Description

Title of the invention: Electrical insulation device for an energy storage device

[0001] The present invention relates to an electrical insulation device for an energy storage device. The invention also relates to an electrical energy storage device comprising such an electrical insulation device and a vehicle comprising such an electrical insulation device and / or such an energy storage device.

[0002] In electric or hybrid vehicles, current electric motorization means use increasingly efficient electric battery devices in order to compete with thermal engines. Conventionally, these battery devices comprise a plurality of electrochemical cells arranged in one or more modules included in at least one energy storage device. These cells can be cylindrical, prismatic or flexible cells.

[0003] The flexible cells have conductive tabs that allow an electric current to be carried. When the electrochemical cells are arranged in one or more modules, the conductive tabs of two neighboring cells overlap at least partially. These overlapping conductive tabs are then brought into contact with each other and welded together to allow the electric current to pass through all of the cells thus connected. The conductive tabs welded together then form a pair of conductive tabs.

[0004] In order to minimize the bulk of the energy storage devices within which the electrochemical cells are arranged, these cells are arranged one after the other so as to form rows and columns inside a housing of the energy storage device.

[0005] Although this arrangement optimizes compactness, it also involves proximity of the cells to their conductive tabs. There is then a risk of electric arcs occurring between pairs of conductive tabs if they are too close to each other. Furthermore, when the conductive tabs are stressed with an electric current, they tend to heat up and need to be cooled to ensure optimal operation.

[0006] Thus, a first objective of the present invention is to electrically insulate the pairs of cell tabs from each other. A second objective of the present invention is to allow thermal regulation of the cell tabs, in particular to cool said cell tabs.

[0007] To this end, the invention proposes an electrical insulation device made of material insulator for an energy storage device, the electrical insulation device being characterized in that it comprises at least one cavity intended to be arranged between two pairs of electrically conductive tabs of two neighboring cells, said at least one cavity comprising walls delimiting an internal volume to accommodate therein a thermal conduction product for cooling the cell tabs, and characterized in that the electrical insulation device also comprises a lip arrangement comprising at least one flexible edge configured to be deformed so as to press on a surface of the cell tabs.

[0008] According to a particular embodiment, the bases of the lips are integral with the walls which delimit the internal volume of the cavity.

[0009] According to a particular embodiment, the lips extend obliquely relative to the walls of the cavity so as to define an angle of inclination between said lips and the surface of the walls of the cavity.

[0010] According to a particular embodiment, the angle of inclination between the lips and the surface of the walls of the cavity is between 25° and 75°, or even 30° and 60°, or even equal to 45°.

[0011] According to a particular embodiment, the lips have a constant thickness or a variable thickness.

[0012] According to a particular embodiment, there is a gap between two neighboring lips, said gap being intended to be filled by a pair of cell tabs welded together, so that the edges of the lips press on said pair of tabs welded together.

[0013] According to a particular embodiment, the clearance between two neighboring lips is between 0.2 mm and 2 mm, or even between 0.3 mm and 1.5 mm.

[0014] The invention also relates to an energy storage device comprising a housing inside which at least one electrochemical cell is arranged, the energy storage device being characterized in that it comprises at least one electrical insulation device as described previously.

[0015] According to a particular embodiment, the energy storage device comprises at least one guide device configured to ensure the positioning of the electrical insulation device inside the housing.

[0016] According to a particular embodiment, the at least one electrochemical cell disposed inside the housing is configured to cooperate with a voltage measuring bar fixed to a pair of tabs of the at least one cell, the voltage measuring bar comprising a first end bent so as to be held in place by the electrical insulation device and a second end in the form of a hook so as to optimize the flow of the thermal product inside the cavity.

[0017] According to a particular embodiment, the energy storage device comprises a multitude of electrochemical cells arranged in rows and columns inside the housing, and an electrical isolation device is arranged between two columns of neighboring electrochemical cells and / or another electrical isolation device is arranged at one end of the energy storage device.

[0018] The invention further relates to a motor vehicle with an electric or hybrid motor comprising a body structure and an energy storage device as described above.

[0019] These objects, characteristics and advantages of the present invention will be explained in detail in the following description of different particular embodiments made without limitation in relation to the attached figures among which:

[0026] [Fig.7] is another schematic cross-sectional representation of the energy storage device including an electrical isolation device.

[0028] [Fig.9] is another schematic sectional representation of an embodiment of an energy storage device comprising an electrical isolation device according to the invention.

[0029] [Fig. 10] is a schematic representation in perspective view of the electrical isolation device of [Fig. 9].

