter portion 31 having a small diameter to be inserted into the clip portion 22 and a second diameter portion 32 having a diameter larger than that of the first diameter portion 31 to be placed between the clip portions 22 are alternately repeatedly arranged in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30.
[0076] Furthermore, the reinforcing structure 30 may be bendable to allow both end portions of the reinforcing structure 30 to engage the outermost clip portions 22 in the longitudinal direction.
[0077] For this purpose, the two end portions of the reinforcing structure 30 may form bending portions 33, which also perform the function of both guiding the reinforcing structure 30 into a correct mounting position in a process of inserting the reinforcing structure 30 into the bumper cover 20 and suppressing the movement of the reinforcing structure 30 mounted with the bumper cover 20 in the longitudinal direction of the reinforcing structure 30.
[0078] When there are bending portions 33 at both ends, the reinforcing structure 30 can be mounted in a right position on the bumper cover 20, and the movement of the reinforcing structure 30 can be suppressed even if the entire longitudinal portions of the reinforcing structure 30 have a uniform diameter corresponding to the size of the coupling groove 22a.
[0079] According to various exemplary embodiments of the invention, a bumper for a vehicle may have a structure that eliminates the need for a rear beam while ensuring protection against collisions.
[0080] According to various exemplary embodiments of the invention, a bumper for a vehicle can achieve the effects of reducing the weight of the vehicle body, reducing material costs, simplifying manufacturing processes, and preventing deterioration of the external appearance.
[0081] For ease of explanation and precise definition in the appended claims, the terms "top," "bottom," "inside," "outside," "front," and "rear" are used to describe features of the exemplary embodiments with reference to the positions of these features as shown in the figures. It is further understood that the term "connect" or variations thereof refer to both direct and indirect connection.
