Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Pillar reinforcement for a motor vehicle comprising a bevel
[0001] The technical context of the present invention is that of lateral reinforcements of motor vehicles. More particularly, the invention relates to a reinforcement of a lateral pillar of a motor vehicle.
[0002] The safety of persons transported in a motor vehicle is one of the priorities of motor vehicle manufacturers. To this end, the passenger compartments of motor vehicles are designed to guarantee the integrity of the persons located in such passenger compartments. Thus, the pillars which delimit a volume of the passenger compartment are sized and designed to withstand significant mechanical impacts. Indeed, in the event of a side impact, the pillars of the motor vehicle are in the front line, and their resistance, particularly at the start of the impact, is essential to allow time for the occupant protection devices present in the passenger compartment to be triggered.
[0003] As is known, motor vehicle pillars often have complex geometries induced by weight, manufacturing, integration and / or style constraints. Also, it is common for known pillars to include areas of abrupt change in inertia defined by quadratic bending moments and identifiable by discontinuous variations in the geometry of the pillars. These abrupt changes in inertia lead, during a lateral impact, to a concentration of mechanical stresses at the level of these areas of abrupt change in inertia. Consequently, these areas of abrupt change in inertia of the pillars present a high risk of breakage during a lateral impact, which is prohibitive for the safety of the occupants of the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle.
[0004] In order to improve the mechanical characteristics of the pillar with which they are associated and to better absorb the mechanical energy resulting from a side impact, the use of pillar reinforcements is known in particular, which are fixed integrally to one or more pillars of the motor vehicle. To guarantee maximum safety of the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle, the pillars associated with their pillar reinforcements must then have sufficient rigidity to guarantee the preservation of the passenger compartment during a side impact and allow maximum absorption of the kinetic energy transmitted during this same impact.
[0005] For this purpose, the use of pillar reinforcements is known which have a constant thickness over their height in order to guarantee structural rigidity of the assembly formed by the pillar and its pillar reinforcement. The disadvantage of these pillar reinforcements is that they induce a substantial and unwanted increase in the weight of the motor vehicle.
[0006] The object of the present invention is to propose a new reinforcement for a motor vehicle pillar in order to address at least a large part of the above problems and to further lead to other advantages.
[0007] Another aim of the invention is to improve the resistance of motor vehicle pillars during a side impact.
[0008] Another object of the invention is to improve the safety of the occupants of the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle by reducing the risks of breakage of the motor vehicle pillar.
[0009] According to a first aspect of the invention, at least one of the aforementioned objectives is achieved with a pillar reinforcement of a motor vehicle, the pillar reinforcement extending longitudinally between a lower part intended to be fixed integrally to a lower part of the pillar of the motor vehicle and an upper part intended to be fixed integrally to an upper part of the pillar of the motor vehicle. According to the invention, at its upper part, the reinforcement comprises a terminal end in the form of a bevel formed by two lateral edges of said reinforcement.
[0010] Thus, at its upper part, the terminal end of the reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention ends in a point, a dimension of the reinforcement being smaller at said terminal end than the dimension of said reinforcement - taken in the same direction - at a distance from the terminal end. In other words, the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention comprises, at its upper part, a progressive variation in its inertia, in the direction of the terminal end of said upper part of the pillar. More particularly, the progressive variation in the inertia of the upper part of the pillar corresponds to a progressive decrease.
[0011] This advantageous arrangement of the terminal end of the upper part of the pillar reinforcement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention makes it possible to improve the mechanical resistance of the pillar with which the reinforcement is intended to be associated during a lateral impact of the motor vehicle, thus reducing the risk of rupture of the assembly formed by the pillar and its reinforcement, and improving the safety of the occupants of the passenger compartment of the motor vehicle.
