[0018] One or more methodologies or technologies are described that allow users to apply treatment formulations to human hair and scalp tissue. The following description provides representative examples that generally relate to hair and scalp treatment delivery systems and devices and formulation cartridges for them. In one embodiment, it is advantageous for the treatment formulation to be applied to a targeted portion of the hair or scalp tissue. In one embodiment, the application of a treatment formulation to a portion of the hair near the scalp is desired, for example, when applying a hair dye to the roots during a color maintenance procedure. In another example, one approach requires applying a scalp treatment formulation directly to the scalp tissue, while minimizing contact with the hair.
[0019] Existing systems for applying hair and scalp treatment formulations have been widely used. For example, hair coloring kits are commonly used to alter the appearance of hair color or to blend gray hair, among other uses. Existing hair coloring systems have several drawbacks, including difficulty of use, a time-consuming process, uneven coverage, unpredictable results, excessive mess, etc. In one aspect, existing hair coloring systems may be ineffective at blending and coloring hair roots after new hair segments have grown from the scalp, where the natural hair color differs from the rest of the dyed hair. The present di- The outreach aims to address these needs and others.
[0020] In some embodiments, the hair coloring formulation includes at least one dye and a separate developer, which are mixed in controlled proportions. However, in this disclosure, the term "formulation" is not limited to the dye and developer. As used herein, the term "formulation" generally refers to any of the dye, developer, formulation, fluid, or any mixture thereof. In this disclosure, the term "formulation" includes: a permanent hair dye; a semi-permanent hair dye; a developer; a conditioner; a hair growth treatment, such as minoxidil manufactured under the trade name ROGAINE®; a protein hair treatment; a disulfide bond repair hair treatment; a fluid hair treatment; a fluid scalp treatment; and the like.
[0021] The embodiments of this disclosure are configured to apply the formulation to targeted areas of the hair and scalp tissue. Although any of the aforementioned formulations are suitable for application using the embodiments described herein, this disclosure generally refers to a hair coloring formulation such as the example treatment formulation applied by the systems and devices described below. However, it will be appreciated that any of the systems, devices, cartridges, and methods can be used with any of the aforementioned formulations.
[0022] Figure 1 illustrates a representative formulation dispensing system 100 according to this disclosure. The formulation dispensing system 100 includes several different features, including a formulation product line 102, a formulation dispensing device 104, and an optional application 106, which together enable a personalized user experience.
[0023] The formulation product line 102 includes various formulations 108, each stored in the same type of (common) formulation cartridge 110, which is configured for use with the formulation dispensing device 104. Cartridges of the common formulation cartridge type are generally configured to be inserted into a cartridge cavity of a reusable handle of the formulation dispensing device. For example, in some embodiments, the formulation cartridges and the cleaning cartridges have a common cross-sectional shape and dimensions. In addition, some embodiments of the common formulation cartridge type have a common number and arrangement of outlet nozzles.
[0024] Thus, the common formulation cartridge type 110 allows a consumer to use many different formulations in a single formulation delivery device 104. A representative type of formulation cartridge 110 is described below in Figures 8A to 10, and a representative cleaning cartridge 112 is described in [Fig. 12].
[0025] In a representative embodiment, the formulation product line 102 includes a hair coloring formulation and a scalp treatment formulation. In other representative embodiments, the formulation product line 102 comprises at least two, three, four, five, six, seven, or eight of the following different formulations, each of them being stored in the same type of formulation cartridge 110: a permanent hair dye and developer; a semi-permanent hair dye and developer; a shampoo; a conditioner; a hair growth treatment such as minoxidil; a protein hair treatment; a disulfide bond repair hair treatment; or a fluid scalp treatment. In even more representative embodiments, the formulation product line 102 includes any of the above combinations, in addition to an optional cleaning cartridge 112 of the same type as formulation cartridge 110.
[0026] The formulation cartridge 110 has an elongated shape and dimensions configured for insertion into a handle of the formulation dispensing device 104, particularly into a cartridge cavity in the handle. In some embodiments of the formulation dispensing system 100, the elongated outer casing has a different construction between the formulation cartridges 110 containing the formulation and the cleaning cartridge 112, but with a common shape and dimensions. For example, in some embodiments, the formulation cartridges 110 containing the formulation have the construction of the partially recyclable embodiment shown in Figures 8A to 10, while the cleaning cartridge 112 has a similar shape and dimensions, but different materials and components.
[0027] Another feature of the formulation cartridge type 110 is a plurality of liquid outlet nozzles, which are sized and positioned at a distal (front) end of the formulation cartridge 110 in a configuration that fluidly connects to a corresponding plurality of liquid inlets (e.g., the first formulation inlets). In some embodiments, the liquid outlet nozzles are valves of formulation containers (e.g., pouches or packets) arranged in the formulation cartridge 110.
[0028] A representative type of formulation cartridge 110, which is configured to be inserted into the formulation delivery device 104 and to store a first formulation and a second formulation, is described below in Figures 8A to 10.
[0029] The cleaning cartridge 112, which is of the common formulation cartridge type 110 (i.e., which has a common external dimension and a plurality of liquid outlet nozzles), allows a user to clean the formulation delivery device 104 by executing a cleaning routine that forces a cleaning liquid (e.g., water) from the cleaning cartridge 112 through the fluid lines of the formulation delivery device 104, thereby removing the residual formulation from the formulation delivery device 104. Advantageously, the cleaning cartridge 112 and the cleaning routine allow a significant portion of the formulation delivery device 104 to be reused for different formulations, thereby reducing waste and costs.
[0030] The cleaning cartridge 112 includes a refillable cleaning fluid reservoir located inside the outer housing, which is fluidly connected to the plurality of outlet nozzles. Thus, a user can fill the cleaning fluid reservoir with a cleaning fluid such as water, run a number of cleaning routines on the formulation delivery device 104, and refill the cleaning fluid reservoir.
[0031] The formulation delivery device 104 is a connected electromechanical device that interacts with the user, with the formulation cartridges 110, and optionally with the application 106 to provide a personalized user experience. A representative formulation delivery device and its subsystems are described below with reference to Figures 4 to 7.
[0032] In general, the formulation delivery device 104 comprises a reusable handle configured to receive the formulation cartridge type 110, as well as a formulation dispensing assembly and a control device, both being disposed within the reusable handle. The formulation dispensing assembly comprises at least one fluid conduit fluidly connected to a motorized pump and a set of reciprocating nozzles, and is configured to draw the formulation or cleaning fluid from the formulation cartridge 110 and to dispense it through the reciprocating nozzles onto a portion of a user's hair, scalp, or body.
[0033] The control device is configured to switch between at least one cleaning routine and one formulation routine in response to one or more inputs indicating that the cleaning cartridge or formulation cartridge is inserted into the reusable handle. The control device communicates with an encryption chip reader of a cartridge authentication interface in the reusable handle to read an encryption chip disposed on the formulation cartridge 110, in order to authenticate which formulation 108 is stored in the cartridge. The formulation 110 is inserted into the reusable handle at a specific time. In some embodiments, the control device also authenticates when the cleaning cartridge 112 is inserted into the reusable handle. Based on the formulation 108 or the authenticated cleaning cartridge 112, the control device causes the formulation dispensing device 104 to execute a formulation routine that dispenses the authenticated formulation from the formulation cartridge through the formulation dispensing assembly. Based on the authenticated cleaning cartridge 112, the control device also causes the formulation dispensing device 104 to execute a cleaning routine that dispenses the cleaning liquid through the formulation dispensing assembly.
