Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to an aerosol generating system comprising an aerosol-forming substrate disposable between electrodes such that the aerosol-forming substrate and the electrodes form a capacitor. The present invention also relates to an aerosol generating device comprising electrodes spaced apart such that the aerosol-forming substrate can be disposed between the electrodes to form a capacitor. [Background technology]
[0002] One type of aerosol generating system is an electrically operated smoking system. Known handheld electrically operated smoking systems generally include an aerosol generating device that includes a battery, control electronics, and an electric heater for heating an aerosol generating article specifically designed for use with the aerosol generating device. In some embodiments, the aerosol generating article includes an aerosol-forming substrate, such as a tobacco rod or tobacco plug, and a heater housed within the aerosol generating device is inserted into or around the aerosol-forming substrate when the aerosol generating article is inserted into the aerosol generating device.
[0003] Typically, an aerosol-generating device is configured to generate heat using an electric heater according to a predetermined heating profile. However, changes in the aerosol-forming substrate may result in undesirable changes in the user experience. For example, in a high humidity environment, the aerosol-forming substrate may exhibit a high water content. Since water is aerosolized at the typical operating temperature of the aerosol-generating device, a high water content may result in an unnecessarily high aerosol temperature perceived by the user. In another example, an aerosol-forming substrate that has already been heated may exhibit a low water content. The low water content may result in reduced heat transfer from the aerosol-forming substrate when the user attempts to reheat the aerosol-forming substrate in the aerosol-generating device. The reduced heat transfer from the aerosol-forming substrate may result in overheating of the aerosol-generating device.
[0004] It would be desirable to provide an aerosol generating device which alleviates or overcomes at least some of the disadvantages associated with known aerosol generating devices, and in particular, it is desirable to provide an aerosol generating device which allows for monitoring the amount of water present in the aerosol-forming substrate prior to heating of the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0005] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided an aerosol generating system comprising an aerosol-generating article comprising an aerosol-forming substrate, the aerosol-forming substrate being a dielectric material, an aerosol generating device, a first electrode and a second electrode. The aerosol-forming substrate is preferably a substantially solid aerosol-forming substrate. The aerosol generating device comprises a power source, at least one heater and a cavity for receiving the aerosol-generating article. The aerosol generating device further comprises a controller configured to control the supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater for heating the aerosol-forming substrate when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity. The second electrode is spaced apart from the first electrode such that at least a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate is received between the first electrode and the second electrode when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity. The first electrode, a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate and the second electrode form a capacitor when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity. The controller of the aerosol generating device is further configured to measure the capacitance of the capacitor via the first and second electrodes when the aerosol generating article is received in the recess, supply power from the power source to the at least one heater with a first power profile if the measured capacitance is within a predetermined first range, and supply power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile different from the first power profile if the measured capacitance is within a predetermined second range.
[0006] Advantageously, the controller is configured to measure a capacitance of a capacitor formed by the first electrode, the second electrode, and a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity, and to vary the power supply to the at least one heater based on the measured capacitance.
[0007] Advantageously, the measured capacitance may indicate an amount of water present in the aerosol-forming substrate between the first electrode and the second electrode. A relatively high measured capacitance may indicate a relatively high water content. A relatively low measured capacitance may indicate a relatively low water content. The controller varies the power supply to the at least one heater based on the measured capacitance. Advantageously, varying the power supply to the at least one heater based on the measured capacitance may enable the system to generate an aerosol with consistent characteristics.
[0008] Capacitive sensing of aerosol-forming substrates is known in aerosol generating systems. See, for example, International Patent Application Publication Nos. WO2017 / 051006A1, WO2017 / 051011A1 and WO2017 / 051016A1 (Philip Morris Products SA). In these publications, measurements of the capacitance of a capacitor that includes an aerosol-forming substrate between two electrodes are used to provide an indication of the amount of one or more volatile compounds in the aerosol-forming substrate. This information is then used to determine when the one or more volatile compounds in the aerosol-forming substrate are depleted, and to stop heating the substrate when the one or more volatile compounds are depleted.
[0009] The inventors of the present invention have recognised that it is also possible to use capacitive sensing of the aerosol-forming substrate to control the power supplied to the heater to improve the consistency of the properties of the aerosol generated from the aerosol-forming substrate and, consequently, to improve the user experience.
