Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to zipper closures for soft-shell luggage, hard-shell luggage, and various shapes and sizes of other bags. Examples of other bags include backpacks, briefcases, suitcases, tote bags, pocket books, wallets, messenger bags, duffel bags, sports equipment bags, and the like.
Background Art
[0002] Luggage items, particularly luggage cases (suitcases), often include zippers for various purposes, including compensatory opening and closing of luggage shells and, among other uses, opening and closing of pockets. In some bags, the zipper pull tab of the zipper may be fixed by a locking mechanism attached to the luggage case to prevent unauthorized access. When the zipper has multiple zipper pull tabs such that each of the two zipper sliders has one zipper pull tab, the zipper pull tabs may need to be positioned relative to each other in a specific manner, such as being interlocked so as to be received within the locking mechanism. This relative positioning, or interlocking, of the zipper pull tabs can be difficult to achieve for many reasons, such as when task lighting is insufficient or when the zipper pull tabs must engage with each other in a specific way such that one is received within or inserted into a part of another zipper pull tab. Further, the user may not have the dexterity required to operate the zipper pull tabs in the proper interengagement direction for receiving them within the locking mechanism.
[0003] Documents that may be related to the present disclosure include Patent Document 1, Patent Document 2, Patent Document 3, Patent Document 4, Patent Document 5, Patent Document 6, Patent Document 7, Patent Document 8, and Patent Document 9.
[0004] Patent Document 3 discloses means for operably linking a first zipper slider to either a second zipper slider or an end of a zipper closer. The zipper handle is magnetized to be held in a predetermined position, which is a position that tends to indicate to a thief to pull the handle in a certain direction without opening the zip closure system.
[0005] Patent Document 8 discloses a magnetic zipper having a female magnetic pull tab and male magnetic pull tabs that are aligned with each other. The male pull tabs have a magnetic function, protrusions on the front side, and are aligned in a straight line with the magnetic function. There is a cavity on the back side of the female pull tab to fix the two pull tabs to each other.
[0006] Patent Document 6 discloses a pull tab having a cross beam that extends perpendicular to the zipper when the pull tab extends in the direction of the zipper. Each end of the cross beam includes a magnet that is attracted to a magnet within a lining cross near the end of the zipper.
[0007] Patent Document 5 discloses a zipper having two sliders, and each slider has a pull tab that is magnetically attracted to the other pull tab so that the pull tabs do not separate.
[0008] Patent Document 7 discloses a zipper having a first slider including a permanent magnet and a second slider including a reed switch. The reed switch transmits a prompt message when the first slider and the second slider are separated from each other.
[0009] Patent Document 9 discloses a zipper pull tab that is magnetically held against a magnet attached under the lower stopper of the zipper. The figure shows that the pull tab is aligned with the direction of the zipper when the pull tab is magnetically held against the magnet.
[0010] Patent Document 4 discloses a releasable closure mechanism that uses an encapsulated magnetic composition containing a smart fluid or a printable composition with magnetic particles dispersed on one side of an opening and a similar magnetic composition on the opposite side. These two magnetic regions attract each other to releasably close the opening. According to one embodiment, the support substrate has a predetermined pattern of printed magnet segments and a complementary support substrate having a predetermined pattern of printed magnet segments. The first support substrate may be directly fixed to the edge of the closable object or attached to another structure such as a zipper tape that is directly attached to the edge of the closable object.
[0011] Patent Document 1 discloses a zipper with two sliders, each slider having a pull tab connected thereto. The pull tab engages with a lock on a luggage product.
[0012] Patent Document 2 discloses a zipper with two sliders each having a pull tab. The pull tabs can be interlocked with each other by a slide-and-turn operation that rotates one pull tab relative to the other about an axis extending in the longitudinal direction of the zipper.

In some embodiments, the raised portion is inclined and has a sufficient height such that an object sliding along the outer surface of the luggage product must slide towards the raised portion, thereby preventing the object from causing one or more of the zipper pull tabs to disengage from magnetic engagement with the platform. Similarly, the raised portion is dimensioned and configured to prevent the zipper pull tab from sliding up and down over the perimeter of the platform over the raised portion.
