Modes for Carrying Out the Invention

[0021] The term "article" is understood herein to mean a combination consisting of a water-insoluble support and a composition impregnated on the support. This article may in particular be a wipe, but it may also have any form including those described below. The water-insoluble substrate is absorbent and strong enough not to disintegrate during its use. The use of the article as defined above is for skin or hair care and / or cleaning and / or removing makeup from the skin and / or scrubbing the skin.

[0022] In some embodiments, the article can be formed from synthetic materials such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate, or polyester) and PP (polypropylene), which can be used alone or in combination with natural-based materials. In some embodiments, the article can be formed from sustainable and biodegradable substrates from sources such as the following: (1) natural-derived fiber-based nonwovens, such as pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, cotton, (2) natural fiber-based nonwovens, such as hemp, linen, seaweed, ramie, banana, pineapple, and (3) recycled or recyclable fiber-based nonwovens, such as cotton.

[0023] Many conventional cosmetic articles, such as wipes, are formed from fossil-based polymer materials such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate, or polyester) and PP (polypropylene), which can be used alone or in combination with natural-based materials. Such synthetic substrates are desirable because they are relatively inexpensive and produce and supply good tensile strength, however, they never essentially decompose, so they have an adverse impact on the environment. As the focus on sustainability in the cosmetics industry increases, there is a need for cosmetic articles that use solid substrates obtained from sources such as (1) natural-derived fiber-based nonwovens, such as pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, cotton, (2) natural fiber-based nonwovens, such as hemp, linen, seaweed, ramie, banana, pineapple, and (3) recycled or recyclable fiber-based nonwovens, such as cotton. As used herein, the term "natural-derived fiber" refers to a fiber material formed by a chemical treatment that results in a derivative based on a natural fiber; "natural fiber" means the non-derivative form of a natural fiber, and "recycled / recyclable" means a natural fiber recycled from an article formed of such fibers.

[0024] In some embodiments, the articles herein are formed from a substrate that is obtained from a sustainable source and is biodegradable. In some specific embodiments, these materials are selected from natural - derived fibers formed into non - woven fabrics that use fibers such as pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, and cotton. In one embodiment, the substrate used to form the cosmetic article is a non - woven fabric of lyocell. According to those embodiments that include fibers of natural biodegradability and sustainable origin, the obvious benefit realized is the opportunity to reduce the environmental burden. Other benefits may also be achieved using sustainable and biodegradable substrates. As further described herein, the exemplified articles using sustainable and biodegradable substrates, particularly lyocell non - woven fabrics, exhibit unexpected mechanical, texture, and absorption properties as well as significantly enhanced performance compared to competing cosmetic articles that use synthetic materials. Also, as described herein, the exemplified articles using sustainable and biodegradable substrates, particularly lyocell non - woven fabrics, exhibit enhanced performance compared to the compositions of this invention impregnated into synthetic substrates.

[0025] The articles according to the present disclosure are moist. It has the advantage of being comfortable during application to the skin and having a nourishing effect due to the presence of an oily phase. When it is used for the cleaning or removal of makeup from the skin, the article according to the present disclosure is spread over the skin and left applied for a time sufficient for the makeup product to dissolve into the impregnated composition of the article, and then the skin is wiped off. The skin may also optionally be rinsed thereafter. The article according to the present invention is preferably a suitable cosmetic article for caring for and / or treating the skin of the face, body, or hands and for cleaning or removing makeup from the skin of the face and / or body. It may also be used for hair care and the removal of makeup from the eyes.

[0026] An article according to the present disclosure may have any form suitable for a desired purpose. It may be single, multiple, folded or unfolded, and can generally constitute a wipe having a rectangular, square or other shape. The article may also be in the form of gloves, mittens or any other form suitable for practical use on the face or body, for example, a face shape with holes in the eye, nose and / or mouth areas, or in the form of a makeup-removing finger sack for application in the removal of makeup from the eyelashes, or in the form of a two-sided disc that may include one side or, in particular, two sides impregnated with different compositions. The article may also include a rough surface that allows for exfoliation (scrubbing) of the skin.

