Abstract
Description
[0001] This espresso or coffee maker brews coffee directly in the capsule using a built-in heating element, and the coffee is poured directly from the capsule into the cup without any intermediate steps. Thus, the machine itself does not have a heating element.
[0002] There are numerous capsule machines that use capsules to prepare coffee or espresso. The capsules contain a small amount of coffee powder (approx. 5-6 grams). They also have a filter built in that filters the coffee as it flows through. During preparation, the capsule is pierced in several places and hot water flows in on one side while the coffee flows out the other. However, there are also capsules that already have the water-coffee mixture inside. The coffee first goes into a funnel and is then passed through a semi-tubular container to the cup. Unfortunately, these detours cool the coffee more or less, which is why the first coffee is usually slightly cooler than the next, for example if a second capsule is to be prepared immediately after.
[0003] DE 20 2010 017 756 U1 describes a device for preparing a beverage extracted from a capsule, comprising a capsule support and a capsule cage in which at least one water inlet and capsule piercing means are arranged, wherein a cage for receiving capsules therein is dimensioned such that it can deform each capsule formed from a material deformable upon contact with hot water, which is arranged in the cage, at least partially by means of deformation means provided on the inner surface of the cage, so that the capsule is held in the cage after its contact with the hot water.
[0004] The application WO 2011 / 138 368 A1 describes a brewing or preparation chamber of a beverage preparation device, which is suitable for receiving and extracting a portion capsule filled with powdered or liquid beverage base substances, which portion capsule consists entirely or partially of electrically conductive material, and the brewing or preparation chamber consists of a stationary first chamber part, which is provided with opening means for opening the portion capsule to the beverage outlet and is fluidically connected to a structure for the outflow of the beverage, and a second chamber part, which is horizontally or vertically movable relative to the first chamber part, which is fluidically connected to an extraction liquid pump for supplying the extraction liquid to the portion capsule and is provided with piercing means for opening the portion capsule and for introducing the extraction liquid into the portion capsule, wherein the brewing or preparation chamber is open to receive a portion capsule and closed to extract the portion capsule, wherein electrically conductive contacts, which are electrically insulated from one another and are the ends of an interrupted control circuit of a testing and control device, are arranged in the first chamber part or in the second chamber part or in the first chamber part and in the second chamber part.
[0005] The application WO 2014 / 147 256 A1 describes a capsule-based beverage production system with inductive liquid heating. The invention is directed to a beverage production system comprising: a capsule designed to hold at least one beverage ingredient, a beverage production machine designed to produce a beverage from the ingredients of the capsule by allowing a liquid to penetrate the capsule to interact with the ingredients in the capsule, wherein the beverage production machine comprises a bell-shaped enclosing element for enclosing the capsule. According to the invention, at least a portion of the outer surface of a wall of the capsule comprises at least one metallic and / or electrically conductive region, and the beverage production machine comprises means for generating and contactlessly coupling electrical heating power to the metallic and / or electrically conductive region of the capsule.
[0006] US Pat. No. 5,325,765 A discloses a filter cartridge in which the coffee grounds are contained in a filter bag within the cartridge. The outer shell of the cartridge is made of a water-impermeable material, while the filter bag is made of a water-permeable material. The filter bag has a downwardly tapered shape, forming a chamber in the lower area of the filter cartridge between the outer shell and the filter bag. To extract the coffee grounds, the cartridge is pierced on both sides by an upper and lower piercing device.
[0007] EP 1554958 B1 relates to coffee machines for brewing instant coffee packaged in capsules. Coffee machines of the type in question are predominantly used in households. Compared to conventional coffee machines equipped with a grinder for grinding coffee beans, a fundamental advantage of the coffee machines in question is that the use of capsules allows for brewing a high-quality coffee beverage, especially since the coffee powder has an optimal grinding degree and is packaged airtight in the capsules. Furthermore, the coffee machines are subject to relatively low contamination from coffee powder.
[0008] EP 2476633 B1 relates to a capsule, a system, and a method for preparing a beverage. Here, the stiffening region is arranged, in particular, rotationally symmetrically around the penetration region, wherein the stiffening region is protected as at least one recess formed in the base in the circumferential direction.
