Abstract
Description
Field of the invention
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of cloud computing and data security. More specifically, it relates to systems and methods for securing cloud data storage using quantum-resistant encryption techniques that provide enhanced protection against quantum computing threats. Background of the invention
[0002] With the rapid advancement of quantum computing, existing cryptographic systems are becoming vulnerable to potential attacks that can easily crack classical encryption techniques such as RSA, ECC, and others. The increasing reliance on cloud storage for critical data makes it imperative to develop quantum-resistant encryption techniques to protect information from such risks. Existing cloud data security systems rely on traditional cryptographic methods, which are insufficient to counter quantum-based attacks. With the advancement of quantum computing capabilities, cloud service providers face unprecedented challenges in maintaining data integrity and confidentiality. Therefore, there is a need for a system that can integrate quantum-resistant encryption techniques to ensure robust data security.
[0003] Rapid technological development, particularly in cloud computing and data storage, has transformed the way organizations and individuals manage vast amounts of data. As cloud storage has become increasingly popular, concerns about data security have also grown. Traditional cryptographic methods form the basis of data encryption, providing a layer of protection for confidential information. However, the advent of quantum computing poses a serious threat to these existing encryption techniques. In this context, the development of quantum-resistant encryption methods is critical to ensuring long-term security in cloud data storage environments.
[0004] Existing encryption techniques are widely used because they offer a relatively high level of security with reasonable computing power. Data stored in the cloud is typically encrypted using one of these methods. This protects it from unauthorized access by ensuring that only those with the correct decryption key can access the information.
[0005] However, the security of these classical encryption methods is threatened by the potential capabilities of quantum computers. Quantum computers operate according to the principles of quantum mechanics and can process information in ways that classical computers cannot. The threat posed by quantum computing is not merely theoretical; advances in quantum computing are advancing rapidly. Although fully functional, large-scale quantum computers are not yet commercially available, various companies and research institutions are making significant strides toward this goal. As quantum technology continues to advance, the timeframe for quantum computers capable of breaking classical encryptions is shrinking. It is estimated that quantum computers could be able to crack RSA and ECC encryption within the next decade, making current data encryption standards vulnerable.
[0006] In response to these new threats, the field of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) has gained considerable attention. Post-quantum cryptography refers to cryptographic techniques designed to be resilient against attacks by quantum computers. These techniques are based on mathematical problems that are believed to be difficult to solve for both classical and quantum computers. The most promising candidates for post-quantum cryptographic techniques include lattice-based cryptography, hash-based cryptography, multivariate quadratic equations, and code-based cryptography.
[0007] Multivariate quadratic equations have also been proposed as a basis for post-quantum cryptography. These schemes are based on the difficulty of solving systems of multivariate quadratic equations over finite fields. Although these cryptosystems have been extensively studied, they have certain drawbacks, including large key sizes and high computational complexity, making them less practical for large-scale encryption of cloud storage.
[0008] Despite the promising developments in post-quantum cryptography, several challenges remain to be overcome before these techniques can be implemented at scale. One of the most significant is the integration of post-quantum cryptography into existing cloud storage infrastructures. Many current systems are designed to work with classical cryptographic techniques, and retrofitting these systems to support post-quantum cryptography requires significant changes to both hardware and software. Furthermore, the computational requirements of post-quantum cryptography are often higher than those of classical cryptographic methods, which can lead to longer latencies and reduced performance in cloud storage environments.
[0009] Another significant disadvantage of existing solutions is their vulnerability during the transition phase between classical and quantum-resistant encryption. Data currently encrypted using classical methods may still be vulnerable if quantum computers are able to crack these encryption systems in the future. This is particularly concerning for organizations that store sensitive or long-lived data in the cloud. Information encrypted today may still be relevant in 10 or 20 years, when quantum computers might be able to decrypt it. Therefore, while post-quantum cryptography is being developed, it is important to consider the security of data already encrypted using classical methods.
[0010] The development of quantum-resistant encryption methods is crucial to addressing the vulnerabilities that quantum computing introduces for data storage in the cloud. While existing encryption methods such as RSA, ECC, and AES have performed well in classical computing environments, they are not designed to withstand the power of quantum computers. Post-quantum cryptographic techniques such as lattice-based cryptography, hash-based cryptography, and multivariate quadratic equations offer promising solutions, but challenges remain regarding integration, computational power, and standardization. As quantum computing advances, the need for quantum-resistant encryption systems becomes increasingly urgent to ensure the security of data stored in the cloud in the future. Summary of the invention

[0045] In summary, the system provides a secure, quantum-resistant approach to encrypting cloud data storage, ensuring that confidential information remains protected even with advances in quantum computing.