[0012] The pillar reinforcement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention advantageously comprises at least one of the improvements below, the technical characteristics forming these improvements being able to be taken alone or in combination:
[0013] - according to a first variant embodiment, the bevel is formed by only one of the edges laterals of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention. In other terms, at the upper part of the pillar reinforcement, only one lateral edge of the reinforcement is oriented towards a median longitudinal axis of said reinforcement, the other lateral edge of said reinforcement extending parallel to the median longitudinal axis;
[0014] - according to a second variant embodiment, the bevel is formed by the two edges lateral edges of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention. In other words, at the upper part of the pillar reinforcement, each lateral edge of said reinforcement is oriented towards a median longitudinal axis of the reinforcement, so that the terminal end of the upper part of the pillar reinforcement takes the form of a point, symmetrical or asymmetrical;
[0015] - in particular, in the second embodiment described above, and according to a first embodiment, the bevel has an asymmetrical shape relative to the median longitudinal axis of the pillar reinforcement. In other words, a shape and / or an orientation of a first lateral edge of the pillar reinforcement taken at the level of the upper part forming the bevel is different from the shape and / or the orientation of a second lateral edge of the pillar reinforcement taken at the level of its upper part forming the bevel;
[0016] - in the second embodiment described above, and according to a second embodiment, the bevel is symmetrical with respect to the median longitudinal axis of the pillar of the motor vehicle. In other words, the first lateral edge of the pillar reinforcement and forming the bevel is symmetrical with the second lateral edge of the pillar reinforcement taken at the level of the upper part forming the bevel and with respect to the median longitudinal axis of the pillar reinforcement. The pillar reinforcement thus has a symmetrical tip shape;
[0017] - in the second embodiment of the second variant embodiment of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention, the two lateral edges of the reinforcement together form, at the upper end, a bevel angle of between 5° and 45°;
[0018] - the bevel extends over a longitudinal distance of between 10% and 50% of a longitudinal length of said reinforcement taken between its two opposite terminal ends;
[0019] - according to a first alternative compatible with any of the first or second embodiment variants set out above, at least one lateral edge - and preferably both lateral edges - of the pillar reinforcement taken at the level of the upper part forming the bevel forms a linear segment up to the terminal end of the reinforcement. According to a second alternative compatible with any of the first or second embodiment variants set out above, the at least one lateral edge - and preferably both lateral edges - of the reinforcement of pillar taken at the level of the upper part forming the bevel forms a curved segment up to the terminal end of the reinforcement;
[0020] - a lateral dimension of the bevel decreases monotonically in the direction of the terminal end of the reinforcement. In other words, a lateral dimension of the bevel, taken between the two lateral edges of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention and substantially perpendicular to the median longitudinal axis of said pillar reinforcement, decreases continuously as one approaches the terminal end of the upper part of the pillar reinforcement;
[0021] - according to a first embodiment compatible with any of the improvements mentioned above, the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention is formed by a stack of metal sheets together forming a flexible lamination. According to a second embodiment compatible with any of the improvements mentioned above, the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention is formed by a set of segments joined together along the longitudinal dimension of said reinforcement. According to a third preferred embodiment of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention and compatible with any of the improvements mentioned above, the reinforcement pillar is obtained by stamping a metal sheet;
[0022] - according to a plane transverse to said pillar reinforcement and relative to a longitudinal axis median of said pillar reinforcement, the pillar reinforcement has a U-shaped transverse profile;
[0023] - the pillar reinforcement is delimited longitudinally by two terminal ends opposite, and the pillar reinforcement is of constant thickness between its two opposite terminal ends. In the case where the pillar reinforcement has a U-shaped transverse profile, the folded metal sheet forming said transverse profile is of constant thickness between the two opposite terminal ends of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention. Alternatively or additionally, a distance taken between (i) a bearing face of the pillar reinforcement on said pillar with which it is intended to be associated and (ii) a face distal to the bearing face, taken in a direction perpendicular to said bearing face, is constant between the two opposite terminal ends of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention;
[0024] - advantageously, the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention is of constant thickness over its upper part. In the case where the pillar reinforcement has a U-shaped transverse profile, the folded metal sheet forming said transverse profile is of constant thickness over the entire upper part of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention. Alternatively or additionally, a distance taken between (i) a bearing face of the pillar reinforcement on said pillar with which it is intended to be associated and (ii) a face distal to the bearing face, taken according to a direction perpendicular to said bearing face, is constant over the entire upper part of the pillar reinforcement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention;
[0025] - more particularly still, the pillar reinforcement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention is of constant thickness along the bevel. In the case where the pillar reinforcement has a U-shaped transverse profile, the folded metal sheet forming said transverse profile is of constant thickness at the level of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention and taken at the level of its upper part forming the bevel. Alternatively or additionally, a distance taken between (i) a bearing face of the pillar reinforcement on said pillar with which it is intended to be associated and (ii) a face distal to the bearing face, taken in a direction perpendicular to said bearing face, is constant at the level of the pillar reinforcement according to the first aspect of the invention and taken at the level of its upper part forming the bevel.
