Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a battery module for a traction battery of an electrically or partially electrically powered motor vehicle.
[0002] In electrically or partially electric vehicles, numerous battery cells, such as lithium-ion cells, are connected to form a traction battery, also known as a high-voltage battery. Such a traction battery typically consists of several hundred, sometimes up to several thousand, battery cells. The battery cells of the traction battery are usually connected to form battery modules, or subgroups. However, a traction battery can also consist of a single battery module. The battery cells are generally stacked in a single direction, forming a cell stack, which is then inserted into a battery module housing. The cell stack is typically part of a cell stack assembly, which includes a cell carrier located at one end of the cell stack. The cell stack is typically inserted into a receiving space of a battery module housing through an open side of the casing. For optimal performance during operation, the battery cells, and especially pouch cells (also known as coffee-bag cells), require a specific surface pressure. Therefore, the battery cells must be compressed or even over-pressed during insertion. However, it is essential to reliably prevent damage to the battery cells during this process.
[0003] To ensure cell stability and / or prevent thermal runaway from one cell in the cell stack from spreading to other cells, flame retardants are often introduced into the space between the cell carrier and the cell stack. These materials are typically solids, such as foams. Since the geometries of the space between the cell carrier and the cell stack are usually complex and may contain undercuts, the flame retardant is generally introduced in liquid form and then cured.
[0004] A potential problem during the introduction of the flame retardant is the presence of leaks or gaps from which the liquid can escape during filling. This can negatively affect the cell stack arrangement. For example, the escape of liquid can result in the area between the cell support and the cell stack not being adequately filled with the flame retardant. Furthermore, the escape of the substance may necessitate rework on one side of the cell stack arrangement, for example, to remove hardened material that would otherwise obstruct the insertion of the cell stack arrangement.
[0005] DE 10 2023 125 105 B3 discloses a battery system for a motor vehicle with at least partial electric propulsion, comprising at least one battery housing with a housing base body for providing a housing space for receiving at least one cell stack arrangement with a cell stack of battery cells arranged side by side and at least one cell carrier arranged on the cell stack. The housing base body includes at least one housing side that is at least partially open, through which the cell stack arrangement can be inserted into the housing space. The battery system includes at least one flexible insertion aid that can be supported and, in particular, attached to the cell carrier. The insertion aid prevents direct friction between the cell stack and the housing base body when the cell stack is inserted. The insertion aid may have a slot arrangement.Such a slot arrangement can create a through-opening leading into a space between the cell stack and the cell support. This is disadvantageous if this space is to be filled with a flame-retardant substance that is in liquid form during filling.
[0006] The object of the present invention is to provide an improved battery module in this respect.
[0007] This problem is solved by the subject matter of claim 1. The dependent claims relate to advantageous further developments.
[0008] The battery module according to the invention is a battery module for a traction battery of an electrically or partially electrically powered motor vehicle. Preferably, the traction battery is a high-voltage battery. It is quite conceivable that the traction battery comprises only a single battery module, insofar as the traction battery is formed by a single battery module. It is provided that the battery module has a battery module housing, wherein the battery module housing defines a receiving space, wherein the battery module has a cell stack arrangement, wherein the cell stack arrangement is received in the receiving space, wherein the cell stack arrangement comprises a cell stack with several battery cells stacked side by side in a stacking direction, and wherein the cell stack arrangement has a cell carrier arranged on an end face of the cell stack.wherein a gap is formed between the end face and the cell carrier, wherein the gap is filled with a flame-retardant material, wherein the cell stack arrangement has an insertion aid, wherein the insertion aid is plate-shaped and flexible, wherein the insertion aid at least partially covers an outside of the cell stack to prevent direct contact between the outside of the cell stack and an inside of the battery module housing, wherein the insertion aid has an end section, wherein the end section extends beyond the cell stack and the gap, wherein the end section has a slot arrangement to form a connection section and a cell carrier cover section, wherein the cell carrier cover section at least partially covers an outside of the cell carrier to prevent direct contact between the outside of the cell carrier and an inside of the battery module housing, wherein the connecting section is bent inwards relative to the cell carrier cover section and is supported, in particular held, in the cell carrier, wherein a through-opening of the end section adjacent to the space, which is caused by the slot arrangement and the bending of the connecting section, is closed by a cover strip bonded to the end section.
