Description

Title of the invention: Pre-assembled unfoldable cardboard packaging

[0001] The present invention relates to a pre-assembled, unfoldable cardboard packaging suitable for being folded into a volume and then closed to be locked.

[0002] One area of application envisaged is, in particular, but not exclusively, mail order sales where it is necessary to quickly package the shipped products and to ensure that the packaging is locked.

[0003] Known packaging, of the “American box” type, comprises two longitudinal walls held parallel to each other by two transverse walls parallel to each other and respectively hinged on the two longitudinal walls. Thus, the two longitudinal walls are adapted to be carried perpendicular to the transverse walls, defining a receiving volume.

[0004] They further comprise a bottom wall mounted hinged on one of the longitudinal walls so as to be able to engage oppositely with the other longitudinal wall. Also, the other longitudinal wall comprises another hinged bottom wall, while the two transverse walls comprise two walls cut obliquely and connected respectively to said other bottom wall and to said one bottom wall. When the packaging is folded, the bottom walls and the two obliquely cut walls are folded against each other between the two longitudinal walls and the two transverse walls, which are themselves brought closer to each other, the transverse walls being substantially parallel to the longitudinal walls.When the packaging is unfolded, the transverse walls are carried substantially perpendicular to the side walls and at the same time, the other bottom wall and the two obliquely cut walls unfold automatically, forming a support for said bottom wall which itself is automatically applied there.

[0005] In addition, such packages comprise a lid wall hingedly mounted on said one of the longitudinal walls opposite the bottom wall so as to be able to also engage with the other longitudinal wall. Also, the lid wall extends by a hinged locking flap having a self-adhesive strip so as to be able to be applied against the other longitudinal wall and sealed there.

[0006] While such packaging can be stored folded easily, then unfolded and quickly expanded to be filled, and then closed to be shipped, at relatively high rates, they require the use of adhesives, making their recycling more complex.

[0007] Also, a problem which arises and which the present invention aims to solve is to provide packaging which allows its recycling to be simplified.

[0008] In order to solve this problem, and according to a first object, a pre-assembled unfoldable cardboard packaging comprising: two first walls held parallel to each other by two second walls parallel to each other respectively hinged on said two first walls, said two first walls being adapted to be carried perpendicular to said second walls while defining a receiving volume; a third wall having two opposite faces and mounted hinged on one of said two first walls to be able to engage with the other of said two first walls while forming a bottom, one of said two opposite faces extending opposite said receiving volume;a fourth wall mounted hinged on said one of said two first walls opposite said third wall so as to be able to engage with the other of said two first walls, forming a cover, said fourth wall extending by a first hinged flap so as to be able to be applied against the other of said two first walls.;

[0009] Also, said third wall has, opposite said one of said first walls, a first tab folded against said one of said two opposite faces to form a first hooking shoulder, while said first flap has, opposite said fourth wall, a second tab partially folded back on itself to form a second hooking shoulder. And said second tab is adapted to be engaged through said other of said two first walls to come opposite said one of said two faces so that said first and second shoulders engage with each other.

[0010] Thus, a characteristic of the invention lies in the implementation of a first tab folded against the edge of the third wall, opposite the receiving volume, while the first flap has a second tab partially folded back on itself, so as to be able to engage the second tab through the other of said two first walls, and under the third wall forming a bottom, to be able to make the shoulders of the two tabs cooperate together. The two shoulders come into abutment against each other in return and then make it possible to prevent the removal of the second tab. Thus, the first flap is locked in application against the other of said two first walls.

[0011] Furthermore, it will be observed that the second tab can be freely engaged under the third wall forming a bottom, without being hindered by the contents of the receiving volume.

[0012] In this way, the packaging is mechanically locked without the use of self-adhesive film. The entire packaging can then be recycled in a single way.

[0013] Also, the packaging according to the invention advantageously comprises a second flap articulated on said other of said two first walls along a first line. hinge to be able to be applied against said one of said two opposite faces. In other words, when the first two walls are unfolded and carried perpendicular to the second walls, the third wall can come to bear on the second flap which itself is held perpendicular to the other of said first two walls with which it is integral, by means which will be detailed below. In this way, the second tab is engaged between the third wall and the second flap. Also, the second tab is held in engagement between the third wall and the second flap, so that the second shoulder cannot escape the reach of the first shoulder as will be explained in more detail in the remainder of the description.