[0030] [Fig.l] schematically illustrates an exemplary embodiment of a vehicle 1, particularly a motor vehicle with an electric or hybrid engine comprising at least one electric motor, not shown. The vehicle 1 considered may be of any type, for example a private vehicle or a utility vehicle.

[0031] The vehicle 1 comprises at least one electrical energy storage device 10, which may also be called a “battery” or “electric battery”. Such a energy storage device 10 is intended for a battery device, or electrical energy storage device, of the vehicle 1. For example, the battery device comprises at least one energy storage device according to the invention or a plurality of said modules. The battery device, and by extension the at least one energy storage device 10, is an electric traction or motor battery, adapted to supply electrical energy to various components of the vehicle 1, including the electric motor of the vehicle 1.

[0032] The vehicle 1 also comprises a body structure 11, at which the at least one energy storage device 10, or more generally the battery device, is fixed.

[0033] Throughout the figures, the dimensions and spacings separating the various components may be exaggerated for the sake of clarity. Furthermore, in the description below, the terms “first” and “second” are intended to distinguish the various elements of the invention and not to establish a hierarchy among them.

[0034] The body structure 11, or chassis, is a structure capable of supporting different components of the vehicle 1. It has, for example, a frame shape, that is to say it forms a closed frame.

[0035] Generally, the energy storage device 10 comprises a housing 2 and at least one electrochemical cell 12, arranged inside said housing 2. The following description is given with reference to a specific energy storage device 10 and to the housing 2 associated with it. It is nevertheless understood that the invention can extend to a plurality of battery modules or housings 2.

[0036] [Fig. 2] schematically illustrates an exemplary embodiment of a housing 2 of an energy storage device 10. The housing 2 generally comprises a base 3, a cover 4, removable and attached relative to the base 3, and at least one fixing lug 5 of the housing 2 within the vehicle 1, configured to allow the fixing of the housing 2 and of the energy storage device 10 at the level of the body structure 11, in particular under the body structure 11.

[0037] The base 3 comprises a plurality of walls and is open on one side so as to allow the insertion of the at least one electrochemical cell 12. Therefore, here, “open on one side” means that one of the walls is missing and that the base does not form a closed structure. For example, the plurality of walls comprises at least one bottom wall 31 as well as two side walls 32 arranged opposite each other and two end walls 33 also arranged opposite each other. The two side walls 32 and the two end walls 33 are connected to the bottom wall 31 and extend transversely thereto. Thus, in a non-limiting manner, the base 3 may have a parallelepiped shape. For example, the base 3 is made of a metallic material, such as aluminum, an alloy comprising 3000 or 600 series aluminum. Alternatively, the material for base 3 can be a polymer or a composite.

[0038] The cover 4 comprises at least one main flank 41 configured to be mounted on the base 3 so as to close the housing 2. The cover 4 is thus configured to be mounted at the open side of the base 3 so as to delimit the internal volume of the housing 2 and to close the base 3. Optionally but preferably, the cover 4 also comprises a plurality of lateral flanks 42, connected to the main flank 41 and extending transversely, or even orthogonally thereto.

[0039] In a known manner, the at least one electrochemical cell 12 may be of the flexible prismatic type, also known as the “pouch” type. “Prismatic” means that the electrochemical cell 12 may have a parallelepiped or substantially parallelepiped shape, in particular a rectangular or square parallelepiped, or even a cubic shape. Each electrochemical cell 12 is capable of storing energy in chemical form and of restoring it in the form of an electric current.

[0040] Indeed, each electrochemical cell comprises two conductive tabs 14 capable of transmitting an electric current. The tabs 14 are located in particular on opposite edges of the electrochemical cell 12 and protrude relative to the edges of said cell 12.

[0041] The electrochemical cells may, for example, be of the “lithium-ion” type, also called “Li-ion”. The energy storage device 10 comprises at least one electrochemical cell 12. It is nevertheless understood, as illustrated, that the energy storage device 10 may comprise a plurality of electrochemical cells 12, the number and dimensions of said cells 12 being in no way limiting.

[0042] In the case where the energy storage device 10 comprises a plurality of electrochemical cells 12, a tab 14 of a first cell 12 is welded to a second tab 14 of a second cell 12 adjacent to the first cell 12. The contact between the two tabs 14 which thus form a pair of tabs 14 makes it possible to circulate the electric current through the two electrochemical cells 12. The cooperation between two tabs 14 of two adjacent electrochemical cells 12 is notably illustrated in [Fig. 3].

