Abstract

The product of this design is a knife stand that can be manufactured into a low-cost knife block with a minimal number of parts and processes by arranging identically shaped boards and storing knife blades in the gaps between them. The design is inspired by the triangular timbers used in Azekura-zukuri, a traditional Japanese architectural style. The combined wood construction ensures breathability and hygiene. Additionally, the sharp edges of the boards in plan view create a sharp impression, evoking the sharpness of knives. The knife stand itself is made of cypress, while the knife slots are made of oak, which is harder than cypress, making them less likely to scratch when they hit the slots. The product's shape and functionality allow for long-term use, leading to waste reduction and contributing to SDG goal 12, "Responsible Consumption and Production."
