[0028] Referring to Figures 1 and 2, the disclosure relates to a leaf spring 106 connected to a button 108 on a cosmetic package 100. Articulation of the button 108 compresses the leaf spring 106, and the leaf spring 106 flexes to eject the tray 104. In one embodiment, the leaf spring 106 is not under load / tension when the package 100 is closed or fully open.
[0029] The disclosure provides a simple gesture for ejecting the tray 104. The tray 104 may contain a container holder 110 including one or more different cosmetic formulations 114 in separate containers 116. Alternatively, the tray 104 may contain a single formulation, or any combination of formulations.
[0030] The disclosure provides a plastic leaf spring 106 that is not under tension / load at rest, which cannot cause any fatigue and / or degradation of the plastic leaf spring 106 due to continuous loading as is the case with a conventional spring.
[0031] The disclosure provides a spring 106 that occupies the least amount of space possible in the package 100. For example, the leaf spring 106 is a curved to slightly curved length of thin, narrow film / plastic at rest, taking up little space.
[0032] The disclosure incorporates a locking mechanism or locking hook 130 into the knob 108 for locking and unlocking the tray 104.
[0033] The button 108 is connected to one end of the leaf spring 106. The button 108 can be easily operated from outside the package 100.
[0034] The leaf spring 106 is placed inside the package 100 in a position to push the tray 104 out of the package 100. The leaf spring 106 is hinged by pressing the button 108 which is a part of the spring / incorporated in the spring 106, or may be a separate component flexibly connected to the spring 106. The other end of the spring 106 is either connected to a fixed point, such as the hook 176 in the package 100 (the spring pivots against this fixed position), or it is also possible that there are two buttons which are configured linearly, with the spring connecting the two. Pressing one of these buttons actuates the spring, with the other stationary button becoming the fixed position for pivoting, or pressing both buttons increases the flexion / curvature of the leaf spring for increased ejection of the pallet tray.
[0035] The leaf spring 106 is a thin strip of plastic. This strip generally has a rectangular cross-section, designed to bend along a plane of motion.
[0036] The button 108 includes a locking mechanism 130 that connects the button 108 to a corresponding locking hook 166 on the tray 104. Pressing the button 108 disengages the button 108 from the tray 104 and simultaneously initiates flexion of the leaf spring 106, pushing the tray 104 out of the package 100. The act of pushing the tray 104 back into the package 100 slides the button 108 so that the locking mechanism 130 re-engages with the corresponding latch on the tray, reactivating the lock so that the tray 104 does not fall out of the package 100. When the tray 104 is out of the package 100, a consumer can access the formulations on the container holder 110.
[0037] The disclosure provides a convenient means of opening the cosmetic paddle container 100 and presenting the contents to the consumer, a visual means of confirming locking and unlocking of the container 100, a means of incorporating a plastic spring into a container for: 1) a container 100 made of a (durable) plastic other than removable paddle containers; 2) a spring that is tension-free at rest which avoids mechanical fatigue, particularly on plastic springs.
[0038] To solve one problem, the leaf spring hinge mechanism is made of flexible polypropylene (PP). Flexible PP can typically withstand hundreds to thousands of cycles without failure due to its composition. PP is also a likely candidate for all plastic components of the package 100, and if created in this manner, it would comprise a mono-material package (one plastic) that would greatly facilitate recycling.
[0039] The spring 106 could be made of flexible materials other than PP. TPEs (elastomeric plastics), TPUs (flexible urethane-based materials), silicones, TPVs (thermoplastic vulcanates), and other flexible plastics are possible. A combination of two plastics may also work (e.g., a PP spring and a PET or PE button).
[0040] This disclosure provides a cosmetic packaging 100 that is durable compared to others that require a tensioned metal spring that takes up more space in the overall package. The plastic spring takes up little space in the packaging, is made of the same material as the packaging (e.g., PP), and is not tensioned, so its strength does not degrade over time compared to a conventional spring. The spring may also be integrated into the locking mechanism.
[0041] The spring 106 is used to release a tray 104 or any "drawer" type component in a cosmetic package 100. It could also release an applicator, wand, brush, etc. It could be used as a tamper protection or tamper indication mechanism to show the user that an action has occurred or needs to be reset.
[0042] [Fig.l] shows a cosmetic packaging 100. The button 108 is accessible from outside the packaging 100.
[0043] [Fig. 2] shows the cosmetic package 100 with the lid 146 removed. The package 100 includes a lower container 102. A tray 104, a leaf spring 106, and a button 108 are enclosed within the container 102. [Fig. 2] shows that the button 108 is not actuated, meaning it is fully right, and the leaf spring 106 is not compressed. The button 108 and the tray 104 are locked together.