[0026] According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a motor vehicle comprising (i) a chassis, (ii) a roof arch fixed integrally to the chassis by at least one pillar on each lateral side of the motor vehicle, the at least one pillar delimiting at least one front opening and one rear opening, and (iii) a pillar reinforcement in accordance with the first aspect of the invention or according to any of its improvements and fixed integrally to at least one pillar of the motor vehicle.
[0027] The motor vehicle in accordance with the second aspect of the invention advantageously comprises at least one of the improvements below, the technical characteristics forming these improvements being able to be taken alone or in combination:
[0028] - the vehicle comprises three pillars on each lateral side, the pillar reinforcement being fixed securely to the middle side pillar;
[0029] - advantageously each pillar of the motor vehicle comprises a reinforcement of pillar in accordance with the first aspect of the invention or according to any of its improvements.
[0030] Various embodiments of the invention are provided, integrating according to all of their possible combinations the different optional characteristics set out here.
[0031] Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description on the one hand, and from several exemplary embodiments given for informational and non-limiting purposes with reference to the attached schematic drawings on the other hand, in which:
[0032] [Fig-1] illustrates a schematic side view of a motor vehicle;

[0035] [Fig.4] illustrates a side view of a motor vehicle pillar equipped with the pillar reinforcement illustrated in [Fig.2].
[0036] Of course, the features, variants and different embodiments of the invention may be combined with each other, in various combinations, provided that they are not incompatible or mutually exclusive. In particular, variants of the invention may be imagined comprising only a selection of features described below in isolation from the other features described, if this selection of features is sufficient to confer a technical advantage or to differentiate the invention from the prior art.
[0037] In particular, all the variants and all the embodiments described can be combined with each other if nothing prevents this combination from a technical point of view.
[0038] In the figures, the elements common to several figures retain the same reference.
[0039] With reference to [Fig.l], a motor vehicle 1 is illustrated. The motor vehicle 1 comprises a passenger compartment 2 which is housed between front 4 and rear 3 wheel arches and behind a windshield 5. In order to guarantee the safety of the passengers of the motor vehicle 1, the passenger compartment 2 is protected by a body structure 6 configured to withstand a certain level of impacts. This body structure 6 delimits the passenger compartment both laterally, longitudinally and vertically. In particular, in order to protect the passengers present in the passenger compartment 2, the body structure 6 comprises three lateral pillars A, B, C:
[0040] - a front pillar A is located behind the front wheel arch 4 of the vehicle automobile 2 and delimits the passenger compartment 2 at its front lateral end;
[0041] - a rear pillar C is located in front of the rear wheel arch 3 of the vehicle automobile 2 and delimits the passenger compartment 2 at its rear lateral end;
[0042] - a middle pillar B is located between the front pillar A and the rear pillar C in order to strengthen the integrity of the passenger compartment in the event of a side impact.
[0043] As mentioned previously, certain pillars A, B, C of the motor vehicle 1 - and more particularly the middle pillar B - comprise zones of sudden variation in geometry leading, during a lateral impact, to a concentration of mechanical stresses at the level of these zones and, to a high risk of undesired rupture.
[0044] In order to reinforce the mechanical resistance of at least one of the pillars A, B, C of the motor vehicle 1, the invention according to its first aspect proposes to associate with at least one of said pillars A, B, C a pillar reinforcement 10 as described in FIGURES 2 to 4.
