Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a multi-piece blank of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard, and a container obtained from folding such a blank. As it is known, corrugated cardboard is composed of a fluted paper core sandwiched between and bonded to inner and outer paper face liners . According to the prior art, any kind of box is produced from one or more specific blanks of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard in dependence on the intended use and distribution channel. Hence, the present trends towards multiple formats, smaller volumes and customization dramatically increase the burden on production lines for adapting to such different requirements . One object of the present invention is thus reducing the burden imposed by such articulated and various requirements on the production lines. According to the present invention, this object is achieved by means of a multi-piece blank comprising: - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having at least two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said at least two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of at quadrangular bottom panel least a first lateral panel, a and a second lateral panel, wherein said second crease line defines a first corner flap, a third lateral panel and a second corner flap connected to the first lateral panel, bottom panel and second lateral panel, respectively, wherein said third crease line defines a third corner flap, a fourth lateral panel and a fourth corner flap connected to the first lateral panel, bottom panel and second lateral panel, respectively, - at least one compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having a fourth crease line contiguous and parallel to one of said first, second and third crease lines and defining a first portion and a second portion in said at least one compression member, at least one of said first portion and second portion being glued to at least one of respective areas of an internal surface of the chassis, wherein at least one of said first portion and second portion protrudes beyond a top edge of at least one of said lateral panels and corner flaps opposite to said bottom panel, and comprises a protruding area configured to bear graphic or text elements. A further subject-matter of the present invention is constituted by a container obtained from a multi-piece blank comprising: - a chassis of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having at least two first parallel crease lines, and a second and a third crease line intersecting said at least two first parallel crease lines, wherein said first, second and third crease lines define a series of at least a first lateral panel, a quadrangular bottom panel and a second lateral panel, wherein said second crease line defines a first corner flap, a third lateral panel and a second corner flap connected to the first lateral panel, bottom panel and second lateral panel, respectively, wherein said third crease line defines a third corner flap, a fourth lateral panel and a fourth corner flap connected to the first lateral panel, bottom panel and second lateral panel, respectively, - at least one compression member of corrugated cardboard or cartonboard having a fourth crease line contiguous and parallel to one of said first, second and third crease lines and defining a first portion and a second portion in said at least one compression member, at least one of said first portion and second portion being glued to at least one of respective areas of an internal surface of the chassis, wherein at least one of said first portion and second portion protrudes beyond a top edge of at least one of said lateral panels and corner flaps opposite to said bottom panel, and comprises a protruding area configured to bear graphic or text elements, wherein the first and second lateral panel are folded at 90° about the respective first crease lines, so that opposite first and second lateral container walls are formed, wherein the corner flaps of the first and second lateral panels are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, wherein the third and fourth lateral panels are folded at 90° about the respective lengths of the second and third crease lines, so that the third and fourth lateral panels are arranged parallel and externally to the flaps of the first and second lateral panels, forming a pair of opposite third and fourth lateral container walls, wherein said at least one of said first portion and second portion protrudes vertically beyond said top edge of at least one of said lateral panels and corner flaps opposite to said bottom panel, and wherein said protruding area is facing outwards . According to the invention, by changing size and marginal features of the blank, it is possible to produce different trays satisfying quite different requirements. According to the present invention, the performance of the cardboard or cartonboard used is optimized by using strengthening members where they are most needed and thus lightening the general structure of the container, which is thus fundamentally different from the conventional one due to the significant increase in performance. The strength-conferring material is allocated only where it is needed, so that the quantity of fiber is dramatically lower in comparison with conventional chassis. Such a reduction is rendered possible by the use of the compression members which confer the required strength. According to the prior art, the final container is produced from a blank or chassis, in the entirety of which the quantity of fiber and the board grade are adapted to the performances required for the intended application. On the contrary, according to the present invention, the manufacturing of chassis of different board grades is avoided and the chassis can be produced with the lightest weight, whereas the satisfaction of different requirements is allowed by selection of the proper size and material grade of the compression members. The gist of the present invention thus resides in the presence of the compression members, whose size can vary and provide the flexibility necessary for adapting to the different requirements with the lowest possible weight obtainable today on a corrugator. Furthermore, the compression member and, particularly, its protruding area can be profiled and printed bespoke to requirements of customers and messages they wish to communicate to shoppers. Moreover, it prevents the need to print bespoke artwork for new promotions / cross promotions / price point changes, and allows efficacy of different promotional messaging to be tested on same stock keeping unit. The corner areas between the lateral container walls are reinforced by the compression members 30, 60. The bottom edges of the compression members 30, 60 rest on the bottom panel 18. Furthermore, the second portion 32 of the first compression member 30 protrudes vertically beyond the top edge of the bottom portion 20a of the second lateral panel 20. A tearing action can be exerted on the top part of the box C by gripping on the aperture 20d formed in the second lateral panel 20. Consequently, a removable portion L of the box C, formed by the top portion 36a of the second lateral panel 20 and the top panel 71 gets detached from the bottom portion 20a of the second lateral panel 20 and from the top flaps 72, 73, 74 as a result of the laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 20c, while the bottom portion 20a of the second lateral panel 20 and the top flaps 72, 73, 74 remain attached to the box C. Therefore, the box C splits into two parts, a tray T and a removable portion L, as a result of the complete laceration of the perforated or notched detachment line 20c (figure 16). Therefore, the outward facing, protruding area 32a of the second portion 32 of the first compression member 30 is exposed to sight, exposing the graphic or text elements borne by it. Figures 17-19 illustrate an eigth embodiment of blank and container, respectively, wherein features equal or equivalent to the ones disclosed with reference to the embodiment of the previous figures have the same reference number. The chassis 10 is substantially identical to the embodiment of figures 1-3, and a first compression member 30 and second compression members 60 are provided similarly to the embodiment of figures 14-16. In the above description, features that have been disclosed in connection with one of the embodiments can be combined with features of the other embodiments.