[0014] Furthermore, preferably, said other of said two first walls has a slot along said first hinge line to be able to engage said second tab. Thus, the second tab is engaged through the slot, and between the third wall and the second flap.

[0015] Furthermore, the packaging according to the invention comprises two third notched flaps, respectively hinged on said second walls and respectively connected laterally to said third wall and to said second flap. As will be explained below, the two third flaps are identical, and they have a notched side and an opposite obliquely foldable side. This obliquely foldable side is then glued, for one of the third flaps, to the third wall, for the other, to the second flap.

[0016] As will be explained in more detail in the remainder of the description, such an arrangement makes it possible to automatically deploy the three flaps and the third wall which then comes to bear on them, when the first walls and the second walls are carried perpendicular to each other.

[0017] The flaps thus partially intersect under the third wall and thus provide relatively significant mechanical resistance to deformation.

[0018] Furthermore, the packaging comprises two fourth flaps respectively hinged on said second walls opposite said two third flaps. These two fourth flaps make it possible to cover the products installed in the receiving volume and thus to preserve them. Furthermore, these two fourth flaps also make it possible to stiffen the packaging when they are folded down.

[0019] Preferably, the packaging according to the invention comprises a fifth flap hinged on said other of said two first walls opposite said second flap. This fifth flap can then be folded down against the two fourth flaps already folded down on the products installed in the receiving volume. In this way, both their protection is increased and also the packaging is further stiffened.

[0020] According to a particularly advantageous characteristic of the invention, said first tab is glued against said one of said two opposite faces. In this way, the first tab remains applied against said one of said two opposite faces, in its edge. Consequently, the first shoulder remains upright on this surface, opposite the receiving volume.

[0021] Furthermore, the second tab, partially folded back on itself, is not glued. Indeed, thanks to the resilience of the cardboard, the folded part remains inclined relative to the rest of the tab, and this is an advantage. Because, when the second tab is driven through said slot between the third wall provided with the first shoulder and the second flap, the folded part comes to bear against the rest of the tab. On the other hand, at the end of its travel, when the folded part extends beyond the first shoulder, the folded part tends to unfold to come to bear against the surface of the third wall, opposite the receiving volume. Consequently, the second shoulder comes to extend opposite the first shoulder and the movement of the second tab in the opposite direction is then prohibited, since the two shoulders come into abutment against each other.The second tab is thus kept locked inside between the third wall and the second flap.

[0022] Furthermore, said third wall preferably has, opposite said one of said first walls, an anchoring tab adapted to engage in said other of said two first walls. The anchoring tab can engage in return, in said slot. Preferably, said other of said two first walls has a substantial step in line with the anchoring tab to maintain the third wall transversely in a fixed position.

[0023] According to another object, the invention relates to a cardboard blank for producing a packaging as described above. It comprises: a longitudinal strip comprising two first panels separated from each other by a first second panel and a second second panel adjoining one of said first panels opposite said first second panel; a third panel adjoining transversely to one of said first panels, on one side of said longitudinal strip; a fourth panel adjoining transversely to said one of said first panels opposite said third panel, said fourth panel having a first extension. And, said third panel has, opposite said one of said first panels, a first projecting extension, while said first extension has, opposite said fourth panel, a second projecting extension having a width, greater than said first extension.

[0024] The width of the second projecting extension is understood to be in a transverse direction, perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the strip. Thus, the first projecting extension will form the first folded tab and the first shoulder, while the second projecting extension will form the second folded tab par- partially on itself and the second shoulder.

[0025] In addition, the cardboard blank according to the invention further advantageously comprises a fifth panel adjoining transversely to the other of said first panels on said one side of said longitudinal strip, said other of said first panels having a thin oblong cutout along said fifth panel. Thus, the fifth panel will form said second flap and the thin oblong cutout will form said slot through which the second tab can be engaged.

