[0003] The object of the invention is a shelf-ready product package comprising a shelf-ready tray and protective packaging as defined in the preamble of claim 1, and a method according to claim 13 for forming a shelf-ready package.
[0004] The shelf-ready package according to the invention is preferably a product-specific package to be fabricated from cardboard or paperboard for packing various products during their transportation and storage and for placing them on display on the shelves of retail outlets. The purpose of shelf-ready packaging is to protect products during their transportation and storage and also to speed up shelving work at retail businesses and enhance visibility of the products to customers .
[0005] According to what is known in the art, shelf-ready packages are fabricated e.g. by folding packaging from a box blank sheet over the top of the products, in which packaging are sides with holes, i.e. perforation, to be torn open for displaying the products from the package. The aforementioned packaging technique is called the "wraparound" technique. In these solutions one problem is the imprecision and unreliability of the perforation. When tearing the package open, the package can tear in the wrong place, in which case the products will not be displayed from the package in the manner planned, or they will drop out of the package, or will be difficult to take out of the package. The place torn might also be sharp and from time to time injure the hand of e.g. a shelver or customer. An opened package can also be untidy if the perforation tears in the wrong place. Furthermore, opening perforated shelf-ready packages requires physical strength in a person' s hands and opening them and getting the shelf-ready packages into sales condition takes a lot of time.
[0006] According to another technique known in the art, products are placed on top of a tray that has been folded at its sides and the actual load-bearing box is placed upside-down on top of the products. The aforementioned technique is generally called the "tray" technique. A problem with this technique is the abundant use of packing material, because there is to a large extent two layers of packing material on top of the products and partly also multiple layers at the point of edges reinforced by folding. Since there are many folded edges in a packaging carton, the opening of packages according to this known technique into an unbroken sheet for recycling is laborious .
[0007] A solution according to this type of "tray" technique is disclosed in specification US 2011 / 0155627. In it, the protective cover placed on top of the tray during transportation is spot-glued or taped to attach to the side walls of the tray. The fastenings are opened and the tray, including the products, is ready to be placed on a shelf. The walls of all the sides of the tray are much shallower than the products inside the package and the height of the side walls is adapted to be the height of the front wall at the front and the height of the rear wall at the back, in which case since the front wall is shallower than the rear wall there are sloped sections in the side walls for reconciling the different heights of the front and rear walls.
[0008] Solutions known in the art are difficult to open and the products remain partly "hidden" inside the package. In particular, the last products inside a package are difficult to notice and / or to take out of the package. The packages are also often composed of many materials, which complicates recycling . The aim of the present invention is to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks of prior art and to provide a shelfready package, from which the transportation protection can be removed quickly, easily and with minimal work and from which an optimally functional shelf-ready tray can be fashioned. Another aim is to provide a shelf-ready package that is acceptable as is for recycling and is easily and quickly transformable into essentially flat sheets, which take less space and which are easy to deliver to a recycling point. Additionally, the aim of the invention is to provide a shelfready tray on which the products are well displayed and are easy to take from the shelf, and that the shelf-ready tray supports the protective packaging during transportation and storage. The solution according to the invention speeds up shelving work and displays the products better. At the same time it makes the printing of product information on the surfaces of the shelf-ready tray unnecessary because the product information is highly visible directly from the product package. The aim of the invention is also to provide an easy and cost-efficient method for forming a shelf-ready package .

[0010] Preferably in the solution according to the invention the shelf-ready tray of the shelf-ready package is formed with a box-forming apparatus to correspond to the dimensions of the product package batch. The rear wall of the shelf-ready tray is preferably slightly higher than the height of the product package batch, in which case the rear wall of the shelf-ready tray contributes to supporting the protective packaging to be installed on top of the shelf-ready tray. The side parts of the shelf-ready tray are preferably shallow so that they only prevent unintended movement of the products in the sideways direction and keep the rear wall of the shelf-ready tray in the correct position. Depending on the nature of the products, the front edge of the shelf-ready tray can be fabricated to a corresponding height with, or to a shallower height than, the side edges of the shelf-ready tray, or the shelf-ready tray can even be fabricated completely without a front edge. Protective packaging to be fabricated on a box-forming apparatus is installed on top of the shelf-ready tray, the dimensions of which packaging are slightly larger than the shelf-ready tray in such a way that the protective packaging slides completely over the top of the shelf-ready tray. The purpose of the protective packaging is to act as protection for the shelf-ready tray and the product package batch, in which case the handling of the products in the transport & distribution chains is facilitated and the handling does not damage the products. The protective packaging preferably has one or more f laps / protrusions on the bottom part of its side edges, which f laps / protrusions fold under the shelf-ready tray and are fastened to the base of the shelf-ready tray with glue dots or corresponding. The rear wall plus its side flaps of the shelf-ready tray of the shelf-ready package preferably supports the protective packaging of the shelf-ready package, preventing it from pressing too far downwards and from resting on the packed products. The shelf-ready package is opened by tearing the protrusions of the protective packaging that are folded under the shelf-ready tray away from the glue, and by lifting the protective packaging off the shelf-ready tray, in which case the shelf-ready tray is straightaway ready to be placed on the shelf of a retail outlet, and the products are easily and prominently available. In a second preferred embodiment, the sides of the protective packaging are fastened at their bottom edges directly to the sides of the shelf-ready tray with dot-type fastenings, in which case protrusions folding under the shelf-ready tray are not needed. In both embodiments the protective packaging can be detached easily and quickly from on top of the shelf-ready tray and the products can be lifted onto a shelf by means of the shelfready tray.
