Description

Title of the invention: THRESHOLD CONNECTOR WITH INTEGRATED SEALING FOR A JOINERY FRAME Technical field of the invention

[0001] The invention relates to a threshold connector for a joinery frame, the frame comprising at least one vertical upright and a transverse threshold profile, the threshold connector comprising:

[0002] - a rigid bracket intended to be fixed to the threshold profile and to the upright to link mechanically the threshold profile with the upright;

[0003] - a seal made of an elastomeric material intended to be inserted in the clamping areas between the rigid bracket, the threshold profile and the upright. Technical background

[0004] The joinery intended to reversibly close a bay of a building generally comprises an opening connected in a movable manner to a frame.

[0005] The frame is conventionally formed from several profiles joined together to form a frame.

[0006] The frame of the frame is formed by uprights connecting upper and lower crosspieces. The lower crosspiece of the frame is intended to rest against the ground and is made up of a joinery threshold.

[0007] Joinery is known comprising a threshold formed by an aluminum or aluminum alloy profile. It may also happen that the threshold profile is formed by the assembly of two profiles, one located inside the frame, the other located outside the frame.

[0008] Furthermore, the thresholds of the state of the art are generally fixed to the ground between the uprights of the frame, irreversibly, for example by gluing.

[0009] Usually, during the construction of buildings, the window frames of the joinery are put in place in the building bays before the construction work is completed.

[0010] The bays are crossed many times by the construction workers during the works. The latter are carrying tools or operating machines, they often cause damage to the thresholds of the joinery whose frames are already installed. From another perspective, the thresholds of these frames tend to hinder the passage of the workers and their tools or machines and increase the risk of falls for the workers as well as the risk of damaging their tools.

[0011] Furthermore, to respond favorably to the thickness constraints, the thresholds are generally connected to the sleeper uprights by a connecting piece having low mechanical resistance.

[0012] In the case of frames intended to be arranged in an opening giving onto the exterior of the building, and thus subject to bad weather, it is necessary to provide a seal between the upright and the threshold profile to prevent water infiltration. It is known in particular to add sealing beads, for example silicone, between the threshold profile and each upright after the frame has been mounted. However, this operation takes time and requires equipment.

[0013] To solve these problems, it has already been proposed to fix the threshold profile to the frame uprights before installing the frame in the opening. Thus, the threshold profile can be mounted in the opening at the same time as the rest of the frame in a single operation.

[0014] To enable the threshold profile to be fixed to the uprights, it has already been proposed to arrange rigid brackets at the interface between these two parts. The rigid bracket ensures the mechanical connection between the threshold profile and each upright.

[0015] To solve the sealing problems, it has also been proposed to add seals made of elastomeric material which are interposed between the bracket and each of the threshold profile and the upright.

[0016] However, such a fixing device requires the production of several separate parts which must then be fixed together before mounting the threshold profile on the upright.

[0017] Furthermore, each of the parts of this device is specially designed for a combination of upright and threshold profile of predetermined shapes. It is therefore necessary to decline each of these parts in several models adapted to each combination.

[0018] As a result, the production and stock management of these parts are complex and expensive. Summary of the invention

[0043] In the remainder of the description, elements having similar functions or identical structures will be designated by the same reference.

[0044] In the remainder of the description, the longitudinal, vertical and transverse directions will be adopted without limitation with reference to the trihedron (L, V, T) shown in the figures.

[0045] The longitudinal direction "L" is directed from the inside to the outside of the frame in which the sleeper is installed.

[0046] The terms “inner” and “outer” will also be used with reference to the longitudinal direction, as well as “upper” and “lower” or “top” and “bottom” with reference to the vertical direction and finally “left” and “right” with reference to the transverse direction.

[0047] In this text, the term "rigid" means that the bracket is non-deformable under normal conditions of use, that is to say the conditions in which the bracket is used in the context of the present invention. The rigidity of the bracket makes it possible to give it appropriate resistance to mechanical stresses.