[0010] The moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate can affect the water vapor content of the aerosol generated from the substrate. In particular, an increase in the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate can result in an increase in the moisture content of the aerosol generated from the substrate. The moisture content of the aerosol can affect the apparent temperature of the aerosol, which is the temperature of the aerosol perceived by the user. Typically, an increase in the moisture content of the aerosol results in an increase in the apparent temperature of the aerosol. Therefore, it is generally desirable to maintain the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate at a constant level. However, the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate can be affected by several factors, such as how the aerosol-forming substrate is stored and the ambient humidity of the environment in which the aerosol generating system is used. As a result, it can be difficult to maintain the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate at a constant level.
[0011] The inventors of the present invention have recognized that measurements of the capacitance of a capacitor formed by an aerosol-forming substrate disposed between a pair of electrodes are particularly sensitive to the presence of water in the aerosol-forming substrate and to changes in the volume fraction of water in the aerosol-forming substrate. The capacitance of a capacitor is a function of the relative dielectric constant of the material disposed between the electrodes of the capacitor. The relative dielectric constant, or dielectric constant, of a material indicates the tendency of the material to polarize in response to an applied electric field. Water tends to have a relatively high relative dielectric constant compared to other materials present in aerosol-forming substrates such as tobacco and aerosol formers such as propylene glycol. Thus, capacitive sensing of an aerosol-forming substrate can be particularly effective in providing an indication of the water content of the aerosol-forming substrate and in sensing changes in the water content of the aerosol-forming substrate.
[0012] The inventors of the present invention may also use an indication of the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate provided by the capacitance measurement of the substrate to control the temperature of the aerosol generated from the substrate by controlling the temperature of a heater that heats the substrate to generate the aerosol. Controlling the temperature of the heater that heats the substrate to generate the aerosol may be accomplished by controlling the power supply to the heater based on the capacitance measurement. Thus, controlling the power supply to the heater that heats the aerosol-forming substrate based on the capacitance measurement of the aerosol-forming substrate may enable the aerosol generating system to generate an aerosol having consistent characteristics.
[0013] The aerosol generating device comprises a controller configured to control the supply of power from the power source to at least one heater, in particular the controller is configured to control the supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater for heating the aerosol-forming substrate when the aerosol-generating article is received within the cavity.
[0014] As used herein, the term "power" may be used to refer to the instantaneous power supplied to a heater, but is typically used to refer to the actual or average power supplied to a heater over a period of time. In particular, when power is supplied to a heater via an alternating voltage or current, the term "power" refers to the actual power supplied to the heater.
[0015] The controller may be configured to control the supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater in any suitable manner, for example, the controller may be configured to supply power from the power source to the at least one heater after start-up of the system or intermittently, such as after every puff.
[0016] In some preferred embodiments, the controller may be configured to provide power from the power source to the electric heater in the form of pulses of current. In these preferred embodiments, the controller may be configured to control the power supply to the heater by controlling the duty cycle of the power supply to the heater. As used herein, the term "duty cycle" refers to the relative wattage output of the power source compared to the maximum wattage output of the power source. Thus, a 70% duty cycle indicates that the power source delivers a wattage output that is 70% of the maximum wattage output that the power source is capable of delivering. The controller may be configured to control the duty cycle by any suitable means. For example, the controller may be configured to control the duty cycle by pulse width modulation.
[0017] The controller is configured to supply power from the power source to the at least one heater according to a predetermined power profile. The predetermined power profile may be stored in a memory of the controller. The controller may be configured to supply a constant power to the heater according to the predetermined power profile. The controller may be configured to supply a time-varying power to the heater according to the predetermined power profile. For example, the controller may be configured to supply a first power to the heater for a first predetermined period of time and then supply a second power to the heater for a second predetermined period of time according to the predetermined power profile.
[0018] The controller of the aerosol generating device is further configured to measure a capacitance of the capacitor via the first electrode and the second electrode when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity. The controller is configured to control the supply of power to the at least one heater based on the measured capacitance. The controller may be configured to control the supply of power to the at least one heater based on the measured capacitance in any suitable manner.
[0019] In particular, the controller may be configured to supply a normal power profile to the at least one heater when the capacitance measurements indicate that the water content in the aerosol-forming substrate is within a normal operating level, and to supply a modified power profile to the at least one heater when the capacitance measurements indicate that the water content in the aerosol-forming substrate is above or below the normal operating level.
