Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for making a high temperature composite, which is a carbon-carbon composite, a carbon-ceramic matrix composite, or a carbon-silica composite, comprising the steps of: a. making a precursor part from a resin comprising a poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) copolymer comprising at least two different repeat units, one of the repeat units being present in an amount of 50-78 mol % relative to the total amount of repeat units constituting the copolymer, and at least one reinforcing material; b. pyrolyzing the precursor part to form a pyrolyzed part; c. injecting a liquid second resin into the pyrolyzed part to form an infused part; and d. pyrolyzing the infused part to form a carbon-carbon composite, a carbon-ceramic matrix composite, or a carbon-silica composite, optionally repeating steps c. through d. one or more times.
