Description

[0001] The invention relates to a tire system and a method for using such a tire system. A vehicle system comprising two or more such tire systems is also disclosed.

[0002] Ongoing technological development and increasing digitalization are particularly affecting the field of automotive engineering and vehicle tires. There is a continued interest in continuously collecting performance data from vehicle components in order to, for example, constantly monitor performance and operational safety. Information that can be monitored for vehicle tires includes, for example, tire pressure and acceleration.

[0003] In practice, however, the information collected by sensors arranged in vehicle tires must not only be recorded and evaluated, but this information must also be transmitted to receivers located outside the tire so that the collected information can be evaluated appropriately.

[0004] In current technology, radio communication methods are primarily used for data transmission from vehicle tires, typically relying on a relatively narrow selection of standard radio protocols. The sensor units employed are limited to these specific radio protocols by their integrated transmitters and receivers. This restricts the communication capabilities of the sensor units, as they cannot be addressed via alternative wireless data transmission methods.

[0005] In the case of conventional pneumatic tires, the fact that the electronic functional units integrated into the tire, such as sensors or identification chips, are usually used as separate components is a significant factor. This separate design of the electronic functional components considerably increases the time and cost required to manufacture such tires, as multiple components must be attached, necessitating several production steps.

[0006] The use of separate electronic functional components in corresponding tire systems also has the disadvantage that, if both have an active sensor and / or transmitter unit, they require a separate power supply.

[0007] Another problem with the separate integration of electronic functional components into the vehicle tire is that the electronic functional components can only rely on the transmission technology assigned to them by design for transmitting the respective signal.

[0008] The primary objective of the present invention was to eliminate or at least reduce the disadvantages of the prior art.

[0009] In particular, the object of the present invention was to provide an advantageous tire system which offers the functionality of two or more electronic functional units, but which can be manufactured in a more time- and cost-efficient manner.

[0010] A further objective of the present invention was to enable the tire system to offer greater flexibility in transmitting the information provided by the functional units using wireless transmission methods.

[0011] It was a supplementary objective of the present invention that the tire system to be specified should enable an easier energy supply to the electronic functional components used.

[0012] Furthermore, it was an object of the present invention that the tire system to be specified improves the possibilities for transmitting the relevant signal information for each electronic functional unit, whereby it was particularly desirable that additional redundancies be created in the tire system to be specified in order to be able to retrieve the signal information of functional units even when the wireless data transmission method actually assigned to the electronic functional unit is not accessible or less suitable for the intended transmission.

[0013] The inventors of the present invention have now found that the aforementioned problems can be solved by using an electronic functional component in a tire system, which comprises at least two electronic functional units, an electronic control device and a battery for power supply as integrated components, if this component is configured to transmit the signal information of the functional units in two different wireless data transmission methods, and if at least one of the wireless data transmission methods is operated as an active data transmission method, such that signal information is transmitted at predetermined intervals as defined in the claims.

[0014] In a corresponding tire system, the time and cost expenditure of applying the necessary electronic functional units and their energy supply during subsequent operation is advantageously simplified. In particular, the integrated design of the components in the electronic functional component also makes it possible, in preferred embodiments, to transmit the signal information of one of the functional units, if necessary, in the wireless data transmission method that is actually assigned to the other functional unit, in order to create increased flexibility with regard to the transmission technology used and thus additional redundancy, which makes it possible to read out the signal information assigned to the electronic functional unit even if the data transmission technology actually assigned to the electronic functional unit cannot be used, for example because no suitable reading device is available.

[0015] The aforementioned problems are thus solved by the subject matter of the invention as defined in the claims. Preferred embodiments of the invention are described in the dependent claims and the following descriptions.

[0016] Such embodiments, which are hereinafter referred to as preferred, are combined in particularly preferred embodiments with features of other embodiments referred to as preferred. Combinations of two or more of the embodiments referred to below as particularly preferred are therefore especially preferred. Also preferred are embodiments in which a feature of one embodiment, referred to as preferred to any extent, is combined with one or more further features of other embodiments, which are referred to as preferred to any extent. Features of preferred methods and vehicle systems result from the features of preferred tire systems.