[0009] The inclusion of a cover strip is advantageous because the flame-retardant material is typically introduced into the gap in liquid form and subsequently hardens or solidifies, then fills the gap in solid form, for example, as a foam. Covering the opening(s) created by the slot arrangement or the bending of the application section prevents or at least reduces unwanted leakage of the material during filling. This ensures that the gap is completely filled.
[0010] The end section is designed in such a way that, in the event of a thermal event, for example a thermal runaway of one of the battery cells, the module housing, which is often made of light metal, is protected against particle bombardment and fire penetration by the end section.
[0011] It is considered particularly advantageous if the strip is designed as a self-adhesive cover strip, provided that the cover strip itself has an adhesive layer, especially if the adhesive layer is localized and not applied over the entire surface that comes into contact with the end section. A localized adhesive layer allows the cover strip to be bonded only to certain areas of the end section, while other areas of the end section, although covered by the cover strip, remain unbonded. This is particularly advantageous when the connecting section is bent inwards and therefore no longer lies in the same plane as the rest of the end section. If the cover strip were, for example, bonded to both the connecting section and the cell carrier cover section, the flat design of the cover strip and the holding forces of the adhesive could cause the connecting section to be bent back towards the plane of the cell carrier cover section. This is particularly problematic if the cover strip is attached to the insertion aid before the insertion aid is mounted on the cell carrier, as it makes the correct alignment of the connecting section within the cell carrier and the cell carrier cover section on the outside of the cell carrier more difficult.
[0012] It is considered particularly advantageous if the flame-retardant material is a liquid applied to the gap and then hardened. Specifically, the flame-retardant material is a casting. The hardening process can, for example, involve cross-linking. It is quite conceivable that the material expands during hardening.
[0013] The flame-retardant material is preferably a solid, for example, a foam. It is quite conceivable that the solid is elastically deformable. The flame-retardant material is, in particular, a silicone foam. The flame-retardant material can, in particular, be a polyurethane (PUR), preferably a PUR foam.
[0014] It is considered particularly advantageous if the flame-retardant material is also electrically insulating. This is especially beneficial when the contact tabs of the battery cells extend through the gap towards the cell carrier. The electrically insulating properties of the flame-retardant material then insulate these contact tabs of the different battery cells from each other within the gap.
[0015] The cell carrier serves primarily to simplify the interconnection of the battery cells. For example, the cell carrier can have a contact carrier plate, which has several support ribs and, adjacent to each support rib, a first through-slot and a second through-slot. These slots allow the contact tabs of the battery cells to pass through, enabling their connection. The ends of the contact tabs from adjacent battery cells in the cell stack can be bent towards the same support rib, so that they overlap on the side of the support rib facing away from the cell stack. In the area of their overlap, the contact tabs can then be connected, for example by welding and / or soldering, to create an electrical connection.
[0016] It is considered particularly advantageous if the insertion aid is shear-resistant. In particular, the insertion aid is made of a shear-resistant (and simultaneously flexible) material. Specifically, the insertion aid can deflect at least in its longitudinal direction. The insertion aid can be flexible. In particular, the insertion aid can adapt to any excess dimensions that the cell stack has relative to the battery module housing before insertion. Specifically, the insertion aid can adapt to reduced dimensions of the cell stack if the cell stack is compressed during insertion.
[0017] It is advantageous and preferred that the insertion aid be positively engaged or supported on the cell carrier. In particular, this allows the insertion aid to absorb (shear) forces. Specifically, it allows the insertion aid to absorb (shear) forces that occur when the cell stack assembly is inserted into the battery module housing by pressing on the cell carrier. Other suitable methods of attaching the insertion aid to the cell carrier are also possible, which are particularly suitable for absorbing shear forces.