[0100] In various embodiments, the platform is configured to support at least one zipper pull tab. In some embodiments, the platform is configured to support at least two zipper pull tabs. In some embodiments, the platform is configured to support zipper pull tabs from a plurality of zippered openings. For example, a single platform may be configured to support four zipper pull tabs including two zipper pull tabs from a first zippered opening and two zipper pull tabs from a second zippered opening.
[0101] Each zipper pull tab can be held against the outer surface of the platform by means for holding the zipper pull tab substantially perpendicular to the zipper tape of the zipper device. In an embodiment, this means for holding the zipper pull tab is magnetic. In some embodiments, the means for holding the zipper pull tab is the magnetic force from at least one magnet of the platform. In some embodiments, the means for holding the pull tab is the magnetic force from at least one magnet of the platform and at least one magnet of the zipper pull tab.
[0102] Figure 3 shows an embodiment of the platform of Figure 2. In the platform of Figure 3, platform magnets 32, 34 are coupled to the platform 26. In some embodiments, the platform magnets are positioned adjacent to the inner surface of the platform 26 that faces the outer surface 24 of the platform 26. In particular, Figure 3 shows a first platform magnet 32 and a second platform magnet 34 fixed to the inner surface 36 of the platform 26. Each platform magnet 32, 34 may be fixed to the inner surface 36 of the platform 24 by an adhesive, magnetic force, or other fixing means used in the art.
[0103] Figure 4 is a perspective view of the interior of the backpack of Figure 1. In the backpack 10, the platform magnets 32, 34 can be disposed between the inner surface 36 of the platform 26 and the lining 38 of the backpack. With this arrangement, the platform magnets 32, 34 are separated from the interior pocket of the backpack 10 by the lining 38.
[0104] Each platform magnet 32, 34 is oriented and configured to magnetically hold each of the zipper pull tabs 18, 22 of the zipper pull tabs against the outer surface 24 of the platform 26. As will be described in more detail herein, the first platform magnet 32 is configured to magnetically attract the first zipper pull tab 18 to a first position on the platform 26, and the second platform magnet 34 is configured to magnetically attract the second zipper pull tab 22 to a second position on the platform 26. As an example, as shown in FIG. 3, the first platform magnet 32 has an N pole facing in the same direction as the outer platform surface 24 and an S pole facing in a direction away from the outer platform surface 24 and toward the interior of the backpack 10. The second platform magnet 34 has an S pole facing in the same direction as the outer platform surface 24 and an N pole facing in a direction away from the outer platform surface 24 and toward the interior of the backpack 10.
[0105] In some embodiments, each zipper pull tab 18, 22 includes a respective zipper magnet to facilitate magnetic attraction between the zipper pull tabs 18, 22 and the platform 26 and to facilitate proper positioning of the zipper pull tabs 18, 22 on the platform 26.
[0106] Figures 5-8 illustrate the components of a zipper pull tab assembly and the steps of assembling a zipper pull tab according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 5 shows the back portion of a zipper pull tab frame 50, and FIG. 6 shows the front portion of the zipper pull tab frame. In some embodiments, the zipper pull tab frame 50 is formed of metal. In some embodiments, the zipper pull tab frame 50 is formed of another material. The zipper pull tab frame 50 includes a longitudinally extending frame portion 52 and a laterally extending frame portion 54. The zipper pull tab frame 50 can be integrally formed, for example, by casting or machining the zipper pull tab frame 50 from a single workpiece. In some embodiments, the zipper pull tab frame 50 may be formed, for example, by welding two or more frame portions together, by joining two or more frame portions such as a front portion and a rear portion together.
[0107] As shown in FIG. 6, the laterally extending frame portion 54 of the front portion of the zipper pull tab frame 50 includes a surface 56 configured to receive and support a zipper magnet 58. The zipper magnet 58 can be coupled to the surface 56 of the zipper pull tab frame 50, for example, by an adhesive, by friction fitting, or by another method of fixing the magnet to a first planar surface. Referring to FIG. 7, the zipper magnet 58 is shown in a state fixed to the surface 56 of the zipper pull tab frame 50.