[0043] In [Fig. 4] is shown the energy storage device 10 of [Fig. 2], equipped with at least one electrical insulation device 100 according to the invention. The energy storage device 10 illustrated in [Fig. 4] comprises an arrangement of several electrochemical cells 12 arranged inside the housing 2. The electrochemical cells 12 are for example arranged in rows and columns, thus promoting a compact arrangement. In [Fig. 4], three columns and several tens of rows of electrochemical cells 12 can be distinguished. According to the invention, a An electrical insulation device 100 is arranged between two adjacent columns of electrochemical cells 12. In the embodiment illustrated in [Fig. 4], two electrical insulation devices 100 are thus arranged in the spaces between the three columns of electrochemical cells 12.

[0044] Electrical insulation devices 100 may also be arranged between the end walls 33 of the base 3 of the housing 2 and the columns of electrochemical cells 12 located at the ends of the energy storage device 10.

[0045] Each electrical insulation device 100 made of insulating material is arranged so as to cover the pairs of tabs 14 aligned between the columns of electrochemical cells 12. The electrical insulation device 100 made of insulating material can in particular be mounted within the housing 2 by inserting said device 100 between the columns of electrochemical cells 12 and over the pairs of tabs 14, as illustrated in [Fig.8]. The electrical insulation devices 100 therefore make it possible to isolate the pairs of tabs 14 from each other, they thus prevent potential electric arcs.

[0046] In the embodiments described here, the electrical insulation devices 100 are single-piece. They can in particular be produced by plastic injection.

[0047] Generally, the electrical insulation device 100 comprises at least one cavity 110 intended to be arranged between two pairs of electrically conductive tabs 14 of two neighboring cells 12. This cavity 110 comprises walls 115 which delimit an internal volume of the cavity 110 configured to accommodate a thermal conduction product therein. The thermal conduction product in the cavity 115 makes it possible to thermally regulate the pairs of tabs 14 and more particularly to cool them.

[0048] A thickness E of the electrical insulation device 100 is less than the spacing between two columns of neighboring cells 12, this is notably illustrated in Figures 5 and 6.

[0049] The height H of the electrical insulation device 100 is at least equal to the height of the tabs 14 of the cells 12, or even greater than the latter. According to an embodiment illustrated in [Fig.7], the height H of the electrical insulation device 100 may be similar to the height of the electrochemical cells 12. According to the embodiment illustrated in [Fig.7], a lower part of the electrical insulation device 100 rests on a plate 15 arranged at the bottom of the housing 2 of the module 10 while an upper part of the electrical insulation device 100 is located near the upper edges of the cells 12. In the embodiment of [Fig.7], the at least one cavity 110 of the electrical insulation device 100 extends over the entire height H of the electrical insulation device 100.

[0050] The length L of the electrical insulation device 100 may be of the same order of size as the width of the housing 2 of the energy storage device 10 inside which the electrochemical cells 12 are arranged. However, the length L of the electrical insulation device 100 depends on the number of rows of cells 12 arranged inside the housing 2 of the energy storage device 10. Indeed, the electrical insulation device 100 may comprise a plurality of cavities 110. Thus, according to a preferred embodiment of the device 100, it comprises as many cavities 110 as there are spaces between the pairs of tabs 14 of the cells 12 arranged in the housing 2 of the energy storage device 10. Such an embodiment is notably illustrated in FIGS. 5 to 10.

[0051] According to a preferred embodiment, the walls 115 which delimit the internal volume of the cavity 110 give it a parallelepiped geometry. More precisely, four walls 115 are arranged so as to delimit the cavity 110 which has a rectangular section. As illustrated in FIGS. 5 to 10, the cavity or cavities 110 of the electrical insulation device 100 have walls 115 with constant thicknesses. The walls 115 have, for example, a thickness of between 1 mm and 1.5 mm.

[0052] Furthermore, the walls 115 may have thicknesses that are identical or different from each other and / or lengths that are identical or different from each other.

[0053] As indicated previously, the walls 115 of a cavity 110 delimit an internal volume configured to accommodate a thermal conduction product making it possible to cool by convection the pairs of tabs 14 of two neighboring cells 12. According to a particular embodiment, the thermal conduction product is a polymerizable solution.

[0054] The thermal conduction product may in particular be in the form of a fluid or a gel or a foam. The thermal conduction product inserted into the cavity or cavities of the electrical insulation device 100 makes it possible to thermally regulate the pairs of conductive tabs 14 connected to each other, thereby cooling them, which makes it possible to limit the risks of overheating at the level of these electrical connections. According to a preferred embodiment, the thermal conduction product is intended to remain static inside the internal volume of the cavity 110 delimited by the walls 115.