[0009] DE 27 52 733 A1 discloses a cartridge containing a substance for producing a beverage using a corresponding machine. This cartridge has a sealed housing with an acute-angled truncated cone shape and is typically made of aluminum sheet.
[0010] WO 2010 / 041179 A2 discloses a capsule for producing beverages such as coffee. The capsule can contain ground coffee and has a top surface with a weakened area incorporated into it.
[0011] EP 1 944 248 A1 discloses a plastic capsule containing a powder for the production of a beverage using a corresponding machine. A reinforced wall is incorporated into a central area of the base of the capsule to prevent the base from sagging immediately before penetration.
[0012] Such machines have complex components, such as the thermoblock, high-pressure pump, monitoring elements, control system, etc. One disadvantage of these machines is that the thermoblock, where the water is heated, requires more or less descaling depending on the limescale content of the water pipes. In addition, every time a coffee is prepared, coffee residue clings to the machine's components, which can lead to mold growth over time. The components that direct the coffee flow from the capsule to the cup are particularly vulnerable. Furthermore, the machines are relatively complex because they contain many elements that can be disrupted by limescale. The brewing unit in the machine is one of the most expensive components, after the high-pressure pump.
[0013] The invention is based on the object of creating a coffee machine which is relatively simply constructed and which draws the coffee almost directly from the coffee capsule into the coffee cup without any major detours.
[0014] This object is achieved by a device having the features listed in patent claims 1 to 28.
[0015] Advantages of the device are: - simple construction, - very light, so that it can also be designed as a portable device, - robust, - no mold-forming spots present, - no limescale formation, - easy to clean.
[0016] Embodiments of the invention are described with reference to Fig. 1 to 4. They show: Fig. 1 an embodiment of the invention with the integrated heating element in the coffee capsule, Fig. 2 a portable version, Fig. 3 another version with a heating element, in the form of an aluminum heating coil integrated into the capsule, Fig. 4 the capsule structure.
[0017] In contrast to the state of the art, the heating element is new here: it is built directly into the capsule. This makes the water heater in the machine completely superfluous; the coffee is brewed directly, and there is no need to descale the machine. The installation of a high-pressure pump in the machine is also no longer necessary, as heating the water directly in the capsule creates steam pressure that forces the capsule contents downward, through the built-in filter, into the capsule, and directly into the cup. The design of this device is extremely simplified, making it very attractive for portable versions. Especially when combined with the use of special cigarette-shaped capsules, a very small, portable version can be built. It can be made as small as a felt-tip pen, making it ideal for a quick espresso on the go, for example. The amount of water in an espresso is also relatively small (approx. 15 - 25ml water).
[0018] This capsule 2, which is filled with a substance that can be used to prepare tea, coffee, or espresso, is relatively simple in construction. The coffee capsule machine 1 shown here is also much simpler than conventional machines. This machine does not have a water pressure pump or water heater. While a water pressure pump can be installed here as well, this is not absolutely necessary. Its functionality is just as straightforward. The coffee capsule 2, which has a funnel-shaped tip 3, is placed in the capsule receptacle 4 with the tip facing downwards. The lid 5 is pressed down and closed. Due to the downward pressure, a cannula / injection needle 6 pierces the capsule 2 from above. The receptacle 4 has a small opening or channel 7 at the bottom, into which the funnel-shaped tip 3 of the coffee capsule 2 partially penetrates. The cold water 8 is injected into the coffee capsule 2, but does not yet flow into the coffee cup 9 below because the funnel tip of the capsule 2 is still closed. Opening this requires a slightly higher pressure in the capsule 2. The water for injection can be drawn in by gravity (higher positioning of the water container) or by self-suction through evacuated / vacuum coffee capsules. As soon as the capsule 2 is filled with water, a current is passed through two contact points 10 on the outside of the capsule 2, via two electrodes or contact pins 11 on the machine, and the heating element 12 integrated into the capsule 2 is heated instantly. The contents (coffee powder and water) 13 in the capsule 2 are heated, generating excess pressure in the capsule 2. Because the capsule 2 is located in the receiving container 4, it is protected and cannot easily expand or burst uncontrollably. This allows the capsule to withstand higher pressures than if it were outside the container. The current flows through the heating element 12 only briefly, heating it to approximately 100°-150°C. This is usually enough to heat approximately 25 ml of water-coffee mixture to over 100°C in a flash.