[0020] The controller may be configured to supply a low power profile to the at least one heater when the capacitance measurements indicate that the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate is above a normal operating level. The low power profile may supply a lower power to the heater compared to the normal power profile. Reducing the power supplied to the heater to heat the moist aerosol-forming substrate may reduce the temperature of the aerosol generated from the moist aerosol-forming substrate below the temperature of an aerosol generated from a non-moist aerosol-forming substrate heated by a heater supplied with the normal power profile. This may reduce the perceived temperature of the aerosol generated from the moist aerosol-forming substrate to the normal perceived temperature of an aerosol generated from a non-moist aerosol-forming substrate.
[0021] Supplying a low power profile to the heater during the initial period may allow the heater to remove excess moisture from the aerosol-forming substrate over the initial period such that the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate is within normal operating levels after the initial period. Thus, the controller may be configured to supply a low power profile to the at least one heater when the capacitance measurements indicate that the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate is above normal operating levels, and may be further configured to supply a normal power profile to the heater after a predetermined initial period.
[0022] Similarly, in some embodiments, the controller may be configured to supply a high power profile to the at least one heater when the capacitance measurements indicate that the moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate is below a normal operating level. The high power profile may supply a higher power to the heater compared to the normal power profile. Increasing the power supplied to the heater to heat the dry aerosol-forming substrate may increase the temperature of the aerosol generated from the dry aerosol-forming substrate above the temperature of the aerosol generated from a non-dry aerosol-forming substrate heated by a heater supplied with the normal power profile. This may increase the perceived temperature of the aerosol generated from the dry aerosol-forming substrate to the normal perceived temperature of the aerosol generated from a non-dry aerosol-forming substrate.
[0023] The controller may be configured to supply power from the power source to the heater with distinct power profiles, each power profile being associated with a particular range of measured capacitance. The controller may be configured to supply power from the power source to the heater with any suitable number of power profiles. The controller may be configured to vary the power profile supplied to the heater as a function of the measured capacitance. The controller may be configured to continuously vary the power supply from the power source to the heater as a function of the measured capacitance.
[0024] The controller is configured to supply power from the power source to the at least one heater with a first power profile when the measured capacitance is within a predetermined first range, and to supply power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile, different from the first power profile, when the measured capacitance is within a predetermined second range.
[0025] The predetermined range may be any suitable type of range.
[0026] In some embodiments, the predetermined range may be any value above a predetermined threshold. In some embodiments, the predetermined range may be any value below a predetermined threshold. In other words, the predetermined range may be an open range.
[0027] In some embodiments, the predetermined range may be between a predetermined upper threshold and a predetermined lower threshold, in other words, the predetermined range may be a closed range.
[0028] In some preferred embodiments, the first given range and the second given range are contiguous ranges, such that the upper limit of one range is equal to the lower limit of the other range.
[0029] In some embodiments, the first predetermined range is an open range and the second predetermined range is an open range. In these embodiments, the controller is configured to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a first power profile when the measured capacitance exceeds a first predetermined threshold and to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile that is different from the first power profile when the measured capacitance is equal to or less than a second predetermined threshold. In some preferred embodiments, the first predetermined threshold is equal to the second predetermined threshold. In these preferred embodiments, the controller is configured to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a first power profile when the measured capacitance exceeds a first predetermined threshold and to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile that is different from the first power profile when the measured capacitance is equal to or less than a second predetermined threshold.
[0030] In some embodiments, one of the first predetermined range and the second predetermined range is an open range, and the other of the first predetermined range is a closed range.
[0031] In some embodiments, the first predetermined range is a closed range and the second predetermined range is an open range. In these embodiments, the controller may be configured to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a first power profile when the measured capacitance is between a first predetermined lower threshold and a first predetermined upper threshold, and to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile that is different from the first power profile when the measured capacitance is between a second predetermined lower threshold and a second predetermined upper threshold. In some preferred embodiments, the first predetermined lower threshold is equal to the second predetermined upper threshold. In these preferred embodiments, the controller is configured to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a first power profile when the measured capacitance is between a predetermined middle threshold and a predetermined upper threshold, and to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile that is different from the first power profile when the measured capacitance is between a predetermined middle threshold and a predetermined lower threshold.
[0032] In some preferred embodiments, the controller is further configured to prevent the supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater based on the capacitance measurement. The controller may be configured to prevent the supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater based on a comparison of the capacitance measurement to one or more of a predetermined upper threshold and a predetermined lower threshold.
[0033] The predetermined upper threshold may indicate a maximum acceptable moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate above which aerosol generated from the aerosol-forming substrate is unacceptable to a user. The controller may be configured to prevent the supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater if the capacitance measurement exceeds the predetermined threshold.