[0034] The application 106 includes logic configured to operate on a non-transient, machine-readable storage medium and includes modules that personalize the user experience, provide useful analytics, and enable e-commerce. The application 106 runs on a mobile device 114, such as a smartphone, tablet, or similar device, and interacts with a user (e.g., an end user or a hair salon technician) to provide actionable information through a plurality of modules, which are described below in relation to [Fig. 3]. In some embodiments, the application 106 communicates with the formulation delivery device 104 and a network 116, such as a mobile network, a cloud-based enterprise network, a local area network, or similar.
[0035] Together, the formulation product line 102, the formulation dispensing device 104, and the application 106 provide an enhanced and personalized user experience. Each of the preceding elements of the formulation dispensing system 100 will now be described in detail.
[0036] Figure 2 shows a schematic overview of a representative formulation 200 delivery device, to facilitate understanding of some of its representative features. The formulation 200 delivery device should be understood as having the same features as the formulation 104 delivery device of Figure 1.
[0037] The formulation delivery device 200 includes a reusable handle 202 having a hollow, elongated portion configured to reversibly receive the common formulation cartridge type (in particular the cleaning cartridge 112). The reusable handle 202 also houses a number of subassemblies, including a control device 204, which includes a processor 206 and a data store 208 storing a number of modules (described below), a cartridge authentication interface 210, a power supply 212, a formulation dispensing assembly 214, and a position sensor 216. optional.
[0038] The power supply 212 is, in some embodiments, a direct current (DC) power supply, such as a rechargeable battery (for example, a lithium-ion battery) configured to be charged by being plugged into a standard household AC outlet. In other embodiments, the power supply 212 is an alternating current (AC) power supply, such as a standard household AC outlet that uses a power cord (not shown) to provide electrical power to the formulation delivery device 200.
[0039] The formulation delivery assembly 214 delivers a formulation and / or a cleansing liquid from the formulation cartridge 110 to a user's scalp or hair. In one embodiment, the formulation delivery assembly 214 includes: a first fluid conduit fluidly connected to a first formulation inlet (which couples to a first liquid outlet nozzle of the formulation cartridge 110), a second fluid conduit fluidly connected to a second formulation inlet (which couples to a second liquid outlet nozzle of the formulation cartridge 110), a motor 218, a pump 220 driven by the motor 218, and a set of reciprocating nozzles 222 that is also driven by the motor 218.
[0040] The cartridge authentication interface 210 is an RFID reader, a near field reader, or similar, which is positioned in the reusable handle 202 so that when the formulation cartridge 110 is inserted into it, the cartridge authentication interface 210 reads an encryption chip disposed on the formulation cartridge 224, in order to authenticate the formulation cartridge in relation to the formulation routine module 226 described below.
[0041] The optional position sensor 216 includes one or more sensors that, individually or collectively, help determine the position and orientation of the formulation delivery device 200 relative to a user's scalp or hair. In some embodiments, the position sensor 216 includes one or more accelerometers, touch sensors (e.g., capacitive touch sensors), proximity sensors (e.g., optical proximity sensors), or similar devices. The signals transmitted by the position sensor 216 are used by the control device 204, and some of its modules, to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the formulation application to a user's hair or scalp.
[0042] The control device 204 is operationally connected (e.g., electrically connected) to the power supply 212, the cartridge authentication interface 210, the formulation dispensing assembly 214, and the optional position sensor 216. The control device 204 includes the a processor 206 (for example, a general-purpose processing unit, a graphics processing unit, or an application-specific integrated circuit), a data store 926 (a machine-readable tangible storage medium), and a plurality of modules implemented as software logic (for example, executable software code), firmware logic, hardware logic, or various combinations thereof. In some embodiments, the control device 204 includes a transceiver that transmits signals from any of the modules discussed below to the mobile device and receives signals transmitted by the mobile device.
[0043] In certain embodiments, the control device 204 includes a communication interface having circuitry configured to allow communication with the formulation dispensing system, including the formulation cartridge 224 (an encryption chip), the cleaning cartridge 228, the cartridge authentication interface 210, a mobile device and an application stored on it, and / or another network element via the Internet, a cellular network, an RF network, a personal area network (PAN), a local area network, a wide area network, or another network. Accordingly, the communication interface can be configured to communicate using wireless protocols (e.g., Wi-Fi®, WiMAX®, Bluetooth®, Zigbee®, cellular, infrared, near-field, etc.) and / or wired protocols (universal serial bus or other serial communications such as RS-216, RJ-45, etc., parallel communication bus).In some embodiments, the communication interface includes circuitry configured to initiate a discovery protocol that allows the control device 204 and another network element (for example, the formulation cartridge 110) to mutually identify each other and exchange control information (for example, the identity of the formulation stored in the formulation cartridge 110). In one embodiment, the communication interface has circuitry configured for a discovery protocol and for negotiating one or more pre-shared keys.
[0044] The data store 208 is a machine-readable tangible storage medium that includes a mechanism that stores information in a non-transient form accessible by a machine (e.g., the processor 206 or the mobile device 114). For example, a machine-readable storage medium includes recordable / non-recordable media (e.g., read-only memory (ROM), random-access memory (RAM), magnetic disk storage media, optical storage media, flash memory devices, etc.).
[0045] The modules described below are representative and not limiting. Consequently, some embodiments of the control device 204 include additional modules, while other embodiments include fewer modules.
[0046] The cartridge authentication module 230 communicates with the interface The cartridge authentication interface 210 is used to authenticate any formulation cartridge 224 or cleaning cartridge 228 that is inserted into the reusable handle 202. For example, when the formulation cartridge 224 is inserted into the reusable handle 202, the cartridge authentication interface 210 reads the encrypted information from an encryption chip located on the formulation cartridge 224. If the cartridge authentication interface 210 successfully reads the encrypted information from the encryption chip, then the cartridge authentication module 230 unlocks the formulation dispensing device 200, for example, the formulation routine module 226. If, however, the cartridge authentication interface 210 cannot successfully authenticate the formulation cartridge inserted into the reusable handle 202, then it does not unlock the formulation dispensing device 200.For example, if the formulation cartridge is a counterfeit cartridge or another cartridge containing an inferior formulation, then the 230 cartridge authentication module does not unlock the functionality of the 200 formulation dispensing device. In this way, the 230 cartridge authentication module advantageously prevents the user from suffering harm or having a bad experience.
[0047] In certain embodiments, the cartridge authentication module 230 is configured to read additional information from the encryption chip, including one or more of the following: a formulation identifier, a starting formulation quantity, a formulation expiration date, or a formulation production date. In such embodiments, the cartridge authentication module 230 transmits the additional information to other modules for subsequent use.
[0048] The formulation routine module 226 stores a plurality of formulation routines for different formulations (for example, hair care formulation routines), and causes the formulation distribution assembly 214 to execute one or more formulation routines, based on the formulation cartridge 224 authenticated by the cartridge authentication module 230. A formulation routine distributes the formulation 108 authenticated from the formulation cartridge 224 through the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222.For example, a hair care formulation routine dispenses one or more hair care formulations from the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222, for a specific dispensing time, at a specific pump liquid flow rate, nozzle reciprocating frequency and / or reciprocating amplitude of the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222, and / or other device operating parameter specified by the formulation routine stored in the formulation routine module 226. In this way, the dispensing device. formulation 200 adjusts one or more device operating parameters based on the specific formulation stored in the authenticated formulation cartridge 224 inserted into the formulation delivery device, for more effective treatment of hair and scalp.
