Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a laundry fragrance formulation. In particular, the present invention relates to a laundry fragrance formulation comprising water, a solid carrier, a structuring agent and a fragrance additive, the laundry fragrance formulation being in a solid form.
[0002] For decades, consumers have been demanding to provide fragrance to laundry during the washing process. Currently, many scented fabric softeners are available to consumers. Such products typically combine fragrance with softeners and conditioning agents to provide laundry with benefits such as fresh smell, softness, no static electricity, no wrinkles, or easy ironing. Some consumers want more fragrance benefits. These consumers are called scent seekers and are known to over-inject laundry products, such as laundry detergents and fabric softeners, to provide laundry with the desired freshness. There is still a need to provide consumers with fragrance delivery products that provide laundry with enhanced freshness. Such fragrance compositions should be able to be used by consumers independently of other laundry products, so that the laundry fragrance level desired by each consumer can be obtained in a cost-effective manner.
[0003] A laundry scent additive is disclosed by Aouad in U.S. Patent No. 9,453,189, which allows the consumer to control the amount of scent imparted to laundry. Aouad discloses a composition comprising a plurality of pastilles, the pastilles comprising (a) polyethylene glycol and (b) friable fragrance microcapsules, the fragrance microcapsules comprising an encapsulated fragrance, each of the pastilles having a mass of about 0.95 mg to about 2 g, and each of the pastilles having a hemispherical or compressed hemispherical shape.
[0004] Nevertheless, there remains a need for new laundry fragrance additives. In particular, it would be desirable to replace a portion of the solid carrier in fragrance additives with water to reduce the cost of conventional laundry fragrance compositions while retaining the structural and fragrance delivery properties associated with such systems.
[0005] The present invention provides a laundry fragrance formulation comprising 5-40% by weight of water, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance formulation, 35-93.95% by weight of a solid carrier, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance formulation, 0.05-5% by weight of a structuring agent, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance formulation, and 1-25% by weight of a fragrance additive, based on the weight of the laundry fragrance formulation, wherein the laundry fragrance formulation is a solid.

[0011] The present invention provides a method for scenting laundry comprising the steps of: loading a laundry scenting formulation of the present invention into a washing machine or laundry basin; adding fabric articles to the washing machine or laundry basin; loading water into the washing machine or laundry basin; and applying the water and the laundry scenting formulation to the fabric articles, wherein the scent additive comprises a perfume applied to the fabric articles. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0012] Surprisingly, it has been found that the addition of a structurant can replace a portion of the solid carrier used in laundry fragrance formulations with water while maintaining the Shore A hardness of the composition and maintaining (or improving) the delivery of perfume to the laundry.
[0013] Unless otherwise indicated, ratios, percentages, parts, etc. are by weight. Weight percentages (or wt%) in a composition are percentages of dry weight, i.e., excluding any water that may be present in the composition. Percentages of monomer units in a polymer are percentages of solids weight, i.e., excluding any water present in a polymer emulsion.
[0014] As used herein, unless otherwise indicated, the terms "weight average molecular weight" and "Mw" are used interchangeably to refer to weight average molecular weight when measured in a conventional manner using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and conventional standards such as polystyrene standards. The technique of GPC is discussed in detail in Modem Size Exclusion Chromatography, WW Yau, JJ Kirkland, DDBly; Wiley-Interscience, 1979, and A Guide to Materials Characterization and Chemical Analysis, JP Sibilia; VCH, 1988, p.81-84. Weight average molecular weight is reported herein in units of Daltons.
[0015] The term "solid / solid" in relation to the laundry fragrance composition of the present invention means that when the laundry fragrance composition is placed on a rigid surface and left undisturbed for 24 hours in air at 22°C, 30-50% relative humidity and 101.4 kPa pressure, the laundry fragrance composition does not appreciably change shape.

[0068] Some embodiments of the present invention will now be described in detail in the following examples.
[0069] Example S1: Polymer synthesis Deionized water (729 g) and sodium lauryl sulfate (2 g) are added to a 3 liter, 4-neck round bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, thermocouple, condenser, and nitrogen sparge. The reactor is purged with nitrogen and warmed to 90° C. Separately, (1) a monomer emulsion (A) is prepared by dissolving deionized water (556 g), sodium lauryl sulfate (25 g), ethyl acrylate (EA) (448 g), methacrylic acid (MAA) (151 gm), and a monomer emulsion of the following structure:
[0070] [ka] (In the formula, R 1 is a linear saturated C 16-18 (2) A lipophilic modified monomer (LIPO) having an alkyl group (n is an alkyl group, n is 15-19 on average) is prepared (7 g). (2) A monomer emulsion additive (B) is prepared by mixing trimethylolpropane diallyl ether (TMPDAE) (1.12 g) with MAA (93 g). (3) An initiator solution C1 is prepared by dissolving ammonium persulfate (0.4 g) in deionized water (19 g). (4) An initiator solution C2 is prepared by dissolving ammonium persulfate (0.7 g) in deionized water (42 g). With the reactor temperature at about 90°C, the initiator solution C1 is charged to the reactor. Then, the monomer emulsion (A) is charged to the reactor while simultaneously charging the monomer emulsion additive (B) to the monomer emulsion (A). The rates are controlled so that both feeds are finished in 120 minutes. Separately, the initiator solution C2 is fed to the reactor in 120 minutes. After these additions are complete, the monomer emulsion and initiator feed lines are rinsed with deionized water, followed by chasing the monomers with the free radical catalyst and activator. The resulting latex is recovered and the pH is adjusted to 7 with sodium hydroxide.
[0071] Comparative Examples C1-C4 and Examples 1-4: Laundry scent formulations The solid laundry scent formulations of Comparative Examples C1-C4 and Examples 1-4 were prepared using the amounts of ingredients listed in Table 1 using the following procedure: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to a flask and heated to 80°C to melt. The additives were then added slowly to the molten PEG while stirring. The flask contents were then cooled to 65°C and the fragrance was then added to the flask contents while stirring. The flask contents were then poured onto a smooth metal surface at room temperature to obtain the product of the solid laundry scent formulation in the form of solid flakes.
[0072] [Table 1]
[0073] hardness The indentation hardness of the solid laundry scent formulations prepared according to Comparative Examples C1-C4 and Examples 1-4 was measured according to ASTM D 2240 using a durometer from Shore Instrument and Manufacturing Co. The average Shore A hardness of five separate measurements for each solid laundry scent formulation is shown in Table 2.