[0027] The terms “keratin matrix” and “keratinous tissue” include, but are not limited to, skin, hair, and nails, respectively.

[0028] “Cosmetically acceptable” means a carrier that is compatible with any keratin matrix.

[0029] The term “silicone-free” as used herein means, based on the total active weight of the composition, less than 5% by weight, such as less than 3% by weight, such as less than 1% by weight, of silicone, for example selected from silicone polymers (such as dimethicone and other silicone oils, and silicone elastomers).

[0030] According to the present disclosure, the inventive composition overcomes the drawbacks of the prior art and provides unexpected benefits including ease of overall makeup removal, easy foundation removal, making the skin feel clean, fresh, soft and smooth, easy non-scrubbing mascara removal (standard and waterproof), a satisfactory size and thickness of the substrate (wipe), not being overly dry, not being sticky, not leaving residue and having a pleasant aroma.

[0031] Based on the expert evaluation of the makeup removal efficacy, the composition according to the present disclosure showed significantly better performance in removing waterproof mascara and long-lasting foundation compared to currently commercially available makeup removal wipes, such as Neutrogena™ Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes and Garnier™ SkinActive Clean + Refreshing Remover Cleansing Towelettes (both formed using a synthetic fiber substrate impregnated with a cleansing composition).

[0032] In consumer research, the composition of the invention according to the present disclosure not only showed better performance in makeup removal efficacy, including improved performance in removing both foundation and mascara, but also provided a more pleasant experience to consumer testers, resulting in a relatively good skin feel after use. The inventive article formed using natural fibers showed similar enhanced performance compared to the comparative composition and compared to the same inventive composition impregnated into a synthetic fiber substrate. [0066] Substrate According to various embodiments, articles are provided that include a solid substrate impregnated with the makeup removing composition of the invention. The makeup removing and cleansing articles are formed from synthetic materials or from natural fibers of natural biodegradable and sustainable origin, natural fibers, or recycled or recycled natural fibers.

[0067] According to some embodiments, the substrate is a nonwoven material. An overview of nonwoven materials is provided in Riedel “Nonwoven Bonding Methods and Materials”, Nonwoven World (1987). These substrates are obtained by conventional methods of techniques for the preparation of nonwoven materials.

[0068] When the substrate is a non-woven material, a non-woven material can be used that is not ball-shaped, does not disintegrate upon application to the skin, and is sufficiently robust so as not to become woolly. It must be absorbent and not soft on at least one side, especially for removing makeup from the eyes. Suitable non-woven materials include, for example, those sold by BBA under the names Ultraloft 15285-01, Ultraloft 182-008, Ultraloft 182-010, and Ultraloft 182-016, those sold by Freudenberg under the names Vilmed M1519 Blau, Vilmed M1550N, and 112-132-3, those sold by Jacob Holm Industries under the name Norafin 11601-010B, the flocked non-woven materials sold by Uni Flockage under the names Univel109 and Univel119, and those made of viscose / PLA supplied by Sandler.

[0069] According to some embodiments including the article, a water-insoluble substrate is used. The water-insoluble substrate may comprise one or more layers, which can be selected from the group consisting of woven materials, non-woven materials, foams, sponges, waddings, as a sheet, ball, or film. In particular, it may be a non-woven substrate based on fibers of natural origin (linen, wool, cotton, silk, viscose, bamboo fibers) or synthetic origin (cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl derivatives, polyesters such as poly(ethylene terephthalate), polyolefins such as polyethylene (PET) or polypropylene, polyamides such as nylon, or acrylic derivatives) and mixtures thereof, such as viscose / PET, polylactic acid (PLA), or viscose / polylactic acid (viscose / PLA).

[0070] According to one embodiment, the substrate is a non-woven material composed of viscose or a non-woven material composed of a viscose / microviscose mixture by a hydroentanglement process.

