Description

FIELD The present invention relates to a lock keep. BACKGROUND It is known to provide a door or window with one or more locks which can be operated to a locked condition in which the one or more locks are received in a frame of the door or window to prevent movement of the door or window. The frame typically has attached thereto one or more lock keeps for receiving the locks therein. The lock keep typically includes a plate and parts attached to the plate to form lock receiving apertures designed to receive and hold the locks securely in place. The lock keep may also incorporate one or more flanges with arcuate portions adjacent the lock receiving apertures for guiding the locks into the lock receiving apertures as the locks are operated, e.g. if the locks are not exactly aligned with the lock receiving apertures, the arcuate portions provide surfaces over which the locks slide into alignment to enter the lock receiving apertures. The locks may be configured as a latch, e.g. a latch of a handle assembly, that is received in a lock receiving aperture of the lock keep. In examples, a door or window may have a multipoint lock system which incorporates locks at opposite ends of the door or window, e.g. hooks, and a lock, e.g. latch, centrally along the door or window, and separate lock keeps for each set of lock(s) at the ends of the door I window, or a single plate, with corresponding lock receiving apertures located along the plate for each set of lock(s) at the ends of the door I window. The location of the locks along the edge face of the door or window which faces the frame is typically towards one side of the edge face, e.g. towards a left or right side thereof. This necessitates the lock keep being configured with appropriately located lock receiving apertures towards a corresponding side of the plate which forms the lock keep. These are known as one-handed lock keeps. Furthermore, the lock keep is often adjustable so that the parts of the lock keep which co-operate with the plate to form the lock receiving apertures can be moved to adjust the location of the lock receiving apertures a small amount relative to the plate to accommodate the position of the locks on the edge face of the door or window. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE Referring to the figures, examples of the disclosure or technology, for use with a door will be described. It will be appreciated that the examples described below can be used with other types of door and / or a window in a manner that will be familiar to the skilled person, including any necessary modifications for their use therewith. Referring to figure 1, this shows a door 10 pivotally supported within an opening provided by a frame 12. The door 10 is pivotally connected to a first side of the frame 12 so that it can open and close the opening provided by the frame 12. The door 10 includes a multipoint lock system 18 according to an example of the disclosure. The system 18 includes a first lock device 20, a second lock device 20’ and an assembly 16 operably coupled to, and for operating the first and second lock devices 20, 20’. The system 18 is provided on the side of the door 10 which moves into and out of abutment with frame 12 when the door is closed or opened. The assembly 16 is connected to the lock devices 20, 20’ by respective first and second output members 22, 22’. First and second output members 22, 22’ are elongate members. The output members 22, 22’ may be provided in the form of metal rods. Lock devices 20, 20’ are positioned at respective first and second opposite ends (upper and lower ends) of the door 10 to form the first and second lock points of the system 18 at these positions. In this example, lock devices 20, 20’ each include a pair of spaced apart locks (not shown) in the form of hooks that rotate in opposite directions when moved to their locked state (in which they are in an extended state) or unlocked state (in which they are in a retracted state). The assembly 16 includes a handle 17 for a user to grasp and operate the assembly 16 to unlock the lock devices 20, 20’. The assembly 16 includes a key cylinder lock (not shown) which may operate the assembly 16 to unlock the lock devices 20, 20’ independently of the handle 17. The system 18 includes a body (not shown) to which the lock devices 20, 20’ and assembly 16 are attached. The body may be in the form of an elongate strip or plate defining an inner surface against which the lock devices 20, 20’ and assembly 16 abut, and an outer surface which faces the inside of the frame 12 when the door 10 is closed. In more detail, the frame 12 includes two lock keeps 30, 30’ for receiving the locks of the lock devices 20, 20’ connected to the inside surface of the frame 12 and at opposite ends of the frame 12, i.e. the surface which faces outwardly towards the door 10 when the door 10 is closed in the frame 12. The lock keeps 30, 30’ (shown schematically in figure 1) are identical to each other and the features in common are denoted by the same numeral with an additional prime symbol (‘) for the lock keep 30’. Referring to figure 2, this shows lock keep 30 in its assembled state prior to it being fixed to the frame 12. The lock keep 30 includes a plate 32 which defines first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b. The plate 32 is a pressed piece of metal in this example but it may be formed differently in other examples, e.g. by casting or moulding, without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. The plate 32 has a forwardly facing surface 36 and a rearwardly facing