Description

Title of the invention: DEVICE AND METHOD FOR SELECTIVELY MODIFYING POSITION INFORMATION THROTTLE IN AN AIRCRAFT Technical field

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of controlling a propulsion engine of an aircraft and more particularly relates to a method aimed at selectively modifying information representative of a position of the throttle lever of the propulsion engine in order to influence a thrust calculation when predefined situations are encountered. STATE OF PRIOR ART

[0002] Each propulsion engine of an aircraft is associated with a throttle lever whose physical position allows a propulsion engine control device to calculate the thrust of the propulsion engine.

[0003] According to a first operating mode, called manual mode, the thrust of the propulsion engine is determined as a function of the physical position of the throttle lever.

[0004] According to a second operating mode, called automatic thrust mode, the thrust of the propulsion engine is determined according to other parameters but must not exceed a maximum threshold determined by the physical position of the throttle lever.

[0005] The situation can be improved. It is desirable to provide a solution that allows the calculation of thrust to be influenced when the situation requires it and when a crew does not act on the throttle in the manner expected in view of the situation encountered.

[0006] It is particularly desirable to provide a solution that can be easily integrated into an existing system, without modifying existing devices such as the propulsion engine control device. Statement of the invention

[0007] An object of the present invention is to propose a method for automated modification of position information of a throttle lever associated with a propulsion engine, the method being implemented by a device configured to receive position information, representative of a current position of the throttle lever, the method comprising steps of: determining that a predefined situation from a list of predefined situations is encountered when a condition, called a flight condition, associated with the predefined situation is verified, each predefined situation being representative of a flight situation in which an actuation of the throttle lever is deemed necessary; for each predefined situation encountered, obtain a category associated with said predefined situation, each predefined situation being associated with a category among predefined categories and each category being representative of a predefined piloting context, and obtain a predefined trigger duration associated with the predefined situation encountered and an expected predefined position of the throttle in said predefined situation encountered; evaluate a condition, called a validity condition, associated with the category obtained;modifying the received position information, by replacing the current throttle position with the expected predefined throttle position obtained, when the flight condition associated with the predefined situation encountered and the validity condition of the category associated with said predefined situation are verified simultaneously for a duration at least equal to said predefined trigger duration obtained; and sending to a propulsion engine control device the modified position information in the event of modification, and the received position information otherwise.;

[0008] It is thus possible to automatically modify the position information and therefore to automatically influence the thrust of the propulsion engine when the situation requires it, in other words when actuation of the throttle lever is deemed necessary in a flight situation and the actuation is not carried out by the crew, and this without modifying the propulsion engine control device.

[0010] According to a particular embodiment, the predefined categories comprise a second category having a validity condition verified when a crew is not previously declared unfit, and the triggering duration, associated with each predefined situation of the second category, depends on the predefined situation.

[0011] According to a particular embodiment, the predefined categories include a third category having a validity condition that is always verified, and the trigger duration, associated with each predefined situation of the third category, is zero.

[0012] According to a particular embodiment, the expected predefined position of the throttle associated with at least one predefined situation from the list of predefined situations comprises a first predefined position and a second predefined position, and modifying the position information received by replacing the current position of the throttle with the expected predefined position of the throttle obtained comprises performing a first modification of the position information by replacing the current position of the throttle with the first predefined position, and performing a second modification of the position information by replacing the current throttle position with the second predefined position, the second modification of the position information being made after the elapse of a predefined time associated with the predefined situation, starting from the first modification.

[0020] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0021] [Fig.l] schematically illustrates an aircraft A comprising a device for automated selective modification of a control system 1 of a propulsion engine.

[0022] With reference to [Fig. 2], the control system 1 of a propulsion engine of the aircraft A comprises a throttle lever 11, a control device 12 of the propulsion engine and a management device 13 of an automatic thrust mode. The throttle lever 11 is actuated by a crew in order to vary its position. Each time the throttle lever 11 is actuated, said throttle lever 11 emits position information, representative of a current position of the throttle lever 11.