[0034] The predetermined lower threshold may indicate a minimum acceptable moisture content of the aerosol-forming substrate below which aerosol generated from the aerosol-forming substrate is unacceptable to a user. The controller may be configured to prevent supply of power from the power source to the at least one heater if the capacitance measurement is below the predetermined lower threshold.
[0035] In some embodiments, the controller may be configured to prevent power from being supplied from the power source to the at least one heater if the capacitance measurement is outside a predetermined acceptable range, the acceptable range being defined between a predetermined upper threshold and a predetermined lower threshold.
[0036] In some preferred embodiments, the controller is further configured to measure the capacitance before supplying power from the power source to the at least one heater to heat the aerosol-forming substrate. One or more capacitance measurements taken before power is supplied to the at least one heater to heat the aerosol-forming substrate can be used to control the initial power supplied to the heater to heat the aerosol-forming substrate. Advantageously, measuring the capacitance before power is supplied to the heater to heat the aerosol-forming substrate makes it possible to control the power supplied to the heater from the start of the heating cycle.
[0037] In some preferred embodiments, the controller is further configured to periodically measure the capacitance and adjust the power supplied to the heater for heating the aerosol-forming substrate based on the measured capacitance at periodic intervals. In other words, the controller may be configured to repeatedly measure the capacitance throughout the heating cycle and adjust the power supplied to the heater throughout the heating cycle based on the most recent capacitance measurements. Advantageously, periodically measuring the capacitance throughout the heating cycle may enable the aerosol generating system to generate an aerosol having consistent characteristics throughout the heating cycle. The length of time between successive periodic measurements of the capacitance may be any suitable length of time. For example, the interval between successive periodic measurements of the capacitance may be between about 0.5 seconds and about 30 seconds, or may be at least about 0.5 seconds, at least about 1 second, at least about 1.5 seconds, or at least about 2 seconds.
[0038] In some embodiments, the aerosol generating device includes means for detecting a puff, and in these embodiments the controller may be configured to measure the capacitance when a puff is detected.
[0039] In some preferred embodiments, the controller is further configured to determine when an aerosol-generating article has been received within the cavity based on the measured capacitance. The controller may then be configured to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with one of the first and second power profiles when an aerosol-generating article has been determined to be received within the cavity. Thus, advantageously, the capacitance measurements may be used to determine the presence of an aerosol-generating article within the cavity of the device. Using the capacitance measurements to determine the presence of an aerosol-generating article within the cavity may enable the aerosol-generating device to provide this functionality without the need to provide additional components or sensors within the aerosol-generating device.
[0040] The aerosol generating device may include a temperature sensor arranged to sense an ambient temperature, and the controller is arranged to determine the ambient temperature based on a signal received from the temperature sensor. The temperature sensor may comprise a thermistor. The temperature sensor may comprise a thermocouple. The temperature sensor may comprise a semiconductor temperature sensor.
[0041] The inventors of the present invention have recognized that when the ambient temperature is low, it is not necessary to supply power to the at least one heater according to the power profile for a substrate having a high moisture content when the capacitance measurement of the substrate indicates that the substrate has a high moisture content. In particular, advantageously, the low temperature of ambient air entering the aerosol generating device during use may be sufficient to maintain the temperature of the generated aerosol at a level acceptable to the user, even when the aerosol-forming substrate has a high moisture content. In other words, in these embodiments, the controller determines the power supplied to the heater according to the capacitance measurement and the ambient temperature measurement.
[0042] In some embodiments, the controller may be configured to provide power from the power source to the at least one heater with a second power profile if the measured capacitance is within a first predetermined range when the measured ambient temperature is below a predetermined ambient temperature threshold. The ambient temperature threshold is preferably between about 15 degrees Celsius and about 25 degrees Celsius, and preferably between about 17 degrees Celsius and about 23 degrees Celsius. The ambient temperature threshold may be 18 degrees Celsius.
[0043] The controller may be configured to measure the capacitance of a capacitor formed by the first electrode, the second electrode, and a portion of the aerosol-generating article disposed in any suitable manner between the first and second electrodes. In particular, the controller may be configured to measure the capacitance of the capacitor by supplying power in the form of an alternating current from a power source to the first and second electrodes. The alternating current may have any suitable frequency, preferably in the range of about 100 kHz to 1 GHz. In the frequency range of about 100 kHz to 1 GHz, the relative permeability can be considered constant, particularly if loss components occurring at high and low frequencies are ignored.
