Description
[0001] Drinking straws for sipping and drinking liquids have long been known in various designs. In a basic form, they consist of an elongated tube open at both ends, with one end immersed in the liquid to be consumed and the other end placed in the mouth by the consumer.
[0002] US patent 2014 / 0263718 A1 discloses a drinking straw with a tongue-shaped section at one end, designed to remove food particles from between the teeth of a consumer. Until needed, the tongue-shaped section can be loosely inserted into the opening of the straw, allowing liquid to be drawn freely from the bottom of a drinking vessel.
[0003] More recently, variations have emerged in which the opening at the end of the straw that the consumer puts in their mouth is closed, and instead, several small holes, for example four, are provided at the upper end of the straw in the area of the wall. The liquid is drawn in through these holes and enters the consumer's mouth. Such straws are also known as "sensory straws." The beverage emerging from several small openings creates a different and often more pleasant drinking experience, as the liquid does not flow out of the main opening in a single stream, but is directed simultaneously through the small holes into different areas of the mouth. Claims
1. A method for at least partially sealing a main opening of a paper-based drinking straw (1), comprising the following steps: - providing a tubular paper-based drinking straw (1); - cutting an end region of the drinking straw (1) so that a tongue-shaped portion (4) is formed; - folding the tongue-shaped portion (4) over the opening (3a) of the drinking straw (1) so that two lateral openings (10) are formed; - adhesively bonding the tongue-shaped portion (4) to the outer side of the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1).
2. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that, for bonding the tongue-shaped portion (4) to the outer side of the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1), a defined amount of adhesive is applied to the outer side of the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1).
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that, in addition to the two lateral openings, at least one hole is made in the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1).
4. The method according to claim 3, characterized in that, in addition to the two lateral openings, two diametrically opposite holes are made in the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1).
5. The method according to one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that the end region of the drinking straw (1) is cut by making two first cuts, along two first cut lines (5) starting from an end edge (8) of the drinking straw (1), into the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1) and making a second cut along a second cut line (6), the second cut being made in a direction parallel to the end edge (8) of the drinking straw (1) and the cutting line (6) connecting the end points of the two first cutting lines (5).
6. The method according to claim 5, characterized in that the two first cuts are formed simultaneously in a single cutting operation with the aid of a cutting tool which is positioned at a point on the end edge (8) and is inserted into the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1) at an angle with respect to the longitudinal direction (L) of the drinking straw.
7. The method according to claim 6, characterized in that the angle with respect to the longitudinal direction (L) is 5° to 35°, preferably 10° to 20°, particularly preferably approximately 15°.
8. The method according to one of claims 5 to 7, characterized in that the cutting depth of the second cut into the drinking straw (1) is half to 2 / 3, preferably approximately 3 / 5, of the diameter of the drinking straw (1).
9. The method according to one of claims 1 to 8, characterized in that the tongue-shaped portion (4) is rounded at its free end (11).
10. The method according to one of claims 1 to 9, characterized in that a fast-setting hot-melt adhesive suitable for food contact is used for bonding the tongue-shaped portion (4) to the outer side of the wall (2) of the drinking straw (1).