[0023] The control device 12 receives position information, representative of a position of the throttle lever 11, and is configured to determine the thrust of the propulsion engine taking into account the received position information. In a first operating mode, called manual mode, the control device 12 determines the thrust as a function of said received position information. In a second operating mode, called automatic thrust mode, the thrust is determined by the management device 13 and transmitted to the control device 12 by a communication link. The control device 12 determines a maximum thrust threshold as a function of the received position information, the maximum thrust threshold being a threshold not to be exceeded. In other words, when the management device 13 transmits to the control device 12 a thrust value greater than the maximum thrust threshold, the control device 12 limits the thrust to said maximum thrust threshold.

[0024] The automatic thrust mode management device 13 is configured to determine the thrust of the propulsion engine as a function of parameters of the aircraft A.

[0025] The control system 1 further comprises an automated selective modification device 100. The automated selective modification device 100 is configured to receive, from the throttle lever 11, each position information emitted by the throttle 11. The automated selective modification device 100 is further configured to conditionally modify the received position information and to send the modified position information to the propulsion engine control device 12 in the event of modification, and to send the received position information otherwise.

[0026] The conditional modification of the received position information is carried out by the automated selective modification device 100 when a predefined situation, from a list of predefined situations, is detected and when said predefined situation is maintained for a trigger threshold duration associated with the detected predefined situation and a validity condition of a category associated with said predefined situation remains satisfied for said trigger threshold duration.

[0027] For this, the automated selective modification device 100 evaluates, for each predefined situation in the list of predefined situations, a condition, called a flight condition, associated with said predefined situation. When the flight condition associated with a said predefined situation is verified, said predefined situation is encountered and detected. The automated selective modification device 100 then obtains a category, from among predefined categories, which is associated with the predefined situation encountered, and evaluates a condition, called a validity condition, associated with said category. The automated selective modification device 100 further obtains, for each predefined situation encountered, a predefined trigger duration associated with the detected predefined situation and an expected predefined position of the throttle lever 11 in the detected predefined situation. Each piece of information associated with the predefined situation encountered such as the category, the predefined trigger duration or the expected predefined position of the throttle lever 11 can be obtained for example by means of a query in a database from information representative of the predefined situation detected. When the flight condition and the validity condition of the category associated with the predefined situation encountered are verified simultaneously for a duration at least equal to the predefined trigger duration obtained, the automated selective modification device 100 modifies the position information received from the throttle lever 11, by replacing the current position of the throttle lever 11 with the expected predefined position of the throttle lever 11 associated with the predefined situation detected.

[0028] Each predefined position of the throttle lever 11 defines a thrust of the propulsion engine. Thus, in the event of modification of the position information by the automated selective modification device 100, the control device 12 calculates the thrust as a function of the predefined position of the throttle lever 11 associated with the predefined situation detected when the manual mode is activated, and the control device 12 calculates the maximum thrust threshold as a function of the position predefined throttle 11 associated with the predefined situation detected when the auto-thrust mode is activated.

[0029] Examples of predefined positions are, in ascending order of associated thrust, an idle position, a climb position, a maximum continuous thrust position, and a maximum available thrust position. According to an exemplary embodiment, there is a predefined number of predefined positions expected of the throttle lever 11.

[0030] Each predefined situation is representative of a flight situation or a predefined flight context, in which an actuation of the throttle lever 11 is deemed necessary in order to reach an expected predefined position. Each flight condition depends on flight parameters and the current position of the throttle lever 11. An example of a predefined situation is a failure of the propulsion engine controlled by the control system 1. The flight condition making it possible to detect it is that an engine failure is detected and that the current position of the throttle lever 11 is different from the idle position. Another example of a predefined situation is a need for a go-around, the associated flight condition being a detection of a need for a go-around and a current position of the throttle lever 11 different from the maximum available thrust position.

[0031] Each predefined situation is associated with one of the predefined categories, each of the predefined categories being representative of a piloting context. The predefined categories each define a degree of urgency of an actuation of the throttle lever 11, which depends on the predefined situation and the aptitude of a crew. According to a preferred embodiment, a first category corresponds to an incapacity of the crew. The condition for validity of the first category is that the crew must first be declared unfit. The crew is declared unfit when the crew cannot physically operate the throttle lever 11, for example when the crew is absent from the cockpit during a physiological break or when the crew experiences a physical incapacity. A second category corresponds to a crew declared fit, without urgency linked to the predefined situation. As long as the crew is not declared unfit, the condition of validity of the second category is verified. A third category corresponds to an emergency, whether the crew is fit or not. The condition of validity of the third category is always verified.