surface 38. The plate 32 is generally rectangular in plan view. The plate 32 has relatively shorter top and bottom sides 33a, 33b, and relatively long left and right sides 33c, 33d. Relatively short walls extend downwardly around the perimeter of the plate 32. The plate 32 has first and second opposite ends 40a, 40b. The first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b are spaced apart along the length of the plate 32. The first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b are identical in this example. The apertures 34a, 34b are generally rectangular shaped but may be other shapes in examples, e.g. obround. The apertures 34a, 34b are positioned on an axis A which runs lengthwise of the plate 32 and along the centre line of the plate 32. The apertures 34a, 34b are aligned to each other. The apertures 34a, 34b are centred with respect to the left and right sides 33c, 33d of the plate 32. The axis A bisects the apertures 34a, 34b. With reference to figure 3, the plate 32 includes an aperture 42a located above the first plate aperture 34a towards the first end 40a of the plate 32, and an aperture 42b located below the second plate aperture 34b towards the second end 40b of the plate 32. The ends 40a, 40b of the plate 42 each include a pair of apertures 44 for fasteners (not shown) to extend therethrough and attach the plate 32 to the frame 12. The lock keep 30 includes a first part 50 and a second part 60 connected to the plate 32 to define first and second lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b in communication with the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b respectively. As best seen in figure 4, the first part 50 includes a planar section 52 positioned adjacent the rearwardly facing surface 38. The first part 50 includes first and second flange sections 54a, 54b connected to the planar section 52 which extend through the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b respectively to extend over portions of the forwardly facing surface 36 adjacent the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b. The first and second flange sections 54a, 54b are positioned along the same (left) side of the first part 50 and lie on the same axis. The first part 50 is generally obround shaped but may have other shapes in examples, e.g. a rectangular shape. The first part 50 is integrally formed as a single component part. In this case, the first part 50 is a cast metal component. The planar section 52 defines first and second apertures 56a, 56b. The first and second apertures 56a, 56b are spaced apart along the lengthwise central axis B of the planar section 52. The first and second apertures 56a, 56b are identical in this example. The apertures 56a, 56b are aligned to each other. The apertures 56a, 56b are centred with respect to the widthwise dimension of the planar section 52. The planar section 52 has opposing ends 53a, 53b. The planar section 52 defines further apertures 58a, 58b which are in communication with apertures 42a, 42b respectively when the first part 50 is connected to the plate 32. When the planar section 52 is viewed in plan view, aperture 58a is positioned above the aperture 56a and aperture 58b is positioned below the aperture 56b. When the first part 50 is connected to the plate 32, the first and second apertures 56a, 56b communicate with the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b respectively. The first flange section 54a is connected to the planar section 52 and extends upwardly and laterally away from a left side or portion of the first aperture 56a. The first flange section 54a includes a flange portion 57a which is spaced apart from the planar section 52 so as to lie above the planar section 52. The flange portion 57a is generally planar and extends transversely or perpendicularly away from axis B. The first flange section 54a is generally L-shaped in cross-section. The first flange section 54a includes an upstanding portion 59a which connects the flange portion 57a to the planar section 52. The first flange section 54a includes an arcuate corner 55a which connects the upstanding portion 59a to the flange portion 57a. The second flange section 54b is identical in configuration to the first flange section 54a in this example and features it shares in common are denoted by the same reference numeral with the suffix ‘a’ replaced by ‘b’ for the second flange section 54b. The second flange section 54b extends in the same way as first flange section 54a from a corresponding side or portion, i.e. left side, of the second aperture 56b to the first flange section 54a extends from the first aperture 56a. The second part 60 includes a planar section 62 positioned behind and adjacent the first part 50. The second part 60 includes first and second flange sections 64a, 64b connected to the planar section 62 which extend through the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b respectively to extend over portions of the forwardly facing surface 36 adjacent the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b. The first and second flange sections 64a, 64b are positioned, and spaced apart, along the same (right) side of the second part 60 and lie on the same axis. The planar section 62 is generally obround shaped but could be shaped differently in examples, e.g. a rectangular shape. The second part 60 is integrally formed as a single component part. In this case, the second part 60 is a cast metal component. The planar section 62 defines an opening 66 that extends across the length of the planar section 62. The opening 66 is an elongated shape which