[0055] As indicated previously, a lower part of the electrical insulation device 100 rests on a plate 15 arranged at the bottom of the housing 2 of the module 10. This plate 15 is coupled to a cooling circuit which makes it possible to limit the rise in temperature inside the housing 2 of the energy storage device 10. The thermal conduction product inserted into the cavity or cavities 110 of the electrical insulation device 100 is also in contact with this plate 15. In this way, the thermal conduction product can convey the coolness brought by the cooling circuit coupled to the plate 15 towards the cavity 110 in order to cool the pairs of tabs 14 of the electrochemical cells 12.

[0056] Furthermore, the electrical insulation device 100 comprises an arrangement of lips 120 comprising at least one flexible edge, said flexible edge being configured to be deformed so as to press on a surface of the tabs 14 of cells 12 arranged within the energy storage device housing 10.

[0057] Advantageously, the bases of the lips 120 can be integral with the walls 115 which delimit the internal volume of the cavity 110. According to the embodiment illustrated in [Fig. 5], four lips 120 extend from the corners of each cavity 110 in the direction of the pairs of tabs 14 of cells 12 between which the cavity 110 in question is arranged.

[0058] Optionally but preferably, the lip(s) 120 of the electrical insulation device 100 may extend over the entire height H of the electrical insulation device 100.

[0059] According to a preferred embodiment of the electrical insulation device 100, the lips 120 extend obliquely relative to the walls 115 of the cavities 110 so as to define an angle of inclination between said lips 120 and the surface of the walls 115 of the cavities 110.

[0060] More particularly, the angle of inclination between the lips 120 and the surface of the walls of a cavity 110 is between 25° and 75°, or even 30° and 60°, or even equal to 45°.

[0061] The edge of the lips 120 is flexible and elastic, so that it can be deformed when the electrical insulation device 100 is placed inside the housing 2 of the energy storage device 10. This elasticity allows the lips 120 to exert pressure on the tabs 14 with which their flexible edges are brought into contact. Thus, the edge of the lips 120 presses against the surfaces of the tabs 14 when the electrical insulation device 100 is mounted in the electrical energy storage device 10. In the embodiment of the electrical insulation device 100 illustrated in FIGS. 5 to 10, four distinct lip edges are in contact with the same pair of tabs 14 of a cell 12. In this configuration, the electrical insulation device 100 has an alternation between the cavities 110 and the lips 120.

[0062] The lips 120 of the electrical insulation device 100 make it possible to maintain a clearance between the different pairs of tabs 14 of cells 12 so as to isolate them from each other. The lips 120 of the electrical insulation device 100 can also hold the pairs of tabs 14 in their place inside the housing 2 of the module 10, so as to prevent the tabs 14 from moving in the event of an impact against said housing.

[0063] A clearance can be observed between two neighboring lips 120 intended to be in contact on either side of the same pair of tabs 14, the dimension of this clearance between two neighboring lips 120 depends on the dimensions of the tabs 14 and on the way in which the electrochemical cells 12 are arranged in the housing 2 of the module 10. For information purposes, the clearance between two neighboring lips 120 can be between 0.2 mm and 2 mm, or even between 0.3 mm and 1.5 mm. According to one embodiment, the clearance can be equal to 0.8 mm.

[0064] According to the embodiment of the electrical insulation device 100 illustrated in FIGS. 2 to 10, the thickness of the lips 120 is less than the thickness of the walls 115 which delimit the internal volume of a cavity 110. The lips 120 may have a constant thickness. Alternatively, the lips 120 may have a variable thickness. By “variable thickness” is meant that the edge of the lips 120 is thinner than the base of the lips 120. For information purposes, the thickness of the lips 120 is for example less than 1 mm, and more particularly between 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm.

[0065] According to an optional but preferred embodiment, the housing 2 may comprise at least one guide device 140 configured to ensure the positioning of the electrical insulation device 100 inside the housing 2. According to a particular example, two side walls 32 of the housing may each comprise a guide device 140 in the form of a rail which is configured to cooperate with at least one groove 150 arranged at one end of the electrical insulation device 100 so as to ensure the positioning of the electrical insulation device 100 inside the housing 2. Such guide devices 140 and such grooves 150 are in particular represented in the embodiment illustrated in [Fig. 5].

[0066] According to a particular embodiment illustrated in [Fig. 5], the grooves 150 at the ends of the electrical insulation device 100 have a “U” shape. These grooves 150 are configured to cooperate with the guide device(s) 140 arranged on the side walls 32 of the housing 2 so as to guide the translation of the electrical insulation device 100 inside the battery module 10 when the latter is positioned.