[0049] Additional examples are now provided to describe how the formulation routine module 226 is adjusted for different formulations. One or more of the following features can be combined in any embodiment. In some embodiments, the hair care formulation routine modulates the flow rate of the formulation(s) from the formulation cartridge 224, for example, by adjusting the speed of the motor 218. For example, in some embodiments, the flow rate of the formulation(s) is modulated (for example, by varying the speed of the motor 218) according to the formulation(s) in the formulation cartridge 224 having one or more foam attributes. Examples of foam attributes include, among others, foam density, foam duration / longevity, foam volume, and others. In some embodiments, the flow rate of the formulation(s) is modulated (for example, by varying the speed of the motor 218) based on one or more inputs indicating the viscosity of the formulation(s) in the formulation cartridge 224. In some embodiments, the flow rate of the formulation(s) is modulated (for example, by varying the speed of the motor 218) based on one or more inputs indicating the miscibility ratio of the components of the formulation(s) in the formulation cartridge 224. In some embodiments, the flow rate of the formulation(s) is modulated (for example, by varying the speed of the motor 218) based on one or more inputs indicating the shear rate of the formulation(s) in the formulation cartridge 224.In some embodiments, the flow rate of the formulation(s) is modulated (for example, the speed of the motor 218 is varied) based on one or more indicative inputs of a viscosity and one or more indicative inputs of a shear rate of the formulation(s) in the formulation cartridge 224. In some embodiments, the cartridge authentication module 230 identifies one or more of the preceding formulation properties during the authentication of the formulation cartridge 224.
[0050] In some embodiments, the formulation routine module 226 modulates the reciprocating speed of the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222 (for example, by varying the speed of the motor 218) based on one or more inputs indicating scalp sensitivity, for example, which can be determined from one or more impedance sensors on the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222 and / or provided by the user via an application as described below. In some embodiments, the module The formulation routine 226 modulates the reciprocating speed of the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222 based on one or more inputs indicating a change in an inertial property of the formulation dispensing assembly 214 in use. In some embodiments, the dispensing ratio of a first formulation to a second formulation in the formulation cartridge 224 is modulated, for example, based on one or more inputs indicating the miscibility of the components.
[0051] In certain embodiments, the formulation routine module 226 determines, based on the dispensing time of the verified formulation, a dispensing volume of the verified formulation from the formulation cartridge through the formulation dispensing assembly. Based on the dispensing time and / or the dispensing volume, the formulation routine module 226 brings a visual indicator on the reusable handle 202 to signal a quantity of formulation remaining. This helps the user anticipate when the formulation cartridge will need to be replaced and prompts them to use the e-commerce module of the connected application to conveniently purchase additional formulation cartridges.
[0052] The cleaning routine module 232 stores a cleaning routine and causes the formulation dispensing assembly 214 to execute the cleaning routine after the cleaning cartridge 228 (which has a reservoir filled with a cleaning fluid) is inserted into the reusable handle 202 and after it has been authenticated by the cartridge authentication module 230. The cleaning routine dispenses the cleaning fluid from the authenticated cleaning cartridge 228 through the reciprocating nozzle assembly 222 (for example, for a predetermined time and at a predetermined flow rate) in order to flush out any residual formulation from the formulation dispensing assembly 214. The cleaning routine is useful, for example, after using one formulation in the formulation dispensing device 200, but before using a second, different formulation. In some embodiments, the cleaning routine operates pump 220 at a higher flow rate than one or more (or all) of the formulation routines stored by the formulation routine module 226, in order to remove any residual formulation.
[0053] In certain embodiments, the control device 204 is configured to switch between at least one cleaning routine (provided by the cleaning routine module 232) and a formulation routine (provided by the formulation routine module 226) in response to one or more inputs indicating that the cleaning cartridge or formulation cartridge is inserted into the reusable handle. Representative inputs include an authentication of the formulation cartridge or cleaning cartridge provided by the cartridge authentication module 230.
[0054] According to one method of this disclosure, a method for cleaning any of the formulation delivery devices includes inserting the cleaning cartridge, at least partially filled with cleaning fluid, into the reusable handle of the formulation delivery device, and performing the cleaning routine until the cleaning fluid dispensed by the formulation dispensing assembly is clear.
[0055] The power management module 234 supplies power from the power supply 212 to one or more of the control device 204, the cartridge authentication interface 210, the formulation dispensing assembly 214, or the position sensor 216. In addition, the power management module 234 conserves available power resources (e.g., conserves battery life) by switching the formulation dispensing device 104 between a standby state (a passive state) and a wake-up state (an active state).
[0056] The sleep / wake-up module 236 manages whether the formulation dispensing device 200 is in a wake-up or sleep state. The formulation dispensing device 200 is in a sleep state by default, whereby little or no power is supplied by the power supply 212 to the formulation distribution assembly 214, the cartridge authentication interface 210, and / or the control device 204. In the sleep state, the formulation dispensing device 200 is unable to perform a formulation routine or a cleaning routine. In the wake-up state, by comparison, the control device 204, the cartridge authentication interface 210, the formulation distribution assembly 214, and the position sensor 216 are sufficiently powered for the formulation dispensing device 104 to be able to perform one or more formulation routines or cleaning routines. In some embodiments, the formulation dispensing device 104 is "awakened," i.e., brought from the standby state to the awake state, by: pressing a button located on the reusable handle 202, or by inserting a formulation cartridge 224 or a cleaning cartridge 228 into the reusable handle 202. In some embodiments, the formulation dispensing device 200 returns to the standby state after a predetermined period of inactivity (for example, 120 seconds of inactivity).
[0057] The position module 238 uses a position signal provided by the position sensor 216 to determine the position of the formulation delivery device 200. This position information is then provided to the formulation routine module 226 to facilitate the execution of a formulation routine, for example, a calibration routine. In some embodiments, the position module 238 provides the position signal to an application stored on a mobile device (via the transceiver), for example, to allow the execution of a calibration routine (described below) and / or to allow the application to display a correct application indication based on the position signal.
[0058] Figure 3 shows a schematic overview of a representative application 300, which is to be understood as having all the features of application 106 in Figure 1 and is compatible with all formulation delivery systems and formulation delivery devices of this disclosure. As indicated above, application 300 is configured to operate on a device, for example, a mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet. By way of representative example, application 300 is described in the context of a mobile device 302 connected to a network 304; however, this is not limiting.
[0059] The mobile device 302 includes a display 306 (for example, an LED or LCD display), a processor 308, and a data store 310 storing a plurality of modules. The terms "processor," "data store," and "module" have the same meaning as described above with respect to the control device 204, and as used below with respect to representative formulation delivery devices.
[0060] Each module described below presents one or more user interfaces on the display 306. The display 306 is a touchscreen display configured to receive user input. Consequently, for each module, the user interface presented on the display 306 is configured both to display information and to receive user input.
[0061] Application 300 includes a number of modules that personalize the user experience, including a user profile module 312 and a user routine module 314. The modules described below are representative and not exhaustive. Consequently, some embodiments of Application 300 include additional modules, while other embodiments include fewer modules.
[0062] The user profile module 312 creates one or more profiles for users of the formulation dispensing device 104. These profiles are provided as input to other modules, for example, the user routine module 314 and the e-commerce module 316. Accordingly, the user profile module 312 provides one or more user interfaces that prompt a user to provide one or more user profile entries, including: hair color, hair type (e.g., curly, straight), colored / uncolored status, ethnicity, hair condition (e.g., damaged), scalp condition (e.g., itchy), and / or age. The user profile module 312 accepts and stores the user profile entries.