[0017] The invention relates to a tire system comprising: i) a tire rim, ii) a vehicle pneumatic tire arranged on the tire rim, wherein the vehicle pneumatic tire and the tire rim form a tire interior, and iii) an electronic functional component located inside the tire, comprising as components integrated in the electronic functional component: a) a first electronic functional unit, b) a second electronic functional unit, c) an electronic control device, and d) a battery, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to transmit initial signal information of the first electronic functional unit in a first wireless data transmission procedure, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to send second signal information from the second electronic functional unit in a second wireless data transmission method different from the first wireless data transmission method, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to send signal information at intervals specified by the electronic control device, at least in a wireless data transmission method.

[0018] The term "tire system" refers to the arrangement of the vehicle's pneumatic tire on the tire rim and also includes the electronic functional component arranged inside the tire. It is particularly preferred that the tire system comprises all the desired tire electronics in the electronic functional component. A tire system according to the invention is preferred insofar as it comprises exactly one electronic functional component. A tire system according to the invention is also preferred, or alternatively, in which the electronic functional component further comprises: f) one or more further electronic functional units, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to transmit signal information from the other electronic functional units in a wireless data transmission method, preferably a further wireless data transmission method different from the first wireless data transmission method and / or the second wireless data transmission method.

[0019] Pneumatic tires are well known to those skilled in the field of tire technology, and the arrangement of pneumatic tires on tire rims is a common occurrence in everyday life. An exemplary tire system according to the invention is shown, wherein the pneumatic tire is a passenger car or truck tire.

[0020] The definition of the present invention concerning a tire system consisting of a pneumatic tire and a tire rim is advantageous because the electronic functional component can, in principle, be attached either to the pneumatic tire, in this case usually to the inner layer of the tire, or to the tire rim. The respective arrangements offer different advantages. Mounting the component on the tire rim allows the pneumatic tire to be changed while still maintaining the desired functionality via the electronic functional component. Furthermore, functional components on the rim are generally subject to lower mechanical stresses during operation. Conversely, mounting the electronic functional component on the pneumatic tire allows the tire rim of the tire system to be changed, if necessary, without having to modify the electronic functional component.According to the inventors, embodiments in which the electronic functional component is arranged on the tire side are particularly preferred in these configurations. Therefore, a tire system according to the invention is especially relevant in which the electronic functional component is arranged on the tire rim, or in which the electronic functional component is arranged on the vehicle tire, preferably on an inner layer of the vehicle tire.

[0021] According to the invention, the electronic functional component comprises several components, which are designed as integrated components of the electronic functional component. For those skilled in the art, the term "integrated" is clear in the sense of component integration and means that the components are integrated into a single component in such a way that the entire component can be handled, particularly during the manufacture of the tire systems according to the invention. In the vast majority of cases, the electronic functional component will comprise the integrated components, for example, within a housing, which can be designed, at least partially, as a closed housing.

[0022] The electronic functional component comprises at least two electronic functional units, namely the first electronic functional unit and the second electronic functional unit. The term "electronic functional unit" indicates that each is an electronic component intended to perform a specific function within the vehicle tire. According to the inventors, in addition to electronic functional units capable of transmitting an identification signal to identify the electronic functional component and thus indirectly the vehicle tire, various sensor units are of particular importance as functional units for use in vehicle tires. These sensor units have one or more sensors and serve to determine operating parameters or influencing factors during the operation of the vehicle tire, such as temperature, tire pressure, or acceleration. Furthermore, a wide range of possible sensors are conceivable, which can be integrated into one or both of the electronic functional units. A preferred tire system according to the invention comprises the first electronic functional component and / or the second electronic functional component, preferably the first electronic functional component, a storage unit with identification information stored on the storage unit, preferably identification information for identifying the electronic functional component and / or the tire system, wherein the signal information assigned to the electronic functional component includes the identification information.