[0026] Also, the blank according to the invention further comprises two sixth notched panels adjoining transversely respectively to the two second panels of said one side of said longitudinal strip. The two sixth notched panels will form the two third notched flaps respectively articulated on said second walls and they will be respectively connected laterally to said third wall and to said second flap.

[0027] Furthermore, said first projecting extension is, preferably, delimited from said third panel by a fold line, and said third panel has a U-shaped cutout comprising two opposite branches joining said fold line. In this way, when said first projecting extension is folded back to form the first tab, the U-shaped cutout then remains in a fixed position and forms said hooking tab as will be explained in more detail in the remainder of the description.

[0028] Other features and advantages of the invention will emerge from reading the description given below of a particular embodiment of the invention, given for informational purposes but not as a limitation, with reference to the appended drawings in which:

[0029] [Fig.l] is a top view of a blank according to the invention;

[0030] [Fig.2] is a schematic front right perspective view of a package according to the invention in a first state;

[0031] [Fig.3] is a schematic perspective view from above of the object of [Fig.2];

[0032] [Fig.4] is a schematic perspective view of the object of [Fig.2] in a second state; and,

[0033] [Fig.5] is a schematic sectional view of the object of [Fig.4] in a third state;

[0034] [Fig.l] shows a blank 10 made from a double-sided corrugated cardboard sheet. In other words, the blank 10 is made from a cardboard comprising fluted paper between two sheets of flat paper glued on each side. The flutes of the fluted paper are of a dimension giving, for example, a thickness to the corrugated cardboard sheet of between 1 mm and 7 mm. Such a corrugated cardboard sheet is called “rigid” or “semi-rigid”, because it can be folded manually under stress.

[0035] Thus, the blank 10 has two opposite faces, a front face 11 appearing on the [Fig.l] and a rear face 13. It comprises a longitudinal strip 12 divided into four panels: a first first panel 14 and a second first panel 16 of the same length, separated from each other by a first second panel 18 shorter than the first panels 14, 16; a second second panel 20, identical to the first second panel 18, is adjacent to the first first panel 14 opposite the first second panel 18. In other words, the first 14 and second 16 first panels are long, while the first 18 and second 20 second panels are short.

[0036] For example, the first 14 and second 16 panels have a length of between 330 mm and 360 mm, while the first 18 and second 20 panels have a length of between 240 mm and 270 mm. Their height, on the other hand, is substantially identical, and is for example between 100 mm and 130 mm.

[0037] The longitudinal strip 12 thus defines a longitudinal direction X of the blank 10 falling within the orthogonal reference frame (X, Y) shown in [Fig. 1]. It will be observed that the grooves of the blank extend in the transverse direction Y in order to obtain better mechanical strength of the packaging which will then be produced as will be explained below.

[0038] Also, the first first panel 14 is delimited from the first second panel 18 by a first transverse fold line 22, and from the second second panel 20 by a second transverse fold line 24. The second first panel 16 is delimited from the first second panel 18 by a third transverse fold line 26.

[0039] Also, the longitudinal strip 12 ends with a connecting tab 28 adjoining the second first panel 16, opposite the first second panel 18 and delimited by a fourth transverse fold line 30.

[0040] The four transverse fold lines 22, 24, 26, 30 are substantially parallel to each other.

[0041] The blank 10 also comprises a third panel 32 adjoining the first first panel 14 and extending on one side of the longitudinal strip 12 in the transverse direction Y in the aforementioned reference frame. The third panel 32 is delimited from the first first panel 14 by a first first longitudinal long fold line 34.

[0042] The third panel 32 has a first straight lateral edge 36 extending in the extension of the first transverse fold line 22, and opposite a first oblique lateral edge 38. Also, the third panel 32 has a first front edge 40, from which a first projecting extension 42 projects. This first projecting extension 42 is delimited from the third panel 32 by a first tab fold line 44, interrupted at a cutout wide U-shaped 46. The first projecting extension 42 has a first free edge 45.