[0108] Referring to FIG. 8, an embodiment of a fully assembled zipper pull tab is shown. In particular, the zipper magnet 58 is surrounded within a zipper pull tab body generally indicated at 60 by a gripping surface 62 that extends over the zipper magnet 58 and at least a portion of the zipper pull tab frame 50. In some embodiments, the gripping surface 62 is an overmolding. In some embodiments, the gripping surface includes rubber or another material that can be easily gripped by individual fingers. In some embodiments, the rubber is embossed. In the embodiment of FIG. 8, the zipper pull tab frame 50 is a smooth metal surface and the gripping surface 62 is overmolded rubber. The overmolding includes a textured surface 64 to make it easier for an individual to grip the overmolding 62 of the zipper pull tab with each individual finger.
[0109] Thus, in one embodiment, a zipper magnet is included within a zipper pull tab body. The zipper pull tab body includes a zipper pull tab frame portion. The zipper pull tab body has a grip surface that covers the zipper magnet and a portion of the zipper pull tab frame. In some embodiments, the gripping surface is an embossed rubber material fixed to the zipper pull tab frame portion.
[0110] In some embodiments, the magnetic field of the zipper magnet 58 in each zipper pull tab is oriented such that when the zipper pull tab is magnetically held against the outer surface of the platform, the magnetic field aligns the zipper pull tabs so that the platform holds each zipper pull tab perpendicular to the zipper tape. In one embodiment, the length L of the zipper pull tab is oriented along the length of the platform, and when the zipper pull tab is magnetically held against the outer surface 24 of the platform, the width dimension W of the zipper pull tab is oriented along the width of the platform. In some embodiments, the length L dimension of each zipper pull tab is oriented substantially perpendicular to the zipper tape. In some embodiments, the length L dimension of each zipper pull tab is oriented perpendicular to the zipper tape.
[0111] In the embodiment of FIG. 1, each zipper pull tab 18, 22 has a zipper pull tab magnet, and the zipper pull tab magnets are oriented in opposite directions so as to mate with the respective platform magnets within the platform. As a result, the zipper pull tabs are magnetically held relative to the platform by the respective zipper magnets and platform magnets.
[0112] Here, the operation of the magnets for facilitating the specific orientation of the zipper pull tabs 18, 22 on the platform 26 will be described. The positioning of each zipper pull tab at a specific location on the platform can be achieved by having opposite polarities of the platform magnets and opposite polarities of the zipper pull tabs. For example, the first platform magnet has a north polarity facing in the same direction as the outer platform surface. The second platform magnet has an S pole facing in the same direction as the outer platform surface. The first zipper pull tab is configured to seat at a location near the first platform magnet. The first zipper pull tab has a zipper magnet with an S pole facing the N pole of the first platform magnet, and the first zipper pull tab can seat at a location near the first platform magnet and be aligned longitudinally. The second zipper pull tab is configured to seat at a location near the second platform magnet. The second zipper pull tab has a zipper magnet with an N pole facing the S pole of the second platform magnet, and the second zipper pull tab seats at a location near the second platform magnet and is aligned longitudinally.
[0113] With this device, the platform has a first position on the outer platform surface near the first platform magnet. The first position is configured to support the first zipper pull tab. Also, the platform has a second position on the outer platform surface near the second platform magnet. The second position is configured to support the second zipper pull tab.
[0114] With this configuration, when the user pulls the first zipper pull tab towards the platform and rotates the zipper pull tab towards the platform, the magnetic force between the first platform magnet and the first zipper magnet acts to pull the first zipper pull tab to the position where it is seated at the first position on the platform. In this way, the first zipper pull tab is magnetically held near the first platform magnet. Similarly, when the user attempts to place the first zipper pull tab at the second position, the second platform magnet acts to repel the first zipper pull tab. Similarly, the second zipper pull tab is magnetically held near the second platform magnet.
[0115] In the illustrated embodiment, the distance between the platform magnets under the platform magnet is such that when one of the zipper pull tabs is seated on the platform, there is room for the other zipper pull tab to subsequently be seated on the platform, so the zipper device is in a closed state. In particular, with the first zipper pull tab mounted at the first position on the workbench, the user pulls the second zipper pull tab towards the workbench and rotates the second zipper pull tab towards the workbench. The magnetic force between the second platform magnet and the second zipper magnet acts to pull the second zipper pull tab to the second position on the platform close to the first zipper pull tab on the platform so as to substantially close the zippered pocket.
