Claims

1. A jig for use in forming a recess in a door frame for accommodating a door strike, the jig comprising:a first templating device comprising a body element arranged to attach to a door frame, in use, the body element comprising an opening extending through the body element, the first templating device defining a face plate aperture aligned with the opening to provide a template for forming a recess in said door frame for a face plate of a door strike, wherein at least one dimension of the face plate aperture is adjustable; anda second templating device defining a mortice aperture providing a template for forming a mortice recess in said door frame, wherein at least one dimension of the mortice aperture is adjustable independently of the face plate aperture,wherein the second templating device comprises a body element that is removably attachable to the body element of the first templating device in a fixed position so as to locate the mortice aperture in a predetermined position overlying the opening of the body element of the first templating device.

2. A jig as claimed in claim 1, wherein, when the body element of the second templating device is attached to the body element of the first templating device, the mortice aperture of the second templating device overlies the face plate aperture of the first templating device.

A jig as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the first templating device comprises a sub-body defining the face plate aperture, the sub-body being removably attachable to the body element of the first templating device such that, when attached, the face plate aperture overlies the opening of the body element.

A jig as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first templating device comprises one or more recesses or holes formed in an outer surface of the first templating device, and the second templating device comprises one or more corresponding protrusions arranged to be received with the one or more recesses or holes so as to locate the second templating device on the first templating device in the fixed position.

A jig as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein at least one of the first templating device and the second templating device comprises:a first pair of template elements defining a first pair of opposing edges of the face plate aperture or the mortice aperture, at least one of the first pair of template elements being movable relative to the body element in a first direction to define a dimension of the face plate aperture or mortice aperture in the first direction, andand a second pair of template elements defining a second pair of opposing edges of the face plate aperture or the mortice aperture, at least one of the second pair of template elements being movable relative to the body element in a second direction to define a dimension of the face plate aperture or the mortice aperture in the second direction.

A jig as claimed in claim 5, wherein each template element is a substantially plate-like member and wherein the body element of the first templating device and the body element of the second templating device each comprise one or more recesses arranged to accommodate one or more of the template elements.

A jig as claimed in claim 5 or 6, wherein at least one of the template elements of the first templating device comprises an edge arranged to overlap with the opening of the body element to define a respective edge of the face plate aperture and / or wherein the body element of the second templating device comprises an opening, and wherein at least one of the template elements of the second templating device comprises an edge arranged to overlap with the opening to define a respective edge of the mortice aperture.

A jig as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 7, wherein the first templating device comprises: a first pair of template elements, each of the first pair of template elements being movable relative to the body element in a first direction to define a dimension of the face plate aperture in the first direction; anda second pair of template elements, each of the second pair of template elements being movable relative to the body element in the first direction to define a dimension of the face plate aperture in the first direction and being movable relative to the body element in a second direction, perpendicular to the first direction, to define a dimension of the face plate aperture in the second direction.

A jig as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the first templating device comprises a locating member arranged to engage with a moveable template element of the first templating device so as to move with said template element, and to locate a door strike relative to the face plate aperture when the locating member is engaged with said movable template element, the locating member comprising at least one locating edge that is aligned with the face plate aperture and is spaced from an edge of the face plate aperture by a predetermined distance so as to, in use, define a spacing between an edge of the face plate aperture and an edge of said door strike.

A jig as claimed in claim 9, wherein the first templating device comprises a plurality of template elements, each being movable relative to the body element to define a dimension of the face plate aperture, the first templating device further comprising a plurality of locating members, each locating member being arranged to engage with a respective one of the template elements soas to be moveable therewith, and to locate a door strike relative to the aperture, each locating member comprising at least one locating edge that is aligned with the face plate aperture and is spaced from a respective edge of the face plate aperture by a predetermined distance so as to, in use, define a spacing between an edge of the face plate aperture and an edge of said door strike.

A jig as claimed in claim 9 or 10, wherein the or each locating member comprises a seat portion arranged to support a substantially planar surface of a door strike, in use, and a wall portion extending substantially perpendicularly to the seat portion to define a locating edge of the locating member.

A jig as claimed in claim 11, comprising at least one locating member having a seat portion arranged to support a substantially planar surface of a door strike, in use, and two wall portions extending perpendicularly to the seat portion, the two wall portions defining an internal or external corner therebetween, each wall portion defining, in use, a locating edge of the locating member.