[0043] Also, the third panel 32 has, on the side of the first first oblique lateral edge 38, a first first oblique fold line 48 forming an angle close to 10° with the first first oblique lateral edge 38. It will be observed that the first first oblique lateral edge 38 also extends at an angle close to 10° relative to the first first straight lateral edge 36.

[0044] The oblique side edge 38 and the oblique fold line 48 make it easier to unfold the folded packaging.

[0045] Also, it will be observed that the first front edge 40 extends from the first first long longitudinal fold line 34 by a distance substantially equal to or less than the length of the second panels 18, 20.

[0046] Opposite the third panel 32 relative to the first first panel 14, the blank 10 comprises a fourth panel 50 adjoining the first first panel 14, and extending transversely along the Y component of the aforementioned reference frame. It has two parallel straight edges extending respectively in the extension of the first and second transverse fold lines 22, 24. Also, the fourth panel 50 is delimited from the first first panel 14 by a second first long longitudinal fold line 52.

[0047] Furthermore, the blank 10 comprises, in the extension of the fourth panel 50, in the transverse direction Y, a first extension 54, of which it is delimited by a third first longitudinal fold line 56 parallel to the second first long longitudinal fold line 52 and at a distance substantially equal to or greater than the length of the second panels 18, 20. This first extension 54 will form a first flap as will be explained in more detail below.

[0048] In addition, the first extension 54 is itself extended by a second projecting extension 58, which has a width close to that of the opposite first extension 42. The second projecting extension 58 is delimited from the first extension 54 by a second tab fold line 60.

[0049] The width of the second projecting extension 58 in the transverse direction Y is greater than that of the first extension 42, for example double or triple.

[0050] Furthermore, the second projecting extension 58 has an edge 62 delimited, on the one hand by a third tab folding line 64, which is substantially parallel to the second tab folding line 60, and on the other hand by a second free edge 65.

[0051] Also, the blank 10 comprises a fifth panel 66 adjoining the second first panel 16 and extending in the transverse direction Y on the same side of the longitudinal strip 12 as the third panel 32.

[0052] The fifth panel 66 is delimited from the second first panel 16 by a first second long fold line 68. Also, the length of the fifth panel 66, along the transverse direction Y, is substantially equal to half that of the third panel 32. The fifth panel 66 will form a second flap as will be explained in the remainder of the description.

[0053] The fifth panel 66 has a second first right lateral edge 70 extending in the extension of the fourth transverse fold line 30, and opposite, a second first oblique lateral edge 72. In addition, it has, on the side of this second first oblique lateral edge 72, a second first oblique fold line 74 forming an angle close to 10° with the second first oblique lateral edge 72, the latter itself extending at an angle close to 10° relative to the second first right lateral edge 70.

[0054] Also, the second first panel 16 has a narrow oblong cutout 76 forming a slot, along the first second long fold line 68 and the fifth panel 66. This oblong cutout 76 is centered on the second first panel 16 and its length is close to half the length of the second first panel 16. In addition, the oblong cutout 76 has a median widening 78 defining two lateral stop edges, the function of which will be explained below. It will be observed that the width of this median widening 78 is substantially equal to the width of the wide U-shaped cutout 46 made in the third panel 32.

[0055] The cardboard blank 10 also comprises two identical sixth notched panels, a first 80 and a second 82, respectively adjoining the two second panels 18, 20 and extending in the transverse direction Y on the same side of the longitudinal strip 12 as the fifth 66 and third 32 panels.

[0056] The two sixth notched panels 80, 82 are respectively delimited from the first second panel 18 and from the second second panel 20 by a first short fold line 84 and a first short fold line 86.

[0057] Also, the average length of the two sixth notched panels 80, 82, along the transverse direction Y, is substantially equal to half that of the third panel 32.

[0058] Also, the first sixth panel 80 has a first second straight edge 88 adjacent to the second first oblique lateral edge 72 and opposite a first second oblique lateral edge 90, adjacent to the first straight lateral edge 36.

[0059] Furthermore, the first sixth panel 80 has, on the side of the first second straight edge 88, a first second oblique folding line 92 forming an angle close to 45° with the first first short folding line 84. In this way, the first second oblique folding line 92 isolates a first triangular portion 94 of the first sixth panel 80.