[0018] It is considered particularly advantageous if the cell stack arrangement is inserted into the battery module housing in a direction perpendicular to the stacking direction.
[0019] The battery module housing is in particular an extrusion profile, for example a pressed profile.
[0020] Following the insertion of the cell stack assembly, the battery module housing's insertion opening can be closed with a top plate. This top plate may also include other functional components, such as connections for cooling and / or electrical connections for sensors or similar devices.
[0021] It is considered particularly advantageous if the end section has two opposing outer edges, wherein the slot arrangement has a first slot extending in a curved or angled manner from the first outer edge and a second slot extending in a curved or angled manner from the second outer edge, such that the connecting section has a first sub-section and a second sub-section and the cell carrier cover section has a web extending between the first sub-section and the second sub-section via which the cell carrier cover section is connected to the rest of the insertion aid.Such a design has proven particularly advantageous with regard to supporting the connecting section on the cell carrier during the process of inserting the cell stack arrangement, as this allows for particularly good positional stability of the connecting section in the cell carrier and, in particular, avoids tilting moments.
[0022] Preferably, the cover strip is glued to the first subsection and the second subsection.
[0023] Preferably, the first slot and the second slot are arranged such that the cell carrier cover section is essentially T-shaped.
[0024] It is considered advantageous if the cover strip extends from the first section across the web to the second section, without any adhesion between the web and the cover strip.
[0025] Preferably, the distance of the cover strip from the first outer edge differs from the distance of the cover strip from the second outer edge. Particularly when the cell stack arrangement is assembled only after the cover strip has been applied, these different distances are advantageous because they allow for a particularly simple differentiation between the first and second outer edges. This simplifies the correct alignment of the insertion aid with the cell stack and makes it easy to verify during subsequent quality control whether the insertion aid is correctly aligned with the cell stack.
[0026] It is considered advantageous if one or more slots of the slot arrangement have an internal slot end, wherein the internal slot end is rounded. In this context, an internal slot end is understood to be a slot end that terminates within the surface of the insertion aid and thus does not penetrate an outer edge of the insertion aid. The rounding prevents unwanted tearing. The rounding can, for example, be a rounded recess that has a greater extent than the adjacent slot width.
[0027] It is considered advantageous if the cover strip is attached to the inner side of the end section facing the gap. This design is advantageous because it achieves a particularly good and stable seal of the opening. Furthermore, this design is advantageous because, with this arrangement, the adhesive bond is subjected to less stress when the gap is filled than if it were attached to the outer side of the end section, away from the inner side. This is because, during filling and, if applicable, curing, the adhesive bond is not subjected to tensile or shear stress, or only to a minimal degree. With an outer surface, however, the tensile and / or shear forces are expected to be greater than with an inner surface. Consequently, an inner surface adhesive bond can be less strong than an outer surface bond.Furthermore, mounting it on the inside is advantageous in that the width of the cell stack arrangement does not increase. Additionally, mounting it on the inside is advantageous in that the cover strip cannot be sheared off when the cell stack arrangement is inserted into the battery module housing.
[0028] However, it is also conceivable that the cover strip is attached to an outer side of the end section facing away from the gap.
[0029] It is considered particularly advantageous if the cover strip is bonded to the connecting section and not to the cell carrier cover section. Since the connecting section is bent inwards relative to the cell carrier cover section, bonding the cover strip to both would require it to be curved multiple times, resulting in considerable manufacturing effort. Conversely, it is considered advantageous, especially for cost-effective manufacturing, for the cover strip to be designed as a flexible strip. Bonding such a cover strip to both the cell carrier cover section and the connecting section would be difficult and could lead to localized swelling of the cover strip, which in turn could result in poor adhesion and / or leaks.
[0030] Preferably, the insertion aid is formed in one piece. In this respect, the cell carrier cover section and the connection section form integral components of the same body.
[0031] It is considered particularly advantageous if the insertion aid is suitable and designed to protect the battery module housing, at least temporarily, from burnout in the event of thermal runaway of at least one of the battery cells.