[0011] One advantage, among others, of the solution according to the invention is that the material to be used in the shelf-ready package can be reduced by minimizing the quantity and size of unnecessary overlapping packaging layers. Furthermore, the sides of the shelf-ready tray of a shelf-ready package and the sides of the protective packaging are gently, easily and quickly openable into sheets for recycling. [0022] Fig. la presents a preferred embodiment of the shelf-ready tray 1 of the shelf-ready package when a box blank sheet. The shelf-ready tray 1 comprises a base 2, a front wall 3, two side walls 4 and a rear wall 5. The shelf-ready tray 1 is preferably fabricated from a single box blank sheet cut into shape, having creased / scored and / or perforated folding lines 6, which are marked in the figure with dashed lines. By folding all the walls 3, 4 and 5 according to the folding lines 6 upwards by 90 degrees and the protrusions on the rear wall, i.e. the side flaps 7 of the rear wall, also frontwards by 90 degrees as well as connecting by glueing, or some other known method, at least the side walls 4 to the side flaps 7 of the rear wall 5 and to the flaps 8 of the front wall, a ready- to-use shelf-ready tray 1 of a shelf-ready package can be formed. The side flaps 7 of the rear wall 5 of the shelf-ready tray 1 can also be fabricated to be slightly wider, if it is desired to improve the support properties of the rear wall 5. Furthermore the top edge of the rear wall 5 of the shelf-ready tray 1 is preferably provided with a notch 35. The purpose of the notch 35 is to enable rapid hanging of the products stored on the shelf-ready tray 1 of the shelf-ready package on the prongs of the retail outlet, such prongs generally being used to hang products for display. This is, therefore, an alternative to leaving the shelf-ready tray 1 with its products directly on the shelf of the retailer. By means of the notch 35, the retail display prong can be quickly and easily pushed in one go through the suspension hole of all the products. The shelf-ready tray 1 is preferably fabricated in its entirety as a fiber structure of a single material, which is easy to recycle. The manufacturing material is not, however, limited only to a recycleable fiber structure.
[0023] Fig. lb presents an oblique side view from above of the shelfready tray 1 of the embodiment when ready folded. The side flaps 7 of the rear wall 5 of the shelf-ready tray 1 are now at least partly fastened in the fastening areas 9 e.g. by glueing to the side walls 4 of the shelf-ready tray 1. The rear wall 5 of the shelf-ready tray 1 of the shelf-ready package is preferably as large as or slightly higher than the packed products, in which case the rear wall 5 with its side flaps 7 supports the packed products well and prevents the protective packaging (Figs. 2a-b) of the shelf-ready package from pressing against the packed products. This type of pressing, in particular, could be possible when a number of shelf-ready packagings are packed one on top of another in conjunction with transportation. The side walls 4 of the shelf-ready tray 1 also support the base 2 of the shelf-ready tray when the shelf-ready tray is lifted onto a shelf or otherwise moved. The side walls 4 of the shelf-ready tray 1 are, however, essentially quite shallow, in which case the products are easily observable from above the shelf-ready tray. The front wall 3 of the shelf-ready tray 1 in this embodiment is approx, one-half of the height of the side walls 4, in which case the visibility of the packed products inside the shelf-ready tray 1 is further improved but nevertheless the spilling out of products via the front part of the shelfready tray 1 is prevented. The height of the front wall 3 of the shelf-ready tray 1 can vary from zero to the height of the side walls 4, depending on the requirements set for the products on the shelf-ready tray. The height of the side walls 4 of the shelf-ready tray 1 is approx. 5-40%, preferably 5- 25%, and very advantageously 5-15%, of the height of the rear wall 5. The side walls 4 can also be shaped in such a way that the side walls 4 are shallower in the proximity of the front wall 3 than in the proximity of the rear wall 5. The shallowing of the side walls 4 towards the front edge 3 can be linear or can follow some other freely selectable shape.
