Description

Title of the invention: Autonomous or remote-controlled medium-changing machine

[0001] The present invention relates to an autonomous or remote-controlled medium-changing machine.

[0002] Such a device is, for example, a drone.

[0003] On the one hand, we know aerial drones whose implementation is quick and easy to carry out aerial missions, particularly at long distances from their starting point. Such drones are not designed to dive underwater in order to carry out underwater missions. On the other hand, we know underwater drones which allow underwater missions to be carried out, such as the implementation of underwater acoustic measurements. However, the implementation of underwater drones is delicate and requires in particular a mechanical device intended to put the drone in the water from a carrier, such as a surface ship.

[0004] One of the aims of the invention is to overcome these drawbacks by proposing an autonomous or remote-controlled machine capable of carrying out underwater missions without being launched from a mechanical device of a carrier, such as a winch for example.

[0005] To this end, the invention relates to an autonomous or remote-controlled medium-changing machine, comprising a structure on which are mounted at least one propulsion unit, a ballast system and at least one payload, the machine being watertight, at least the ballast system being reversibly mounted on the structure by at least one clipping element.

[0006] By choosing a propulsion assembly suitable for moving the craft in the air or underwater, the medium-changing craft according to the invention makes it possible to benefit from the advantages linked to aerial craft and underwater craft thanks to the ballasting system which makes it possible to submerge the craft underwater. The craft can thus take off from a starting point which can be on land or far from the target of the craft and submerge underwater at the desired location without having been launched from a mechanical device of a surface ship. It can therefore be operated from a surface ship which does not have such a mechanical device. The fact that the ballasting system is reversibly fixed to the structure of the craft by at least one clipping element makes it possible to mount such a ballasting system on an existing aerial craft in order to make it capable of operating underwater.

[0007] The medium-changing machine according to the invention may comprise one or more of the following characteristics, considered alone or in any technically conceivable combination: - the ballast system comprises a piston movable in translation in a tube, a chamber having an internal volume being defined between the tube and the piston, the movement of the piston in the tube causing a modification of the internal volume of the chamber so as to modify the buoyancy of the machine. - the movement of the piston is driven by a wheel mounted on a motorized worm screw. - the structure comprises at least one longitudinal crosspiece, the clipping element comprising a body secured to the ballast system and at least one hook fixed reversibly to the longitudinal crosspiece. - the structure comprises at least two substantially parallel longitudinal crosspieces, the clipping element comprising two hooks extending at two opposite ends of the body, each hook being reversibly fixed to one of said longitudinal crosspieces. - the payload comprises at least one of the following devices: underwater acoustic signature acquisition device, underwater electromagnetic signature acquisition device, underwater decoy device, underwater noise emission device. - the propulsion assembly comprises at least one propeller capable of moving the craft in the air and underwater. - the rotational speed of the propeller is reduced when the craft is moved underwater compared to the rotational speed of the propeller when the craft is moved in the air.

[0008] Other aspects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly on reading the description which follows, given solely by way of non-limiting example, and made with reference to the appended drawings in which:

[0009] [Fig-1] - [Fig.l] is a schematic perspective representation of a machine with change of environment according to the invention,

[0010] [Fig.2] - [Fig.2] is a schematic perspective representation of a detail of the [Fig.l], showing more particularly the ballasting system of the machine, and

[0011] [Fig.3] - [Fig.3] is a schematic perspective representation of an element of clipping allowing the ballast system to be fixed to the structure of the machine.

[0012] With reference to [Fig.l], an autonomous or remote-controlled medium-change vehicle 1 is described, comprising a structure 2 on which are mounted at least one propulsion unit 4, a ballast system 6 and at least one payload 8. Such a medium-change vehicle is arranged to be able to be moved in the air and underwater and is therefore watertight, in particular waterproof, for example to a depth of at least 30 m. Such a vehicle is for example an aerial and underwater drone piloted autonomously, that is to say without the intervention of an operator, or tele- guided, that is to say with the intervention of a pilot located at a distance from the machine 1.

[0013] The structure 2 is arranged to be able to support the various constituent elements of the medium-changing craft 1 both when it moves in the air and when it moves in the water while being relatively light in order to reduce the dimensioning of the propulsion assembly 4. The structure 2 comprises for example at least one longitudinal crosspiece 10 on which the various constituent elements of the craft are fixed. According to one embodiment, the structure 2 comprises at least two substantially parallel longitudinal crosspieces 10 extending along the length of the craft 1 and spaced from each other along the width of the craft, as shown in [Fig.l].

[0014] The propulsion assembly 4 is arranged to allow autonomous or remote-controlled movement of the medium-changing craft 1 in the air and underwater. For this purpose, the propulsion assembly 4 comprises, for example, at least one propeller 12 mounted so as to be able to rotate on the structure 2. According to the embodiment shown in [Fig. 1], the propulsion assembly 4 comprises four propellers 12 so that the medium-changing craft 1 forms a quadricopter. The propellers 12 are, for example, mounted on transverse crosspieces 14 of the structure 2, each extending in the vicinity of the ends of the longitudinal crosspieces 10 and in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal crosspieces 10. The propeller(s) 12 are arranged to allow the medium-changing craft to be moved and steered both in the air and underwater. For this purpose, the propeller(s) 12 are for example steerable and capable of rotating at different speeds, the rotation speed of the propeller(s) 12 being lower when the medium-changing craft 1 is underwater than the rotation speed of the propeller(s) 12 when the craft 1 is in the air.