[0032] Preferably, the insertion aid is designed such that it provides electrical insulation between the cell stack and the battery module housing.
[0033] Preferably, the insertion aid is a single piece and designed separately from the cell carrier, the cell stack, and the battery module housing.
[0034] It is considered advantageous if the insertion aid has a lower frictional property and, in particular, a lower coefficient of friction than the cell stack.
[0035] In a preferred embodiment, the battery module is provided to have at least two insertion aids, wherein the at least two insertion aids are arranged on opposite outer sides of the cell stack.
[0036] Preferably, the material of the insertion aid is a fiber-reinforced plastic, in particular a glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP).
[0037] Preferably, the cell carrier has a receiving groove into which the connecting section is inserted. This enables reliable and, at the same time, structurally simple support and attachment of the insertion aid to the cell carrier. In particular, the connecting section is positively engaged in the receiving groove in the insertion direction. It is possible and advantageous that the attachment of the insertion aid to the cell carrier is achieved solely through the interaction of the connecting section and the receiving groove. In particular, the connecting section is simply inserted into the receiving groove. The connecting section can additionally be secured in the receiving groove by friction and / or by a material bond. Alternatively or additionally to the connecting section, the insertion aid can be positively engaged, frictionally engaged, and / or materially bonded to the cell carrier within and / or outside the receiving groove.
[0038] Preferably, the cover strip is designed such that it extends into the receiving groove. This provides additional support for the cover strip through the receiving groove. Furthermore, this can prevent or at least reduce leakage in the area of the receiving groove.
[0039] It is considered advantageous if the material of the insertion aid is translucent or transparent, wherein the cover strip has a bottom surface facing the insertion aid and a top surface opposite the bottom surface, the bottom surface being designed to be visually distinct from the top surface. In particular, if the insertion aid is mounted only after the cover strip has been adhered to it, the differences between the bottom surface and the top surface are advantageous in that an inner surface facing the cell stack and an outer surface facing away from the cell stack can be easily distinguished from one another in a particularly simple manner.
[0040] Preferably, the cover strip is an adhesive strip or the cover strip has an adhesive strip.
[0041] Preferably, the cover strip has a carrier layer whose underside is provided with an adhesive layer. This adhesive layer is locally covered with a lamination, preventing the cover strip from adhering to the end section in the area of the lamination. The design of the lamination allows for easy adjustment or achievement of partial adhesion of the cover strip to the end section. The lamination can also be used to visually differentiate the underside of the cover strip from the top side. For example, the lamination can be a different color than the top side of the cover strip. Particularly in the case of a transparent or translucent design of the insertion aid, the lamination can also serve as a reference for the correct positioning of the cover strip or as a visual reference for checking the positioning of the cover strip.
[0042] The carrier layer with the adhesive layer can, for example, be an adhesive strip.
[0043] The following figures explain the invention in more detail with reference to exemplary embodiments, without being limited to these. They show: Fig. 1. A battery module in a perspective view, Fig. 2 a cell stack arrangement of the battery module in a perspective view, Fig. 3 a sub-area of the battery module according to Fig. 2 in a perspective view, Fig. 4 the sub-area of the battery module according to Fig. 3 in another perspective view, Fig. 5 the sub-area of the battery module according to Fig. 3 before the introduction of a flame-retardant substance, Fig. 6. An insertion aid for the cell stack arrangement before its assembly, Fig. 7 a cover strip in a side view in a schematic representation.
[0044] In the figures, a vertical direction is indicated by an arrow Z, a transverse direction is indicated by an arrow Y, and a longitudinal direction is indicated by an arrow X.
[0045] The Fig. Figure 1 shows a battery module 10 for a traction battery of an electrically or partially electrically powered motor vehicle. The battery module 10 has a battery module housing 20 designed as an extruded profile. The extruded profile has a substantially rectangular cross-section. The battery module housing 20 has several receiving spaces, each containing a cell stack arrangement 30. These cell stack arrangements 30 are essentially identical, so only the design of one of the cell stack arrangements 30 will be discussed in detail below. The descriptions apply accordingly to the other cell stack arrangements 30.