[0063] In some embodiments, the user profile module 312 communicates with the user routine module 314 by providing one or more of the user profile inputs, or an entire user profile, to the user routine module 314. The user routine module 314 then uses one or more of the user profile inputs to create one or more user-specific routines and / or to select one or more tutorials to be presented on the display 306.
[0064] In some embodiments, the user profile module 312 communicates with the formulation delivery device 104. For example, in some embodiments, the user profile module 312 sets at least one device operating parameter of a formulation routine (for example, flow rate, dispensing time, reciprocating motion amplitude or reciprocating motion frequency) generated by the formulation routine module on the basis of one or more of the user profile inputs.
[0065] The user routine module 314 helps the user to effectively use the connected formulation delivery device by formulating, in certain embodiments, one or more user-specific routines for each user based on one or more user profile entries. In other words, the user routine module 314 creates a new formulation routine (rather than selecting a predetermined formulation routine) in order to effectively treat one or more conditions identified by the user profile entries or to achieve one or more objectives identified by the user profile entries. As a representative example, when user input indicates that the user's hair is both colored and damaged, the user routine module 314 creates a user-specific routine that selects an appropriate hair repair formulation and shampoo formulation for the user's hair color from the formulation product line, and displays the user-specific routine (e.g., as instructions) to use the selected hair repair formulation and shampoo at a specified interval to improve the user's hair health.
[0066] In addition, the user routine module 314 displays on the display 306: a) one or more passive tutorials for formulation routines, cleaning routines and / or calibration routines; and / or one or more sets of active instructions that provide instructions to the user when the user operates the formulation delivery device.
[0067] In some embodiments, the user routine module 314 receives one or more user profile inputs, or an entire user profile, from the user profile module 312, and then displays a passive tutorial (e.g., a pre-recorded instructional video) that is targeted to the user based on the inputs of user profile received or from the user profile. As an example, the user routine module 314 receives a user profile input from the user profile module 312 indicating that the user has colored hair, and displays a tutorial on the display 306 showing the user how to use the formulation delivery device to color the user's hair.
[0068] In certain embodiments, the user routine module 314 receives one or more position signals from the position sensor of the formulation dispensing device via the control device. Based on the received position signals, the user routine module 314 provides instructions to the user on how to use the formulation dispensing device when the user operates the device (for example, instructions to move the formulation dispensing device in a particular direction, at a particular speed, in a particular pattern, towards a particular spatial boundary). As an example, the user routine module 314 receives a position signal from the position sensor indicating that the formulation delivery device is positioned at the user's left temple; based on this received position signal, the user routine module 314 displays a video instructing the user to apply a scalp treatment formulation by moving the formulation delivery device from the left temple to the right temple while dispensing the scalp treatment formulation.
[0069] In some embodiments, the user routine module 314 receives a position signal from the formulation delivery device and displays a correct application indication based on the position signal.
[0070] The calibration module 318 assists the user in calibrating the formulation dispensing device, thereby increasing the efficiency of the formulation routines performed by the formulation dispensing device. In some embodiments, the calibration module 318 displays a passive tutorial (for example, a prerecorded instructional video) that provides instructions to the user on how to perform a calibration routine. In some embodiments, the calibration module 318 provides one or more sets of active instructions that provide instructions on how to use and perform the calibration routine when the user operates the formulation dispensing device and when the calibration module 318 receives position signals from the formulation dispensing device.
[0071] According to a representative calibration routine, the calibration module 318 instructs the user to position the formulation delivery device at a plurality of calibration locations on a portion of the user's body, for example, in a particular order (e.g., a left temple, then a right temple). right, then a front hair contour line, then a back hair contour line). The user then moves the formulation delivery device to each of the calibration locations, indicating by pressing a button on the formulation delivery device or by other action when the formulation delivery device is at the specified calibration location, and / or when the user has moved the formulation delivery device from one calibration location to another.
[0072] Based on the position signals received from the position sensor of the formulation dispensing device, the calibration module 318 and / or the formulation dispensing device record the calibration locations. Then, the calibration module 318 and / or the formulation dispensing device set one or more user-specific routines based on the recorded calibration locations. In some embodiments, this setting step includes setting a spatial limit and / or a time duration for one or more formulation routines stored in the formulation routine module.
[0073] The 320 manual adjustment module allows a user to manually adjust one or more operating parameters of the formulation delivery device (e.g., flow rate, dispensing time, reciprocating motion amplitude, or reciprocating motion frequency), thereby enabling greater control of the formulation delivery device and a more personalized user experience. Accordingly, the 320 manual adjustment module features a user interface with one or more virtual, user-adjustable sliding scales, switches, editable value fields, and similar elements, which are configured to receive one or more user-defined operating parameter inputs. The manual adjustment module 320 receives the operating parameter inputs and transmits said operating parameter inputs to the formulation delivery device (e.g., the formulation routine module), which adjusts the corresponding device operating parameter based on the corresponding operating parameter input (e.g., to match the operating parameter input).
[0074] The analysis module 322 receives device operating parameters (for example, from the formulation dispensing device) and calculates useful analyses, which the analysis module 322 then provides to the user via the user interface and / or to a third party via the network 304. Representative analyses include: a formulation usage model, a formulation purchase prediction, and diagnostics of the formulation dispensing device. In some embodiments, the analysis module 322 communicates with the network 304 (for example, an analytics platform located on one or more cloud servers) to retrieve in- additional training and / or to calculate said analyses.
[0075] In some embodiments, the formulation delivery device includes a position sensor that sends a position signal to the control device, and a transceiver that sends the position signal to the mobile device. The formulation delivery device transmits the position signal to the analysis module 322, which retrieves a user suggestion from an analytical platform on the network 116 based on the received position signal and displays the user suggestion.
[0076] The formula creation module 324 allows a user to create a custom formula based on the user's selection of one or more formulation inputs, which correspond to one or more desired results (for example, the desired hair color), one or more formulation inputs (for example, an indication that the user's hair is damaged), and / or one or more of the user profile inputs provided to the user profile module 312. Accordingly, the formula creation module 324 is configured to receive one or more user profile inputs from the user profile module 312, and to formulate a custom formulation based on these inputs.
[0077] To facilitate the creation of the user's custom formulation, the 324 formula creation module provides a user interface with one or more virtual, user-adjustable sliding scales, switches, editable value fields, and similar features, corresponding to each formulation input. In some embodiments, the 324 formula creation module communicates with the 304 network (for example, a formulation database located on one or more cloud servers) to retrieve additional information and / or to formulate said custom formulation.
[0078] The e-commerce module 316 has a purchasing interface that allows a user to purchase (in particular on a one-time or subscription basis) products related to the formulation dispensing device. In some embodiments, the e-commerce module 316 retrieves one or more customized formulations from the formula creation module 324 (or its components) and presents on the purchasing interface an option for the user to purchase one or more formulation cartridges 110 containing the customized formulation. In some embodiments, the e-commerce module 316 retrieves one or more user profile entries and / or user-specific routine entries from the user profile module 312 and presents on the purchase interface an option for the user to purchase one or more formulation cartridges containing formulations that target the user profile entries (for example, when the user entries indicate damaged hair, a . formulation cartridge containing a hair repair formulation). In some embodiments, the e-commerce module 316 presents on the purchase interface an option to purchase the cleaning cartridge 112 or the formulation dispensing device 104 and / or their components. This purchase interface and these purchase options may be based on a formulation usage model and / or a formulation purchase prediction retrieved from the analysis module 322.
