Abstract
A hair styling appliance comprising an optical sensor configured to make two or more measurements of light received from a section of hair being styled by the hair styling appliance, and a processor configured to determine a speed of movement of the section of hair relative to the hair styling appliance based on the two or more measurements. The measurements produce successive images of the section of hair (figs. 12a-12b). The times at which the images were generated are obtained and used with determined displacements of the section of hair in the images to determine a relative speed of movement of the hair. The optical sensor may be e.g. a camera or an array of photosensors. The appliance may be a hair straightener, curler or brush.