[0046] The system for quantum-resistant encryption in cloud data storage described in the claims is equipped with an architecture that incorporates advanced post-quantum cryptographic techniques. The main feature of the system is its quantum-resistant encryption unit, which implements lattice-based cryptographic techniques to ensure that data encryption is secure against attacks by quantum computers. The lattice-based cryptography used in the system is based on the difficulty of solving lattice problems, specifically the shortest vector problem (SVP) and learning with errors (LWE). These problems are computationally intractable even for quantum computers, making them suitable for ensuring long-term security.
[0047] The encryption technique in the Quantum-Resilient Encryption Unit primarily uses NTRUEncrypt, a public-key cryptosystem based on lattice theory. NTRUEncrypt exploits the complexity of searching for short, nearby vectors in a high-dimensional lattice to ensure encryption security. The system begins by generating a public and private key pair, where the private key is a short vector in the lattice, and the public key is derived from this private key in combination with a large random error vector. When encrypting data, the technique uses the public key to encrypt the data and adds random noise to the ciphertext to ensure security. The ciphertext can only be decrypted using the private key, which allows the Quantum-Resilient Encryption Unit to recover the original plaintext data.
[0048] In addition to lattice-based cryptography, the system also supports the integration of multivariate quadratic equations for encryption, which involves solving systems of multivariate quadratic polynomials over a finite field. The multivariate encryption process generates ciphertexts by solving these equations in such a way that only the recipient with the correct private key can reverse the process and retrieve the original data. These techniques are known for their resilience to quantum computing attacks, as solving multivariate quadratic problems, which are difficult for both classical and quantum computers, is inherently complex.
[0049] The data processing unit is critical for preparing data for encryption by ensuring that the data is properly structured and encoded before being passed to the encryption techniques. It pre-processes the data into fixed-size blocks compatible with grid-based encryption techniques, thus optimizing both encryption speed and storage efficiency. The unit also includes a hardware acceleration module designed to accelerate the data encoding process and reduce latency in the encryption cycle. By splitting the data into smaller, manageable blocks, the encryption techniques can be executed in parallel, improving the overall system performance.
[0050] Key management is another fundamental aspect of the system and is handled by the Key Management Unit, which uses a lattice-based key generation technique. This unit generates quantum-resistant keys using a cryptographic process based on the learning-with-errors (LWE) problem. The LWE-based technique generates public / private key pairs by selecting random secret vectors and introducing controlled noise.
[0051] The Secure Transmission Unit ensures that data remains encrypted throughout its journey from the user's device to cloud storage. This unit uses quantum-safe key exchange protocols to securely manage the encryption of the transmission channels. Quantum-safe transmission technology relies on lattice-based key exchange protocols such as FrodoKEM or NTRU-KEM, which generate shared secret keys between two communicating entities over a public network. These keys are used to encrypt the transmitted data, ensuring it remains secure during the transmission phase. If a malicious entity attempts to intercept the data, the complexity of the lattice-based cryptographic schemes prevents unauthorized decryption, even with quantum computing capabilities.
[0052] Once the encrypted data reaches the cloud storage unit, it is divided into smaller segments, each encrypted with a unique quantum-resistant encryption key. This partitioned encryption process increases security by ensuring that even if one data segment is compromised, the rest of the data remains secure. The cloud storage system integrates a hardware-based storage controller that manages the encryption and decryption processes for each partition. This controller is equipped with custom hardware that enables parallel encryption, allowing the system to efficiently process large data sets without compromising security.
[0053] The Data Retrieval Unit plays a crucial role when authorized users attempt to access encrypted data from the cloud. Following a valid authentication request, this unit retrieves the encrypted data from the storage partitions and passes it to a hardware-based, quantum-resistant decryption processor. The decryption processor implements the inversion of the encryption technique and uses the private keys generated by the Key Management Unit to decrypt the data.
[0054] The system's modular architecture enables the flexible implementation of various quantum-resistant encryption techniques. For example, the Quantum-Resilient Encryption Unit can dynamically switch between different techniques, such as hash-based cryptography for signature generation and code-based cryptography for additional encryption layers. The adaptive encryption engine can assess the sensitivity level of the data and select the most suitable quantum-resistant technique based on real-time security assessments. This adaptability ensures that the system remains highly secure and efficient even as quantum-resistant cryptographic techniques evolve.
[0055] The system integrates advanced post-quantum cryptographic techniques such as lattice-based encryption, multivariate quadratic encryption, and lattice-based key exchange protocols to provide a quantum-resistant framework for securing cloud data storage. Every hardware unit, from the encryption and decryption processors to the key management and data processing units, is designed to ensure the system operates securely and efficiently even under the threat of advances in quantum computing.
