Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a two-wheeled vehicle, and more particularly to the mounting of a lean angle sensor on a two-wheeled vehicle. [Background technology]

[0002] Two-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles are usually provided with a lean angle sensor that detects the vehicle's lean angle value in real time. The lean angle is the angle at which the vehicle is leaned in a corner or during a turn. For vehicles that do not have any means of detecting the lean angle value, if the vehicle leans too much or during a high-side condition, the vehicle's lying orientation may cause various problems such as adversely affecting the vehicle's engine, the rider's safety, and fuel leakage from the vehicle's fuel tank. In vehicles with a lean angle sensor, the lean angle sensor detects the vehicle's lean angle value, which is displayed to the rider. Displaying the lean angle value to the rider helps the rider evaluate his / her riding performance and avoid events such as vehicle rollover.

[0003] In vehicles equipped with a lean angle sensor, the lean angle sensor is located away from the center of gravity of the vehicle. Furthermore, the lean angle sensor detects only the lean of the vehicle. The lean is the rotation about the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. The calculation of the lean angle value based only on the lean of the vehicle is not always accurate when the lean angle sensor is located away from the center of gravity of the vehicle. For example, during uphill or downhill conditions, the calculation of the lean angle must also include the yaw and / or pitch of the vehicle. Yaw is the rotation of the vehicle about the vertical axis. Pitch is the rotation of the vehicle about the transverse axis. However, without the detection of the yaw and / or pitch of the vehicle by the lean angle sensor, the calculation of the lean angle value is not accurate. The inaccuracy of the lean angle value displayed to the rider in various terrains provides false assurance to the rider, which also concerns the rider's safety.

[0004] To overcome the aforementioned shortcomings, existing technologies teach calibration of a tilt angle sensor to include the yaw and / or pitch of a vehicle. Such calibration of the tilt angle sensor includes setting an offset to compensate for the yaw and / or pitch of the vehicle. However, such calibration is complicated, and even after such calibration, the tilt angle value obtained by the tilt angle sensor may not be accurate. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0005] In view of the foregoing, it is believed that there is a need to overcome the above-mentioned shortcomings of existing technology. [Means for solving the problem]

[0006] In one embodiment of the present invention, a two-wheeled vehicle having a lean angle sensor is disclosed. The two-wheeled vehicle includes a head pipe and a main tube. The main tube extends rearward from the head pipe. The main tube has a first section extending rearward from the head pipe and a second section extending rearward and downward from the first section. The two-wheeled vehicle further includes a lean angle sensor configured to detect a lean angle value of the vehicle. The lean angle sensor is mounted on the second section of the main tube and communicatively coupled to an electronic control unit (ECU).

[0007] In one embodiment, detecting the tilt angle corresponds to detecting the tilt of the vehicle, the tilt being the rotation about the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.

[0008] In one embodiment, the lean angle sensor is mounted on the second section of the main tube in the area behind the vehicle's engine in the fore-aft direction of the vehicle and above the engine mounting bracket in the vertical direction of the vehicle such that the lean angle sensor is positioned near the center of gravity of the vehicle.

[0009] In one embodiment, the two-wheeled vehicle includes a mounting unit for mounting the lean angle sensor on the second section of the main tube. In one non-limiting example, the mounting unit includes a vertical member and a horizontal member. The vertical member extends between a first end and a second end in an up-down direction of the vehicle and is configured such that the lean angle sensor can be mounted on the vertical member. The horizontal member extends from the first end of the vertical member in a direction toward the second section of the main tube. The horizontal member is configured to be fixedly or removably mounted to the second section of the main tube.

[0010] In another aspect of the invention, the invention discloses a method for detecting a lean angle of a two-wheeled vehicle. The method includes a step of receiving, by an electronic control unit, a vehicle lean angle value from a lean angle sensor. The lean angle sensor is mounted on a second section of a main tube. The main tube extends rearward from a head pipe of the vehicle and includes a first section and a second section. The first section extends rearward from the head pipe, and the second section extends rearward and downward from the first section of the main tube. The method further includes a step of comparing, by the electronic control unit, the vehicle lean angle value with a predetermined value. The method further includes a step of performing, by the electronic control unit, a first action when the lean angle value is greater than the predetermined value and a second action when the lean angle value is less than the predetermined value.