[0044] The aerosol generating system comprises a first electrode and a second electrode spaced from the first electrode such that at least a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate is received between the first and second electrodes when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity. Advantageously, when the aerosol-generating article is received in the cavity of the aerosol generating device, the first electrode, the second electrode and the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate disposed between the first and second electrodes form a capacitor.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0131] 1 shows an aerosol generating device 110 comprising a housing 112 defining a cavity 114 for receiving an aerosol-generating article. The device 110 includes a heater 116 having a base portion 118 and an elongated heater blade 120 that penetrates the aerosol-generating article when the article is inserted into the cavity 114. The heater blade 120 includes a resistive heating coil 122 for resistively heating an upstream end of an aerosol-generating article inserted into the cavity 114. A controller 124 controls the operation of the device 110, including the supply of electrical current to the resistive heating coil 122 of the heater blade 120 from a power source 126 in the form of a lithium iron phosphate battery.
[0132] The resistive heating coil 122 also forms a first electrode 128. A second electrode 130 is provided on a cylindrical inner surface 133 of the recess 114. In Figure 1, the second electrode 130 is shown on one side of the recess 114. However, it will be appreciated that in other embodiments, the second electrode 130 may be an annular electrode that surrounds the inner surface 133 of the recess 114.
[0133] Figure 2 shows an aerosol-generating article 140 for use in the aerosol-generating device 110 of Figure 1. The aerosol-generating article 140 comprises an aerosol-forming substrate 142, a hollow acetate tube 144, a polymeric filter 146, a mouthpiece 148, and an outer wrapper 150. The aerosol-forming substrate 142 comprises a plug of tobacco and the mouthpiece 148 comprises a plug of cellulose acetate fibre.
[0134] 3 shows an aerosol-generating article 140 inserted into a cavity 114 of an aerosol-generating device 110. After insertion of the article 140 into the cavity 114, the pointed tip 136 of the heater blade 120 penetrates the aerosol-forming substrate 142, and the aerosol-forming substrate 142 is received on the heater blade 120 such that a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 is positioned between the first electrode 128 and the second electrode 130 when the aerosol-generating article 140 is fully inserted into the cavity 114. In this position, when the aerosol-generating article 140 is received within the cavity 114, the first electrode 128, the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 between the first electrode 128 and the second electrode 130, and the second electrode 130 form a capacitor. The dielectric material of the capacitor is formed by the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 positioned between the first electrode 128 and the second electrode 130.
[0135] The controller 124 is configured to provide power from the power supply 126 to the heater blade 120 in a heating cycle to heat the aerosol-forming substrate 142 sufficiently to generate an aerosol.
[0136] When the aerosol-generating article 140 is received in the cavity 114 of the device 110, the controller 124 measures the capacitance of a capacitor formed from the first electrode 128, a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142, and the second electrode 130 before the controller 124 provides power from the power source 126 to the heater blade 120 in a heating cycle to heat the aerosol-forming substrate 142. The measured capacitance provides an indication of the amount of water that is within the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 between the first electrode 128 and the second electrode 130.
[0137] The controller 124 is configured to use the measured capacitance to adjust the power supplied from the power source 126 to the heater blade 120 during a heating cycle. Adjusting the power supplied to the heater 120 adjusts the temperature to which the heater blade 120 is heated during a heating cycle. The controller 124 is configured to compare the measured capacitance to a predetermined threshold stored in the memory of the controller and adjust the power supplied from the power source 126 to the heater blade 120 based on the comparison. Thus, the controller 124 is configured to supply a first power to the heater blade 120 when the capacitance indicates that the amount of water in the aerosol-forming substrate is below the predetermined threshold, and the controller 124 is configured to supply a second power, less than the first power, to the heater blade 120 when the capacitance indicates that the amount of water in the aerosol-forming substrate is above the predetermined threshold. In other words, the controller 124 applies a first power to the heater blades 120 when the capacitance is within a first range, and the controller 124 applies a second power, lower than the first power, to the heater blades 120 when the capacitance is within a second range that is higher than the first range.
[0138] Figure 4 shows an aerosol generating device 210 according to a second embodiment of the invention. The aerosol generating device 210 is similar to the aerosol generating device 110 shown in Figure 1, and substantially similar reference numerals are used to designate similar parts. The aerosol generating device 210 comprises a housing 212 defining a cavity 214 for receiving the aerosol generating article 140 of Figure 2. The device 210 includes a heater 216 having a base portion 218 and an elongated heater blade 220 that penetrates the aerosol generating article when the aerosol generating article is inserted into the cavity 214. The heater blade 220 includes a resistive heating coil 222 for resistively heating the upstream end of an aerosol generating article inserted into the cavity 214. A controller 224 controls the operation of the device 210, including the supply of current from a power source 226 in the form of a lithium iron phosphate battery to the resistive heating coil 222 of the heater blade 220.