[0079] Figures 4 and 5 show a representative formulation dispensing device 400, and its components, according to one embodiment of this disclosure. The formulation dispensing device 400 is configured to receive a type of formulation cartridge 402 (including a cleaning cartridge of the same type). An embodiment of a formulation cartridge of the formulation cartridge type 402 is described below in detail with reference to Figures 8A to 10; the formulation cartridge 402 shown in [Fig. 4] is to be understood as having the same features as those described therein. Some embodiments of the formulation dispensing device 400 include the formulation cartridge 402 and / or an optional flow adapter 404.
[0080] The formulation dispensing device 400 includes a reusable handle 406 made of ABS plastic or a similar rigid polymer or other material, and in some embodiments, it is an assembly formed of a plurality of shells configured to be joined together with fasteners such as snap fasteners, screws, or the like. The reusable handle 406 has a hollow, elongated gripping portion in which is a cartridge cavity sized to receive formulation cartridge type 02. In some embodiments, the cavity includes keying features that facilitate the correct insertion of formulation cartridge type 402.For example, some embodiments include a cartridge interface 408 disposed in the opening and having a flat receiving surface which serves as an interface with a corresponding receiving surface of the formulation cartridge 402 when the latter is properly inserted into the opening.
[0081] The reusable handle 406 houses a formulation dispensing assembly 410 (described below with reference to Figures 5 to 7), in addition to a control device 412. The formulation dispensing assembly 410 and the control device 412 have the same features as the formulation dispensing assembly 214 and the control device 204 of [Fig. 2], respectively. An embodiment of a formulation dispensing assembly is described in detail below with reference to Figures 6 and 7; the formulation dispensing assembly 410 shown in [Fig. 4] is to be understood as having the same features as those described therein.
[0082] The formulation dispensing assembly 410 dispenses a formulation or cleaning liquid from the formulation cartridge 402, and includes a pump, fluid lines, a mixing chamber, and a reciprocating nozzle assembly 414 (described below) with nozzles that extend away from the front end of the reusable handle 406 between a plurality of optional spacer portions 416. The reciprocating nozzle assembly 414 includes a plurality of ring nozzles that perform a reciprocating back-and-forth motion along a groove in the reusable handle 406 while dispensing a formulation onto a user's skin or hair.In some embodiments, the reciprocating nozzle assembly 414 performs a reciprocating motion at a reciprocating motion amplitude of 7.0 to 12.0 mm (for example, 8.0 mm to 11.0 mm, or 9.0 to 10.0 mm) and / or at a reciprocating motion frequency of 5.0 Hz to 10.0 Hz (for example, 6.0 Hz to 9.0 Hz, 6.0 Hz to 8.0 Hz), which are adjustable by the formulation routine module, the cleaning routine module, the user routine module, the manual adjustment module, or another module. For example, in some embodiments, the reciprocating motion frequency is varied by varying the speed of a motor driving the pump and the reciprocating nozzle assembly 414.
[0083] As shown in [Fig.5], the formulation cartridge 402 has one or more formulation containers (e.g. pouches or packets) 418 arranged inside, each of them having an outlet nozzle 420 protruding through a distal (front) end of the formulation cartridge 402 in a configuration that connects fluidly to a corresponding formulation inlet 422 of the formulation dispensing assembly 410 when the formulation cartridge 402 is fully inserted into the cartridge cavity 424.
[0084] A button 426 located on the reusable handle 406 and electrically connected to the control device 412 activates the features of the formulation dispensing device 400 described above. In some embodiments, pressing the button 426 activates the features of any of the modules described above in [Fig. 2]. For example, in some embodiments, pressing the button 426 activates a sleep / wake module stored in the control device 412, thus waking the formulation dispensing device 400 from a sleep state to a wake state. In some embodiments, pressing the button 426 while a formulation cartridge is inserted in the reusable handle 406 activates a formulation routine module stored in the control device 412, thus initiating a formulation routine.
[0085] In certain embodiments, pressing the button 426 while a cleaning cartridge is inserted into the reusable handle 406 activates a routine module The cleaning information stored in the control unit 412 initiates a cleaning routine. Visual indicators 428 (e.g., LEDs) arranged along the reusable handle 406 indicate one or more of the remaining formulation quantity or remaining battery life, for example, based on a dispensing time determined by the formulation routine module of the control unit. Some embodiments include additional buttons and / or a different number of visual indicators 428 with different functions, and the illustrated embodiment is not limiting. In some embodiments, the visual indicator 428 is a multi-segment LED, with each segment corresponding to an equal proportion of the formulation remaining in the formulation cartridge.
[0086] The control device 412 includes logic (stored in a data store thereof) which, when executed by a processor of the control device 412, causes a cartridge authentication interface 430 disposed in the reusable handle 406 (for example, an RFID reader) to read an encryption chip 432 on the formulation cartridge 402 in order to authenticate the formulation cartridge 402. The encryption chip 432 stores at least one of the formulation cartridge 402's, formulation identification, starting formulation quantity, formulation expiration date, or formulation production date.
[0087] The control device 412 also includes logic which, when executed, causes the formulation delivery device to execute, on the basis of the authentication of the formulation cartridge 402, a formulation routine which dispenses a mixed formulation (of the first formulation and the second formulation) from the formulation cartridge 402 through the formulation distribution assembly. For example, the formulation delivery device authenticates the first and second formulations after (or upon) the insertion of a formulation cartridge into the reusable handle, and then, in response to the pressing of a button on the reusable handle, executes a formulation routine that causes the formulation dispensing assembly 410 to continuously or continuously mix the first and second formulations, and dispense them from the reciprocating nozzle assembly at one or more of the following predetermined operating parameters of the device as long as the button is pressed: a formulation flow rate, a reciprocating frequency, or a reciprocating amplitude.
[0088] In certain embodiments, the control device 412 also includes logic which, when executed, causes the formulation dispensing device to perform, based on the authentication of a cleaning cartridge inserted into the reusable handle, a cleaning routine which distributes a cleaning liquid through the formulation dispensing assembly. By For example, the formulation delivery device authenticates a cleaning cartridge inserted into the reusable handle, and then, in response to a button being pressed on the reusable handle, performs a cleaning routine that causes the formulation dispensing assembly 410 to continuously or continuously dispense a cleaning liquid (e.g., water) from the reciprocating nozzle assembly at one or more of the following predetermined device operating parameters, as long as the button is pressed: a cleaning liquid flow rate, a reciprocating motion frequency, or a reciprocating motion amplitude. In some embodiments, the cleaning fluid flow rate is higher than any formulation flow rate of one or more of the formulation routines stored in the control device 412, which has the advantage of efficiently flushing residual formulation from the formulation dispensing assembly.
[0089] The passage adapter 404 attaches to the reusable handle 406 on the reciprocating nozzle assembly 414. In some embodiments, the passage adapter 404 provides an audible feedback signal when correctly engaged with the reusable handle 406.
[0090] Figures 6 and 7 show a representative formulation dispensing assembly 600, which is compatible with any of the formulation delivery devices, formulation cartridges, and cleaning cartridges described herein. The primary function of the formulation dispensing assembly 600 is to dispense a mixture of two different formulations from a formulation cartridge onto a user's skin or hair. In some embodiments, the formulation dispensing assembly 600 dispenses the mixture at a rate of 20 to 40 mL / min or 120 mL per minute, for example, 20 to 35 mL / min, 20 to 30 mL / min, 20 to 25 mL / min, 25 to 35 mL / min, 25 to 30 mL / min, or 35 to 40 mL / min.