13. A jig as claimed in claim 11 or 12, each locating member comprising a seat portion, wherein the seat portion of each locating member lies in a common plane that is parallel to a substantially planar outer surface of the first templating device.

A jig as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 13, wherein the second templating device comprises:a first pair of template elements, each of the first pair of template elements being movable relative to the body element in the first direction to define the dimension of the mortice aperture in the first direction; anda second pair of the template elements, each of the second pair of template elements being movable relative to the body element in the second direction to define the dimension of the mortice aperture in the second direction.

A jig as claimed in any one of claims 5 to 14, comprising a locating member that is removably attachable to the second templating device, the locating member defining at least one locating edge that is aligned with the mortice aperture and is spaced from an edge of the mortice aperture by a predetermined distance.

A jig as claimed in claim 15, comprising a plurality of locating members removably attachable to the second templating device, wherein said plurality of locating members defines, in use, a first pair of locating edges parallel to and spaced from respective edges of the first pair of template elements, and a second pair of locating edges parallel to and spaced from respective edges of the second pair of template elements.

A jig as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the body element of the first templating device has a substantially planar rear face for locating against a door frame, in use, the rear face of the body element having a lateral edge that is located on one side of the face plate aperture; andat least one spacer arranged to extend from the rear face in a direction perpendicular to the rear face, the or each spacer having a substantially planar rear face for locating against a door frame, in use, and having a lateral edge that is located on the same side of the face plate aperture, wherein, in use, the lateral edge of the spacer is located inboard of the lateral edge of the rear face of the body element.

18. A jig as claimed in claim 17, wherein a distance by which the or each spacer extends from the rear face body element, in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element, is extendable.

19. A jig as claimed in claim 18, wherein each spacer comprises a plurality of stackable spacer portions.

A jig as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the body element of the first templating device has a substantially planar rear face for locating against a door frame, in use, and a stopper extending from the rear face of the body element in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element, wherein a position of the stopper in a transverse direction is variable.

21. A jig as claimed in claim 20, wherein a dimension of the stopper in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element is extendable.

22. A jig as claimed in claim 21, wherein the stopper comprises a plurality of stackable stopper portions.

A jig as claimed in claim 22, when dependent on any one of claims 17 to 19, wherein the stopper comprises a first stopper portion arranged to attach to the body element, and a second stopper portion arranged to attach to the first stopper portion so as to extend the dimension of the stopper in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element, wherein the or each spacer comprises at least a first spacer portion arranged to attach to the rear face of the body element, and wherein, in use, the dimension of the stopper in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element is greater than the dimension of the spacer in the same direction.

A jig as claimed in claim 23, wherein the stopper comprises a third stopper portion arranged to attach to the second stopper portion so as to extend the dimension of the stopper in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element, wherein the spacer comprises a second spacerportion arranged to attach to the first spacer portion so as to extend the dimension of the spacer in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element, and wherein, in use, the dimension of the stopper in a direction perpendicular to the rear face of the body element is greater than the dimension of the spacer in the same direction.

25. A method of forming a recess in a door frame for accommodating a door strike, the method comprising:providing a jig in accordance with any preceding claim;adjusting at least one dimension of the face plate aperture in dependence on a corresponding dimension of a face plate of the door strike to be installed;adjusting at least one dimension of the mortice aperture in dependence on a corresponding dimension of an opening of the face plate of the door strike to be installed;securing the first templating device to a door frame;forming a face plate recess in the door frame using the face plate aperture of the first templating device as a template for a cutting tool;locating the second templating device on the body element of the first templating device such that the mortice aperture overlies the opening of the body element of the first templating device, without further adjustment of the at least one dimension of the face plate aperture; andforming a mortice recess in the door frame using the mortice aperture of the second templating device as a template for a cutting tool.

26. A method as claimed in claim 25, wherein the recess is a first recess formed in a first door frame, the method further comprising:removing the first and second templating devices from the first door frame after formation of the face plate recess and mortice recess;securing the first templating device to a second door frame, separate to the first door frame, without further adjustment of the at least one dimension of the face plate aperture;forming a face plate recess in the second door frame using the face plate aperture of the first templating device as a template for a cutting tool;locating the second templating device on the first templating device, without further adjustment of the at least one dimension of the mortice aperture; andforming a mortice recess in the second door frame using the mortice aperture of the second templating device as a template for a cutting tool.41
