Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to floor panel for a flooring system, and a flooring system for a building, and in particular a flooring system for a building that houses multiple dwellings. The present invention also relates to a building comprising the flooring system, and a method of installing the flooring system. The present invention further relates to construction of at least part of the building using a building system comprising said flooring system, a method of constructing at least part of the building using the building system, and a kit of parts for use in constructing at least part of one or more units of the building. BACKGROUND Traditionally, the construction of buildings is a prolonged and time sensitive operation that has many different parts. For example, the use of poured concrete for the construction of parts of a building, such as floors, results in long wait times before any further work can be conducted on-site, as the concrete takes significant time to cure and can be prone to weather-related delays. A further issue to consider is the environmental impact relating to the use of copious amounts of concrete in the formation of floor assemblies. It has been estimated that between 4-8% of total global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be attributed to concrete. The embodied emissions for the use of concrete in the construction of a building can be assigned to a multitude of different elements, such as the highly energy intensive process required for the formation of the cement used in concrete as well as the reinforcement meshes used in formation of the concrete floor. Also, the logistical impact of the transport of the materials used for concrete as well as the concrete itself, and fuel usage associated with the use of vehicles such as diggers and lorries on site also contribute to the emissions problem. For multi-story buildings, this environmental impact will be further exacerbated, as concrete may be required for construction of each of the floors of the building. To reduce the embodied carbon of a building, the construction of wooden buildings such as timber-framed buildings have grown in popularity. Furthermore, the prefabrication of wooden panels in a factory environment for subsequent erection on-site, or in preconstructed modules has also led to such building approaches becoming popular, as they speed up the construction process significantly. However, for multi-story dwellings that house multiple units, such as multiple dwellings, there are other aspects to consider. For example, the transmission of noise from one dwelling to another dwelling situated beneath may be considered as a nuisance. Whilst prefabricated wooden flooring systems may counteract some of the issues listed above, such as embodied carbon and speed of construction, they may be more prone to transmitting noise from one dwelling to another dwelling situated below. Additionally, for multi-story buildings, it is of utmost importance that, in the event of a fire, the building is designed to provide residents of the building with as much time as possible to escape. This is particularly important for buildings housing multiple dwellings, as occupants may be unaware of a fire breaking out within the building until an alarm is raised, and it also provides emergency services with additional time to contain the spread of fire once the alarm is raised. It is therefore an object of the present invention to mitigate or obviate the concerns and disadvantages as detailed above. In non-limiting examples, where more than one bracing member is used, each bracing member used to brace a floor panel is spaced apart at 1.75m centres or less (e.g. 1.5m or 1.75m). Beneficially, this stiffens the or each floor panel 101 of the one or more floor panels 101 and inhibits the transmission of structure-borne sound from one unit to another unit or units within the building 2. The flooring system 100 may be configured to be top hung. In use, in a top-hung configuration, the flooring system 100 is configured to inhibit transmission of sound transmitted by flanking, and more specifically, the flooring system 100 is configured to inhibit transmission of sound transmitted by flanking from unit to another unit or units within the building 2. The flooring system 100 may be configured to be top hung from a wall of the building 2.