[0091] The formulation distribution assembly 600 includes a first formulation inlet 602 and a second formulation inlet 604, a first fluid conduit 606 and a second fluid conduit 608 fluidically connected to the first formulation inlet 602 and the second formulation inlet 604, respectively. In some embodiments, the first fluid conduit 606 and the second fluid conduit 608 are sized relative to each other to create a predetermined component ratio between a first formulation and a second formulation. For example, in some embodiments, the first fluid conduit 606 and the second fluid conduit 608 are the same size, for example, to create a predetermined component ratio of 1:1.In other embodiments, the first fluid conduit 606 and the second fluid conduit 608 have a different diameter, for example, to create a predetermined component ratio other than 1:1. In . In certain embodiments, each of the first formulation inlet 602 and the second formulation inlet 604 is formed of projections extending rearward (i.e., toward the cavity of the cartridge when disposed in the reusable handle) from the first fluid conduit and the second fluid conduit, respectively, to a rear end of the reusable handle, the projections being configured to protrude into the formulation cartridge.
[0092] The formulation distribution assembly 600 also includes a motor 610, a multiplier 612 operationally connected to the motor 610, and a pump 614 driven by the motor 610 via the multiplier 612. In some embodiments, the pump 614 is a peristaltic pump; it has been found that this improves formulation distribution when used in combination with the mixing chambers and tapered formulation channels described herein.
[0093] A reciprocating nozzle assembly 616 includes a plurality of ring nozzles 618 arranged on a comb 620 which, in use, performs a reciprocating motion along a groove in the reusable handle 406 while dispensing the formulation onto a user's skin or hair, in order to obtain more uniform formulation coverage. Each of the nozzles 618 includes a formulation channel 622, each of which is fluidly connected to the first fluid channel 606 and the second fluid channel 608 via the manifold 624. In some embodiments, each formulation channel 622 is tapered, which has the advantage of increasing the formulation dispensing speed and / or further mixing the two formulations. The tapered formulation channel has proven advantageous when used in combination with other features described in this document, for example, when the pump 614 is a peristaltic pump and / or when the turbulent mixing chamber includes one or more helical mixers 626.
[0094] The motor 610 and the gearbox 612 drive the reciprocating nozzle assembly 616 in a linear reciprocating motion. In one embodiment, the linear reciprocating motion is driven by an eccentric roller 628 coupled to an output shaft 630 of the gearbox 612, which eccentric roller 628 rotates within an annular support of the comb 620. Driving the pump 614 and the reciprocating nozzle assembly 616 with a common motor 610 improves energy efficiency, reduces weight and size, thus improving the form factor of the formulation delivery device. However, some embodiments use more than one motor to drive the pump 614 and the reciprocating nozzle assembly 616.
[0095] The nozzles 618 are fluidly connected to the first fluid conduit 606 and the second fluid conduit 608 via a turbulent mixing chamber 632, which mixes A first formulation is drawn from the formulation cartridge via the first fluid line 606, and a second formulation is drawn from the formulation cartridge via the second fluid line 608 to create a blended formulation. In particular, the turbulent mixing chamber 632 mixes the two formulations by combining them in a common, pressurized chamber and by directing the flow of both formulations past one or more mixing elements, which create a turbulent flow of the blended formulation (as opposed to a laminar flow). The proportions of the first formulation relative to the second formulation vary depending on the embodiment. For example, in some embodiments, the blended formulation is a mixture of a first formulation and a second formulation in a ratio of approximately 0.8:1.0 to 1.2:1.0, for example, 0.85, 0.90, 0.95, 1.00, 1.05, 1.10, or 1.15.
[0096] In some embodiments, the turbulent mixing chamber 632 is disposed between the pump 614 and the reciprocating nozzle assembly 616. In this configuration, the two formulations are mixed just before distribution, which creates a more uniform formulation consistency and results in better formulation distribution from the nozzles 618, compared to mixing the formulations upstream of the pump 614.
[0097] In some embodiments, the turbulent mixing chamber 632 includes a helical mixer 626 disposed inside it. Some embodiments include a plurality of helical mixers 626 fluidically connected in series along a fluidic path inside the turbulent mixing chamber 632, for improved mixing. In some embodiments, each helical mixer has an outside diameter of between 2.00 mm and 5.00 mm, for example between 3.00 mm and 4.00 mm, for example 3.18 mm. In some embodiments, each helical mixer has a total length of between 20.0 mm and 40.0 mm, for example between 25.0 mm and 35.0 mm, for example 33.0 mm. In some embodiments, each helical mixer has a length-diameter pitch (defined as the total length / [outside diameter * # mixing elements]) of between 0.75 and 1.25, for example between 0.80 and 0.90, for example 0.865.It has been found that the combination of the preceding specifications produces the best consistency of the blended formulation, particularly when the two formulations are mixed only downstream of pump 614, just upstream of the reciprocating nozzle assembly 616, and also when pump 614 is a peristaltic pump.
[0098] In operation, the pump 614 draws the formulation from the connected formulation cartridge, through the first fluid line 606 and the second fluid line 608, through the turbulent mixing chamber 632, through the manifold 624, and through the nozzles 618. In the illustrated embodiment, the first fluid line 606 and the second fluid conduit 608 are kept fluidly separate until downstream of the pump 614, to prevent the mixing of the two formulations until the turbulent mixing chamber 632. As stated previously, mixing the two formulations just before distribution (i.e. between the pump 614 and the manifold 624) improves the consistency of the mixed formulation.
[0099] Figures 8A to 10 show a formulation cartridge 800 representative of a type of formulation cartridge that is compatible with any of the formulation dispensing systems, formulation dispensing devices, and formulation product lines described in this document. However, the formulation dispensing systems, formulation dispensing devices, and formulation product lines described in this document are not required to use the durable formulation cartridge 800 shown in Figures 8A to 10.
[0100] The Formulation Cartridge 800 is a sustainable embodiment specifically designed to reduce waste and environmental impact, while delivering a user-friendly experience. To this end, the Formulation Cartridge 800 includes two main components: a handle portion 802 and a disposable formulation cartridge refill unit 804 (hereinafter referred to simply as the refill unit 804) configured to slide reversibly into the handle portion 802. Historically, known cartridges have been designed to be entirely discarded after the stored formulation inside is exhausted, resulting in significant waste and a higher cost for the consumer.
[0101] Unlike known cartridges, the Formulation Cartridge 800 is constructed such that the handle portion 802 can be reused indefinitely, and only the refill units 804 can be easily replaced once the stored formulation inside is exhausted. Furthermore, each refill unit 804 is designed to be broken down into smaller components, some of which can be recycled in certain embodiments and others discarded. Thus, the Formulation Cartridge 800 uses an innovative structure to reduce waste and improve the user experience.