[0046] The battery module housing 20 has an insertion opening, the cell stack arrangement 30 being inserted through the insertion opening into the receiving space and thus into the battery module housing 20. This insertion opening is then closed with a top plate. For clarity, the top plate is shown in the Fig. 1 not shown.
[0047] The cell stack arrangement 30 comprises a cell stack 31, wherein the cell stack 31 contains several battery cells 32, the battery cells 32 being stacked side by side in a stacking direction. In this case, the stacking direction is identical to the transverse direction Y. The cell stack arrangement 30 also comprises a cell carrier 35. This cell carrier 35 is arranged on one end face of the cell stack 31. Another cell carrier 35 is arranged on the opposite end face of the cell stack 31. The respective cell carrier 35 serves, in particular, for contacting or interconnecting the individual battery cells 32. The cell stack arrangement 30 is essentially identical in the area of each cell carrier 35, so that only the area of one cell carrier 35 will be described in more detail below.
[0048] A gap 40 is formed between the end face and the cell carrier 35. This gap 40 is filled with a flame-retardant substance 41. In this case, the flame-retardant substance 41 is a silicone foam. The flame-retardant substance 41 is introduced into the gap 40 in liquid form and subsequently hardened. Fig. Figure 5 shows the cell stack arrangement 30 in a state prior to filling the space 40. Curing can occur without further measures. However, it is also conceivable that curing requires the application of heat and / or radiation, such as UV light. It is considered particularly advantageous if at least two components are present in the liquid form that react chemically with each other to form the flame-retardant substance 41.
[0049] The cell stack arrangement 30 is essentially cuboid in shape and has four longitudinal sides extending between the opposing end faces. A main expansion surface of the battery cells 32 lies essentially parallel to the two longitudinal sides that are opposite each other in the transverse direction Y. An insertion aid 50 is arranged on each of these two longitudinal sides, which each form an outer surface of the cell stack arrangement 30. These insertion aids are essentially identical in design, so that their design for only one insertion aid 50 will be described in more detail below.
[0050] The insertion aid 50 is formed in one piece and is essentially plate-shaped. In this case, the insertion aid 50 consists of a flexible GRP plate and completely covers the corresponding longitudinal side of the cell stack 31. The insertion aid 50 prevents direct contact between the corresponding longitudinal side of the cell stack 31 and an inner surface of the battery module housing 20, particularly when the cell stack assembly 30 is inserted into the receiving space of the battery module housing 20.
[0051] In its initial state, the cell stack arrangement 30 has a bulge formed in the stacking direction of the battery cells 32. When the cell stack arrangement 30 is inserted into the battery module housing 20, the battery cells 32 are compressed in the stacking direction, in particular to achieve a mechanical preload of the battery cells 32 of the cell stack 31 in the battery module housing 20. Accordingly, when the cell stack arrangement 30 is inserted, contact is made between the respective insertion aid 50 and an inner surface of the battery module housing 20. The insertion aid 50 prevents damage to the outer battery cells 32 of the cell stack 31 from mechanical contact with the battery module housing 20, in particular frictional contact with the battery module housing 20, when the cell stack arrangement 30 is inserted. The insertion aids 50 also protect the battery module housing 20 from burn-through or delay burn-through if the external battery cells 32 burn through.
[0052] Each insertion aid 50 has two end sections 51 opposite each other in the longitudinal direction X. The insertion aid 50 is mounted in the respective cell carrier 35 by means of these end sections 51. The cell carriers 35 are supported against each other in the longitudinal direction X by the insertion aids 50. This minimizes the stress on the battery cells 32 when the cell stack arrangement 30 is inserted into the battery module housing 20, as the shear forces required for insertion are essentially absorbed by the insertion aids 50 and transferred into the cell carriers 35. For this purpose, each end section 51 extends beyond the cell stack 31 and the adjacent gap 40 to the respective cell carrier 35. This laterally limits the gap 40, i.e., in the transverse direction Y.