[0045] [Fig. 2] illustrates a perspective view of such a pillar reinforcement 10 according to the first aspect of the invention. The pillar reinforcement 10 extends longitudinally between a lower part 11 intended to be fixed integrally to a lower part of the pillar A, B, C of the motor vehicle 1 and an upper part 12 intended to be fixed integrally to an upper part of the pillar A, B, C of the motor vehicle 1. Furthermore, according to the invention, at its upper part 12, the reinforcement 10 comprises a terminal end 121 in the form of a bevel 125 formed by two lateral edges 122, 123 of said reinforcement 10.
[0046] Thus, as visible in [Fig.2], at its upper part 12 the terminal end 121 of the reinforcement 10 ends in a point: a lateral dimension of the reinforcement 10 is smaller at the level of the terminal end 121 compared to the dimension of said reinforcement 10 taken in the same lateral direction and at a distance from the terminal end 121. In other words, the pillar reinforcement 10 comprises, at its upper part 12, a progressive reduction in its lateral dimension as one approaches the terminal end 121. This advantageous configuration thus makes it possible to limit abrupt variations in geometry of the reinforcement 10 and, consequently, to improve the effectiveness of the mechanical reinforcement provided by the reinforcement 10 on the pillar A, B, C with which it is intended to be associated.
[0047] Advantageously, and as visible in FIGURES 2 to 4, at the level of the upper part 12 of the pillar reinforcement 10, each lateral edge 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 is oriented towards a median longitudinal axis L of the reinforcement 10, so that the terminal end 121 of the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10 takes the form of a point.
[0048] In the example illustrated in FIGURES 2 to 4, the reinforcement 10 is obtained by stamping a metal sheet in order to obtain the desired conformation for said pillar reinforcement 10. The reinforcement 10 thus obtained then comprises a longitudinal face 13 and the two lateral edges 122, 123 which are folded on either side of said longitudinal face 13.
[0049] At the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10, and more particularly at its upper end 121, the two lateral edges 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 together form a bevel angle α of between 5° and 45°. The bevel angle α thus makes it possible to adjust the desired mechanical strength for the reinforcement 10 associated with its pillar A, B, C. In other words, the exact geometry of the bevel 125 formed by the lateral edges 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 at its upper part 12, and particularly its bevel angle α, is defined by calculation and simulation of the stresses propagated at the pillar A, B, C and / or the reinforcement 10 in order to limit the accumulation of mechanical stresses at the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10.
[0050] A clever way of obtaining such a reinforcement 10 with such a bevel 125 consists of cutting the metal sheet laterally before or during its stamping in order to obtain the desired and thus calculated geometry.
[0051] In a comparable manner, the bevel 125 extends over a longitudinal distance of between 10% and 50% of a longitudinal length of said reinforcement taken between its upper terminal end 121 and a lower terminal end 111 located at the lower part 11 of the reinforcement 10. The longitudinal distance along which the bevel 125 is defined on the reinforcement 10 according to the first aspect of the invention thus makes it possible to adjust the desired mechanical strength for the reinforcement 10 associated with its pillar A, B, C. In other words, the exact geometry of the bevel 125 formed by the lateral edges 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 at its upper part 12, and particularly its longitudinal elongation, is defined by calculation and simulation of the stresses propagated at the level of the pillar A, B, C and / or of the reinforcement 10 in order to limit the accumulation of mechanical stresses at the level of the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10.
[0052] A clever combination of the bevel angle a associated with the longitudinal elongation of the bevel 125 determined by a calculation and / or a modeling of the mechanical stresses appearing in the pillar A, B, C and / or in the reinforcement 10 during a lateral impact makes it possible to define the optimal geometry of the reinforcement 10 in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
[0053] As visible in FIGURES 2 to 4, each lateral edge 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 taken at the level of its upper part 12 and forming the bevel 125 comprises several linear segments successive to each other and up to the terminal end 121 of the reinforcement 10 and / or several curved segments successive to each other and up to the terminal end 121 of the reinforcement 10.
[0054] In order to adjust the equivalent mechanical resistance of the reinforcement 10 at its upper part 12, a lateral dimension of the bevel 125 decreases monotonically towards its terminal end 121: a lateral dimension of the bevel 125, taken between the two lateral edges 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 and in a substantially perpendicular manner relative to the median longitudinal axis L, decreases continuously as one approaches the terminal end 121.