[0102] The handle portion 802 is dimensioned and constructed to be repeatedly inserted into the cavity of the formulation delivery device's cartridge. Accordingly, the handle portion 802 is formed of ABS plastic or a similar rigid polymer or other material and includes a hollow handle portion 802 configured to receive the refill unit 804 inside, and a tray portion 806 that extends away from the handle portion 802. The handle portion 802 is a two-piece assembly in the representative embodiment shown (although it may be a single piece in other embodiments). and is dimensioned so that it forms a continuous extension of the formulation dispensing device handle when fully inserted into a cartridge cavity thereof. The tray portion 808 projects away from the handle portion 802 and has a U-shape configured to support the refill unit 804 (for example, the front body portion 810). To facilitate secure engagement and easy removal, the handle portion 802 includes coupling means for coupling the formulation cartridge 800 to a reusable handle of a formulation dispensing device. Representative coupling means include a cartridge release device 812 (for example, a latch) formed in the handle portion 802, which engages with the formulation dispensing device upon proper and complete insertion.
[0103] As more clearly shown in [Fig. 9A], the refill unit 804 generally includes a refill pack comprising a shell 826 enclosing at least one formulation container (for example, a pack, a pouch, or another container), for example, a first formulation pouch 814 and a second formulation pouch 816, and a valve frame 832 coupled to the refill pack, for example, a front body portion 810 of the shell 826. The first formulation pouch 814 and the second formulation pouch 816 contain a first formulation 818 and a second formulation 820, respectively. The refill unit 804 may optionally include a pack sleeve 830.
[0104] Each of the first formulation pouch 814 and the second formulation pouch 816 has a volume of approximately 40 mL to approximately 70 mL, approximately 50 mL to approximately 60 mL, approximately 40 mL to approximately 65 mL, approximately 40 mL to approximately 60 mL, approximately 40 mL to approximately 55 mL, approximately 40 mL to approximately 50 mL, approximately 45 mL to approximately 70 mL, approximately 50 mL to approximately 70 mL, approximately 55 mL to approximately 70 mL, approximately 60 mL to approximately 70 mL, or approximately 55 mL. In some embodiments, the first formulation pouch 814 and the second formulation pouch 816 have different volumes. In some embodiments, the refill unit 804 stores only one formulation container.
[0105] The first formulation 818 and the second formulation 820 can each be any one of the formulations described in this document, for example, a permanent hair dye; a semi-permanent hair dye; a developer; a conditioner; a hair growth treatment, such as minoxidil; a protein hair treatment; a disulfide bond repair hair treatment; a fluid hair treatment; a fluid scalp treatment, or the like. In some embodiments, the first formulation 818 and the second formulation 820 are different. For example, in some embodiments, the first formulation 818 is a hair dye and the second is a... mulation 820 is a developer. In other embodiments, the first formulation 818 and the second formulation 820 are the same (for example, a conditioner or scalp treatment formulation).
[0106] As shown in [Fig. 9A], each formulation pouch 814, 816 includes a packet 822 containing a formulation and valve means for selectively coupling the refill unit to a dispensing nozzle unit of a formulation delivery device when the formulation cartridge 800 is received in the hand-held formulation delivery device. Representative valve means include a valve 824 through which the formulation exits the packet 822. Representative formulation containers are described in International Patent Application Publication No. 2019 / 067336A2, published on April 4, 2019, and assigned to L'Oréal SA, and in Patent Application Publication No. 2021 / 0196021A1, published on July 1, 2021, and assigned to L'Oréal SA.
[0107] The shell 826 has an elongated shape sized to fit into the reusable handle portion 802. The shell 826 encloses and protects the first formulation bag 814 and the second formulation bag 816 and engages with the valve frame 832 (described below). Thus, the shell 826 functions as packaging that protects the formulation bags 814 and 816 during trade before loading into the formulation dispensing device.
[0108] In some embodiments, the shell 826 has an overall length of between 150 mm and 250 mm (for example, 175 mm to 225 mm, 185 mm to 215 mm, 195 mm to 205 mm, or 200 mm) and a maximum cross-sectional dimension of 25 mm to 50 mm (for example, 30 mm to 45 mm, 35 mm to 40 mm, or 36 mm). The shell 826 comprises a rear body portion 828 and a thin front body portion 810, for example, a neck portion, extending away from the body portion 828. The body portion 828 and the thin front body portion 810 are generally aligned in a common longitudinal direction to allow assembly with the reusable handle portion 802 and to allow insertion into the cartridge cavity of the formulation delivery device.
[0109] In some embodiments, the shell 826 is constructed at least partially from a recyclable or recycled material, for example, a paper material such as injection-molded paper or die-cut textured paper (e.g., cardboard). In the illustrated embodiment, the shell 826 is formed from a single piece of injection-molded paper material. In some embodiments in which the shell 826 is formed from paper, the paper has a weight of between 8 and 12 points (e.g., 8.5 points, 9.0 points, 9.5 points, 10.0 points, 10.5 points, 11.0 points, or 11.5 points) to provide sufficient stiffness without contributing to an excess of disposable material.
[0110] The rear body portion 828 of the shell 826 has a larger cross-sectional dimension than the front body portion 810 when viewed in a plane normal to the longitudinal direction of the cartridge 800. A bump or bulge 827 gives the rear body portion 828 a larger cross-sectional area than the front body portion 810. Advantageously, the bump or bulge 827 allows the use of larger-volume formulation pouches 814, 816. In addition, the bump or bulge 827 forms a stop 829 that butts against a corresponding inner face of the handle portion 802 and secures the longitudinal position of the shell 826 during use.
[0111] The thin front body portion 810 of the shell 826 is dimensioned to fit within the tray portion 806 of the handle portion 802 and to protrude into the cavity of the formulation delivery device's cartridge during use. As shown more clearly in [Fig. 8A], the front body portion 810 mates with the valve frame 832. To facilitate a secure connection and alignment with the valve frame 832, the front body portion 810 includes means for coupling the valve frame, for example, at least one coupling tab 844 configured to selectively engage with the valve frame 832. In the illustrated embodiment, the front body portion 810 includes a single coupling tab 844 extending away from one of its front ends. The coupling lug 844 includes an engagement feature, for example a notch or raised prominence 831 formed and dimensioned to engage in a complementary opening 833 of the valve frame 832.
[0112] The shell 806 can have many different configurations. For example, referring to Figures 9A and 9B together, the illustrated shell 806 is a double-shell configuration formed with at least two partial shells (in this embodiment, two halves 835, 837) coupled in an articulated manner by a hinge 839, for example, a living hinge formed integrally with the two halves. In the embodiment shown, the hinge 839 is disposed at the distal end of the shell 806, i.e., at a distal end of each of the halves 835, 837. In other embodiments, the hinge can be disposed at a different location, for example, along a longitudinal edge of the halves. In some embodiments, the shell 806 includes a different number of partial shells, for example, three or four partial shells that assemble to enclose the formulation pockets 814, 816.In other embodiments, the shell 806 comprises a single piece forming an open-ended tube into which the formulation pouches 814, 816 can be inserted.
[0113] The alignment of halves 835, 837 allows for correct attachment of the front body portion 810 to the valve frame 832. To this end, as Figure 3B shows more clearly, the The halves 835 and 837 optionally include complementary alignment means 841a-d, for example, additional tabs and slots. The alignment means shown are representative and not limiting. In other embodiments, the alignment means may include different fasteners, for example, hook and loop fasteners. In still other embodiments, the partial shells may be configured to align with each other by friction or other means. In addition to aligning the halves, the alignment means 841a-d help to hold the halves together.