[0015] The propeller(s) 12 are controlled by an electronic device 16 of the medium-changing machine 1, comprising a power supply battery 18 and a control unit 20. The electronic device 16 is for example placed in a hermetically sealed enclosure 22 mounted on the structure 2, for example between and under the longitudinal crosspieces 10. The cables connecting the electronic device 16 to the propeller(s) 12 are placed in watertight sheaths. The enclosure 22 has for example the shape of a tube closed at its two ends and is for example mounted by clipping on the longitudinal crosspiece(s) 10, as will be described in more detail later.

[0016] The ballasting system 6 is arranged to modify the buoyancy of the medium-changing craft 1 in order to allow it to float on the water or to dive underwater or to remain at a given depth depending on the filling state of the ballasting system 6. For this purpose, the ballasting system 6 comprises for example a piston 24 movable in translation in a tube 26 and defining with the tube a chamber having an internal volume 28 which varies depending on the position of the piston 24 in the tube 26. The internal volume 28 is for example arranged to be occupied by air or, alternatively, by water. Thus, when the internal volume 28 is occupied by air, the increase in the internal volume 28 increases the buoyancy of the medium-changing craft 1. At the surface, the internal volume 18 thus has its maximum value so that the craft 1 floats on the surface. By reducing the internal volume 28 by moving the piston 24 inside the tube 26 so as to reduce the volume of air, the buoyancy of the craft decreases and it can dive below the surface of the water. When the internal volume 28 is occupied by water, the increase in the internal volume 28 reduces the buoyancy of the medium change device 1. At the surface, the internal volume 18 thus has its minimum value for the device 1 to float on the surface.By increasing the internal volume 28 by moving the piston 24 inside the tube 26 so as to increase the volume of water, the buoyancy of the craft decreases and it can dive below the surface of the water. The piston 24 is for example moved in the tube 26 by driving the piston 24 by a wheel mounted on a motorized endless screw, controlled by the electronic device 16 of the medium change craft 1.

[0017] The ballast system 6 is mounted on the structure 2 in a reversible manner by at least one clipping element 30. More particularly, the clipping element 30 comprises, for example, a body 32 secured to the ballast system 6 and at least one hook 32 extending at one end of the body 32 and reversibly fixed to a longitudinal crosspiece 10 of the structure 2. According to one embodiment, the clipping element 30 comprises two hooks 34 provided at each end of the body 32 and each reversibly fixed to one of the longitudinal crosspieces 10 of the structure 2. The body 32 has, for example, a curved shape substantially complementary to a portion of the tube 26 of the ballast system 6 so that the body 32 surrounds a portion of the tube 26 and is fixed by the hooks 34 at its ends to the longitudinal crosspieces 10 of the structure 2.

[0018] According to one embodiment, the ballast system 6 is fixed by two clipping elements 30 to the longitudinal crosspieces 10 and the enclosure 22 receiving the electronic device 16 is for example also mounted by one or more clipping elements 30 on the longitudinal crosspiece(s) 10 of the structure 2. Insofar as the clipping elements 30 allow reversible fixing of the ballast system 6 and, possibly of the enclosure 22, on the structure 2, these elements can be easily added to an existing craft, such as an aerial drone, which can then also become underwater. In addition, such a fixing offers modularity to the medium change craft 1 by allowing the simple addition or removal of elements on the structure by clipping and unclipping the clipping elements 30.

[0019] The payload 8 is chosen to allow the medium change machine 1 to carry out one or more particular missions, for example underwater. Thus, the payload 8 is for example chosen from at least one of the following devices: device for acquiring an underwater acoustic signature, device for acquiring an underwater electromagnetic signature, underwater decoy device, device for emitting underwater noise. It is understood that this list is not exhaustive and that it can for example be supplemented by one or more payloads allowing the medium-changing craft 1 to perform functions when it is in the air, such a payload being for example an imaging device or other. The payload(s) 8 are for example housed in the enclosure 22 in order to be protected from water when the medium-changing craft 1 is underwater.

[0020] The modularity of the medium-changing machine 1 described above makes it easy to replace the payload with another, simply by replacing the enclosure 22 comprising a particular payload with another enclosure 22 comprising another payload.

[0021] The medium-change craft 1 can thus be easily brought into the area where it is to carry out its mission by moving in the air, landing on the surface of the water in the mission area and then diving underwater using the ballasting system 6. Once the mission is accomplished, the medium-change craft 1 can rise to the surface and return to its base by taking off and moving again in the air. Thus, the medium-change craft 1 does not need to be launched by means of a mechanical device from a surface ship more or less close to the mission area.