[0139] The resistive heating coil 222 also forms a first electrode 228. An electrical contact 230 is provided on a cylindrical inner surface 233 of the recess 214 at a location radially outward of the first electrode 228. In Figure 4, the connector 230 is shown on one side of the recess 214. However, it will be appreciated that in other embodiments the electrical contact 230 may be an annular contact that surrounds the inner surface 233 of the recess 214.
[0140] The aerosol generation device 210 further includes a tubular extractor 260 slidably receivable within the recess 214. The tubular extractor 260 is shown within the device 210 in Figures 4 and 6, and is shown removed from the device 210 in Figure 5.
[0141] The tubular extractor 260 includes a generally cylindrical tubular housing 262 having an open end for receiving the aerosol-generating article 140 and a partially closed end 266 having a slit for slidably receiving the heater blade 220 when the extractor 260 is received within the recess 214. The extractor 260 has a cylindrical inner surface defining an extractor recess 264 sized to slidably receive the aerosol-generating article 140, and a cylindrical outer surface 265 substantially similar to the inner surface 233 of the recess 214 such that the extractor 260 is slidably receiveable within the recess 214.
[0142] The extractor 260 reduces the force experienced by the aerosol-generating article 140 when it is removed from the recess 214, as compared to an article being removed from a recess of the system without the use of a tubular extractor. This reduces the chance of the aerosol-generating article 140 being damaged when it is removed from the recess 214. As an example, the housing 262 of the extractor 260 protects the wrapper 150 of the article 140 from friction with the inner surface 233 of the recess when the extractor 260 is pulled out of the recess 214 to remove the article 140 from the recess 214. As another example, the partially closed end 266 of the extractor 260 presses against the end surface of the article 140 when the article 140 is removed from the recess 214 by the extractor, thereby reducing or eliminating tension on the wrapper 150 when the article is removed from the recess 214.
[0143] The apparatus 210 further includes a second electrode 268 disposed on a portion of the exterior surface 265 of the housing 262 of the extractor 260. The second electrode 268 is disposed on the exterior surface 265 of the housing 262 of the extractor 260 and is disposed to contact the electrical contact 230 on the interior surface 133 of the recess 114 when the extractor 260 is received within the recess 214 and the heater blade 220 extends into the slot at the at least partially closed end 266 of the extractor 260.
[0144] In this embodiment, the second electrode 268 is annular such that it will contact the electrical contact 230 regardless of the rotational orientation of the extractor 260 within the recess 214. Of course, in other embodiments, the contact 230 may be annular rather than the second electrode 268, or both the contact 230 and the second electrode 268 may be annular.
[0145] When the second electrode 268 contacts the electrical contact 230, the second electrode 268 is electrically connected to the controller 224 of the device 210. It will be appreciated that in some embodiments, at least a portion of the second electrode 268 may be disposed on an inner surface of the extractor housing 262, and in some embodiments, at least a portion of the tubular housing 262 of the extractor 260 may form the second electrode 268.
[0146] 6 shows the aerosol-generating article 140 inserted into the extractor recess 264, and the extractor 260 and article 140 inserted into the recess 214 of the aerosol-generating device 210. After insertion of the article 140 and extractor 260 into the recess 214, the pointed tip 236 of the heater blade 220 is received into the slot in the partially closed end 266 of the extractor 260 and penetrates the aerosol-forming substrate 142. The aerosol-forming substrate 142 is received over the heater blade 220 such that when the aerosol-generating article 140 is fully received in the extractor recess 264 and the extractor 260 and article 140 are fully received in the recess 114, a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 is positioned between the first electrode 228 and the second electrode 268. In this position, the first electrode 228, the aerosol-forming substrate 142 between the first electrode 228 and the second electrode 268, and the second electrode 268 form a capacitor. The dielectric material of the capacitor is formed by a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 positioned between the first electrode and the second electrode.
[0147] The controller 224 of the device 210 is configured to measure the capacitance of a capacitor formed by the first electrode 228, a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 142 between the first electrode 228 and the second electrode 268, and the second electrode 268 in the manner described above with reference to the device 110 shown in FIG. 1.