[0114] Although the illustrated shell 826 is formed from injection-molded paper material, this construction is representative and not limiting. In some embodiments, the shell 826 is formed from a single piece of die-cut paper, which is folded to give a three-dimensional structure having a rear body portion 828 and a thin neck portion 810 extending away from it. In some of these embodiments, this folded construction creates a polygonal cut in the rear body portion 828 and a polygonal cut in the front body portion 810 (for example, octagonal and hexagonal cuts, respectively). To facilitate assembly, some of these embodiments of the shell 826 include one or more partitions or guidelines that ensure correct folding. Some embodiments feature a cross-section in the shape of a triangle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, or other polygonal shape.
[0115] The optional package sleeve 830 slides onto the neck portion 810 and offers several important advantages. First, it provides additional structure to the reloading unit 804 by sliding onto the front body portion 810 and reinforcing it. Consequently, in some embodiments, the package sleeve 830 has a greater weight or thickness relative to the material that forms the shell 826, although this is not required. In some embodiments, the package sleeve 830 is also made of a recyclable material, which may be the same recyclable material as the shell 826.
[0116] Secondly, in some embodiments, the package sleeve 830 mates with the valve frame 832. For example, the illustrated package sleeve 830 includes a plurality of engagement member recesses 834 configured to reversibly mate with engagement members of the valve frame 832.
[0117] Third, the package sleeve 830 facilitates the disassembly of the refill unit 804. As shown in [Fig. 8A] and Figure 9, in some embodiments, the package sleeve 830 includes an optional integral tear 836a formed on it (e.g., a perforation with a pull tab). In other In some embodiments, the tear is formed on the neck portion 810 (see tear 836b). During use, once the formulation packs 814 and 816 are exhausted, a user pulls the tab of the integral tear 836a and / or 836b, thus separating the valve frame 832 from the pack sleeve 830. After this action is complete, the pack sleeve 830 is recycled and the valve frame 832 is discarded. In some embodiments, the integral tear 836 is located on the shell 826, for example, the front body portion 810.
[0118] The valve frame 832 provides a rigid structure that aligns the valves 824 of the formulation pouch for proper fluid interconnection with the fluid lines of the formulation delivery device. Furthermore, in some embodiments, the valve frame 832 supports an optional encryption chip 838 as described above. In such embodiments, the valve frame 832 is sized and shaped to precisely position the encryption chip 838 adjacent to the authentication interface of the formulation delivery device cartridge when the formulation cartridge 800 is disposed in the handle of the formulation delivery device. Therefore, the valve frame 832 is formed of ABS plastic, HDPE, or another rigid polymer or other material. In some embodiments, the valve frame 832 is formed of the same material as the shell 806.
[0119] A plurality of valve engagement units 840 extend through a front end of the valve frame 832. Each valve engagement unit 840 receives and secures one of the formulation pouch valves 824. In some embodiments, the valve engagement unit 840 is a valve opening or cutout disposed through a face of the valve frame 832, the valve opening or cutout being sized to receive a valve from a formulation pouch and optionally to engage an outer circumference of the valve. To allow coupling with the package sleeve 830 (or the shell 826 in some embodiments), the valve frame 832 includes optional engagement members 842 (for example, tabs) extending from it. In some embodiments, the valve frame 832 engages with the front body portion 810 by a friction fit.
[0120] The encryption chip 838 (for example, an RFID tag) is disposed on the refill unit 804, for example, on the body portion 826 or on the valve frame 832 (as in the illustrated embodiment). The encryption chip 838 is positioned on the refill unit 804 such that when the formulation cartridge 800 is inserted into the formulation dispensing device, it is positioned to be read by the cartridge authentication interface. Consequently, the encryption chip 838 stores information concerning the formulation cartridge. mulation 800 and its contents, for example at least one of a formulation identification, a starting formulation quantity, a formulation expiry date or a formulation production date.
[0121] Thus, the shell 826, the formulation pouches 814, 816, the valve frame 832 and the optional package sleeve 830 form the refill unit 804. During use, the refill unit 804 can be reversibly coupled to the handle portion 802, for example, by fastening means such as coupling tabs on the shell 826 or friction fit between the refill unit 804 and the handle portion 802.
[0122] [Fig. 11] shows representative methods 1100 that can be used with any of the formulation cartridges of this disclosure, for example formulation cartridge 800 of Figures 8A-10. By way of example, [Fig. 11] shows methods of replenishing or recharging formulation cartridges of this disclosure.
[0123] In step 1102, a formulation cartridge is provided, for example, a formulation cartridge configured to provide at least one formulation to a formulation dispensing device. In some embodiments, the formulation cartridge includes a formulation pouch that is emptied of its formulation. In some embodiments, the formulation cartridge is removed from a formulation dispensing device, for example, by pressing a cartridge release device and pulling the formulation cartridge out of the formulation dispensing device. In any embodiment, the formulation cartridge includes a reusable body or handle and a formulation cartridge refill unit, which may include a valve frame engaging with a refill pack storing at least one formulation. In any embodiment, the refill pack includes a shell containing at least one container storing at least one formulation.
[0124] In step 1104, the formulation cartridge refill unit is separated from the reusable handle. In some embodiments, the reusable handle is disassembled into two or more parts, thereby revealing at least a portion of the formulation cartridge refill unit, and then the formulation cartridge refill unit is removed from the disassembled reusable handle.
[0125] In the optional step 1106, the formulation cartridge refill unit is at least partially disassembled, for example by separating the refill pack from the valve frame (such as by separating at least one formulation container from a shell). In some embodiments, a recyclable portion of the refill unit is separated from a non-recyclable portion of the refill unit. For example, the valve frame and formulation pouches are separated from the body portion and / or of the optional pack sleeve (both recyclable in some embodiments), for example, by tearing a full tear on the pack sleeve or body portion and pulling the valve frame (and the exhausted formulation pouches attached to it) away from the pack sleeve and body portion.
[0126] In the optional step 1108, the recyclable portion(s) of the disposable refill unit are recycled (i.e. the body portion, the valve frame and / or the pack sleeve), and the non-recyclable portion(s) are discarded (i.e. the spent formulation bags and the valve frame).
[0127] In step 1110, a new disposable refill unit is inserted into the reusable cartridge handle.
[0128] In step 1112, the refilled formulation cartridge is reinserted into the formulation delivery device after the new disposable refill unit is inserted into the reusable cartridge handle.
[0129] Thus, the present disclosure proposes not only sustainable formulation cartridges, but also methods of using them to further reduce waste and environmental impact.
[0130] Figure 12 shows a representative 1200 cleaning cartridge, which has the same features as the cleaning cartridges described previously, and which is compatible with any formulation delivery system, formulation delivery device, and product line of this disclosure. Accordingly, the 1200 cleaning cartridge is of the same cartridge type (for example, it is configured to fit securely inside the reusable handle of the formulation delivery device, it has the same shape and dimensions, and a plurality of outlet nozzles) as the formulation cartridges described herein.
[0131] The main function of the cleaning cartridge 1200 is to connect fluidly to a formulation delivery device and to supply a cleaning fluid 1202 (for example, water) which is expelled through a formulation dispensing assembly as part of a cleaning routine. Accordingly, the cleaning cartridge 1200 is a reusable assembly with a body portion 1204 made of ABS plastic or other suitable rigid polymer. The body portion 1204 supports a cleaning fluid reservoir 1206, i.e., a tank, which stores the cleaning fluid 1202 inside, for example, 50 to 200 mL thereof. The cleaning fluid reservoir 1206 has a plurality of outlet nozzles 1208 which are sized and positioned to couple fluidly to the fluid lines of the formulation delivery device.A 1210 refill cap makes it easy to refill the 1206 cleaning fluid reservoir.
