Abstract
Description
Technical field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to compounds for organic electronic devices, such as organic light-emitting devices. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a metal complex comprising a ligand L a with a structure represented by formula 1a, an organic electroluminescent device containing the metal complex, and a compound composition containing the metal complex background
[0002] Organic electronic devices include, but are not limited to, the following types: organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (O-FETs), organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs), organic photovoltaic devices (OPVs), dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), organic optical detectors, organic photoreceptors, organic field-quench devices (OFQDs), light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), organic laser diodes, and organic plasmon-emitting devices.
[0003] In 1987, Tang and Van Slyke of Eastman Kodak reported on a two-layer organic electroluminescent device comprising an arylamine hole transport layer and a tris-8-hydroxyquinolato aluminum layer as the electron and emitting layer (Applied Physics Letters, 1987, 51(12): 913–915). When a bias voltage was applied to the device, it emitted green light. This device laid the foundation for the development of modern organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). State-of-the-art OLEDs can have multiple layers, such as charge injection and transport layers, charge and exciton blocking layers, and one or more emitting layers between the cathode and anode. Because the OLED is a self-emitting solid-state device, it offers tremendous potential for display and lighting applications.Furthermore, the inherent properties of organic materials, such as their flexibility, make them well-suited for certain applications, such as manufacturing on flexible substrates.
[0004] OLEDs can be classified into three different types according to their emission mechanism. The OLED invented by Tang and van Slyke is a fluorescent OLED. It uses only singlet emission. The triplets generated in the device are wasted via non-radiative decay channels. Therefore, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the fluorescent OLED is only 25%. This limitation hampered the commercialization of OLEDs. In 1997, Forrest and Thompson reported a phosphorescent OLED that uses triplet emission from heavy metal-containing complexes as emitters. This allows both singlets and triplets to be harvested, achieving an IQE of 100%. The discovery and development of phosphorescent OLEDs, due to their high efficiency, directly contributed to the commercialization of active-matrix OLEDs (AMOLEDs).Recently, Adachi achieved high efficiency through thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) of organic compounds. These emitters exhibit a small singlet-triplet gap that allows the transition from triplet back to singlet. In the TADF device, the triplet excitons can undergo reverse intersystem crossing to generate singlet excitons, resulting in a high interquantum emission (IQE).
[0005] OLEDs can also be classified as small-molecule and polymer OLEDs, depending on the shapes of the materials used. A small molecule refers to any organic or organometallic material that is not a polymer. The molecular mass of a small molecule can be large, provided it has a well-defined structure. Dendrimers with well-defined structures are considered small molecules. Polymer OLEDs include conjugated polymers and non-conjugated polymers with emitting side groups. A small-molecule OLED can become a polymer OLED if post-polymerization occurs during the fabrication process.
[0006] There are various methods for manufacturing OLEDs. Low molecular weight OLEDs are generally produced by thermal vacuum evaporation. Polymer OLEDs are manufactured using solution-based processes such as spin coating, inkjet printing, and slot printing. If the material can be dissolved or dispersed in a solvent, the low molecular weight OLED can also be manufactured using a solution-based process.
[0007] The emission color of an OLED can be achieved through the design of the emitter. An OLED can have one or more emitting layers to achieve the desired spectrum. Phosphorescent emitters have been successfully commercialized for green, yellow, and red OLEDs. Blue phosphorescent devices still suffer from an unsaturated blue color, a short device lifespan, and high operating voltage requirements. Commercially available OLED color displays typically employ a hybrid strategy, using fluorescent blue and phosphorescent yellow or red and green. Currently, the efficiency drop of phosphorescent OLEDs at high brightness levels remains a problem. Furthermore, a more saturated emission color, higher efficiency, and a longer device lifespan are desirable.
[0008] Cyanosubstitutions are generally not introduced into phosphorescent metal complexes such as iridium complexes. US 2020 / 0251666 A1, an earlier application of the applicant of the present application, discloses a metal complex with a cyano-substituted ligand. The metal complex is applicable to an organic electroluminescent device and can improve the device's performance and color saturation to a relatively high level in industry, but further improvements are still required.
[0009] CN 1 11 690 016 A1 discloses a metal complex represented by the formula L, where X is specifically selected from C or Si. CN 1 11 690 016 A1 does not disclose a metal complex containing a ligand whose skeletal structure is formed by the combination of pyridine to dibenzofuran / dibenzothiophene / dibenzoselenophene. Furthermore, CN 1 11 690 016 A1 does not disclose a metal complex in which a cyano substituent and a fluorine substituent are simultaneously introduced on such a ligand, nor the use of such a metal complex in an electroluminescence device.