[0011] In one embodiment, the first operation includes one or more of: (i) disabling one or more actuators responsible for vehicle mobility in a vehicle static state or a vehicle dynamic state, (ii) transmitting the tilt angle value to a speedometer, the speedometer displaying / transmitting the tilt angle value using one or more first colors, (iii) providing haptic feedback to a driver of the vehicle, and (iv) generating an audible alarm. The second operation includes transmitting the tilt angle value to a speedometer, the speedometer displaying / transmitting the vehicle tilt angle using one or more second colors.

[0012] In one embodiment, the one or more actuators are a vehicle's ignition switch and / or fuel injection system.

[0013] In one embodiment, the haptic feedback is a vibration provided to the vehicle's handlebars in the area where the driver grips the handlebars.

[0014] Reference will now be made to embodiments of the invention, examples of which may be illustrated in the accompanying figures. These figures are intended to be illustrative rather than limiting. While the invention will generally be described in the context of these embodiments, it will be understood that this is not intended to limit the scope of the invention to these particular embodiments. It should be understood that the longitudinal axis refers to the fore-aft axis relative to the two-wheeled vehicle, defining the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, and the transverse / transverse axis refers to the lateral or side-to-side axis relative to the two-wheeled vehicle, defining the transverse / width direction of the vehicle. The arrows provided in the upper right corners of the figures indicate directions relative to the two-wheeled vehicle, where, where appropriate, the arrow F indicates the forward direction, the arrow R indicates the rearward direction, the arrow UP indicates the upward direction, and the arrow DW indicates the downward direction. It should also be understood that the phraseology and terminology used herein is for illustrative purposes only and should not be considered limiting.

[0017] FIG. 1 shows a two-wheeled vehicle 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0018] The two-wheeled vehicle 10 comprises a frame structure 11 (shown in FIG. 2) for supporting different parts of the vehicle 10. A head tube 12 is provided at the front end of said frame structure 11. The head tube 12 rotatably supports a steering shaft (not shown) within a certain range. In an upper part of the head tube 12, a handlebar 20 is rotatably connected to the steering shaft. The handlebar 20 is used to steer the vehicle 10 and is connected to a front wheel 21 through a front fork assembly 23. The front fork assembly 23 is further connected to the handlebar 20 by a pair of upper and lower brackets (not shown). The front fork assembly 23 is further supported partially on a front fender 22 and connected to the front wheel 21. An upper part of the front wheel 21 is covered by the front fender 22, which prevents mud and water from being deflected towards the upper part of the front fork assembly 23.

[0019] A fuel tank 24 is located within the forward portion of the frame structure 11 immediately behind the handlebars 20 and disposed on the main tube 13 of the frame structure 11 above an engine 25, such as an internal combustion engine. In an embodiment in which a fuel pump is provided, the fuel tank 24 forms part of a fuel supply system and supplies fuel to the engine 25 through a fuel pump (not shown) which also forms part of said supply system. In another embodiment in which a fuel pump is not present, the fuel tank 24 supplies fuel to the engine 25 through a carburetor (not shown). A seat 30 is located behind the fuel tank 24. The seat 30 comprises a front rider portion and a rear passenger portion. In one embodiment, the front rider portion and the rear passenger portion are provided as separate seat portions. In one embodiment, the front rider portion and the rear passenger portion are provided as a single seat portion.

[0020] For rider safety and in accordance with traffic regulations, a headlamp unit 31 and a turn indicator lamp unit 32 are provided in a front portion of the vehicle 10. The headlamp unit 31 and the turn indicator lamp unit 32 are housed in a headlamp housing assembly 33.

[0021] The safety of the two-wheeled vehicle 10 is further improved by providing a tilt angle sensor 50 (see FIG. 2) configured to detect in real time the tilt angle value of the vehicle 10 in steady as well as dynamic conditions. The tilt angle sensor 50 is mounted on the frame structure 11 of the vehicle and will be discussed in detail in FIGs. 2-4 of the present invention.

[0022] Further, an air cleaner 36 is fixed to the pair of rear tubes 14 extending rearward from the main tubes 13. Also, a suspension system is provided for comfortable operation of the vehicle 10 on the road. A front fork assembly 23 forming the front suspension system serves as a rigid component just like the frame structure 11. The front fork assembly 23 clamped to the head tube 12 by an upper bracket (not shown) and a lower bracket (not shown) can move in the left-right direction of the vehicle 10. Further, a rear suspension system 37, which may be a hydraulic damping arrangement, is connected to the frame structure 11 at its rear portion. In particular, at the rear portion of the frame structure 11, the rear wheels 35 are suspended by the rear suspension system 37.