The aerosol generating device 310 includes a housing 312 defining a cavity 314 for receiving an aerosol-generating article. The device 310 includes a heater 316 having a base portion 318 and an elongated heater blade 320 that penetrates the aerosol-generating article when the article is inserted into the cavity 314. The heater blade 320 includes a resistive heating coil 322 for resistively heating an upstream end of an aerosol-generating article inserted into the cavity 314. A controller 324 controls the operation of the device 310, including the supply of electrical current to the resistive heating coil 322 of the heater blade 320 from a battery 326 in the form of a lithium iron phosphate battery.
[0149] The resistive heating coil 322 also forms a first electrode 328. An annular electrical contact 330 is provided on the cylindrical inner surface 133 of the cavity 314 at a position aligned with the first electrode 328 along the length of the cavity 314.
[0150] Figure 8 shows an aerosol-generating article 340 for use in the aerosol-generating device 310 of Figure 7. The aerosol-generating article 340 comprises an aerosol-forming substrate 342, a hollow acetate tube 344, a polymeric filter 346, a mouthpiece 348, and an outer wrapper 350. The aerosol-forming substrate 342 comprises a plug of tobacco and the mouthpiece 348 comprises a plug of cellulose acetate fibre.
[0151] The aerosol-generating article 340 further includes a second electrode 352 secured to the outer wrapper 350 adjacent to the aerosol-forming substrate 342. For clarity, the thickness of the first electrode 352 is exaggerated in FIG.
[0152] The electrical contact 330 is positioned to contact the second electrode 352 when the aerosol-generating article 340 is fully inserted into the recess 314. The electrical contact 330 is annular so that it contacts the second electrode 352 regardless of the rotational orientation of the aerosol-generating article 340 within the recess 314. Of course, in other embodiments, the second electrode 352 may be annular rather than the electrical contact 330, or both the electrical contact 330 and the second electrode 352 may be annular.
[0153] 9 shows an aerosol-generating article 340 inserted into a cavity 314 of an aerosol-generating device 310. After insertion of the article 340 into the cavity 314, the pointed tip 336 of the heater blade 320 penetrates the aerosol-forming substrate 342, and the aerosol-forming substrate 342 is received on the heater blade 320 such that a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 342 is positioned between the first electrode 328 and the second electrode 330 when the aerosol-generating article 340 is fully inserted into the cavity 314. In this position, when the aerosol-generating article 340 is received within the cavity 314, the first electrode 328, the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 342 between the first electrode 328 and the second electrode 352, and the second electrode 352 form a capacitor. The dielectric material of the capacitor is formed by the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 342 positioned between the first electrode 328 and the second electrode 352.
[0154] The controller 324 of the device 310 is configured to measure the capacitance of a capacitor formed by the first electrode 328, a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 342 between the first electrode 328 and the second electrode 352, and the second electrode 352 in the manner described above with reference to the device 110 shown in FIG. 1.
[0155] Figure 10 shows an aerosol generating device 410 according to a fourth embodiment of the present invention. The aerosol generating device 410 is substantially similar to the aerosol generating device 110 of Figure 1, and like reference numerals are used to designate like parts. The aerosol generating device 410 includes a housing 412 defining a cavity 414 for receiving an aerosol-generating article. The device 410 includes a heater 416 having a base portion 418 and an elongated heater blade 420 that penetrates the aerosol-generating article when the article is inserted into the cavity 414. The heater blade 420 includes a resistive heating coil 422 for resistively heating an upstream end of an aerosol-generating article inserted into the cavity 414. A controller 424 controls the operation of the device 410, including the supply of current to the resistive heating coil 422 of the heater blade 420 from a battery 426 in the form of a lithium iron phosphate battery.
[0156] In this embodiment, the resistive heating coil 422 does not form the first electrode. A first electrical contact 428 is provided on the cylindrical inner surface 433 of the recess 414 at a position along the length of the recess 414 in line with the resistive heating coil 422. A second electrical contact 430 is also provided on the cylindrical inner surface 433 opposite the first electrical contact 428. Both the first and second electrical contacts are electrically connected to a controller 424 of the device 410.
[0157] Figure 11 shows an aerosol-generating article 440 for use in the aerosol-generating device 410 of Figure 10. The aerosol-generating article 440 comprises an aerosol-forming substrate 442, a hollow acetate tube 444, a polymeric filter 446, a mouthpiece 448, and an outer wrapper 450. The aerosol-forming substrate 442 comprises a plug of tobacco and the mouthpiece 448 comprises a plug of cellulose acetate fibre.