[0048] The joinery according to the invention comprises an opening hingedly connected to a frame.

[0049] The frame is formed from several profiles joined together to form a frame.

[0050] The term “profile” commonly defines, as in the present text, an elongated part of constant cross-section.

[0051] The frame of the frame is formed by uprights connecting upper and lower crosspieces together. The lower crosspiece of the frame is intended to rest against the ground and is made up of a threshold profile.

[0052] [Fig. 1] illustrates an exploded view of a threshold connector 10, a threshold profile 12 and a frame upright 14. In [Fig. 1], only a lower end section of the frame upright 14 has been shown. Similarly, only an end section of the threshold profile 12 intended to be fixed to the lower end section of the frame upright 14 has been shown.

[0053] The threshold connector 10 is intended to be fixed with the threshold profile 12, on the one hand, and with the frame upright 14, on the other hand, to form a portion of a frame. In other words, the threshold connector 10 is intended to be integrated into the joinery.

[0054] More specifically, the threshold connector 10 comprises connecting members intended to mechanically connect the threshold profile 12 and the frame upright 14 to each other.

[0055] The upright 14 is formed by a hollow profile. The upright 14 extends along a main vertical axis “A”. As shown in [Fig.l], the upright 14 comprises at least one internal chamber 16 which opens axially into a lower axial end junction face 18. The interior of the upright 14 is here divided into a plurality of chambers 16 by internal partitions 20. The lower face 18 is delimited by a peripheral edge 22. The upright 14 is here made in a single piece.

[0056] As regards an upright 14 for a frame intended to receive an opening, it comprises a striking wing 23 which extends transversely in projection towards the inside of the frame. The opening is intended to come to bear against an interior face 25 of this wing 23 strike when in the closed position.

[0057] The upright 14 is here made of a plastic material. It is for example an upright 14 made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

[0058] The threshold profile 12 extends along a main transverse axis “B”. As shown in [Fig.l], the threshold profile 12 comprises at least one internal chamber 24 and / or at least one transverse groove 26A, 26B in the form of a slide. In the example shown in the figures, the threshold profile 12 comprises an internal chamber 24 and at least two grooves 26A, 26B. The internal chamber 24 and the grooves 26 open axially into an axial end junction face 28.

[0059] The threshold profile 12 has an outer edge 29A in the form of a flattened bar, a transverse end section of which is intended to be clamped against an end face of the striking wing 23 of the upright 14.

[0060] The first groove 26A, called the outer groove 26A, is arranged so as to open longitudinally above the outer edge 29A.

[0061] The second groove 26B, called the inner groove 26B, opens vertically upwards. It is delimited longitudinally inwards by a vertical wall forming the free inner end edge 29B.

[0062] The threshold profile 12 is here produced by assembling two profiles joined by a connecting element delimiting the chamber 24, but it could be produced in a single piece.

[0063] The threshold profile 12 is made of a material different from that of the upright 14. It is, for example, a metallic material, such as aluminum.

[0064] The threshold connector 10 produced according to the teachings of the invention is intended to mechanically connect the threshold profile 12 with a frame upright 14.

[0065] As shown in more detail in [Fig.2], the threshold connector 10 comprises:

[0066] - a rigid bracket 30 intended to be fixed to the threshold profile 12 and to the upright 14; And

[0067] - a seal 32 made of an elastomer material intended to be inserted in the clamping areas between the rigid bracket 30, the threshold profile 12 and the frame upright 14.

[0068] The sealing gasket 32 is for example made of an elastomer material having a Shore hardness of 70A.

[0069] The rigid bracket 30 is for example made of a rigid plastic material.

[0070] Such a threshold connector 10 makes it possible in particular to easily connect together the upright 14 and the threshold profile 12 which are made of materials which cannot be welded together.

[0071] According to the teachings of the invention, the sealing joint 32 is produced by overmolding on the rigid bracket 30. For example, the threshold connector 10 is obtained by bi-material injection.