[0019] Heating the contents and creating pressure only takes a few seconds, depending on the design of the heating element 12. The excess pressure causes the tip 3 of the capsule 2 to break, perforate, or open at a predetermined breaking point. The coffee 14 then flows directly into the coffee cup 9 through the coffee capsule tip 3, which opens automatically due to excess pressure. During production, a channel closure 15 is incorporated into the capsule 2 at the capsule tip 3. This closure has a predetermined breaking point or a closing part that can only be opened by excess pressure inside the coffee capsule 2. It is important, however, that no parts are allowed to come loose from the tip or closure, as they would otherwise end up in the coffee cup 9. Such a closure can, for example, consist of a silicone disc 16 (or a cylindrical or spherical silicone body) with a tiny hole 17 in the center that can only be opened by excess pressure and otherwise remains closed. As soon as the capsule 2 is filled with water and the air has escaped from the inside through the puncture point 18, the puncture point 18 is sealed by pushing a sealing ring 19 along the cannula 6 and the capsule 2 is energized via the contact points 10. In order to always position the contact points of the capsule 2 on the spring-loaded contact pins / electrodes 11 of the coffee machine correctly in relation to one another, the capsule 2 can have a geometric shape that always guarantees this position. For example, an oval shape of the capsule 2, viewed from above, with two eyelets or contact pads 20, arranged diametrically, can serve as contact points for the capsule 2. However, it is even simpler to install the contact points in the form of concentric rings made of metal or metal foil (e.g. aluminum foil), which are installed on the outside of one of the circular surfaces of the coffee capsule 2.Thus, no matter how the capsule 2 is rotated around its longitudinal axis, these rings can always be touched by the permanently installed contact pins in the machine, establishing electrical contact with the heating element. For better water intake, the coffee capsule 2 can be empty of air, or more or less under vacuum. As soon as it is inserted, it automatically draws in the water. To prevent splashing, a small filter 21 is located in the channel tip 3, which slows the flow of coffee slightly, allowing the coffee to flow smoothly to the cup.
[0020] The coffee capsule 2 can be made of any material. It simply needs to be able to withstand short-term temperatures of at least 120°C. Therefore, it can also be made of wood or paper.
[0021] An example is shown on the Fig. 1. Once the coffee capsule has been inserted into the container of the machine 1, the lid 5, in which the injection needle 6 is located, is closed from above. Closing can be achieved by lowering the lid. As soon as the injection needle (the cannula) 6 has pierced the capsule 2 from above, approximately 15-25 ml of cold water is injected. The capsule 2 should also be dimensioned accordingly so that it can hold this amount of water. Because the water flows in through the relatively narrow injection needle 6, it creates a vortex inside the capsule 2 that mixes the coffee powder and the water relatively thoroughly. Immediately after the water is injected, the contact points 10 / 20 are energized and the heating element 12 in the capsule 2 will heat the water-coffee mixture in the capsule 2 instantly. This creates excess pressure in the capsule.Because the capsule 2 is located in the appropriately shaped receptacle 4, it cannot expand or burst. Instead, a predetermined breaking point (closure, e.g. crown-shaped closure) built into the bottom of the capsule 2 is opened and the coffee can flow directly into the cup. The capsule receptacle 4 gives the capsule 2 the necessary structural stability while the internal pressure increases. A filter 21 should be installed over the closure in the capsule, as with conventional coffee capsules, so that the coffee flows out well filtered. The closure can be a piece of predetermined breaking foil or a silicone body or a silicone disc with a very narrow opening that is kept closed solely by the elastic material structure and that only opens when there is excess pressure, allowing the water to flow out.Like the proven technology in portafilter espresso machines, this disc would also produce the espresso foam through vibrations as the coffee passes through.
