AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Plaster or gypsum moulds used in manufacturing items, such as ceramics, degrade over successive production cycles, leading to reduced surface fidelity, slower green body formation, and a finite lifetime. This requires skilled artisans for manual adjustments, hindering the implementation of automated processes and resulting in material wastage and inconsistent product quality.

Method used

A gypsum mould with integrated sensors that measure characteristics such as moisture content, temperature, and pH within the mould body. These sensors allow for real-time monitoring and data transmission to a control centre, enabling dynamic process control, early identification of mould failure, and optimization of manufacturing processes.

Benefits of technology

The integration of sensors in gypsum moulds enhances the monitoring and control of manufacturing processes, leading to improved surface finish, dimensional accuracy, and extended mould lifespan. This reduces material wastage, minimizes the need for skilled manual adjustments, and enables more efficient and consistent production.

Abstract

A gypsum mould (500) for manufacturing of an item (520) is provided. The gypsum mould (500) has a plurality of sensors (530A, 530B) at least partially received within a mould body (510) where each sensor (530A, 530B) is configured to measure a characteristic of the mould body (510) at a given position. Each sensor (530A, 530B) may be selected to be one of a pair of electrodes, a capacitive sensor, a resistance sensor, a thermal conductivity sensor, a thermocouple, a resistor temperature detector, a thermistor, a semiconductor, an ion-selective electrode or a thermometer. The measured characteristic of the mould body (510) may be one or more of: pH, temperature, water content, anion concentration or cation concentration. A change in the characteristic over time may be monitored and the remaining number of uses of the gypsum mould (500) before failure may be predicted or parameters of the manufacturing process may be controlled based on the sensor data.