[0010] CN 1 11 808 142 A discloses a metal complex represented by the formula and discloses several metal complexes that differ in the substituents they contain. However, CN 1 11 808 142 A does not disclose a metal complex in which a cyano substituent and a fluorine substituent are simultaneously introduced on a ligand, nor the outstanding effects achieved by such a structural modification. Fig. Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram of another organic light-emitting device which may contain a metal complex and a compound composition disclosed herein. Detailed description
[0016] OLEDs can be manufactured on various types of substrates such as glass, plastic and metal foil. Fig. Figure 1 schematically depicts an organic light-emitting device 100 without restriction. The figures are not necessarily drawn to scale. Some of the layers shown in the figures may be omitted if necessary. The device 100 may comprise a substrate 101, an anode 110, a hole injection layer 120, a hole transport layer 130, an electron blocking layer 140, an emitting layer 150, a hole blocking layer 160, an electron transport layer 170, an electron injection layer 180, and a cathode 190. The device 100 can be fabricated by depositing the described layers in this order. The properties and functions of these various layers, as well as exemplary materials, are described in more detail in US 7,279,704 B2 in columns 6 to 10.
[0017] Further examples of each of these layers are available. For example, a flexible and transparent substrate-anode combination is disclosed in US 5,844,363 A. An example of a p-doped hole transport layer is m-MTDATA doped with F4-TCNQ in a molar ratio of 50:1, as disclosed in US 2003 / 0230980 A1. Examples of host materials are disclosed in US 6,303,238 B1 by Thompson et al. An example of an n-doped electron transport layer is BPhen doped with Li in a molar ratio of 1:1, as disclosed in US 2003 / 0230980 A1. US 5,703,436 A and US 5,707,745 A disclose examples of cathodes, including composite cathodes, that have a thin metal layer, such as Mg:Ag, with an overlying transparent, electrically conductive ITO layer deposited by sputtering. The theory and use of blocking layers are described in more detail in US 6,097,147 A and US 2003 / 0230980 A1.Examples of injection layers are provided in US 2004 / 0174116 A1. A description of protective layers can be found in US 2004 / 0174116 A1.
[0018] The layer structure described above is provided by non-exhaustive examples. Functional OLEDs can be achieved by combining the various described layers in different ways, or layers can be omitted entirely. It can also include other layers not specifically described. Within each layer, a single material or a mixture of several materials can be used to achieve optimal performance. Each functional layer can contain multiple sublayers. For example, the emitting layer can have two layers of different emitting materials to achieve the desired emission spectrum.
[0019] In one embodiment, an OLED can be described as having an "organic layer" arranged between a cathode and an anode. This organic layer can consist of a single layer or multiple layers.
[0020] An OLED can be encapsulated by a barrier layer. Fig. Figure 2 schematically represents an organic light-emitting device 200 without restriction. Fig. 2 differs from Fig.1. The organic light-emitting device includes a barrier layer 102 located above the cathode 190 to protect it from harmful environmental species such as moisture and oxygen. Any material capable of providing the barrier function can be used, for example, glass or organic-inorganic hybrid layers. The barrier layer should be placed directly or indirectly outside the OLED device. A multilayer thin-film encapsulation was described in US 7,968,146 B2.
[0021] Devices manufactured according to embodiments of the present disclosure can be integrated into a wide variety of consumer products that incorporate one or more modules (or units) of electronic components. Some examples of such consumer products include flat panel displays, monitors, medical monitors, televisions, billboards, indoor or outdoor lighting fixtures and / or signaling devices, field-of-view displays, fully or partially transparent displays, flexible displays, smartphones, tablets, phablets, wearable devices, smartwatches, laptop computers, digital cameras, camcorders, viewfinders, microdisplays, 3D displays, vehicle displays, and vehicle taillights.
[0022] The materials and structures described herein may be used in other organic electronic devices listed above.
[0023] As used here, "above" means furthest from the substrate, whereas "below" means closest to the substrate. When a first layer is described as "arranged above" a second layer, the first layer is arranged farther from the substrate. Other layers may be located between the first and second layers unless it is specified that the first layer is "in contact with" the second layer. For example, a cathode may be described as "arranged above" an anode, even though various organic layers may be located between them.
[0024] As used herein, “solution-processable” means the ability to be dissolved, dispersed or transported and / or separated from a liquid medium, either in solution or suspension form.
[0025] A ligand can be described as "photoactive" if it is assumed that the ligand directly contributes to the photoactive properties of an emitting material. A ligand can be described as "helper" if it is assumed that the ligand does not contribute to the photoactive properties of an emitting material, although a helper ligand can modify the properties of a photoactive ligand.
[0026] It is assumed that the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of fluorescent OLEDs can exceed the spin statistics limit of 25% through delayed fluorescence. As used here, two types of delayed fluorescence are present: P-type delayed fluorescence and E-type delayed fluorescence. P-type delayed fluorescence is generated by triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA).
[0027] In contrast, E-type delayed fluorescence is not based on the collision of two triplets, but rather on the transition between triplet states and excited singlet states. Compounds capable of generating E-type delayed fluorescence must have very small singlet-triplet gaps to convert between energy states. Thermal energy can activate the transition from the triplet state back to the singlet state. This type of delayed fluorescence is also known as thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). A special characteristic of TADF is that the delayed component increases with increasing temperature. If the reverse intersystem crossing rate is high enough to minimize non-radiative decay from the triplet state, the proportion of reoccupied excited singlet states can potentially reach 75%.