[0060] Similarly, the second sixth panel 82 has a second second edge right 96 adjacent to the first first oblique lateral edge 38 and opposite, a second second oblique lateral edge 98.

[0061] Furthermore, the second sixth panel 82 has, on the side of the second second right edge 96, a second second oblique folding line 100 forming an angle close to 45° with the first second short folding line 86. In this way, the second second oblique folding line 100 isolates a second triangular portion 102 of the second sixth panel 82.

[0062] The two sixth panels 80, 82 will form two third flaps as will be explained below.

[0063] Also, on the other side of the longitudinal strip 12, opposite the fifth panel 66, relative to the second first panel 16, the blank 10 comprises a seventh panel 104 adjoining the second first panel 16. This seventh panel 104 is delimited from the second first panel 16 by a second second long fold line 106 parallel to the first second long fold line 68. Its dimensions are close to those of the fourth panel 50.

[0064] Furthermore, the blank 10 comprises two eighth panels, a first 108 and a second 110 respectively adjoining the two second panels 18, 20 and respectively opposite the two sixth notched panels 80, 82.

[0065] The first eighth panel 108 is delimited from the first second panel 18 by a second short first fold line 112, while the second eighth panel 110 is delimited from the second second panel 20 by a second short second fold line 114.

[0066] Thus, such a blank 10 makes it possible to produce a pre-assembled unfoldable packaging as will be explained below.

[0067] First of all, according to a first step, the first projecting extension 42 forming the first tab is glued onto the front face 11, and it is folded 180° along the fold line of the tab 44 against the third panel 32 on the front face 11. Therefore, the wide U-shaped cutout 46 makes it possible to detach a hooking tab 116 which is found in [Fig.2] and which then projects from the first front edge 40. Also, the first free edge 45 of the first projecting extension 42 then defines a first shoulder 118.

[0068] Then, according to a second step, with regard to [Fig.l], the first 94 and second 102 triangular portions of the first 80 and second 82 sixth panels are folded 180° respectively along the first 92 and second 100 second oblique folding lines, front face 11 against front face 11.

[0069] And then the first 94 and second 102 triangular portions thus folded are glued, and also the connecting tab 28 on its front face 11.

[0070] According to a third step, not only the first 80 and second 82 are folded sixth panels, respectively along the first 84 and second 86 short fold lines, but also the third panel 32 and the fifth panel 66 respectively along the first 34 and second 68 long fold lines. The first 80 and second 82 sixth panels, and the third panel 32 and the fifth panel 66 are folded 180°, rear face 13 against rear face 13, i.e. respectively against the two second panels 18, 20 and the two first panels 14, 16.

[0071] In a fourth step, the second first panel 16 is then folded first of all by 180°, rear face 13 against rear face 13, along the third transverse fold line 26, then the second second panel 20 by 180°, rear face 13 against rear face 13, along the second transverse fold line 24.

[0072] Consequently, the lateral edge of the second second panel 20, opposite the second transverse fold line 24, is applied to the glued connecting tab 28. Also, the second triangular portion 102 glued on its rear face, is applied flat against the front face 11 of the third panel 32, while the front face 11 of the fifth panel 66 is applied flat against the first triangular portion 94 glued on its rear face 13.

[0073] Consequently, the second first panel 16 is integral with the second second panel 20 on the one hand, and the second sixth panel 82 is integral with the third panel 32, while the first sixth panel 80 is integral with the fifth panel 66.

[0074] At the end of this fourth step, the pre-assembled unfoldable packaging is in accordance with the invention. Its unfolding will now be described, to form a packaging, with reference to [Fig.2], [Fig.3], [Fig.4] and [Fig.5] while referring to [Fig.1].

[0075] First, the first first panel 14 and the first second panel 18 are folded towards each other 14, along the first transverse fold line 22, while the second first panel 16 and the second second panel 20 are also folded towards each other along the fourth transverse fold line 30.

[0076] The first two panels 14, 16 then form two first walls 124, 126, parallel to each other, while the two second panels 18, 20 form two second walls 128, 130 parallel to each other and perpendicular to the two first walls 124, 126. The two first walls 124, 126 and the two second walls 128, 130 thus define a receiving volume 115.