[0067] When the electrical insulation device 100 is mounted inside the housing 2, the guide devices 140 are then nested in the “U”-shaped grooves 150 located at the ends of the electrical insulation device 100, which can contribute to maintaining the electrical insulation device 100 in position inside the housing 2.

[0068] Furthermore, the at least one electrochemical cell 12 disposed inside the housing may be configured to cooperate with a voltage measuring bar 130 attached to a pair of tabs 14 of the at least one cell 12. More specifically, a voltage measuring bar 130 may be attached to at least one pair of tabs 14 of cells 12 to enable measurement of the voltage at said pair of tabs 14. In the embodiments illustrated in Figures 7 and 8, all pairs of tabs 14 of cells 12 are each equipped with such a voltage measuring bar 130. The voltage measuring bars 130 are for example welded to one face of a tab 14 of cell 12.

[0069] The electrical insulation device 100 can then be configured to cooperate with the voltage measuring bar(s) 130 fixed to the pairs of tabs 14 of cells 12. For this purpose, each voltage measuring bar 130 comprises for example a first end 132 bent so as to be held in place by the electrical insulation device 100. Thus, in the embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8, the first end 132 of each voltage measuring bar 130 is bent to form a right angle, so that the first bent end 132 can rest on a wall edge 115 of the electrical insulation device 100.

[0070] Optionally but preferably, the voltage measuring bar 130 may also comprise a second hook-shaped end 134. An example of a voltage measuring bar assembly 130 comprising such second hook-shaped ends 134 is illustrated in particular in [Fig. 7]. Optionally, the hook-shaped ends 134 may be in contact with the plate 15 coupled to the cooling circuit so as to promote heat transfer via the bars 130 to the pairs of tabs 14 to be cooled. The measuring bars 130 are for example made of a material which promotes heat conduction, such as a metallic material.

[0071] It will be noted that the electrical insulation devices 100 arranged between the end wall 31 of the base 3 of the housing 2 at the ends of the energy storage device 10 and the columns of electrochemical cells 12 located at the ends of the energy storage device 10 have a slightly different geometry from the electrical insulation devices 100 located between two columns of electrochemical cells 12. In particular, the internal volume of the cavities 110 for the electrical insulation devices 100 arranged at the ends of the energy storage device 10 is less than the internal volume of the cavities 110 for the electrical insulation devices 100 arranged between two columns of electrochemical cells 12.

[0072] Unlike the case of the electrical insulation devices 100 arranged between two columns of electrochemical cells 12 for which the bases of the lips 120 are integral with the walls 115 which delimit the internal volume of the cavity 110, the electrical insulation devices 100 arranged at the ends of the energy storage device 10 have at least one additional wall 117 arranged between two neighboring cavities 110. This additional wall 117 carries on its edges the lips 120 intended to press on the surfaces of the tabs 14 of the pairs of electrochemical cells 12.

[0073] An example of an embodiment of an electrical insulation device 100 intended to be arranged at one end of the energy storage device 10 is more particularly illustrated in [Fig. 10]. In this [Fig. 10], each of the cavities 110 is bordered by an additional wall 117 which carries the lips 120 on its edges.

[0074] This same embodiment of the electrical insulation device 100 is shown in the configuration mounted in the module 10 in the sectional view of [Fig. 9]. In this sectional view of [Fig. 9] is illustrated the manner in which the edges of the lips 120 carried by the additional walls 117 press on the surfaces of the tabs 14 of the pairs of cells 12. It will be noted that the tabs 14 of the pairs of cells 12 arranged at the ends of the energy storage device 10 are folded so as to form a “U”, which makes it possible to ensure passage of an electric current from one row of cells 12 to another via the tabs 14.

[0075] In this configuration, the additional walls 117 which carry the lips 120 are arranged in the hollow of the “U”s formed by the folded tabs 14. Each pair of folded tabs 14 is thus in contact with two lips 120 carried by the same additional wall 117. Furthermore, each cavity 110 of this electrical insulation device 100 is then arranged in a space between two pairs of folded tabs 14 of two cells 12 of two distinct rows adjacent to each other.

[0076] The present invention thus proposes different embodiments of an electrical insulation device 100 for an energy storage device 10 making it possible to simultaneously cool the tabs 14 of cells 12 while electrically insulating the pairs of tabs 14 of cells 12, thus preventing the occurrence of potential electric arcs.

[0077] The present invention cannot, however, be limited to the means and configurations described and illustrated here and it also extends to any equivalent means or configuration and to any technically operative combination of such means insofar as they ultimately fulfill the functionalities described and illustrated in the present document.