[0158] The aerosol-generating article 440 further includes a first electrode 452 secured to one side of the outer wrapper 450 adjacent to the aerosol-forming substrate 442. The aerosol-generating article 440 further includes a second electrode 454 secured to an opposite side of the outer wrapper 450 adjacent to the aerosol-forming substrate 442. The first and second electrodes are substantially identical and each extends around slightly less than half the circumference of the article 440 such that the electrodes do not overlap or touch. The first electrode 452, the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 442 between the first electrode 428 and the second electrode 452, and the second electrode 452 form a capacitor. The dielectric material of the capacitor is formed by the portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 442 positioned between the first and second electrodes.
[0159] For clarity, the thickness of the first and second electrodes is exaggerated in FIG.
[0160] A first electrical contact 428 of the device 410 is positioned to contact one of the first electrode 452 and the second electrode 454 of the article 440, and a second electrical contact 430 of the device 410 is positioned to contact the other of the first electrode 452 and the second electrode 454 of the article 440 when the aerosol-generating article 440 is fully inserted into the recess 414. Because the first and second electrodes each extend around substantially half of the circumference of the article 440, each of the first and second contacts of the device 410 will contact one of the electrodes of the article 440 regardless of the rotational orientation of the aerosol-generating article 440 within the recess 414.
[0161] 12 shows an aerosol-generating article 440 inserted into a cavity 414 of an aerosol-generating device 410. After insertion of the article 440 into the cavity 414, the pointed tip 436 of the heater blade 420 penetrates the aerosol-forming substrate 442, which is received over the heater blade 420 such that, when the aerosol-generating article 340 is fully inserted into the cavity 414, one of the first and second electrical contacts contacts the first electrode 452 and the other of the first and second electrical contacts contacts the second electrode 454.
[0162] The controller 424 of the device 410 is configured to measure the capacitance of a capacitor formed by the first electrode 452, a portion of the aerosol-forming substrate 442 between the first electrode 452 and the second electrode 454, and the second electrode 454 in the manner described above with reference to the device 110 shown in FIG. 1.
[0163] The controller of the above-mentioned aerosol-generating device does not necessarily need to be configured to determine the volume fraction of water present in the aerosol-forming substrate. A predetermined relationship between the capacitance and the volume fraction of water present in the aerosol-forming substrate may be used to determine a threshold value to which the measured capacitance may be compared to determine the power supplied to the heater. However, in some embodiments, the controller may be configured to determine the volume fraction of water in the aerosol-forming substrate between the first electrode and the second electrode. In these embodiments, the volume fraction of water in the aerosol-forming substrate may be calculated as follows:
[0164] The relative dielectric constant of a material is typically a function of temperature and frequency of the applied electric field. The relative dielectric constant of water can be assumed to be about 80 at a temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius and at an applied frequency of about 100 kHz to 1 GHz.
[0165] If the geometry of the electrodes and the material between the electrodes are known, the relative bulk permeabilities of the material between the electrodes can be determined. Furthermore, if the material between the electrodes is known, the volume fraction of the material between the electrodes, along with their respective relative dielectric constants, can be determined from capacitance measurements.
[0166] As an example, the Landau-Lifsch-Loenga dielectric mixing equation may be used to determine the relative permittivity of a mixture of two components with individual dielectric constants, as shown in Equation 1 below.
number
[0167] The relationship between capacitance and the relative bulk dielectric constant of the material between the electrodes depends on the geometry of the capacitor. For example, in an embodiment in which the first electrode is formed by a heating element extending centrally through the aerosol-forming substrate and the second electrode is formed by a cylindrical foil wrapper surrounding the aerosol-forming substrate, the capacitor approximates a cylindrical capacitor and the capacitance of the capacitor is given by Equation 2 below:
number
[0168] If the radii of the first and second electrodes are known, and the relative dielectric constants of the water and the aerosol-forming substrate are known, then the measured capacitance between the first and second electrodes can be inserted into Equation 2 to determine the relative bulk permeability, and the relative bulk permeability can be inserted into Equation 1 to determine the volume fraction of water in the aerosol-forming substrate. The given volume fraction of water or the absolute volume of water in the aerosol-forming substrate can be used to control the power supplied to the heater.
[0169] It will be appreciated that the above-described embodiments are merely exemplary embodiments of the invention, and it will also be appreciated that the features described above in relation to one embodiment of the invention may also be applied to other embodiments of the invention.