[0072] Thus, the threshold connector 10 is made in a single piece performing both the mechanical connection function and the sealing function. It is thus easier for an operator to store and handle.

[0073] The rigid bracket 30 of the threshold connector 10 has, in a horizontal plane, a contour identical to the contour of the upright 14.

[0074] As visible in the exploded view of [Fig.2], the threshold connector 10 comprises a connecting section 34 which comprises elements for fitting with the threshold profile 12 and elements for fitting with a part of the upright 14 intended to be arranged in the same vertical transverse plane as the threshold profile 12. This is an outer longitudinal end section 34 of the threshold connector 10.

[0075] The end section 34 comprises a base 35 intended to rest on the ground by a lower face and intended to receive at least a part of the upright 14 bearing on its upper face 43. This is the part of upright 14 which extends inwards from the striking wing 23, including said striking wing 23. The base 35 of the connecting section 34 has a thickness, in the vertical direction, which is substantially equal to that of the threshold profile 12. On the other hand, the striking wing 23 is not bearing on the base 35 because it is intended to extend above the outer edge 29A of the threshold profile 12.

[0076] The rigid bracket portion 30 of the connecting section 34 of the first lugs 36, here three in number, which extend transversely projecting from a vertical lateral face 37 of the base 35 to be introduced respectively into the outer groove 26A, into the inner groove 26B and into the chamber 24 of the threshold profile 12, from one of the longitudinal ends of said threshold profile 12, in order to position together the rigid bracket 30 and the threshold profile 12 in a mounted position, as illustrated in [Fig.4].

[0077] Referring again to [Fig. 2], the rigid bracket portion 30 of the connecting section 34 also comprises first screw barrels 38 which pass through it transversely at the level of the threshold profile 12. The first screw barrels 38 are intended to receive fixing screws intended to be screwed into the threshold profile 12 to ensure fixing between the threshold connector 10 and the threshold profile 12 in the mounted position. For this purpose, the threshold profile 12 comprises screw sockets 40 arranged opposite the first screw barrels 38 in the mounted position, as can be seen in [Fig. 1].

[0078] The rigid bracket portion 30 of the connecting section 34 also comprises second lugs 42 extending vertically upwards from the horizontal upper face 43 of the base 35. The lugs 42 are intended to engage in chambers 16 of the upright 14 of the frame in order to immobilize it horizontally in the mounted position relative to the threshold connector 10, as illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4.

[0079] The rigid bracket portion 30 of the connecting section 34 also comprises second screw barrels 44 which pass through it vertically at the level of the upright portion 14 which rests on the base 35, as shown in [Fig. 5]. The second screw barrels 44 are intended to receive fixing screws intended to be screwed into the upright 14 to guarantee the fixing between the threshold connector 10 and the upright 14 in the mounted position. For this purpose, the upright 14 comprises screw sockets 46 arranged opposite the second screw barrels 44 in the mounted position, as can be seen in [Fig. 1].

[0080] The portion of the sealing joint 32 which extends over the upper face 43 of the base 35 has strips forming a frame which is arranged opposite the edges 22 and / or the lower ends of certain partitions 20 of the upright 14. Thus, the sealing joint 32 is compressed between the upper face 43 of the base 35 and the edges 22 and / or the ends of partitions 20 to ensure the sealing of the upright 14, as illustrated in [Fig. 6] on which the upright 14 is shown transparently in broken lines.

[0081] The sealing joint 32 further has a tongue 48 which extends transversely in a cantilever manner from the base 35. This tongue 48 is intended to be compressed directly between the outer edge 29A of the threshold profile 12 and the lower end of the striking wing 23.

[0082] Furthermore, a portion of the sealing gasket 32 also extends over the lateral face 37 of the base 35 as shown in [Fig. 2]. Thus, when mounting the threshold profile 12, the sealing gasket 32 can be compressed between the threshold profile 12 and the base 35 to ensure the sealing of the threshold profile 12, as illustrated in [Fig. 7] in which the threshold profile 12 is shown transparently in broken lines.