[0071] In some specific embodiments, the makeup removing and cleansing article contains non-woven fibers, which are formed from natural biodegradable and sustainable origin fibers selected from the following: (1) natural origin fibers including one or a combination of pulp, viscose, lyocell, cellulose acetate, and cotton; (2) natural fibers including one or a combination of hemp, flax, seaweed, ramie, banana, and pineapple; and (3) regenerated or recycled fibers including cotton, and combinations thereof.

[0072] According to one embodiment, the substrate is a non-woven material formed from a biodegradable material, such as lyocell.

[0073] According to some embodiments, the substrate may include one or more layers having the same or different properties, such as properties of elasticity and softness and other properties suitable for the desired use. The substrate may include, for example, two parts having different elastic properties as described in document WO-A-99 / 13861, or a single layer having different densities as described in document WO-A-99 / 25318, or two layers having different textures as described in document WO-A-98 / 18441.

[0074] According to some embodiments, when the article is used for the body, the substrate may include at least one rough side for simultaneously massaging the skin or enabling scrubbing of the skin.

[0075] According to various embodiments, the substrate may have any size and any shape suitable for the desired purpose. Further, it generally has a surface area of 0.005 m 2 ~0.1 m 2 or 0.01 m 2 ~0.05 m 2 The weight of the substrate may range from 30 gsm to 200 gsm (grams per square meter), or from 40 gsm to 60 gsm.

[0076] According to various embodiments, the impregnation rate of the composition onto the substrate is generally in the range of 100% to 1000% of the weight of the substrate, in some embodiments about 150% to about 700%, or about 250% to about 400%. Techniques for impregnating the substrate with the composition are well known and all can be applied in the present invention. Generally, the impregnating composition is added to the substrate by one or more techniques including heating, dipping, coating, spraying, etc.

[0077] The following examples according to the present invention are provided by way of example and have no limiting nature. The names are chemical names or INCI names. Quantities are given as weight % therein unless otherwise noted.

[0078] Examples Example 1: Raw Materials [Table 1] TIFF2025081721000002.tif57165

[0079] Example 2: Invention Composition: Various representative embodiments of the compositions and articles of the invention are illustrated herein. In some cases, the composition is referred to as "juice". The invention composition in juice form (not impregnated into the substrate) is designated by an identification number (e.g., "Invention Composition 1" or "INV 1"); the invention composition in article form (impregnated into the substrate) is designated by an alphanumeric identifier (e.g., "Invention Composition 1A" or "INV 1A" (juice impregnated into biodegradable lyocell nonwoven fabric); "Invention Composition 1B" or "INV 1B" (juice impregnated into synthetic nonwoven substrate)). [Table 2] TIFF2025081721000004.tif182165

[0080] Example 3: Preparation Procedure of the Invention: Preparation of the juice formulation: 1. Prepare Phase A by gradually adding the polymer thickener to water at room temperature and mixing well using an overhead propeller mixer with a Cowles blade (20 - 30 minutes at 500 - 800 rpm) until there are no lumps or gels and it is uniform. 2. Prepare Phase B (aqueous phase) by mixing the Component B using a stir bar and heating to 55 - 60 °C until all solids are dissolved and a turbid but uniform and colorless liquid is obtained. Stop heating. 3. Add B to A and mix well. 4. Prepare the pH adjuster (Phase C) by mixing sodium hydroxide in water and add it to AB. Mix well. 5. Add D (oil phase), E (surfactant), and F (fragrance) to ABC (800 rpm) either one component at a time or premixed in a beaker and add. 6. Mix well at room temperature and drop the batch. Take specifications (pH, viscosity).

[0081] Preparation of the makeup removal wipe: Immerse the selected non - woven substrate uniformly in the juice formulation in a weight percent ratio pattern of 1:4 (substrate: juice formulation). Fold the wet substrate into the desired shape, stack the folded wet wipes, and pack them in a suitable package for ease of use.