[0023] The engine 25 is attached to a front lower portion of the frame structure 11 by an engine mounting bracket (see FIG. 3 ) and disposed below a portion of the main tube 13. The engine 25 is equipped with an exhaust system, which includes an exhaust pipe (not shown) connected to the engine 25 and a muffler (not shown) connected to the exhaust pipe. The muffler (not shown) extends rearward along the rear wheel 35.

[0024] Power from the engine 25 is transmitted through a transmission assembly 26 to the rear wheels 35, thereby driving and rotating the rear wheels 35. The transmission assembly 26 includes a gearbox including a gear train and a drive mechanism connecting the gearbox to the rear wheels 35. In particular, the gear train includes a gear shift shaft and a plurality of gears, each having a variable gear ratio. In particular, speed changes are achieved by actuation of a gear shift linkage assembly operatively connected to a gear shift shaft (not shown) of the transmission assembly 26.

[0025] Power from the engine 25 is thus transmitted to the rear wheel 35, which is rotatably supported on the rear end of the swingarm 47. A rear fender 48 for covering an upper side of the rear wheel 35 is attached to the rear portion of the frame structure to prevent mud and water splashed by the rotating rear wheel 35 from entering the muffler, the engine 25, and other parts disposed near the rear wheel 35. A number of rear covers 49 are attached to the rear portion of the frame structure to enhance the overall aesthetics of the vehicle 10 and to prevent undesirable foreign particles from entering parts of the vehicle 10.

[0026] In one embodiment, vehicle 10 is a hybrid vehicle and includes an electric motor as an alternative power source for propelling the vehicle.

[0027] In one embodiment, vehicle 10 includes an integral starter generator and an integral starter generator controller.

[0028] In one embodiment, to address the issue of poor thermal comfort faced by riders during long distance travel, one or more temperature control units, such as thermoelectric seat modules, are provided in the seat to enhance the thermal comfort of the rider. Furthermore, a controller for controlling the one or more thermoelectric modules is also provided in the seat 30. In one embodiment, the thermoelectric modules and the controller are positioned in the seat foam of the seat so that the connection between the controller and the two seat modules and one or more switches for activating the modules / controllers can be easily made. Also, the wires from the controller to the various components of the vehicle should be easily routed. The controller activates the seat module (heating / cooling or level of heating / cooling in the seat) located inside the foam after receiving the input from the switch. The switch can be located on the left or right side of the seat 30 in the width direction of the vehicle.

[0029] Figure 2 shows a frame structure 11 of a vehicle 10 and a lean angle sensor 50 mounted on the frame structure 11, in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Figure 3 shows the location of the lean angle sensor 50 relative to the engine 25 and engine mounting bracket 52, in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention.

[0030] As shown in the figure, the main tube 13 of the frame structure 11 extends rearward from the head pipe 12. The main tube 13 includes a first section 13a and a second section 13b. The first section 13a extends rearward from the head pipe 12, and the second section 13b extends rearward and downward from the first section 13a. The tilt angle sensor 50 is attached on the second section 13b of the main tube 13.

[0031] More specifically, as shown in FIG. 3, the lean angle sensor 50 is positioned on the second section 13b of the main tube 13 in the area behind the engine 25 in the fore-aft direction of the vehicle and above the engine mounting bracket 52 in the vertical direction of the vehicle.

[0032] Therefore, the tilt angle sensor 50 is located substantially in the center of the vehicle 10, and the center of gravity of the vehicle 10 is located in close proximity to the tilt angle sensor 50. It should be understood that when the tilt angle sensor 50 is mounted in an area near the center of gravity of the vehicle 10, the pitch and / or yaw of the vehicle 10 are not required for the calculation of the tilt angle value of the vehicle 10. The tilt angle value of the vehicle 10 can be accurately calculated by only detecting the tilt of the vehicle 10. Thus, a complex calibration of the tilt angle sensor 50 to include the pitch and / or yaw of the vehicle 10 is avoided. In other words, by mounting the tilt angle sensor near the center of gravity of the vehicle, the calibration becomes simple and accurate, so that the calibration becomes less complicated and does not require more time and effort for its development. It should be understood that there is no change in the structure or function of the tilt angle sensor 50. The present invention changes the mounting location of the tilt angle sensor for accurate measurement of the tilt angle of the vehicle 10.