[0028] The total singlet fraction can be 100%, which far exceeds the 25% spin statistics limit for electrically generated excitons.
[0029] Delayed E-type fluorescence properties can be found in an exciplex system or in a single compound. While not bound to any specific theory, it is generally accepted that delayed E-type fluorescence requires the luminescent material to have a small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE). S-TOrganic, non-metallic, luminescent donor-acceptor materials may be able to achieve this. The emission in these materials is generally referred to as donor-acceptor charge transfer (CT) type emission. The spatial separation of the HOMO and LUMO in these donor-acceptor-type compounds generally results in a small ΔE S-T These states can be associated with CT states. In general, luminescent donor-acceptor materials are prepared by combining an electron donor unit, such as amino or carbazole derivatives, with an electron acceptor unit, such as nitrogen-containing six-membered aromatic rings. If adjacent substituents may optionally be linked to form a ring, the resulting ring may be monocyclic or polycyclic, as well as alicyclic, heteroalicyclic, aromatic, or heteroaromatic. In this context, neighboring substituents can refer to substituents bonded to the same atom, to substituents bonded to carbon atoms that are directly bonded to each other, or to substituents bonded to carbon atoms that are further apart. Preferably, neighboring substituents refer to substituents bonded to the same carbon atom and to substituents bonded to carbon atoms that are directly bonded to each other.
[0050] The expression that neighboring substituents can be linked in such a way as to form a ring is also meant to mean that two substituents bonded to the same carbon atom can be linked together via a chemical bond in such a way as to form a ring, which can be exemplified by the following formula:
[0051] The expression that neighboring substituents can optionally be linked to form a ring is also meant to mean that two substituents bonded to directly adjacent carbon atoms are linked together via a chemical bond, forming a ring, which can be exemplified by the following formula:
[0052] Furthermore, the expression that adjacent substituents can optionally be linked to form a ring is also meant to imply that if one of the two substituents bonded to carbon atoms, which are directly bonded to each other, represents hydrogen, the second substituent is bonded at a position where the hydrogen atom is bonded, thus forming a ring. This is illustrated by the following formula:

[0131] Table 2 shows the device performance of the examples and the comparison examples. The data in Table 2 show that the emission wavelengths of Example 1 and Example 2, compared to those of Comparison Example 1 without substitution at a ligand L, aThe wavelengths are shifted 4-5 nm towards blue, and they provide more saturated green light. Furthermore, the EQE of the device in Example 1 and the EQE of the device in Example 2 reach 24.37% and 24.65%, respectively, both of which are higher than that of the comparison example 1 (23.39%) and are further improved compared to the EQE of comparison example 1, which is at a relatively high level in the industry. Additionally, the device voltages of both Example 1 and Example 2 are approximately 0.35 V lower than those of comparison example 1.
[0132] The spectrum of comparison example 3, which shows deuterated methyl substitutions in both Y2 and Y3 of ligand L aThe EQE of the comparative example 3 is similar to those of Example 1 and Example 2, but the EQE of the comparative example 3 is lower to varying degrees than that of Example 1 and Example 2, and the device stress of the comparative example 3 is higher than that of Example 1 and Example 2.
[0133] The comparative example 2 contains a fluorine substitution in Y1 of ligand L a Example 2 has a maximum emission wavelength that is shifted approximately 20 nm towards the red compared to Example 1 and Example 2, and a maximum wide wavelength (FWHM) that is 18.5 nm and 23.9 nm wider than those of Example 1 and Example 2, respectively, so that Example 2 emits unsaturated light. Additionally, the EQE of Example 2 is lower than that of Example 1 and Example 2, and the device voltage of Example 2 is slightly higher than those of Example 1 and Example 2.
[0134] The above results show that the metal complex of the present disclosure, which contains a ligand with the F substitution at a certain position, exhibits improved device performance, in particular reduced device stress, improved EQE and improved color saturation compared to a metal complex without substitution or with other alkyl substitutions at the same position of ligand L. a or with fluorine substitution at another position of the ligand L a has.
[0135] Both Example 3 and Example 4 show significant improvements compared to Comparative Examples 1 to 3, exhibiting a higher EQE and a lower driving voltage. The driving voltage of Example 3 is 0.5 V, 0.22 V, and 0.21 V lower than that of Comparative Examples 1 to 3. The EQE of Example 4, which uses the metal complex of the present disclosure, reaches 26.52%, i.e., it is approximately 13.4%, 15.2%, and 14.6% higher than that of Comparative Examples 1 to 3. Furthermore, the FWHM of Example 4 is very narrow (only 32.3 nm), which is a very high level in the industry.
[0136] The above results show that the metal complex of the present disclosure, which contains a ligand with the F substitution at a certain position, exhibits improved device performance, in particular improved color saturation, low FWHM, improved EQE and reduced device stress, compared with a metal complex with the fluorine substitution at a different position of the ligand.