[0024] Fig. 1c presents a sectioned side view of the shelf-ready tray 1 of the embodiment, the embodiment also comprising the friction material 10 of the shelf-ready tray. The friction material 10 is e.g. a corrugated board sheet, the corrugation of which prevents the free movement of the bottom edge of the products 100 towards the front edge of the shelf-ready tray 1, particularly when some of the products 100 have been removed or if there is no front wall 3 at all on the shelf-ready tray. This type of friction material 10 fabricated from corrugated board, or other friction material, can also be disposed on the side walls 4 of the shelf-ready tray 1, in which case they at least partly cover the inside surfaces of the side walls. The friction material 10 can also be e.g. a thin rubber mat disposed inside the shelf-ready tray 1. Depending on the physical characteristics of the packed products 100, it may be that friction material 10 is not required at all. The friction material 10 can cover the whole base 2 of the shelf-ready tray 1 or it can be one or more strip-shaped pieces in the longitudinal direction of the base of the shelf-ready tray. Fig. 1c presents by way of illustration one product 100 (e.g. a pack of pre-sliced deli meat) , drawn in the figure with dashed lines, on the shelf-ready tray 1. There are typically a number of such products 100 on a shelf-ready tray 1. Fig. 2a presents the protective packaging 11, when still a box blank sheet, of one preferred embodiment of a shelf-ready package. The box blank sheet is folded into ready protective packaging 11 by means of the folding lines 12, 13 and 14 marked with dashed lines. These folding lines 12, 13 and 14 can be creased / scored and / or perforated lines. The protective packaging 11 comprises four walls 15, which are folded along the folding lines 12 into the closed form. Also on the box blank sheet are a flap 16 to connect the walls 15 into a rectangular form and flaps 18 forming the roof 17 by means of the folding line 13. The height and width of the walls 15 of the protective packaging 11 are dimensioned in such a way that the rear wall, plus its side flap, of the shelf-ready tray supports the erected protective packaging 11 against settling when the shelf-ready package is assembled and that the protective packaging 11 can be placed on top of the shelfready tray during transportation. The flap 16 to connect into form can be integral as presented in Fig. 2a or the connection can be made by means of two or more smaller flaps. The protective packaging 11 is closed preferably at least partly from above by folding the flaps 18 on the top part of the walls 15 according to the folding line 13 ninety degrees towards the center of the protective packaging 11 to become the roof 17. The folded flaps 18 are connected to the adjacent flaps preferably by glueing. If it is desired to fully close the protective packaging 11 at its top part, at least one of the pair of flaps 18 of the walls 15 is dimensioned in such a way that they extend when folding to at least abut each other. If it is desired, and the packed products permit it, an aperture can be left on top of the protective packaging 11 by shortening the flaps 18 of the walls 15. Such an aperture reduces the requirement for the material to be used and enables even easier disassembly of the protective packaging 11 for recycling after use. On the bottom edge of the two opposite walls 15 of the protective packaging 11 are also flaps, i.e. protrusions 19, which are folded according to the folding line 14 under the shelf-ready tray and fastened to its base preferably e.g. by glueing with holt-melt glue dots. The shelf-ready package is made to be shelf-ready by opening the aforementioned glued joints of the flaps 19 of the protective packaging 11 and by lifting the protective packaging 11 off the top of the shelf-ready tray. The protrusions 19 of the bottom edge of the walls 15 of the protective packaging 11 can be the whole length of the walls of the protective packaging and extend to abut each other or can even overlap under the shelf-ready tray. Preferably they cover only a part of the base of the shelf-ready tray, in which case detachment of the protective packaging 11 from the shelf-ready tray is facilitated and less packaging material is used. The protrusions 19 can be integral pieces or can be comprised of two or more protrusions, and the protrusions 19 can be located either on the long walls and / or the short walls 15 of the protective packaging 11. In a second preferred embodiment the protrusions 19 can be completely omitted and the protective packaging 11 is fastened directly to the side walls of the shelf-ready tray in the proximity of the bottom edge of the walls 15 of the protective packaging 11. In such a case the walls 15 of the protective packaging extend at least partly onto the side walls of the shelf-ready tray.