[0023] A tire system according to the invention is preferred, either additionally or alternatively, wherein the first electronic functional component and / or the second electronic functional component, preferably the second electronic functional component, comprises one or more sensor units for detecting at least one sensor value, wherein the signal information assigned to the electronic functional component includes the sensor value. A tire system according to the invention is particularly preferred, wherein the one or more sensor units are selected from the group consisting of pressure sensors, temperature sensors, acceleration sensors, deformation sensors, vibration sensors, and optical sensors; preferably selected from the group consisting of pressure sensors, temperature sensors, and acceleration sensors; particularly preferably selected from the group consisting of pressure sensors.

[0024] In particularly preferred embodiments, at least one electronic functional unit comprises identification information, for example a unique ID (at least within the system under consideration, for example a tire batch), which the functional unit can transmit as signal information, and at least one functional unit comprises sensor functionality, in particular for transmitting the tire pressure prevailing inside the tire.

[0025] In addition to the first and second electronic functional units, i.e., the units which provide the desired functionality in the tire system, the electronic functional component also includes an electronic control device which serves to control the electronic functional component and which is designed to implement the corresponding setting of the electronic functional component.

[0026] Finally, the electronic functional component includes a battery for supplying it with electrical energy. The battery can, in principle, be a primary battery or a secondary battery, i.e., a rechargeable battery. However, in practice, it is generally preferred to use primary batteries, as recharging such batteries is often not very economical. To ensure a long service life for the electronic functional component, especially if it contains energy-intensive functional units, it is preferable to make the battery replaceable, so that a depleted battery does not require replacing the entire electronic functional component. A tire system according to the invention is preferred, wherein the battery is a button cell.A tire system according to the invention is preferred additionally or alternatively, wherein the battery is arranged in the electronic functional component in a reversible and non-destructively replaceable manner.

[0027] The electronic functional component to be used according to the invention is configured to transmit the signal information assigned to the respective functional units using wireless data transmission methods. The term "signal information" encompasses the signal used to transmit precisely that information which is required or desired by the electronic functional unit. The signal information of an identification unit can thus, for example, consist of a unique ID, whereas the signal information of an electronic functional unit consisting of a pressure sensor is, for example, the tire pressure.

[0028] The basic configuration of the electronic functional component provides that it can transmit the signal information of the first electronic functional unit in a first wireless data transmission method, while it can transmit the signal information of the second functional unit in a second electronic data transmission method, wherein the first and the second wireless data transmission methods differ from one another. This difference in the choice of wireless data transmission method is essential for the present invention.

[0029] According to the inventors, both wireless data transmission methods will most likely be radio methods. Radio methods are generally known to those skilled in the art. The differences between various radio methods, which result in their different transmission characteristics, lie not only in the frequency used for data transmission but also, in particular, in other operating parameters, which are manifested in the so-called radio protocol. The radio protocol can be understood as a set of rules that determine the syntax, semantics, and synchronization of the communication, with the implementation of the radio protocol being carried out by hardware and / or software. For the vast majority of cases, a tire system according to the invention is relevant, wherein the first wireless data transmission method and / or the second wireless data transmission method, preferably the first wireless data transmission method and the second wireless data transmission method, are selected from the group consisting of radio methods. An exemplary tire system according to the invention is one in which the first wireless data transmission method and the second wireless data transmission method differ with respect to the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation and / or the radio protocol used.

[0030] A key feature of the tire system according to the invention is that the electronic functional component does not merely contain passive components, but also actively transmits signal information using at least one wireless data transmission method, thereby ensuring, in particular, long-range communication capability. Within the scope of the present invention, this is defined by the fact that the electronic functional component is configured to send signal information at predetermined intervals using at least one of the wireless data transmission methods, i.e., without the need for external excitation. This predetermination is provided by the electronic control device of the electronic functional component and can be achieved, for example, by suitable programming of the electronic control device.

[0031] A particular advantage of the integration of the components into the electronic functional component according to the invention is that the signal information assigned to the first or second electronic functional unit can not only be transmitted in the first or second wireless data transmission method, but that, in addition, the wireless data transmission method that is actually assigned to the other functional unit can be used for the transmission of the corresponding signal information of one electronic functional unit. This advantageously makes it possible, if required, to transmit signal information from a functional unit via an alternative wireless data transmission method, for example, if signal information that is normally only provided via a short-range data transmission method can also be transmitted via a long-range data transmission method, such as satellite, if necessary. A tire system according to the invention is preferred, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to send signal information from the second electronic functional unit in the first wireless data transmission method and / or to send signal information from the first electronic functional unit in the second wireless data transmission method.