[0055] Optionally, the bevel 125 also comprises, at a proximal portion of the terminal end 121 of the reinforcement 10, a segment of constant lateral dimension, the lateral dimension of the bevel 125 being taken between the two lateral edges 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 and in a substantially perpendicular manner relative to the median longitudinal axis L.
[0056] [Fig. 3] illustrates a detailed view of the association of the reinforcement 10 in accordance with the first aspect of the invention and as previously described on a pillar A, B, C of motor vehicle 1. In particular, [Fig.3] illustrates the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10 as well as its terminal end 121. It can thus be seen that the lateral dimension of the reinforcement 10 decreases relative to the lateral dimension of the associated pillar A, B, C as it approaches the terminal end 121 of the reinforcement 10.
[0057] In [Fig.3], the dotted lines D represent the integration of a non-reinforcement according to the invention on the pillar A, B, C. It can thus be seen that the reinforcement 10 according to the invention has, at its upper part 12 and / or at the terminal end 121 of the upper part 12, a smaller hold on the pillar A, B, C, thus facilitating its integration. In addition, this advantageous configuration makes it possible to lighten the reinforcement 10, while improving the mechanical characteristics of the association of the pillar A, B, C and said reinforcement 10. In a clever manner, the weight / performance ratio is thus improved.
[0058] [Fig.4] illustrates a side view of a pillar A, B, C of a motor vehicle 1 comprising a reinforcement 10 in accordance with the invention and as described previously.
[0059] The presence of the bevel 125 on the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10, as well as its particular geometry as described previously, thus lead to the formation of large openings 126, 127 on the lateral edges 122, 123. These large openings are characteristic of the invention and of the presence of the bevel 125, the lateral dimension of which is progressively reduced as one approaches the terminal end 121 of the upper part 12 of the reinforcement 10 according to the invention according to its first aspect.
[0060] In order to be able to fulfill its role of mechanical reinforcement, the reinforcement 10 according to the invention is fixed integrally to the pillar A, B, C with which it is associated by any known fixing means. More particularly, the reinforcement 10 is fixed by welding to the corresponding pillar A, B, C. Advantageously, a plurality of welding points are provided over the entire height of the reinforcement 10 and / or of the pillar A, B, C in order to promote the mechanical coupling between them and to improve the mechanical resistance of the assembly thus formed.
[0061] The invention according to its first aspect advantageously finds an application in a motor vehicle 1 comprising a body structure 6 comprising:
[0062] - a chassis;
[0063] - a roof arch fixed securely to the chassis by at least one pillar A, B, C on each lateral side of the motor vehicle 1, the at least one pillar A, B, C delimiting at least one front opening and one rear opening; and
[0064] - a pillar reinforcement 10 as described previously and fixed securely on the at least one pillar A, B, C of the motor vehicle 1, and preferably on the middle pillar B.
[0065] In summary, the invention relates to a reinforcement 10 for a pillar A, B, C of a motor vehicle 1. The reinforcement 10 comprises at its upper part 12 a particular shape called a bevel 125: the lateral edges 122, 123 of the reinforcement 10 gradually converge towards each other as one approaches the terminal end 121 of the reinforcement 10 on its upper part 12. Thus, the reinforcement 10 according to the invention has a lateral dimension which gradually decreases as one approaches its upper terminal end 121, in order to propose a progressive variation in the inertia of said reinforcement 10. This results in an improvement in the mechanical performance of the reinforcement and a reduction in the risk of rupture at its upper part 12 in the event of a lateral impact. The invention also relates to a motor vehicle in which at least one of the pillars A, B, C is reinforced by a reinforcement 10 according to the invention.
[0066] Of course, the invention is not limited to the examples which have just been described and numerous adjustments can be made to these examples without departing from the scope of the invention. In particular, the different characteristics, forms, variants and embodiments of the invention can be associated with each other in various combinations insofar as they are not incompatible or mutually exclusive. In particular, all the variants and embodiments described above can be combined with each other.