[0116] The order in which the user engages the first zipper pull tab and the second zipper pull tab with the platform is not important. It can be reversed. Similar to the first zipper pull tab and the second platform magnet, the first platform magnet is configured to act to repel the second zipper pull tab from seating at the first position on the platform.
[0117] In some embodiments, the means for holding each zipper pull tab in a position substantially perpendicular to the zipper tape includes magnetic means and / or other means. In some embodiments, the magnetic means relies on the magnetic force from a permanent magnet, a non-permanent magnet, and / or an electromagnet. In some embodiments, each zipper pull tab can be engaged and held against the outer surface of the platform by the magnetic force of the positioning magnet of the platform and the zipper magnet of the zipper pull tab.
[0118] In some embodiments, each zipper pull tab is magnetically attracted to a specific position on the platform.
[0119] FIG. 9 shows a front view of an embodiment of the backpack 10 of FIG. 1. As shown, the platform 26 is disposed on the side surface of the backpack 10, whereby it does not get in the way and is not easily visible from the front view of the bag. The first zipper pull tab 18 and the second zipper pull tab 22 are magnetically held against the surface 24 of the platform 26, such that the first zipper pull tab 18 and the second zipper pull tab 22 do not hang freely from the side surface of the backpack 10. One advantage of the zipper pull tab holding device is understood to be that it can hold the zipper pull tab against the surface of the bag and hold it in a non-obtrusive manner as seen in this front view.
[0120] In some embodiments, the platform and at least one zipper pull tab according to the present disclosure may be provided separately from the luggage product. The platform and the zipper pull tab can then be fixed to the luggage product. In some embodiments, the present disclosure provides a luggage product incorporating the platform and at least one zipper pull tab according to the present disclosure.
[0121] In some embodiments, the zipper device includes at least two zipper sliders and at least two zipper pull tabs, and each of the at least two zipper sliders is coupled to one of each of the at least two zipper pull tabs.
[0122] Each zipper pull tab can be magnetically fixed to a mating magnetic platform on the outer surface of the luggage product. In some embodiments, when the zipper pull tab is magnetically held against the platform, the zipper pull tab extends perpendicular to the direction of the zipper tape.
[0123] When the zipper device includes only one zipper pull tab and the platform is located at the end of the zipper tape, the platform is configured to firmly hold the zipper pull tab, so the zipper device is in a closed state. When the zipper device includes two zipper pull tabs, the platform is configured to firmly hold the zipper pull tabs on the platform, so the zipper device is in a closed state. Through a quick visual inspection of the workbench, an individual can determine whether the zipper device is in a closed state.
[0124] In some embodiments where the zipper device includes two zipper pull tabs, the first zipper pull tab is magnetically attracted to a first position on the platform and magnetically repelled from a second position on the platform based on the magnetic polarity of the platform magnet. In some embodiments, the second zipper pull tab is magnetically repelled from the first position on the platform and magnetically attracted to the second position on the platform. In this way, the user can move each zipper pull tab close enough to the platform such that the magnetic fields of the respective magnets within the platform and the respective magnets within the zipper pull tab act to properly seat each zipper pull tab. By each zipper pull tab being properly seated, each zipper pull tab is magnetically held in either the first position on the platform or the second position on the platform, or a predetermined position of its respective zipper pull tab.
[0125] The platform and zipper pull tabs of the present disclosure can be applied to various luggage products having one or more openings secured by zippers. For example, the platform and zipper pull tabs can be applied to luggage products in the form of a suitcase, backpack, handbag, messenger bag, duffel bag, sports equipment bag, briefcase, business case, laptop case, or similar cases having an opening secured by a zipper. In some embodiments, the luggage product includes wheels. For example, in some embodiments, the luggage product is a suitcase having wheels.
[0126] The luggage product can include a body having a soft shell, a hard shell, or a combination of a hard shell portion and a soft shell portion. The luggage product can include a body having one of various shapes. For example, in some embodiments, the body of the luggage product has a cubic shape, a rectangular solid shape, a curved shape, or another shape.
[0127] The luggage product includes an outer surface. At least one internal portion is accessible via a zippered opening. In some embodiments, at least one inner portion includes an inner lining.