[0032] Even if at least one of the wireless data transmission methods is an active data transmission method, in which signal information is sent at predetermined intervals, one of the electronic functional units can be formed by a passive electronic functional unit, with the design as an RFID unit being particularly advantageous. RFID units are generally known to those skilled in the art and are used for identification in many applications. The transmission of signal information, especially a unique ID, in passive RFID systems only occurs when a suitable reader is used, which supplies the RFID unit with energy via the emitted electromagnetic radiation. The integration of the component into the electronic functional component, which also includes a battery, advantageously also makes it possible to implement the RFID unit as an active component.A preferred tire system according to the invention is therefore one in which the first electronic functional unit is a passive electronic functional unit and the electronic functional component is configured to send signal information at intervals specified by the electronic control device in the second wireless data transmission method. In this case, it is a tire system according to the invention in which the electronic functional component is configured to send the first signal information as a result of excitation by electromagnetic radiation. A preferred tire system according to the invention is one in which the first electronic functional unit is an RFID unit.

[0033] A promising alternative to using a passive electronic functional unit is to design the electronic functional component to transmit signal information using at least two active wireless data transmission methods. A tire system according to the invention is preferred for this purpose, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to send signal information in the first wireless data transmission method and in the second wireless data transmission method at intervals specified by the electronic control device, wherein the signal transmission preferably predominates, and particularly preferably occurs substantially entirely, at different times.

[0034] According to the inventors, particularly preferred embodiments, which allow for particularly flexible retrieval of the desired signal information from the electronic functional units, are achieved by combining short-range data transmission, i.e., a data transmission method whose signal transmission capability is exhausted under normal circumstances after 1,000 m or less, preferably 500 m or less, with a long-range wireless data transmission method, the latter typically relying on the use of radio masts or satellites. A tire system according to the invention is preferred, wherein at least one of the wireless data transmission methods, preferably the second wireless data transmission method, is a wireless data transmission method in which the corresponding signal information is transmitted via a radio mast and / or a satellite, preferably a satellite.A tire system according to the invention is preferred, either additionally or alternatively, wherein at least one of the wireless data transmission methods, preferably the first wireless data transmission method, is a wireless data transmission method for short-range data transmission, in which the corresponding signal information is not transmitted via a radio mast and / or a satellite.

[0035] The inventors have succeeded in identifying particularly suitable data transmission methods for the first and second wireless data transmission methods, with which excellent results can be achieved, especially when used in tire systems. A preferred tire system according to the invention is one in which the first wireless data transmission method is selected from the group consisting of RFID, Bluetooth, 3G, 4G, 5G, LoRaWAN (“Long Range Wide Area Network”), Sigfox, Zigbee, Mioty, WLAN, DOS (“Data over Satellite”), and NB-IoT (“NarrowBand IoT”). A preferred method is selected from the group consisting of RFID, Bluetooth, 4G, 5G, Sigfox, and Zigbee. A particularly preferred method is selected from the group consisting of RFID, Bluetooth, and Sigfox.A tire system according to the invention is preferred, either additionally or alternatively, wherein the second wireless data transmission method is selected from the group consisting of RFID methods, Bluetooth methods, 3G methods, 4G methods, 5G methods, LoRaWAN methods (“Long Range Wide Area Network”), Sigfox methods, Zigbee methods, Mioty methods, WLAN methods, DOS methods (“Data over Satellite”) and NB-IoT methods (“NarrowBand IoT”), preferably selected from the group consisting of RFID methods, Bluetooth methods, 4G methods, 5G methods, Sigfox methods, and Zigbee methods, and particularly preferably selected from the group consisting of RFID methods, Bluetooth methods, and Sigfox methods.

[0036] In particularly preferred embodiments, each of the aforementioned wireless data transmission methods is combined in the electronic functional component with the other methods in the list, preferably the preferred list, and especially preferably the particularly preferred list. Particularly preferred is the combination of RFID methods with Bluetooth methods and Sigfox methods, as well as the combination of a Bluetooth method with a Sigfox method.