[0077] During the deployment of the first panels 14, 16, and the second panels 18, 20, the two sixth notched panels 80, 82, or two third flaps, unfold and sequentially drive the fifth panel 66, or second flap, which comes to rest on them, then the third panel 32.

[0078] The first front edge 40 and the hooking tab 116 then come into friction against the inside of one 126 of the two first walls 124, 126, until the hooking tab 116 engages in the oblong cutout 76 forming a slot. The hooking tab 116 then engages precisely inside the median widening 78 between its two lateral stop edges. It is thus trapped laterally, which makes it possible to increase the mechanical resistance of the assembly.

[0079] The third panel 32 defines a bearing face 132 opposite a receiving face 134 as shown in [Fig.2]. It is itself applied, bearing face 132 against the second flap 66, forming a third wall, or bottom wall 136 which will be found in [Fig.5].

[0080] Thus, the second flap 66 is held substantially perpendicular to one 126 of the two first walls 124, 26 with which it is integral, and resting on the two third flaps 80, 82, which themselves extend substantially perpendicularly and respectively to the two second walls 128, 130. The third panel 32 forming the bottom wall 136 is then held firmly by the second flap 66, substantially perpendicular to the other first wall 124.

[0081] The receiving volume 115 can then be filled with goods to be preserved and shipped. Also, the two eighth panels 108, 110 forming the two fourth flaps are folded towards each other against the goods to be preserved, while the seventh panel 104 forming the fifth flap is folded and applied to the two fourth flaps.

[0082] Then, the fourth panel 50, forming a fourth wall, is in turn folded to be applied against the fifth flap and to also form a cover.

[0083] We then find, in [Fig.4] the packaging thus produced.

[0084] The first extension 54 of the fourth wall, forming the first flap, will then be folded down against said one 126 of the two first walls 124, 126, while the second projecting extension 58 forming the second tab will be engaged through the oblong cutout 76.

[0085] In [Fig.4], prior to engagement, we find the second projecting extension 58 whose edge 62 is folded back, on the side of the rear face 13, with reference to [Fig.l]. Thus, the second free edge 65 appears, forming a second shoulder.

[0086] Furthermore, it will be observed that the folded edge 62 is not glued to the second projecting extension 58 and that it remains slightly inclined so as to technically benefit from the resilience of the cardboard.

[0087] Thus, the projecting extension 58 forming the second tab, the edge 62 folded, is engaged through the oblong cutout 76 and between the fifth panel 66, forming the second flap, and the wide U-shaped cutout 46 extended by the first projecting extension 42, not shown in [Fig.4]. The first projecting extension 42 forms the first tab folded down and glued against the third panel 32. The engagement of the projecting extension 58 thus takes place freely without interaction with the contents of the receiving volume. Because in fact, it is preserved from it by the bottom wall 136 on which the goods rest.

[0088] The first projecting extension 42 is hidden in [Fig. 4]. As the projecting extension 58 is pushed through the oblong cutout 76, the folded edge 62 is driven in friction against the projecting extension 42, which is found in [Fig. 5], until the second free edge 65 extends beyond the first free edge 45 forming the first shoulder 118. The folded edge 62 relaxes substantially, taking into account the cardboard residence, so that the free edge 65 fits opposite the first shoulder 118. This situation occurs while the first extension 54 of the fourth wall 50, forming the first flap, is applied against said one 126 of the two first walls 124, 126.

[0089] Consequently, the projecting extension 58 forming the second tab is trapped between the fifth panel 66, forming the second flap, and the first projecting extension 42 forming the first tab. Indeed, any return of the projecting extension 58 by pulling for example on the first extension 54, causes the free edge 65 to press against the first shoulder 118 and therefore the translational blocking of the projecting extension 58 or second tab.

[0090] In this way, the packaging thus formed is perfectly locked, without using the usual adhesives. It can only be unlocked by tearing off the first extension 54 for example. In which case, such a break-in is perfectly visible and cannot be repaired without leaving a trace.