[0032] In order to verify the validity condition of a category, the automated selective modification device 100 retrieves, for example, data from a flight management system (FMS) or more generally from the avionics of the aircraft A in order to determine whether actions manual actions are carried out in the cockpit. For example, the crew is declared fit as long as manual actions are detected at intervals less than a predetermined time, or when an incapacitation indicator is deactivated, or when movement is detected in the cockpit by a video camera, and the second and third categories are then applicable. On the other hand, the crew is declared unfit when no manual actions have been detected during the predetermined time, or when a crew incapacitation indicator is activated by the crew itself, for example before a crew absence, or when no movement is detected in the cockpit by a video camera for a predetermined time. The first and third categories are then applicable.

[0033] Furthermore, the predefined trigger duration depends on the predefined situation encountered and the category. For example, each predefined situation of the first category is associated with a predefined trigger duration of zero, so that when the crew is previously declared unfit, a predefined situation requiring actuation of the throttle lever 11 will result in a modification of the position information without delay. Similarly, each predefined situation of the third category is associated with a predefined trigger duration of zero, so that when a predefined situation requires urgent actuation of the throttle lever 11, a modification of the position information is made without delay. On the other hand, each predefined situation of the second category is associated with a predefined triggering duration which varies according to the predefined situation considered, and preferably non-zero, so that the crew, declared fit, has the possibility of actuating the throttle lever 11 before an automatic modification of the position information is made.

[0034] For example, the predefined engine failure situation described above is associated with a predefined first category situation, the associated trigger duration then being zero. According to another example, the predefined engine failure situation is associated with a predefined second category situation, with a non-zero trigger duration, for example equal to 4 minutes. The predefined position of the throttle lever 11 is an idle position.

[0035] The predefined situation of need for go-around is for example associated with a predefined situation of first category, with a zero trigger duration.

[0036] According to another example of a predefined situation of the first category, a flight condition is that a lower altitude threshold is reached during a landing with a current position of the throttle lever 11 different from the idle position. The associated predefined position is the idle position, which makes it possible to deploy the airbrakes when the aircraft A touches the ground.

[0037] According to another example of a predefined situation of the first category, a flight condition is that the aircraft A is in the taxi phase (or "taxi" in English) and the associated predefined position is the idle position, which allows the aircraft A to stop automatically when the crew is incapacitated.

[0038] Examples of predefined situations of the second category are presented below. According to a first example, a flight condition is that an upper altitude threshold is reached during a takeoff or a go-around operation, and that the current position of the throttle lever 11 remains above the climb position. The associated predefined position is the climb position with an associated non-zero trigger duration. This allows the aircraft A to reduce thrust and, according to a particular embodiment, to further engage the automatic thrust mode. According to a second example, a flight condition is that an engine failure is detected on another propulsion engine, the associated predefined position being a maximum continuous thrust position with an associated non-zero trigger duration. This makes it possible to compensate for the loss of thrust due to the failure of the other engine.According to a third example, in a so-called economic takeoff context, in other words a takeoff with a thrust lower than the maximum available thrust, when a temperature threshold is not reached, the associated predefined position is the maximum available thrust position with an associated non-zero trigger duration, for example 8 seconds. This makes it possible to ensure a safe takeoff when the conditions necessary for economic takeoff are not met.

[0039] Examples of predefined situations of the third category are presented below. According to a first example, a flight condition is that a takeoff rejection is triggered, which corresponds to a context in which the takeoff must be interrupted, and that the position of the throttle lever 11 is different from the idle position. The predefined position is the idle position, with a zero trigger duration. According to a second example, a flight condition, defined in the context of a takeoff, is that a failure is detected on another propulsion engine and that a first speed threshold, called the flight commitment threshold, is exceeded. The associated predefined position is the maximum available thrust position, with a zero trigger duration. According to a third example, a flight condition is that the deployment of a thrust reverser is detected during a flight phase, in other words outside of landing and taxiing. The associated predefined position is the idle position with a zero trigger duration. This ensures the stability of the aircraft A. According to a fourth example, a flight condition is that an angle of attack of the aircraft A is greater than a predefined angle threshold, reflecting a risk of stalling, and that the position of the throttle lever 11 is not . not at maximum. The associated preset position is the maximum available thrust position, with zero trigger time. This allows aircraft A to be accelerated to prevent stalling.

