Aquatic animal management apparatus and method

Abstract

An aquaculture system and method of use, comprising a containment 1 having a side wall 2 and a floor 3, an inlet 4 and outlet for water, and a drain 5 for removing solid waste. Within the containment, there is a fixed vertical screen 7 and at least one movable screen 8a, 8b, with apertures to permit water flow and to prevent passage of aquatic species above a defined size. The containment may be circular. The movable screen may have a length “2r”, being twice the radius of the containment and mounted at its centre. The screens may comprise an array of vertical bars and horizontal bars, which have a tear drop cross-section. There may be a means to rotate the body of water in the containment. There may be a plurality of cells in fluidic communication. The system may be used in the grading and harvesting of aquatic species on a continuous basis with the provision of two or more variable sized enclosures in which the organisms are corralled based on their size.