communicates with the apertures 56a, 56b and the plate apertures 34a, 34b when the second part 60 is connected to the plate 32. The opening 66 is centred with respect to the widthwise dimension of the planar section 62. The planar section has opposing first and second ends 63a, 63b. The planar section 62 defines further apertures 68a, 68b which are in communication with apertures 42a, 42b, as well apertures 58a, 58b, respectively when the second part 60 is connected to the plate 32. When viewing the planar section 62 in plan view, aperture 68a is positioned at the first end 63a above the opening 66, and aperture 68b is positioned at the second end 63b below the opening 66. The second part 60 includes an internal cavity 61a in communication with opening 66. The internal cavity is defined by a hollow section which is closed at its bottom. The hollow section is connected to the planar section 62 and extends in a perpendicular direction away from the planar section 62. The hollow section is configured as a pocket. The internal cavity is rectangular cuboid shaped. The first flange section 64a is connected to the planar section 62 and extends upwardly and laterally away from the right side or portion of the opening 66. The first flange section 64a is positioned closer and towards the first end 63a compared to the second flange section 64b which is positioned closer and towards the second end 63b. The first flange section 64a includes a flange portion 67a which is spaced apart from the planar section 62 so as to lie above the planar section 62. The flange portion 67a is generally planar and extends transversely or perpendicularly away from an axis B’ which extends lengthwise and centrally of the planar section 62. The first flange section 64a is generally L-shaped in cross-section. The first flange section 64a includes an upstanding portion 69a which connects the flange portion 67a to the planar section 62. The first flange section 64a includes an arcuate corner 65a which connects the upstanding portion 69a to the flange portion 67a. The second flange section 64b is identical in configuration to the first flange section 64a in this example and features it shares in common are denoted by the same reference numeral with the suffix ‘a’ replaced by ‘b’ for the second flange section 64b. The second flange section 64b extends from a corresponding side or portion, i.e. right side, of the opening 66 to which the first flange section 64a extends from the opening 66. The planar section 62 includes a lip 69 positioned between the flange sections 67a, 67b. The lip 69 extends transversely or laterally away from the opening 66. In this example, the flange sections 54a, 54b and flange sections 64a, 64b are identical in shape with the only difference being that the flange sections 64a, 64b each have flange portions 67a, 67b that are spaced a further distance or height above the planar section 62 compared to the flange portions 57a, 57b relative to the planar section 52. Referring to figures 2 and 3, the first and second parts 50 and 60 are coupled for movement relative to the plate 32 to permit the first and second lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b to be moved relative to the first and second plate apertures 34a, 34b respectively. Referring to figures 5 and 6, in this example, the lock keep 30 includes first and second devices 70a, 70b for coupling the first and second parts 50 and 60 for movement relative to the plate 32. The first and second devices 70a, 70b are identical and so only one will be described here with common features sharing the same reference numeral other than the suffix ‘a’ replaced by ‘b’ for the second device 70b. First device 70a has a disc shaped part 72a that rests on the forwardly facing surface 36 of the plate 32 and a cam 74a connected to the part 72a. The part 72a has a forwardly facing surface which includes a formation for co-operating with a tool, e.g. an Allen key, to permit rotation of the device 70a when the tool is operated. As will be described, the cam 74a engages with the first and second parts 50, 60 causing them to move when the device 70a is operated. In this example, the cam 74a is configured to cause the first and second parts 50, 60 to move linearly when the device 70a is rotated. In this example, the cam 74a is configured as an eccentric cam. The cam 74a extends away from the part 72a and extends through the apertures 42a, 58a, and 68a. The cam 74a includes a cam section 73a and a cam section 75a. Cam section 73a is a circular shaped formation formed on the part 72a and is offset from the centre of the part 72a. Cam section 73a projects a relatively low distance away from the disc shaped part 72a and only extends through the aperture 42a. The cam section 73a is of a shape and dimension to abut the internal edges of the plate 32 which define aperture 42a. Cam section 75a is generally cylindrical shaped and extends from one side of the cam section 73a to be offset with respect to the centre thereof. Cam section 75a is generally centrally positioned with respect to the part 72a. Cam section 75a is configured as a fastener, in this example, a rivet, that extends through the apertures 58a, 68a to couple them to each other and the plate 32 as will be described. The diameter of the cam section 75a is smaller than the diameter of the cam section 73a. Assembly and operation of the lock keep 30 will now be described with the understanding that lock keep 30’ will be assembled and operate in the same way. Referring to figure 5, in a first step, the first part 50 is placed into position relative to