[0128] In another aspect of the present disclosure, a method of assembling the above-described luggage product is provided. Some embodiments of the method include providing a body having an outer surface, the body including a zippered opening having at least one zipper device having a zipper tape. The zipper device includes at least two zipper sliders and at least two zipper pull tabs. Each of the at least two zipper sliders is coupled to one of each of the at least two zipper pull tabs. The at least two zipper pull tabs include a first zipper pull tab and a second zipper pull tab. Some embodiments of the method further include providing means for holding the at least two zipper pull tabs in an arrangement substantially perpendicular to the zipper tape of the zipper device.
[0129] Embodiments of the disclosed platform and zipper pull tabs provide several advantages over the prior art. For example, the magnetic engagement between the platform and the zipper pull tabs facilitates a particular alignment of the zipper pull tabs on the luggage product. With this arrangement, a user can easily align at least one zipper pull tab so that it extends perpendicular to the zipper tape of the zippered opening. In some embodiments, a user can align two zipper pull tabs so that they extend perpendicular to the zipper tape of the zippered opening. This configuration allows the user to hold the two zipper pull tabs side by side in an aligned array and substantially perpendicular to the zipper tape on the luggage product when the zipper pull tabs are not in use. An advantage of such an arrangement is that the zipper pull tabs are easy to use and are held in a fixed position away from the midpoint. Another advantage of this arrangement is that it can be used with non-metallic zipper tapes since there is no magnetic attraction between the zipper pull tabs and the metal teeth of the zipper tape.
[0130] In some embodiments, the user can leave one of the zipper pull tabs aligned perpendicular to the zipper tape, while the user can move the other zipper pull tab to the open position, so that the user can access the interior of the luggage product. If the user wants to open the zippered opening wider, the user can move both zipper pull tabs away from the platform and move the zipper pull tabs along the zippered opening to fully open the zippered opening. When the user is ready to close the zippered opening of the luggage product, the user can align the zipper pull tabs on the platform. In some embodiments, the magnets on the platform and the zipper pull tabs are configured such that each zipper pull tab itself seats correctly in the appropriate position on the platform, leaving room for the other zipper pull tab to seat itself on the platform without the need to reposition the first zipper pull tab on the platform.
[0131] The platform and zipper pull tabs of the present disclosure enhance the security of the zippered opening. Since the zipper pull tabs are held in a magnetic engagement with the platform, the zipper pull tabs are more likely to hold the zippered opening in the closed position when an opening force is applied to the panel of the luggage product. Security is thus improved without the need for a lock. Individuals with limited finger dexterity may find it difficult to open locks such as Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-approved locks or other luggage locks. In some embodiments, the magnetic force holding the zipper pull tab to the platform is configured such that a person with limited finger dexterity can easily remove the zipper pull tab from the platform.
[0132] In addition, the platform and zipper pull tab of the present disclosure provide individual advantages where visibility is limited. Individuals with limited visibility can discover that it is difficult to insert a portion of the zipper pull tab into the lock slot. The platform and zipper pull tab of the present disclosure enable individuals with limited vision to easily align the zipper pull tab in a secure position on the platform. The user can easily position the platform adjacent to the zippered opening, particularly in embodiments where the platform has a raised portion along its perimeter. When an individual moves the zipper pull tab near the platform, the magnetic force aligns the zipper pull tab in an orientation adjacent to the platform. When an individual wants to open the zippered opening, the individual does not need to enter a lock code. Before opening the zippered opening, there is no need to check and press the position of individual small buttons.
[0133] The platform and zipper pull tab of the present disclosure provide a zippered opening that can include multiple zipper pull tabs while improving the aesthetic appearance of the luggage, and a cleaning device for the zipper pull tabs.
[0134] As described above, the zip puller device of the present disclosure provides various advantages such as making it easier for the user to find the zip pull tab, keeping the zip pull tab out of the way, and preventing (or at least limiting) the zip pull tab from swinging and potentially damaging the bag and other objects during use. The zip puller device of the present disclosure assists in holding the pull tab. In addition, the platform provides a reinforced location on the bag so that the pull tab does not cause damage. Also, by holding the pull tab perpendicular to the zipper tape, it becomes easier for the user to grip the pull tab and the zip pull tab does not damage the zip tape.
[0135] According to one aspect of the present disclosure, an improved luggage product as described in the appended claims is provided.