Table 5

[0083] Example 5: Expert evaluation: Proof of the effectiveness of the inventive composition versus the comparative composition in removing stubborn makeup and mascara The study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the inventive compositions compared to commercially available makeup removing wet wipes (comparative compositions) having generally similar components infused within a solid substrate. In the study, wipe substrates impregnated with the juice compositions were used by trained / licensed estheticians to remove heavy face makeup (Maybelline™ Super Stay Full Coverage Foundation), and mascara (Maybelline™ Colossal Big Shot Waterproof Mascara). Cleansing wipes were prepared by immersing a liquid cleaning composition onto the wipe substrate at a specific weight percentage ratio, typically 4:1 (juice:substrate). Makeup removal efficacy was determined by following a protocol where an esthetician applied stubborn makeup products to six (6) Caucasian women. After 30 minutes, the esthetician removed the makeup using the test products (invention and comparative), and the degree of removal was evaluated by the amount of residual makeup removed by using 2 mL of Lancôme™ Bi-Facil™ Makeup Remover (a two-phase makeup removal product) on one cotton pad for up to six cotton pads. The higher the makeup removal efficacy of the test formulation, the fewer cotton pads with Bi-Facil™ are needed for removal because there is less residual makeup. Makeup removal efficacy data was plotted using a 2D graph and is shown as Figure 1; the data shown in Figure 1 is presented in Table 6.

Table 6

[0084] Both of the inventive compositions tested were more efficient in foundation and mascara removal compared to each of the comparative compositions, and both inventive compositions provided aesthetically acceptable results.

[0085] Example 6: Proof of the effectiveness of the inventive composition versus Comparative Composition 1 (Neutrogena™) in the removal of makeup and mascara selected by consumers; In-home user evaluation The study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a representative inventive composition provided as an infused wipe article compared to a comparative composition (Comparative 1) commercially available as a makeup removal wipe.

[0086] Consumers meeting the following criteria entered into a contract to participate in the study: Women aged 18 - 55; Wear foundation (stubborn or standard) and mascara (waterproof or standard) more than 3 days per week; Use Neutrogena™ Ultra Soft Makeup Removing Wipes (blue pack) at least once a week.

[0087] Example 6A: Proof of the effectiveness of the inventive composition versus Comparative Composition 1 (Neutrogena™) in the removal of makeup and mascara selected by consumers; In-home user evaluation Three groups of participants (60 women per group) used a test product selected from Inventive Ex1B, Inventive Ex2B, or Comparative 1 over a one-week period and participated in an online survey after one week of use. Results showing generally comparable or superior performance of the inventive compositions are presented in Table 7.

Table 7

[0088] Example 6B: Proof of the effectiveness of the inventive composition on different substrates versus Comparative Composition 1 (Neutrogena™) in the removal of makeup and mascara selected by consumers; In-home user evaluation Three groups of participants used test products selected from 62 participants / subjects for Invention Ex1A (lyocell substrate) - 62 participants / subjects, 61 participants / subjects for Invention Ex1B (PET / viscose / PP substrate), or 54 participants / subjects for Comparison 1 over a three-week period and participated in an online survey after the first week of use. Results showing generally comparable or superior performance to the compositions of the invention are shown in Table 8. Surprisingly, Invention Ex1A (lyocell substrate) showed better makeup removal efficacy and better skin feel than Invention Ex1B (PET / viscose / PP substrate), indicating excellent performance when using the lyocell substrate.

[0089] Although the present disclosure has been described with reference to preferred embodiments, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes can be made without departing from the scope of the present disclosure and equivalents can be substituted for its elements. In addition, many modifications may be possible to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the present disclosure without departing from its essential scope. Therefore, the present disclosure is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed as the best mode contemplated for carrying out this disclosure, and the present disclosure is intended to include all embodiments included within the scope of the appended claims.