the plate 32. The first part 50 is placed behind the plate 32 and aligned thereto before passing and rotating the flange sections 54a, 54b through the plate apertures 34a, 34b to have the flange portions 57a, 57b positioned over respective adjacent (left) portions of the forwardly facing surface 36. It can be seen that the adjacent internal edges of the plate 32 which define the plate apertures 34a, 34b are not visible in plan view when the first part 50 has been aligned to the plate 32. It can be seen that the apertures 58a, 58b are in communication with the apertures 42a, 42b respectively. In a second step, the second part 60 is placed behind the first part 50. The second part 60 is aligned relative to the plate apertures 34a, 34b and the apertures 56a, 56b of the first part 50 before passing and rotating the flange sections 64a, 64b through these pairs of apertures so that the flange portions 67a, 67b are positioned over respective adjacent (right) portions of the forwardly facing surface 36. Similar to the first part 50, the adjacent internal edges of the plate 32 which define the plate apertures 34a, 34b are not visible, nor are the adjacent internal edges of the planar section 52 which define the apertures 56a, 56b. The planar section 62 lies against the planar section 52 so that they are flat against each other. Due to the flange portions 67a, 67b being higher relative to the planar section 62 to account for the thicknesses of the planar section 52 and plate 32, the flange portions 67a, 67b lie in the same plane as the flange portions 57a, 57b. The apertures 68a, 68b are in communication with the apertures 42a, 42b and 58a, 58b respectively when the second part 60 has been aligned. The devices 70a, 70b are then connected by passing their respective cams 74a through the apertures 42a, 42b in plate 32 and apertures 58a, 58b, 68a, 68b of the first / second parts respectively. The cam sections 75a, 75b protrude through the apertures 68a, 68b to be proud of the rearwardly facing surface of the second part 60. A tool is then used to press the cam sections 75a, 75b so that their ends deform outwardly and against the rearwardly facing surface of the planar section 62 of the second part 60. In doing so, the devices 70a, 70b couple the first and second parts 50, 60 to each other and the plate 32. It will be understood that the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b are defined by the opposing surfaces of the flange sections 54a, 64a and 54b, 64b respectively. The combined widths of the portions which extend through the plate apertures 34a, 34b of the first and second parts 50, 60 when connected together are smaller than the respective widths of the plate apertures 34a, 34b so that the flange sections thereof can move laterally within the plate apertures 34a, 34b. The lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b are smaller than the plate apertures 34a, 34b. The flange sections 54a, 54b, 64a, 64b are also shorter in length compared to the plate apertures 34a, 34b so that they may be moved a small amount in a vertical direction with respect to the plate 32. The assembled lock device 30 may then be attached to the frame 12 by passing fasteners through the apertures 44 and into the frame 12 for attachment therewith. The assembled lock device 30’ may be similarly attached to the frame 12. Referring to figures 7a-c, it is necessary to align the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b to the respective locks of the lock device 20. This is achieved by using a tool to rotate the devices 70a, 70b in the appropriate direction. For example, when a left-handed keep is needed, and starting from a position in which the lock keep 30 is none-handed shown in figure 7b with the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b being located centrally with respective to the plate 32, the lock keep 30 can be configured to such a state by rotating device 70a clockwise so that the cam section 75a follows an arcuate path causing it to move in a leftward and upward direction. As the ends 53a, 63a are coupled by the device 70a through the cam section 75a, this causes these ends 53a, 63a to move in a corresponding way. This results in the first and second parts 50, 60 being tilted towards the left and the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b being displaced relative to plate 32 accordingly. The device 70b is then rotated clockwise the same amount, causing the opposite ends 53b, 63b to move I tilt until the parts 50, 60 are brought to a vertical I non-tilted state shown in figure 7a. Accordingly, the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b are also displaced relative to plate 32 the required amount to be aligned with the locks of the lock device 20. Figure 7a shows the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b positioned towards the left side of the plate 32 in this state and effectively forming a left-handed keep. Due to the flange portions 57a, 57b and 67a, 67b each overlying and extending past the portions of the surface 36 adjacent the plate apertures 34a, 34b an amount which is greater than the first I second parts 50, 60 can be moved, the internal edges of the plate 32 which define the plate apertures 34a, 34b are not exposed at any stage. The arcuate corners 55a, 55b and 65a, 65b also help centre the locks of the lock device 20 as they are operated and provide surfaces over which they can slide into place should they be slightly out of alignment. The lock keep 30’ can be adjusted in a similar way to reach alignment with the locks of the lock device 20’. The lock devices 