[0083] In a variant of the invention not shown, to guarantee an optimal compression rate of the sealing joint 32, the second barrels 44 are for example equipped with metal inserts called "compression limiters", against which the head of the screws is intended to be tightened. These compression limiters make it possible to obtain a standardized and repeatable tightening torque of the screws independently of the plasticity of the material constituting the rigid bracket 30. The compression rate is for example 70%.

[0084] The threshold connector 10 is intended to be associated with uprights 14 which may have a longitudinal wing 49 which extends outwards from the striking wing 23, as shown in [Fig.l].

[0085] The threshold connector 10 also comprises a section 50 for closing the wing 48 of the upright which extends longitudinally in the extension of the connecting section 34 projecting in an external longitudinal direction relative to the base 35, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 5.

[0086] The rigid square part 30 of the plugging section 50 forms a long tongue 52 tudinal having a thickness much less than that of the base 35, for example of the order of a few millimeters. The tongue 52 extends just below the level of the tab 48 of the sealing joint 32. The tongue 52 is flat in a horizontal plane.

[0087] The tongue 52 is provided on its upper face with third lugs 54 for fitting into the longitudinal wing 49 of the upright 14. The lugs 54 are here distributed regularly over the entire length of the tongue 52.

[0088] The part of the sealing joint 32 belonging to the plugging section 50 extends around the periphery of the upper face of the tongue 52 so as to be compressed between the lower peripheral edge 22 of the longitudinal wing 49 and the upper face of the tongue 52, as shown in [Fig.7].

[0089] The sealing joint 32 is here made in one piece, that is to say that all the parts of the sealing joint 32 are joined to each other.

[0090] The sealing joint portion 32 arranged on the closure section 50 more precisely comprises two longitudinal strips 55 arranged on each longitudinal edge of the tongue 52. It further comprises a transverse end strip 56 joining the two longitudinal strips 55. The transverse end strip 56 extends over the free longitudinal end edge of the tongue 52.

[0091] The threshold connector 10 is intended to be able to be associated with uprights 14 which may have longitudinal wings 49 of different predetermined lengths, or even no longitudinal wing 49.

[0092] For this purpose, it is provided to be able to adapt the length of the tongue 52 by cutting it to one of said predetermined lengths. To allow good sealing to be maintained between the threshold connector 10 and the longitudinal end of the longitudinal wing 49 when the latter is shorter than the total length of the tongue 52, it is provided to equip the sealing joint 32 with several intermediate transverse strips 58. These transverse strips 58 are parallel to the end transverse strip 55. Each intermediate transverse strip 58 extends between the two opposite longitudinal strips 55. Each of these intermediate transverse strips 58 is arranged at one of said predetermined lengths.

[0093] As shown in [Fig.8], the tongue 52 has on its lower face, intended to rest on the ground, transverse hollow break lines 60 arranged at right angles to an outer edge of the intermediate transverse joint strips 58 to allow the tongue 52 to be easily cut to the desired length. Furthermore, in the case where the upright 14 is completely devoid of a longitudinal wing 49, one of the transverse hollow lines 60, here the outer end hollow line 60A, is arranged at the junction between the tongue 52 and the connecting section 34.

[0094] As shown in [Fig.5], the longitudinal strips 55 of the sealing joint portion 32 equipping the tongue 52 also comprise breaking notches 62. arranged at the hollow break lines 60, 60A to allow the seal to be easily cut to the desired length. These break notches 62 are arranged at the junction between the longitudinal strip 55 and the outer edge of each intermediate transverse strip 58.

[0095] It is thus possible to break the tongue 52 and the seal 32 which covers it to the correct length, for example by using pliers to break the tongue 52 by bending it. The hollow lines 60, 60A and the notches 62 then form the beginnings of breaks.