[0037] Particularly preferred in the overall view of the preceding disclosure is a tire system according to the invention, wherein the first wireless data transmission method is an RFID method and wherein the second wireless data transmission method is selected from the group consisting of RFID method, Bluetooth method, 3G method, 4G method, 5G method, LoRaWAN method (“Long Range Wide Area Network”), Sigfox method, Zigbee method, Mioty method, WLAN method, DOS method (“Data over Satellite”) and NB-IoT method (“NarrowBand IoT”).

[0038] The preceding definition of the invention emphasizes the ability of the electronic functional component to transmit the signal information provided by the electronic functional units to a receiver located outside the tire system by sending a signal. However, in many cases, the inventors believe it will also be advantageous to configure the electronic functional component to receive signals using one or both of the wireless transmission methods, for example, to wirelessly adjust the sensors installed in the electronic functional units or to transmit new commands to the electronic control unit.A preferred option is a tire system according to the invention, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to receive signal information for use in the corresponding electronic functional unit and / or the electronic control device in at least one of the wireless data transmission methods, preferably at least in the second wireless data transmission method.

[0039] From the perspective of optimized cost-efficiency and maximum material savings, it is preferred if the electronic functional component comprises only one antenna, which can be used for communication in both wireless data transmission methods. Accordingly, a tire system according to the invention is preferred, wherein the electronic functional component comprises exactly one antenna, and wherein the electronic functional component is configured to transmit in the first wireless data transmission method and in the second wireless data transmission method using the same antenna.

[0040] As an alternative to the embodiment described above, the inventors propose that multiple antennas can be provided. This allows for greater differences in the design of the wireless data transmission methods, for example, with regard to frequency ranges, and enables transmission quality optimized for the respective wireless data transmission method. Furthermore, when using two antennas, it is easier to continue transmitting signal information via the other wireless data transmission method and the second antenna if one of the antennas fails or is damaged, preferably also signal information from the other electronic functional unit, in order to maintain the operational capability of the electronic functional component.A preferred tire system according to the invention is wherein the electronic functional component comprises two or more antennas, preferably at least one antenna for each electronic functional unit, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to transmit using different antennas in the first wireless data transmission method and in the second wireless data transmission method.

[0041] As explained above, an advantage of the electronic functional component to be used according to the invention lies in the fact that, through the integration of at least two electronic functional units, each with an associated wireless data transmission method, it becomes possible to transmit the signal information of one electronic functional unit to the other using the wireless data transmission method. In accordance with the skilled person's understanding, this functionality can be achieved by a signal-conducting connection between the first and second electronic functional units, and this signal-conducting connection can advantageously also be established via the electronic control device. As an alternative to such a signal-conducting connection, the inventors consider it advantageous if the electronic functional component is designed such that the second functional unit and / or the electronic control device can retrieve the signal information of the first functional unit using a wireless data transmission method, preferably with a very short range, i.e., through wireless communication within the electronic functional component. In this case, the system is a tire system according to the invention, wherein the electronic functional component is configured to send signal information from the first electronic functional unit to the second electronic functional unit using the first wireless data transmission method and to send the signal information from the first electronic functional unit to the second electronic functional unit using the second wireless data transmission method.

[0042] The invention also relates to a method for using a tire system according to the invention, comprising the following method steps: x) Sending an initial signal information from the first electronic functional unit in the first wireless data transmission method and receiving the initial signal information with a first receiving unit, and y) Sending a second signal information from the second electronic functional unit in the second wireless data transmission method and receiving the second signal information with a second receiving unit, wherein at least one of the process steps x) or y) is repeated at intervals specified by the electronic control device.

[0043] A preferred method according to the invention is one in which the first signal information of the first electronic functional unit is transmitted in the first wireless data transmission method as a result of excitation by electromagnetic radiation, wherein the electromagnetic radiation is preferably emitted by an evaluation device arranged outside the tire system. A preferred method according to the invention is additionally or alternatively one in which the first receiving unit is an evaluation device arranged outside the tire system or a transmitting and receiving unit arranged in a vehicle, preferably an evaluation device arranged outside the tire system.

