Description

FLAT BLANKS AND CONTAINERS MADE OF WOOD OR DERIVATIVES THEREOF

[0001] This invention relates to the packaging of goods, for example fruits, vegetables or other foods, and containers specially designed, wherein the raw material for making said packaging is wood or derivatives thereof. Background Art and Technical Problems

[0002] The prior art reveals a plurality of packaging made of cardboard or plastic materials. For the cardboard usually, a flat blank is prepared by cutting a sheet of cardboard and inserting several hinges, which are folded to assemble the final container. The cardboard containers produced present several advantages, namely the easy folding of the hinges and some features referred to memory and elastic deformation of said hinges, which may be folded freely due the anisotropic properties that characterize the cardboard.

[0003] The plastic packages are typically produced by injection, thermoforming or blowing process, wherein the plastics materials are processed under high temperature. The plastic packages allow a high geometric freedom and it's possible to produce thin packages with the enough resistance to carry goods, for example food.

[0004] Nevertheless, the cardboard or plastic containers have some relevant drawbacks. In both cases, the materials used have some limitations regarding humidity absorption, which may contaminate the conditioned products, namely fruits and vegetables, reducing their time conservation. Moreover, the vulnerability in the presence of humidity of cardboard containers also impairs its mechanical resistance. To overpass this limitation, a waterproof plastic film may be coated on the paperboard container or paperboard flat blank, but this procedure increases the costs of production of the container, as well as the packing footprint by adding a material that is less environmentally sustainable. Indeed, using this plastic film makes the packing recycling very difficult and economical unfeasible. Moreover, the cardboard containers are also vulnerable to damages by impacts or shocks, which may bring indirectly damages to the storage goods inside the cardboard containers.

[0005] The plastic containers may have a stronger mechanical resistance than the cardboard containers, but it's also not necessarily proper to protect fruits and vegetables from damage such a crushing because normally this kind of package use thin thickness. Furthermore, the plastic, as a raw material, presents additional environmental drawbacks nowadays, because most of the plastics are made from non-renewable sources, namely from the petrochemical industry based on hydrocarbons recovered from oil and natural gas. Both cardboard and plastic are obtained by complex chemical processes with high energy consumption.

[0006] An additional nowadays challenge is food waste, that can be reduced by increasing food time conservation through packing.

[0007] There is a need to develop a container having a better humidity resistance, avoiding the need for any protective or coating element, for example a plastic film. Moreover, there is a need to develop a container that can be assembled without using any adhesives or staples. In the specific case of synthetic adhesives or glues, it is worthwhile to mention that avoiding these bonding means when assembling a container is highly beneficial when a container for foods is aimed.Solution to Problem

[0008] The present invention solves the problems of prior art by developing a flat blank, arranged in a plane that contains an x-axis and a y-axis to make a container, wherein its raw material is wood or derivatives thereof, without any additional material to allow packaging’s 3D assembly. The present invention also solves the inherent problems related to the unidirectional bending of wood hinges, which do not have memory features and it is not possible to bend the wood parallel to the grain, making the folding of a wood flat sheet a challenge for the industry. This limitation is surpassed by developing a set of flat blanks with specific cuts and attachment means comprising tabs and recesses, which allow an assemblage of the container without the necessity of using staples or adhesives, or any other type of additional union or binding component. Given that, this invention allows a packing with proper constructive technical features that is assembled in a container, which provide simultaneously mechanical and humidity resistance, made of an 100% environmentally friendly material.Advantageous Effects of Invention

[0009] In the present invention, the flat blanks are made substantially 100% of wood or its derivatives and that can be made by at least one wood sheet without staples or adhesives, or any other type of additional union material in their essential embodiments. The containers of the present invention can be made by means of a quicker and economical process, considering that any kind of adhesives are necessary to assemblage the container, because using adhesives introduces further steps in process of assembling, and make it more costly.

[0010] The wood or its derivatives have a higher humidity and mechanical resistance, which contributes to a longer conservation of food goods, making the containers produced suitable for storing and transporting of any kind of goods, for example food like fruits, vegetables, cheeses, oysters, aromatic plants or premade food. Moreover, this raw material does not need any previous treatment to have its humidity and mechanical resistance, for example the coating with a plastic film, as a cardboard container.

[0011] Moreover, when a container of the present invention comprises food, it is possible to heat it in an oven, without having concerns about thermal degradations of adhesives, which are absent in the present invention. One shall consider that heating of adhesives may release toxic vapors that may contaminate the food present in a container assembled by means of adhesives.

[0012] The flat blanks can be transported flat for assembling at the customer site, or are made stackable, when already assembled.

[0013] The properties of the surfaces of the wood or derivatives thereof are proper to inclusion of a customer logo and the product information to be packaged.

[0014] The containers are suitable for all types of solid, raw, preprepared, prepared foods, or others type of solid goods. Moreover, the containers according to the invention ensure the integrity of the packaging to deep freezing. In fact, its design overpasses the restrictions associated with isotropic properties of wood.

[0015] The fitting system allows different packaging geometries and shapes, aesthetically appealing and functional.

[0016] The process of making flat sheets and containers requires much lower energy consumption, considering the use of a 100% natural resource without the need for any chemical treatment, involving only the lamination, cutting and conformation of the container.

[0017] With the purpose of promoting an understanding of the principles in accordance with the embodiments of the present invention, reference will be made to the embodiments illustrated in the figures and to the language used to describe the same. Anyway, it must be understood that there is no intention of limiting the scope of the present invention to the contents of the figures.