[0090] As used herein, the article "a" or "an" when applied to any feature in the embodiments of the present disclosure described in the specification and claims means one or more. The use of "a" or "an" does not limit the meaning to a single feature unless such a limitation is specifically stated. The article "the" preceding a singular or plural noun or noun phrase indicates one or more specifically identified features and may have a singular or plural meaning depending on the context in which it is used. The adjective "any" means any amount, indiscriminately one, some, or all.

[0091] "At least one" as used herein means one or more and thus includes individual components as well as mixtures / combinations.

[0092] The transitional terms "comprising", "consisting essentially of", and "consisting of" are used in the appended claims, in their original and amended forms, to define the claims with respect to whether any additional claim elements or steps (if any) not recited are excluded from the claim(s). The term "comprising" is intended to be inclusive or open-ended and does not exclude any additional, unrecited elements, method, steps, or materials. The term "consisting of" excludes all elements, steps, or materials other than those specified in the claim, and in the latter case, impurities are typically associated with the specified material(s). The term "consisting essentially of" limits the claim to the specified element(s), step(s), or material(s), as well as those that do not substantially affect the basic and novel characteristics of the claimed disclosure. All materials and methods described herein that embody the present disclosure may, in other embodiments, be more particularly defined by any of the transitional terms "comprising", "consisting essentially of", and "consisting of".

[0093] The terms "free of" and "lacking" indicate that the excluded material that can be reliably measured is not present in the composition, typically 0 weight % based on the total weight of the composition. The term "essentially free of" means that it is preferred that the excluded material is not present in the composition, but it is possible that a very small amount of the excluded material is present in the inventive composition, provided that these amounts do not substantially affect the advantageous properties of the composition. In particular, "essentially free of" means that the excluded material may be present in the composition in an amount of less than about 0.1 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

[0094] In the case of operating examples, or unless otherwise instructed, all numerical values representing the amounts of material components and / or reaction conditions should be understood to be modified by the term "about" in all cases, meaning within 10% of the indicated numerical value (e.g., "about 10%" means 9% - 11%, and "about 2%" means 1.8% - 2.2%).

[0095] All percentages and ratios are calculated by weight unless otherwise noted. All percentages are calculated based on the total composition unless otherwise noted. Generally, unless explicitly stated otherwise herein, the "weight" or "amount" used herein with respect to the percentage amount of a material component refers to the amount of the raw material containing the material component, and the raw material can be described herein as containing less than 100% and up to 100% of the activity of the material component. Thus, the weight percentage of the active substance in the composition is represented as the amount of the raw material containing the active substance used, and may or may not reflect the final percentage of the active substance, and the final percentage of the active substance depends on the weight percentage of the active substance in the raw material.

[0096] All ranges and amounts given herein are intended to include sub - ranges and amounts that use any of the disclosed points as endpoints. Thus, a range of "1% - 10%, for example 2% - 8%, for example 3% - 5%" is intended to encompass ranges such as "1% - 8%", "1% - 5%", "2% - 10%", etc. All numerical values, amounts, ranges, etc. are intended to be modified by the term "about" whether or not so explicitly stated. Similarly, a given range of "about 1% - 10%" is intended to have the term "about" modifying both endpoints of 1% and 10%. Further, when the amount of a component is given, it is understood that, unless specifically stated otherwise, it is intended to represent the amount of the active material.

[0097] Numerical ranges and parameters setting forth the broad scope of the present disclosure are approximations, and unless otherwise indicated, the numerical values set forth in the specific examples are reported as accurately as possible. However, any numerical value inherently contains a certain error necessarily resulting from the standard deviation found in their respective test measurements. The following examples function to illustrate embodiments of the present disclosure, but are not restrictive in nature.

[0098] All publications and patent applications cited in this specification are hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes as if each individual publication or patent application was specifically and individually indicated to be incorporated by reference. In case of conflict between this disclosure and any incorporated publication or patent application by reference, this disclosure shall govern.