Claims
CLAIMS1. A shelf-ready package (30) comprising a shelf-ready tray (1) and protective packaging (11) to be placed on top of the shelf-ready tray (1) as a cover, which shelf-ready tray (1) comprises at least a base (2) , two side walls (4) and a rear wall (5) , and which protective packaging (11) comprises at least four walls (15, 21, 23) as well as a cover (17) at least partly covering the products (100) from above in such a way that the protective packaging (11) of the shelf-ready package (30) is tightly fittable on top of the shelf-ready tray (1) , in which case the protective packaging (11) further comprises protrusions (19) to be folded under the shelf-ready tray (1) , and in that the openable joint (26) between the shelf-ready tray (1) and the protective packaging (11) is on the base (2) of the shelf-ready tray (1) , characterized in that the height of the side walls (4) of the shelf-ready tray (1) is 5-40% of the height of the rear wall (5) and in that on the rear wall (5) are side flaps (7) to be folded forwards, which flaps are connected with a joint to the side walls (4) of the shelfready tray ( 1 ) .
2. Shelf-ready package (30) according to claim 1, characterized in that the protrusions (19) to be folded under the shelf-ready tray (1) extend to overlap or abut each other below the shelf-ready tray (1) .
3. Shelf-ready package (30) according to claim 1, characterized in that the combined width of the protrusions (19) to be folded under the shelf-ready tray (1) is smaller than the width of the base (2) , in which case a gap remains between the protrusions (19) .
4. Shelf-ready package (30) according to any of claims 1-3, characterized in that there are one or more protrusions (19)to be folded under the shelf-ready tray (1) on at least two walls (15, 21, 23) of the protective packaging (11) .
5. Shelf-ready package (30) according to any of claims 1-4, characterized in that the openable joint (26) between the shelf-ready tray (1) and the protective packaging (11) is glue, hot-melt adhesive or corresponding.
6. Shelf-ready package (30) according to any of claims 1-5, characterized in that the openable joint (26) is realized as one or more dot-type joints.
7. Shelf-ready package (30) according to any of claims 1-6, characterized in that the front wall (3) of the shelf-ready tray (1) is at its maximum the height of the side walls (4) of the shelf-ready tray (1) and at its minimum does not exist at all .
8. Shelf-ready package (30) according to any of claims 1-7, characterized in that the rear wall (5) of the shelf-ready tray (1) is as large as or higher than the products (100) contained in the shelf-ready package (30) .
9. Shelf-ready package (30) according to any of claims 1-8, characterized in that on the base (2) or on the inside of the side walls (4) of the shelf-ready tray (1) is friction material (10) , which friction material (10) at least partly covers the base (2) and / or the side walls (4) .

Method for forming a shelf-ready package (30) , the shelfready package (30) comprising a shelf-ready package (1) and protective packaging (11) , in which case the method comprises the following phases:- box blank sheets comprising folding lines (6, 12, 13, 14,20, 24) are formed for the shelf-ready tray (1) and the protective packaging (11) ,- the shelf-ready tray (1) and protective packaging (11) are formed from the box blank sheets, in which case the shelfready tray (1) comprises a base (2) , side walls (4) and a rear wall (5) , and the protective packaging (11) comprises four walls (15, 21, 23) and a cover (17) at least partly covering the products (100) ,- the protective packaging (11) is placed on top of the shelfready tray ( 1 ) ,- protrusions (19) for folding under the shelf-ready tray (1) are fabricated for the protective packaging (11) , in such a way that the protective packaging (11) is connected with an openable joint (26) to the base (2) of the shelf-ready tray (1) via the protrusions (19) of the protective packaging (11) , characterized in that- the side walls (4) of the shelf-ready tray (1) are formed,18 the height of which walls is 5-40% of the height of the rear wall (5) , and- side flaps (7) to be folded forwards are formed from the rear wall (5) and the side flaps (7) are connected with a joint to the side walls (4) of the shelf-ready tray (1) , in which case the side flaps (7) support the protective packaging when the shelf-ready package is closed.
14. Method according to claim 13, characterized in that the protrusions (19) of the protective packaging (11) are fabricated to extend to overlap or abut each other below the shelf-ready tray (1) .
15. Method according to claim 13, characterized in that the protrusions (19) of the protective packaging (11) are fabricated in such a way that the combined width of the protrusions (19) to be folded under the base (2) is smaller than the width of the base (2) , in which case a gap remains between the protrusions (19) .
16. Method according to any of claims 13-15, characterized in that the height of the rear wall of the shelf-ready tray (1) is dimensioned in such a way that it is as large as or larger than the height of the products (100) .
17. Method according to any of claims 13-16, characterized in that on the top edge of the rear wall (5) of the shelf-ready tray (1) a notch (35) is fabricated for the rapid hanging of the products (100) on the display prongs of the retail outlet.