[0022] The heating element 12 should be constructed as simply as possible. This can be a very simple aluminum spiral or coil positioned on the capsule wall 22 or centrally. The aluminum capsule wall 22 can serve as the heating element 12 if it is spirally cut and insulated, or if it has conductor strips arranged quite thinly along the insulated wall 22, so that the current can flow like a coil or in narrow conductor paths with high electrical resistance. The pressure is generated solely by the heat in the capsule 2, and the steam generated there displaces the water-coffee powder mixture from the capsule 2. This allows this coffee machine to be designed in a small format and portable. In this case, it would only need a battery 43 for power supply, making coffee possible at any time, for example, even outdoors. Fig. 2). Because no pump or water heater is required in the machine, the portable version can be as large as a thick felt-tip pen or a pack of cigarettes and would only need a small, refillable water tank 23 with, for example, a 25-50ml capacity, which would be sufficient for 1-2 espressos. For water injection into the coffee capsule 2, either the version with the vacuum in the capsule 2 or a simple injection device 24, which is constructed similarly to a medical syringe with a piston, can be used. You simply press the piston 25 in the syringe down, and the water lands in the capsule 2. With evacuated capsules 2, the syringe is superfluous, because the capsule 2 draws in the water on its own due to the vacuum. The power is then switched on, and the water heats up within seconds. The steam in the capsule 2 does the rest.An electronic control 26 is required to monitor the power supply and shut it off after a few seconds to prevent melt from emerging from the heating element 12. A temperature sensor 27 can also be installed in the receiving container 4, although this is not absolutely necessary.
[0023] The functionality of machine 1 allows for very fast coffee preparation. Both the stationary and portable versions can prepare an espresso, for example, in less than 10 seconds.
[0024] On the Fig. 2 shows another embodiment. The water-coffee mixture is heated by a heating element in the form of an aluminum heating coil 28, which is integrated into the capsule wall 22. In reality, the aluminum capsule wall 22 is spiral-shaped and integrated into another insulating wall 29. Another inner insulating wall 30 insulates the heating element 12 from the capsule contents (coffee and water). The inner insulating wall should be able to conduct the heat of the heating element 12 well and act as an electrical insulator. The heating element is powered by two electrodes or contact pins 11, which touch the capsule at contact points 10, which briefly conduct a current from the battery into the device into the capsule 2. The capsule contents are thereby heated instantly, excess pressure is created, and the coffee 14 flows from the capsule 2 directly into a coffee cup 9.Because the tip 3 of the capsule 2 is sealed with a silicone body in the channel that opens due to overpressure, the coffee flow is enriched with coffee foam due to micro-vibrations as it flows out.
[0025] It should be noted that the capsule 2 must withstand the heat of the internal heating element 12, and the capsule wall 22 must be made of a material that would not melt immediately at 150°C. Aluminum is ideal for this purpose. However, the associated coffee or espresso machine 1 can be equipped with a temperature monitor or current flow regulator to prevent overheating of the heating element 12 in the capsule 2. As a rule, heating the heating element 12 to 100-105°C would be perfectly sufficient.
[0026] The machine 1 can be equipped with an electronic temperature controller / regulator 31 and a temperature sensor 27, which switches off the power supply when a certain temperature is reached. Alternatively, the heating element 12 can be coupled to a "fuse point" 32 outside the capsule 2, which is interrupted after a few seconds by the current flow through the melting process. However, no electrical conductor or fuse should melt in the coffee. These can be installed outside the capsule 2. The capsule receptacle 4 is intended to prevent the capsule 2 from expanding; therefore, it should be sturdily constructed and made of a heat-resistant material. Ceramic, metal, or certain heat-resistant plastics are suitable for this purpose. Long and narrow / cigarette-shaped capsules 33 can be used very well as coffee capsules. A power line (e.g.made from parts or strips from the capsule wall) into the capsule 33, which is quickly heated by the electrical resistance. In this case, the contact points would be installed at each end of the cigarette-shaped capsule 33 or both at one end. Whether the capsule 33 is made of metal foil, wood, paper, bamboo, or heat-resistant plastic is up to the manufacturer. The capsule 33 itself does not have to be able to withstand very high pressures. A few bar are sufficient. However, it can withstand the significantly higher pressure when it is located in the capsule receiving container because there it is supported on almost all sides by the container walls. Generally speaking, pressures of 2-10 bar are perfectly sufficient because these values are generated directly in the capsule and not by an external pump, which would have to accept significant pressure losses through the lines. The 5 bar generated directly here is almost analogous to a pressure pump that works in the coffee machine, which generates 20 bar.