20, 20’ can now be operated with the lock keeps 30, 30’. It will be appreciated that the lock keeps 30, 30’ are advantageous in that they can be used for any type of lock orientation whether that be left-handed or right-handed. For example, figure 7 c shows the lock keep 30 configured as a right-handed keep. It will be appreciated that the first part 50 may be configured differently to have a single elongate aperture (similar to aperture 66 of the second part 60) that replaces the two apertures 56a, 56b and communicates with the plate apertures 34a, 34b. The flange sections 54a, 54b would extend from the same side or portion of the single elongate aperture in the same locations relative to the planar section 52 as that shown in figure 4 in such an example. In examples, the apertures 56a, 56b may be recesses instead that are open on their respective right sides without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. Similarly, the relative sides on which the flange sections 57a, 57b, 67a, 67b are provided could be arranged differently between the first and second parts 50, 60 -all that is required is that, when the first and second parts 50, 60 are connected to the plate 32, they form pairs which define the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b. In examples, although a particular design of devices 70a, 70b has been described for effecting movement of the first / second parts and the lock receiving apertures 46a, 46b, it will be appreciated that other designs or configurations may be adopted to permit their movement as will be appreciated by the skilled reader. For example, other types of devices which do not include a rivet type fastener and are coupled by other means, e.g. a thread, to the first and second parts. In examples, other types of cam configurations may be used for the devices 70a, 70b as will be appreciated by the skilled reader. Figures 2 to 7 show an example of the present disclosure for which there are two lock receiving apertures in each lock keep. However, it will be appreciated that the lock keep may have a single lock receiving aperture for use with lock devices that have a single lock each without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the first and second parts of the lock keep would each only have a single aperture that communicates with a single aperture in the plate of the lock keep, and a pair of flange sections. In examples, the lock keep may be configured to receive a latch of a handle assembly such as handle assembly 17 without departing from the scope of the present disclosure. With reference to figures 8 to 10, these show a lock keep 300 in accordance with an example of the present disclosure and partial views thereof for use with a multipoint lock system 18 such as that shown in figure 1 having lock devices 20, 20’ and assembly 16 having a lock in the form of a latch. Lock keep 300 has a plate 332 having first and second opposite end portions 301a, 301 b. The first end portion 301 a and second end portion 301 b of the lock keep 300 are configured almost identically and include the same parts attached thereto, and features, as the lock keep 30, and lock keep 30’ respectively. Features in common with lock keep 30 are denoted by the same reference numeral with the addition of 300 and a double prime suffix (”). Similarly features in common with lock keep 30’ are denoted by the same reference numeral with the addition of 300 and a triple prime suffix The configuration and operation of the end portions of the lock keep 300 to receive the respective locks of devices 20, 20’ will be readily appreciated based on the description provided of the lock keeps 30, 30’ above and so will not be described further here. Plate 332 has a further plate aperture 400 located generally centrally of the plate 332. The lock keep 300 includes a first part 450 and a second part 460 connected to the portion of the plate 332 which includes the aperture 400 therein to define a lock receiving aperture 406 for receiving the lock of assembly 16. The first part 450 has a planar section 452 positioned adjacent the rearwardly facing surface of plate 332 and a flange section 454a which extends through the plate aperture 400. The first part 450, planar section 452 and flange section 454a are similar to the first part 50 of lock plate 30 with the only difference that the planar section 452 has a single aperture and single flange section. The second part 460 is similar to the first part 450 other than the second part 460 having a flange section 456a which is provided on the opposite side of part 460 compared to the flange section 454a relative to the first part 450. The flange section 456a also extends further vertically compared to the flange section 454a relative to the planar section 452 of the first part 450. The plate 332 further includes apertures 442a and 442b positioned above and below (as viewed in plan view) the plate aperture 400 respectively. These receive devices 470a, 470b which are identical to the devices 70a, 70b of the lock keep 30. Devices 470a, 470b couple the first and second parts 450, 460 together for movement relative to the plate 332 in a similar way to permit movement of the lock receiving aperture 406 relative to the plate aperture 400 when the devices 470a, 470b are operated. The skilled person would appreciate how the first and second parts 450, 460 are configured and operate to permit their configuration to create a left or right handed keep according to where the lock of assembly 16 is located so that the lock receiving aperture 406 may receive the said lock therein during use.