[0040] According to a particular embodiment, each propulsion engine of the aircraft A is controlled by a control system 1 as illustrated in [Fig.l], the aircraft A thus comprising as many automated selective modification devices 100 as there are propulsion engines.

[0041] With reference to [Fig. 3], a method for conditionally modifying information representative of a position of a throttle lever 11, implemented by the automated selective modification device 100, comprises the following steps.

[0042] In a first step 300, the method is initialized, for example when the automated selective modification device 100 is powered up or when the propulsion engine is switched on.

[0043] In a following step 302, the automated selective modification device 100 evaluates, for each predefined situation in the list of predefined situations, a flight condition associated with said predefined situation. For example, the automated selective modification device 100 monitors parameters of the aircraft A and compares them to each flight condition associated with a predefined situation in the list.

[0044] In a subsequent step 304, the automated selective modification device 100 determines whether a predefined situation is encountered and detected. When the automated selective modification device 100 determines that the flight condition associated with one of the predefined situations is verified, then said predefined situation is encountered and detected. If this is the case, then a step 306 is performed. Otherwise, when no predefined situation is detected, the method returns to step 302.

[0045] In step 306, the automated selective modification device 100 obtains information associated with the detected predefined situation, which are a category, a predefined trigger duration and a predefined position of the throttle lever 11 expected in the predefined situation encountered. According to one example, the automated selective modification device 100 interrogates a database storing, for each predefined situation, all of the associated information, and thus retrieves said associated information. The automated selective modification device 100 further obtains or retrieves the validity condition of the category obtained.

[0046] In a following step 308, the automated selective modification device 100 determines whether the category associated with the predefined situation considered is applicable, in other words whether the validity condition of said category is satisfied. If this is the case, the category being applicable, a step 310 is carried out. Otherwise, the method returns to step 302.

[0047] For example, for a predefined situation of the first category, the automated selective modification device 100 checks whether the crew has previously been declared unfit. If this is the case, the first category is applicable and step 310 is carried out. For a predefined situation of the second category, the automated selective modification device 100 checks that the crew has not previously been declared unfit, and goes to step 310 if no unfitness of the crew is declared or returns to step 302 otherwise. For a predefined situation of the third category, the automated selective modification device 100 considers that the validity condition is still verified and then necessarily goes to step 310.In step 310, the automated selective modification device 100 determines whether the predefined trigger duration associated with the detected predefined situation has elapsed, since the detection of the predefined situation in question. If so, a step 312 is performed. Otherwise, a step 311 is performed.

[0048] In step 311, the automated selective modification device 100 determines whether the flight condition associated with the predefined situation is still verified. If this is the case, the method returns to step 308. Otherwise, the method returns to step 302. Thus, for a predefined situation of the second category, if the crew has carried out an actuation of the throttle lever 11 deemed necessary in the predefined situation considered and the flight condition is then no longer verified, it is no longer necessary to modify the position information of the throttle lever 11 automatically.

[0049] In step 312, the automated selective modification device 100 modifies the information representative of the current position of the throttle lever 11 received from the throttle lever 11 by replacing the current position of the throttle lever 11 with the expected predefined position of the throttle lever 11 in the detected predefined situation, then transmits said modified information, representative of said predefined position, to the control device 12.

[0050] The method then returns to step 302.

[0051] [Fig.4] schematically illustrates an example of a hardware platform making it possible to implement, in the form of electronic circuitry, the automated selective modification device 100.

[0053] The I / f interface manager 405 allows the automated selective modification device 100 to interact with the throttle 11, with the control device 12 and with equipment of the aircraft A such as sensors, avionics, in order to receive predefined parameter values.

[0054] The processor 401 is capable of executing instructions loaded into the RAM 402 from the ROM 403, an external memory, a storage medium (such as an SD card), or a communications network.