[0096] Alternatively, it is also possible to cut the tongue 52 using a saw or equivalent. The hollow lines 60, 60A and the notches 62 then form visual markers.

[0097] The third lugs 54 are distributed on the upper face of the tongue 52 so that the longitudinal wing 49 of the upright 14 is always held firmly in the mounted position on the tongue 52, whatever its length.

[0098] Furthermore, to allow the fixing of the plug section 50 to the upright 14, the tongue 52 comprises third screw barrels 64 which are inclined relative to the vertical direction. They are for example inclined between 30° and 60°. They are inclined in a longitudinal vertical plane so that a screw can be screwed directly into an internal partition 20 of the longitudinal wing 49. This avoids having to provide screw-receiving cells in the longitudinal wing 49.

[0099] The method of mounting an upright 14 with a threshold profile 12 by means of the threshold connector 10 produced according to the teachings of the invention is now described.

[0100] This is an upright 14 having a longitudinal wing 49 of length equal to the length of the tongue 52. Thus, the tongue 52 does not need to be cut.

[0101] As shown in [Fig. 3], the lower end of the upright 14 is first fitted vertically with the second lugs 42 and with the third lugs 54 until the lower edge 22 of the upright rests on the base 35, the sealing gasket 32 being interposed between the base 35 and the edge 22. Screws are then screwed into the second screw barrels 44 and into the third screw barrels 64 to fix the threshold connector 10 to the upright 14. The lower end of the upright 14 is thus sealed by the threshold connector 10.

[0102] To prevent the tab 48 of the sealing gasket 32 from hanging freely under the striking wing 23, it is also held in position by screwing. For this purpose, the tab 48 here comprises a screwing orifice 66 and the striking wing 23 comprises a screw socket 68 arranged opposite the screwing orifice 66.

[0103] Then, as shown in [Fig.4], the threshold profile 12 is fitted with the lugs 36 of the connecting section 34 of the threshold connector 10 until the end of the threshold profile 12 is in abutment against the lateral face 37 of the base 35 with interposition of the sealing gasket 32.

[0104] Screws are then screwed into the first screw barrels 42 to fix the threshold connector 10 to the threshold profile 12. The transverse end of the threshold profile 12 is thus sealed by the threshold connector 10.

[0105] Thus, the threshold connector 10 made in a single piece allows the fixing at right angles of the upright 14 with the threshold profile 12 while ensuring the sealing of the upright 14 and that of the threshold profile 12.

[0106] To prevent the threshold connector 10 from being visible from the outside of the frame, the lower end of the upright 14 has a cutout that is not flat. Thus, the face of the upright 14 that is turned longitudinally outwards descends to the tongue 52 which is arranged lower than the upper face 43 of the base 35.

[0107] Advantageously, for aesthetic reasons, it is preferable to prevent the threshold connector 10 from being visible from the inside. For this purpose, the upright 14 here comprises an inner longitudinal end wall 70 which extends downwards below the level of the upper face 43 of the base 35 when the upright 14 is in the mounted position on the threshold connector 10. Preferably, the longitudinal end wall 70 of the upright 14 extends so as to completely conceal the threshold connector 10 when the upright 14 is in the mounted position on the threshold connector 10.

[0108] Furthermore, as indicated previously, it is possible to use this same threshold connector 10 in association with an upright 14 having a shorter, or even non-existent, longitudinal wing 49 as is the case in the example shown in [Fig.9].

[0109] To enable the threshold connector 10 to be adapted to the shape of the upright 14, the plugging section 50 must then be cut to the required dimension before mounting the threshold connector 10 in the upright 14. Once this adaptation operation has been carried out, the mounting operations are similar to those described previously.

[0110] Thus, in addition to the advantages provided by a threshold connector 10 made in a single piece ensuring both the connection and the sealing, the threshold connector 10 made according to the teachings of the invention is adaptable to several models of uprights 14. Thus, the production costs of the threshold connector 10 can be reduced and the storage and handling of the threshold connector 10 are greatly simplified.