[0027] Because the capsule 33 has the heating element, you would think that it would be more harmful to the environment than conventional capsules, but this is not necessarily the case. The heating element consists of a metal coil, which can be part of the capsule wall, which is built in, or it can be integrated into the capsule wall. Integration into the capsule wall is an optimal solution, because it eliminates the need to install any extra metal parts. All that is required is a special "cut" in the conventional capsule wall, which converts the wall into narrower conductor tracks that can be heated by the flow of current. Nothing more is necessary. This does not make the capsule 33 heavier, nor does it make its construction more complicated. The narrow aluminum conductor tracks 34, which are "scratched" into the capsule wall, conduct the current directly from the contact points and heat up in the process. The conductor tracks 34 can, for example, be in strip form approx. They can be made 1mm or slightly wider, and with a length of 5-20cm, they offer enough electrical resistance to be heated up instantly. However, they should not be subjected to such high electricity that they melt or burn, but only so that they heat up to approximately 120°-250°C. A current flow controller regulates the precise current strength and voltage so that the desired temperatures are reached. The coffee water in the capsule 33 heats up within seconds, creating the necessary pressure to open the top of the capsule 33 and allow the coffee to flow directly into the cup. The filter at the bottom of the top prevents the coffee from escaping explosively and slows the flow rate somewhat, allowing it to land calmly and without splashing into the cup.
[0028] Another variant ( Fig. 3) doesn't even have a water injector for the capsule. Instead, capsules / liquid coffee capsules 35 already filled with water and coffee are used, in which the conductive paths or heating element are already built in. They are supplied with power externally through two (or more) contact points 10; the heating element 12 heats up, and the pressure in the capsule 35 increases. Immediately after reaching a certain pressure value, the channel 7 in the tip 3 of the liquid capsule 35 opens, and the coffee flows into the cup.
[0029] This espresso or coffee-making machine 1 is so simply constructed that it can easily be designed as a mobile, portable device with a battery 43. As such, it can be constructed in the shape of a somewhat thicker ballpoint pen or felt-tip pen that can accommodate a battery and is equipped with a capsule receptacle. The electronic control limits the current to precise values, thus protecting the user and the device from burns. The outer wall of the capsule receptacle 4 is designed to insulate the heat emanating from the capsule 35. This allows the container to be safely touched by hand. The outer wall can be constructed so that it only heats up slightly, even when several capsules 35 are used in succession and several coffees have been prepared.
[0030] The variant from the Fig.4 shows a design in which the coffee capsule already contains both the coffee powder 36 and the cold water 8 during production. This dual-chamber capsule 38 consists of two chambers: a water chamber 39 and a coffee powder chamber 40. The coffee powder 36 and the water 8 are separated from each other by a thin, break-proof film (separating film, aluminum foil) 41. The heating element 12 in the dual-chamber capsule is located in the water chamber 39, but can also be partially installed in the coffee powder chamber. As soon as the pressure in the water chamber 39 increases due to heating, the separating film (e.g. aluminum foil) 41 is torn and the hot water 37 flows into the coffee powder chamber 40. For optimal water flow, the water chamber 39 can be constructed in the shape of a hat and placed over the coffee powder chamber 40.As the water heats up, the pressure in the capsule 38 continues to rise, and finally, another sealing film 42 in the coffee powder chamber 40 will finally give way, allowing the coffee to flow downwards into the cup.