[0044] A preferred method according to the invention is one in which the second signal information of the second electronic functional unit is transmitted in the second wireless data transmission method at intervals predetermined by the electronic control device. A preferred method according to the invention is additionally or alternatively one in which the second receiving unit is a radio mast and / or a satellite.

[0045] Finally, a vehicle system comprising a vehicle and two or more tire systems according to the invention arranged on the vehicle is also disclosed.

[0046] A preferred vehicle system is one according to the invention, wherein the vehicle system comprises four or more tire systems according to the invention.

[0047] Preferably, or alternatively, a vehicle system according to the invention is included, wherein the vehicle system comprises a central transmitting and receiving unit, wherein the transmitting and receiving unit is configured to communicate with the electronic functional component in the first wireless data transmission method and / or in the second wireless data transmission method.

[0048] The invention and preferred embodiments of the invention are explained and described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying figures. These figures show: Fig. 1 A schematic representation of a tire system according to the invention and an enlargement of the electronic functional component in a preferred embodiment.

[0049] Fig. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a tire system 10 according to the invention, in which a vehicle pneumatic tire 14 is mounted on a tire rim 12, so that a tire interior 16 is formed inside in the usual manner. The electronic functional component 18 is arranged inside the tire interior 16, wherein in the example shown the Fig. 1 is located below the tread on the inner layer of the tire. The electronic functional component 18 comprises, as integrated components in a single component surrounded by a housing, the first electronic functional unit 20, the second electronic functional unit 22, the electronic control device 24 and the battery 26, as indicated in the schematic enlargement of the electronic functional component 18.

[0050] In the example shown, the battery 26 is designed as a button cell and is arranged in the electronic functional component 18 in a reversible and non-destructive manner. In the example shown, the electronic control unit 24 is connected to the first electronic functional unit 20 and the second electronic functional unit 22 via signal conductors and is supplied with electrical energy by the battery 26.

[0051] In the example shown, the first electronic functional unit 20 is a passive RFID unit for short-range communication using an RFID method, employing the first antenna 28. The first signal information assigned to the first electronic functional unit 20 includes a tire manufacturer-specific, unique ID for identifying the electronic functional unit and thus indirectly also the electronic functional component 18 and the tire system 10m, for example within a fleet management system.

[0052] In the example shown, the Fig. 1 The second electronic functional unit 22 is a sensor unit, which in particular includes a pressure sensor and is configured to determine the tire pressure prevailing in the tire interior 16. The second electronic functional unit 22 is connected to a second antenna 30, via which the second signal information can be transmitted using a longer-range transmission method.

[0053] The electronic functional component 18 of the Fig. 1 is designed, via the corresponding software configuration of the electronic control unit 24, to transmit the signal information of the first electronic functional unit 20, i.e., the identification information resulting from a trigger condition, in particular activation by an RFID evaluation device, using an RFID method. Furthermore, the electronic functional component 18 is configured to transmit the tire pressure determined by the second electronic functional unit 22 using the second antenna 30 via a 5G method, whereby the transmission can preferably take place directly to a data cloud or another central storage unit, the central storage unit preferably being part of a fleet management system. The electronic functional component 18 of the Fig.1 is designed to transmit the relevant signal information of the second electronic functional unit 22 to the receiver located outside the tire system 10 at predetermined intervals via the 5G method.

[0054] The preferred tire system 10 is designed with respect to the electronic functional component 18 such that the signal information of the first electronic functional unit 20 can also be transmitted via the second wireless data transmission method upon request. This advantageously enables an operator of a fleet management system to verify the identity of a tire system 10 for which they receive pressure data via the second electronic functional unit 22. Furthermore, the electronic functional component 18 is also designed to transmit the tire pressure determined by the second electronic functional unit 22 via the first wireless communication method, i.e., via RFID, when required. This makes it advantageously possible to not only read the ID of the vehicle tire with a suitable reading device in the immediate vicinity of the tire system 10, but also to retrieve the current tire pressure in a wireless communication method, without having to establish a connection to a cloud storage unit or other parts of the fleet management system.
