AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Existing processes for producing aromatic compounds from pyrolysis oil are inefficient, leading to limited applications and high aromatic content that is often burned as fuel oil, despite its potential as a valuable petrochemical intermediate.
Method used
A multi-stage refining process using a slurry-phase reactor with mixed metal oxide catalysts and a fixed-bed reactor with mesoporous zeolite-supported metal catalysts, followed by aromatization, hydrodealkylation, and transalkylation to produce benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) from pyrolysis oil.
Benefits of technology
Enhances the production of BTX compounds, maximizing yield and utilizing pyrolysis oil as a cost-effective feedstock for petrochemical intermediates.

Abstract
A process for producing aromatic compounds from pyrolysis oil, comprising: Refining the pyrolysis oil to pyrolysis gasoline in a multi-stage reactor comprising a slurry phase reactor and a fixed bed reactor, wherein the slurry phase reactor comprises a mixed metal oxide catalyst and the fixed bed reactor comprises a mesoporous zeolite-supported metal catalyst; Aromatization of the pyrolysis gasoline in an aromatization unit; Hydrodealkylation and transalkylation of a product from the aromatization unit in a hydrodealkylation-transalkylation unit, thereby generating an aromatic stream; and Processing the aromatic stream in an aromatic recovery complex to produce the aromatic compounds, which include benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX).