[0044] [Fig. 3] shows that the package 100 includes a container 102. The container 102 is formed of a base 154, walls 156, 158, 160 extending vertically from the base 154, an opening 162 between the walls 156, 158 allowing the tray 104 to slide in and out, and a leaf spring 106 having a convex side 126 and a concave side 128. A first end 122 of the leaf spring 106 is secured to an inner side of a wall, and a second end 124 of the leaf spring 106 is placed in or against a sliding knob 108, wherein the side convex 126 of the leaf spring 106 is oriented toward the opening 162 to push the plate 104 when the leaf spring is compressed.
[0045] [Fig. 3] shows that the two walls 156, 158 are opposite each other, on the left and right sides, and that the third wall 160, on the rear face, is perpendicular to the walls 156, 158 and opposite the opening 162. The inner sides of the walls 156, 158 may each have a straight rail 120 facing inward and generally extending the entire length of the walls 156, 158. The rail 120 fits into a groove 118 provided on the right and left outer sides of the tray 104.
[0046] [Fig. 3] shows the cosmetic package 100 further comprising a tray 104. The tray 104 may rest on the base 154. The tray 104 is positioned such that one side of the tray 104 is adjacent the convex side 126 of the leaf spring 106, and the opposite side of the tray 104 is adjacent the opening 162. The tray 104 may slide in and out of the package 100 through the opening 162.
[0047] The tray 104 is a container including a base and four walls surrounding the base. However, the tray can take any shape. The dimensions of the tray 104 generally correspond to the size of the container 102, so that the tray can occupy the space inside the container 102. For example, the side-to-side length of the tray 104 extends from the side wall 156 to the opposite side wall 158 of the container 102 so that the tray 104 fills the opening 162. The front-to-rear dimension of the tray 104 includes the portion for holding a container holder 110, and a horizontal flange 164 connected along the top and rear wall 174 of the tray 104. With the flange 164, the front-to-rear direction almost reaches the rear wall 160 of the container. The front to rear dimension of the tray 104 is also similar to the length of the side walls 156, 158.The flange 164 leaves a space at the rear of the container 102 which is occupied by the leaf spring 106 and the button 108.
[0048] The tray 104 may receive a container holder 110. The container holder 110 may include a plurality of containers 116, each container 116 including a formulation 114. The containers 116 are removable so as to allow a consumer to change containers to provide different formulation choices or to replace formulations that have been depleted.
[0049] The flange 164 extends from the rear wall 174 of the tray 104. The flange 164 is horizontal and extends from the upper edge of the rear wall 174 of the tray 104. The flange 164 extends from the right side to the left side of the tray 104. The flange 164 includes a cutout 138 to allow the knob 108 to slide. The cutout 138 also includes an angled edge that guides the knob 108 to allow the tray 104 to be locked to the knob 108. The upper surface of the flange 164 includes a first rail 142 and a second rail 144. The first rail 142 and a second rail 144 are straight in the front-to-rear direction. The rails 142 and 144 may guide the tray 104 to prevent jamming when the tray 104 is pushed outward through the opening 162 or upon insertion.
[0050] The leaf spring 106 includes a first end 122 which may be cylindrical in shape. The cylindrically shaped end 122 engages a correspondingly shaped hook 176 located on the inner side of the rear wall 160.
[0051] The leaf spring 106 includes a curved section having a convex side 126 and a concave side 128. The convex side 126 is oriented toward the opening 162. The curve of the leaf spring 106 may be defined as a portion (circumference) of a circle or a symmetrical portion of an ellipse. The curve of the leaf spring 106 may be defined as an eccentric curve or a groove. The curve of the leaf spring 106 may be defined as an involute portion of a circle or as an Archimedean spiral-type curve portion. A leaf spring 106 including an involute portion of a circle has the characteristic that the bending resistance increases when the leaf spring is depressed, which may be a desirable tactile sensation.
[0052] The leaf spring 106 includes a second end 124. The second end 124 is flat, without any curvature. The second end 124 is connected to the knob 108. For example, the second end 124 may fit inside the knob 108. The convex side 126 of the leaf spring 106 is adjacent the outside of the rear wall of the tray 104. As can be seen, when the leaf spring 106 is flexed by pressing the knob 108, the leaf spring 106 flexes toward the opening 162 against the tray 104 pushing the tray 104 outwardly through the opening 162. The leaf spring 106 flexes in the same horizontal plane in which the tray 104 moves which is also parallel to the base 154 of the container 102.
[0053] The knob 108 is generally rectangular in shape. The knob 108 includes an upper horizontal plate 172 and a lower horizontal plate 132 parallel to each other. The upper and lower plates 172, 132 are connected by a perpendicular rear wall (not shown) attached to the rear edges of the upper and lower plates 172, 132 such that the upper and lower plates 172, 132 are separated by a gap. The upper plate 172 has an upper rail 140 above the front edge of the upper plate 172. The lower plate 132 has a lower rail 152 below the front edge of the lower plate 132.
