Description

Detailed Description of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to a sunscreen composition comprising bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) and at least one film former selected from the group consisting of citric acid crosspolymers and polyamides, in combination with an alkanediol, with the proviso that the composition does not contain octocrylene, ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. The composition exhibits reduced soaping effect and therefore a more attractive skin feel and appearance.

[0002] Sunscreens should be effective and safe. In this respect, they contain different UVB and UVA filters. Among these UV filters, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) is particularly advantageous because it is a broad-spectrum UV absorber that absorbs UVB as well as UVA rays, is highly photostable, and has a strong synergistic effect on SPF when combined with, for example, bis-octrizole or iscotrizinol. Overall, based on the maximum concentration allowed by European law, it is currently considered the most effective UV absorber available, as measured by SPF.

[0003] However, sunscreens containing bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine tend to show a soaping effect. To prevent this, consumers tend to use less sunscreen, but at the same time, consumers are less protected. The harmful effects of UV rays on the skin are well known. Therefore, it is important for the industry to provide a solution to such types of problems to ensure that consumers apply enough sunscreen for proper protection.

[0004] It was therefore an object of the present invention to remedy the shortcomings of the prior art and to develop a sun care product containing bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) which exhibits reduced soaping effect, thus resulting in a more appealing skin feel.

[0005] Moreover, such sunscreens should be suitable for the US market and free of UV filter substances, which, despite their approval by approval authorities, are not without controversy that can lead to downgrading by some consumer magazines (e.g. eco-test).

[0006] Surprisingly, it has now been found that the use of certain film-forming agents can reduce the soaping effect.

[0007] Thus, in a first embodiment, the present invention provides a sunscreen composition comprising bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (BEMT) and at least one film former selected from the group consisting of citric acid polyesters and polyamides, with the proviso that the composition does not comprise octocrylene, ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. In a preferred embodiment, the composition further comprises at least one alkanediol.

[0008] Another subject of the present invention is directed to a method for reducing the soaping effect of a sunscreen composition containing bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, said method comprising the steps of adding to said composition at least one film former selected from the group consisting of citric acid polyesters and polyamides, and optionally evaluating the effect.

[0009] In a further embodiment, the present invention also relates to the use of at least one film former selected from the group consisting of citric acid polyesters and polyamides to reduce the soaping effect of bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine in a sunscreen composition.

[0010] Bis-ethylhexylphenol methoxyphenyl triazine (also referred to herein as BEMT) is also known as 2,4-bis{[4-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-2-hydroxy]phenyl}-6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (chemical name) or bemotrizinol (INN). BEMT acts as a broad spectrum UV filter absorbing UVB and UVA rays. It has two absorption peaks, 310 and 340 nm. BEMT is suggested for use in sun products, day care products, alphabet products such as BB creams, and whitening products.

[0011] In all embodiments of the invention, the amount of BEMT in the sunscreen composition according to the invention is advantageously chosen in the range of 0.4 to 10% by weight, preferably in the range of 0.4 to 9% by weight, 0.4 to 8% by weight, 0.4 to 7% by weight, 0.4 to 6% by weight, 0.4 to 5% by weight, 0.4 to 4% by weight, 0.4 to 3% by weight, 0.5 to 3% by weight, 0.8 to 9% by weight, 0.8 to 8% by weight, 0.8 to 7% by weight, 0.8 to 6% by weight, 0.8 to 5% by weight, 0.8 to 4% by weight, 0.8 to 3% by weight, for example in the range of 1 to 5% by weight, 1 to 3% by weight, 2 to 5% by weight or 2 to 4% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0012] The citric acid polyesters according to the present invention are made of citric acid, alcohols of different chain lengths (stearyl C 18 , Octyldodecyl C 20 and Behenyl C 22) and a crosslinking agent. Preferred citrate ester polymers according to the invention are (INCI names) Octyldodecyl Citrate Crosspolymer, Stearyl / Octyldodecyl Citrate Crosspolymer and Behenyl Citrate / Octyldodecyl Propanediol Crosspolymer. Said polymers are marketed under the trade name CosmoSurf® at Ultra Chemical Inc., USA. Said polymers are commercially available, for example, from Croda under the trade name Oleocraft™. Most preferably, the polyamide according to the invention is Polyamide-8, commercially available as Oleocraft L-20 from Croda.

[0014] In all embodiments of the present invention, the preferred film former is polyamide, as it provides a more pronounced reduction in soaping effect. In all embodiments of the present invention, the use of polyamide-8 as a film former, and even more preferably as the only film former, is most preferred.

[0015] In all embodiments of the invention, the (total) amount of film-forming agents in the sunscreen composition according to the invention is advantageously at least 0.1% by weight and at most 10% by weight, preferably chosen in the range 0.5-10% by weight, more preferably in the range 0.75-6% by weight, most preferably in the range 1-5% by weight, for example in the range 1-4% by weight, 2-4% by weight or 2.5-3.5% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0016] In all embodiments of the present invention, the ratio of the total amount of the at least one film-forming polymer to the total amount of BEMT is preferably selected in the range of 0.1:5 to 5:0.1, preferably in the range of 0.5:2.5 to 2.5:0.5, most preferably in the range of 0.5:1 to 1:0.5.