[0053] Each end section 51 has a slot arrangement 52, which divides the end section 51 into a connection section 54 and a cell carrier cover section 55. In the embodiment shown in the figures, the slot arrangement 52 comprises a first slot 521 and a second slot 522. The first slot 521 extends from a first outer edge 511 of the end section 51 and is angled in an L-shape. The second slot 522 extends from a second outer edge 512 of the end section 51 opposite the first outer edge 511 and is angled in an L-shape, like the first slot 521. This is particularly evident from the illustration of the Fig. 6 can be seen in particular. As the Fig. As can be seen in Figure 6, the first slot 521 extends further into the end section 51 in the vertical direction Z than the second slot 522. The extension of the respective slots 521 and 522 in the longitudinal direction X, however, is identical. Due to the design of the slot arrangement 52, the cell carrier cover section 55 is essentially T-shaped, and the connection section 54 has a first subsection 541 and a second subsection 542, with a web 552 of the T-shaped cell carrier cover section 55 running between the first subsection 541 and the second subsection 542.
[0054] The two sections 541 and 542 of the connecting section 54 are bent inwards and inserted into a receiving groove 351 of the cell carrier 35 associated with the end section 51, and are thus supported in the cell carrier 35. When shear forces are applied in the longitudinal direction X, the sections 541 and 542 are supported in the receiving groove 351.
[0055] The cell carrier cover section 55 extends over an outer surface of the cell carrier 35, such that the cell carrier cover section 55 is positioned between the outer surface of the cell carrier 35 and the inner surface of the battery module housing 20. This cell carrier cover section 55 prevents direct contact between the outer surface of the cell carrier 35 and the inner surface of the battery module housing 20. Furthermore, the cell carrier cover section 55 prevents or at least delays a fire-through of the battery module housing 20 adjacent to the cell carrier 35.
[0056] The present design provides for the introduction of the flame-retardant substance 41 in flowable or liquid form into the space 40, thus filling the space 40 once the insertion aids 50 are already installed, as the insertion aids 50 are required for the lateral delimitation of the respective space 40. However, due to the slot arrangement 52 and the bending of the sections 541 and 542, the end section 51 has through-openings 58 through which the liquid could escape when the space 40 is filled. To prevent this, the through-opening 58 is closed by means of a cover strip 60 bonded to the end section 51 in the area adjacent to the space 40. The cover strip 60 is attached to an inner surface of the end section 51 facing the space 40. Fig. Figure 6 shows, as an example, one of the end sections 51 with the attached cover strip 60 in a view of the inside of the end section 51. The Fig. The arrangement shown in Figure 6 depicts the insertion aid 50 before the bending of the subsections 541, 542. In this state, the insertion aid 50 is essentially planar and the cell carrier cover section 55 and the subsections 541, 542 are thus essentially in the same plane.
[0057] The cover strip 60 has an adhesive strip, the adhesive strip having a carrier layer 61 whose underside is provided with an adhesive layer 62. The cover strip 60 is only bonded to the first subsection 541 and the second subsection 542, and not to the cell carrier cover section 55, in order to allow unimpeded bending of the subsections 541 and 542. To prevent the cover strip 60 from bonding to the cell carrier cover section 55, in this case to the web 552 of the cell carrier cover section 55, the adhesive layer 62 is locally provided with a lamination 63 that covers the adhesive layer 62, as shown in particular by the Fig.As can be seen in Figure 7. This lamination 63 is designed to be visually different from the upper surface of the carrier layer 61, which faces away from the underside. For example, the lamination 63 can be a different color than the upper surface of the carrier layer 61. The lamination 63 can, particularly in the case of a transparent or translucent design of the insertion aid 50, serve as a reference for the correct positioning of the cover strip 60 and for checking the correct alignment of the insertion aid 50 during its assembly on the cell stack 31.
[0058] The insertion aid 50 can be manufactured from a plate-shaped or strip-shaped starting body by incorporating the slot arrangement 52 and, if necessary, by trimming the outer contour. The starting body can, for example, be a flexible GRP plate.