[0054] When the button 108 is assembled in the package 100, the lower rail 152 is positioned to engage in front of a corresponding rail 134 on the base 154 of the container 102, and the upper rail 140 is positioned to engage in front of a corresponding rail 148 on the underside of the cover 146 shown in [Fig. 4]. Therefore, the button 108 is guided via the rails so as to slide in a linear path between a first fully extended position to the right, as shown in [Fig. 2] and a second fully compressed position as shown in [Fig. 5]. By actuating the button 108 from the first position to the second position, the leaf spring 106 is compressed, thereby flexing the leaf spring 106 and pushing the tray 104 out of the package 100. The second flat end section 124 of the leaf spring 106 is engaged inside the button 108 in the space between the upper and lower plates 172, 132.
[0055] The knob 108 includes a latch 136 on the right side of the knob 108. The latch 136 extends above the top plate 172 of the knob 108 and below the bottom plate 132 of the knob 108. In the front-to-rear direction, the latch 136 does not extend as far forward as the top and bottom plates 172, 132. A small section of the edges on the right side of the top and bottom plates 172, 132 are exposed and abut against the inside of the wall 158 to prevent the knob 108 from moving further to the right. The portions of the latch 136 that extend above the top plate 172 and below the bottom plate 132 abut against the respective cutouts 168, 170 at the rear and right corner of the container 102 and the lid 146, respectively, making the knob 108, in particular the latch 136 accessible via the cutouts 168, 170 from the outside. The cutouts 168, 170 also serve to limit the movement of the knob 108 to the left when the latch 136 abuts against the leftmost edge of the cutouts 168, 170.
[0056] The knob 108 includes a locking mechanism 130. The locking mechanism 130 includes a portion that extends horizontally from the front face over the edge of the top plate 172 and forms a hook 130. The flange 164 on the tray 104 includes a corresponding hook 166 that engages the hook 130 on the knob 108.
[0057] As shown in [Fig.2], in the first position, the button 108 is fully extended to the right, the leaf spring 106 is fully relaxed, and the hook 130 on the button 108 is engaged in the hook 166 on the tray 104, thereby preventing the tray 104 from falling out of the package 100.
[0058] When the button 108 is manually actuated to the left, the hook 130 on the button 108 disengages from the hook 166 on the tray 104 and begins to compress the leaf spring 106, thereby allowing the tray 104 to be pushed out of the container 102 by flexing the leaf spring 106 as shown in [Fig.5].
[0059] When the tray 104 is pushed outward, the tray 104 is linearly guided by the two rails 142, 144 on the upper surface of the flange 164. The two rails 142, 144 engage against two rails 148, 150 on the underside of the cover 146 (see [Fig.4]). This keeps the tray 104 aligned and prevents it from jamming.
[0060] When the tray 104 is unlocked and pushed out of the package 100, the button 108 can be released. This allows the button 108 to return to the right, allowing the leaf spring 106 to fully expand by releasing all compression on the leaf spring 106 when the tray 104 is out of the package 100, as shown in [Fig. 6].
[0061] When the tray 104 is pushed back into the package 100, an angle about the button 108 and the curve of the cutout 138 on the flange 164 allows the latch 130 on the button 108 to re-engage with the latch 166 on the flange 164 when the tray 104 is pushed back, producing a click as the button 108 re-engages the tray 104.
[0062] [Fig. 2] shows a cosmetic package 100 comprising a container 102 including a base 154 surrounded by three or more walls 156, 158, 160 extending vertically from the base and an opening 162 between two opposing walls 156, 158; a leaf spring 106 having a convex side 126 and a concave side 128, wherein a first end 122 of the leaf spring 106 is attached to an inner side of a wall 160 between the two opposing walls 156, 158, and a second end 124 of the leaf spring 106 is connected to a sliding button 108, wherein the convex side 126 of the leaf spring 106 is oriented toward the opening 162; and a tray 104 within the container 102, wherein a first wall of the tray is adjacent the convex side 126 of the leaf spring.
[0063] The sliding button 108 is constrained to slide between a first position (see [Fig.2]) and a second position (see [Fig.5]), the leaf spring 106 is relaxed without spring compression with the button 108 in the first position, and the leaf spring 106 is compressed with the button in the second position.
[0064] The sliding knob 108 includes a first latch 130 and the tray 104 includes a second latch 166, the first latch and the second latch are engaged with the knob 108 in the first position.
[0065] The plate 104 extends outside the opening 162 and the spring 106 is relaxed without compression with the button 108 in the first position (see [Fig.6]).
[0066] The sliding button 108 includes a latch 136 which limits the movement of the sliding button.
[0067] The sliding knob 108 includes a lower rail 152 engaged with a rail 134 on the base 154 of the container 102 to guide the knob when sliding from the first position to the second position and back to the first position.
[0068] The cosmetic packaging further comprises a lid 146 enclosing the container 102, wherein the sliding button 108 includes an upper rail 140 in engaged with a rail 148 on the underside of the cover to guide the knob when sliding from the first position to the second position and back to the first position.