[0033] The lean angle sensor is communicatively coupled to an electronic control unit (ECU) 54. The location of the ECU 54 as shown in FIG. 3 should not be construed as limiting, and the ECU may be located on a different portion of the vehicle 10 where it can effectively communicate with the lean angle sensor 50. The lean angle sensor 50 is electrically interfaced with the ECU 54. In one embodiment, the ECU 54 provides sensor power and ground to the lean angle sensor 50 and receives output from the lean angle sensor 50. In one embodiment, the routing of the lean angle sensor is such that it does not interface with other primary sensors required for engine operation.

[0034] FIG. 4 shows a mounting unit 56 for mounting the tilt angle sensor 50 on the main tube 13 according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0035] As shown, the mounting unit 56 includes a vertical member 58 and a horizontal member 60. The vertical member 58 extends between a first end 58a and a second end 58b in the vertical direction of the vehicle. The tilt angle sensor 50 is mounted on the vertical member 58. The horizontal member 60 extends from the first end 58a of the vertical member 58 in a direction toward the second section 13b of the main tube 13. The horizontal member 60 is configured to be fixedly or removably mounted to the second section 13b of the main tube 13.

[0036] In one embodiment, the vertical member 58 has one or more mounting holes M1 that correspond to one or more mounting holes M2 provided on the tilt angle sensor 50. During assembly, the one or more mounting holes on the vertical member 58 are aligned with one or more mounting holes on the tilt angle sensor 50 and secured by one or more fasteners F, such as bolts, nuts, screws, washers, studs, rivets, anchors, inserts, and threaded rods known to those skilled in the art.

[0037] In one embodiment, the horizontal member 60 is fixedly attached to the second section of the main tube by means such as welding as known in the art.

[0038] In one embodiment, the horizontal member 60 is removably attached to the second section of the main tube by a clamp unit.

[0039] In one embodiment, the horizontal member 60 is removably attached to a bracket disposed on the second section of the main tube.

[0040] It should also be understood that the shape of the mounting unit 58 should not be construed as limiting and other shapes of the mounting unit 58 can be used to mount the tilt angle sensor on the second section of the main tube. In one non-limiting example, the mounting unit is Z-shaped.

[0041] FIG. 5 illustrates a method 100 for detecting an inclination angle value of a two-wheeled vehicle 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0042] As step 101, the method includes receiving a lean angle value of the vehicle 10 from a lean angle sensor 50 by an electronic control unit (ECU) 54. The lean angle sensor 50 is mounted on the second section 13b of the main tube 13. The main tube 13 extends rearward from the head pipe 12 of the vehicle 10 and includes a first section 13a and a second section 13b. The first section 13a extends rearward from the head pipe 12, and the second section 13b extends rearward and downward from the first section 13a of the main tube 13. The lean angle value detected by the lean angle sensor 50 is transmitted to the ECU 54 in real time.

[0043] In step 102, the method includes comparing the vehicle lean angle to a predetermined value. Step 102 is performed by the ECU 54.

[0044] In step 103, the method includes performing a first action when the lean angle value is greater than a predetermined value. Step 103 is performed by the ECU 54.

[0045] In step 104, the method includes performing a second action when the lean angle value is less than a predetermined value. Step 104 is performed by the ECU 54.

[0046] In one embodiment, the first action includes one or more of: (i) disabling one or more actuators responsible for vehicle mobility in a vehicle static state or a vehicle dynamic state; (ii) transmitting the inclination angle value to a speedometer, which displays and transmits the inclination angle value using one or more first colors; (iii) providing haptic feedback to a driver of the vehicle; and (iv) generating an audible alarm.

[0047] In one non-limiting example, the one or more actuators include the vehicle's ignition switch and / or fuel injection system. In another non-limiting example, the lean angle value is displayed using the color red. In another non-limiting example, the ECU 54 communicates with the vehicle's speedometer through hardware or through communication area network (CAN) communication. In another non-limiting example, the lean angle value is displayed numerically on the speedometer. In another non-limiting example, an alarm notification is provided to the rider prior to generating an audible alarm. In another non-limiting example, the haptic feedback is a vibration provided to the handlebars of the vehicle (10) in the area where the driver grips the handlebars.

[0048] In one embodiment, the second operation includes transmitting the tilt angle value to a speedometer, which displays the tilt angle value using one or more second colors. In one non-explanatory example, the tilt angle value is displayed using the color green.

[0049] It should be understood that the first action is executed by the ECU 54 for the safety of the rider and / or to warn the rider that the lean angle is greater than a predetermined angle, for example, when a rider riding on a vehicle falls and one or more actuators become disabled, the vehicle may cause damage to itself and the rider.

[0050] The predetermined angle is typically preset by the vehicle manufacturer. In one non-limiting example, the predetermined value is the maximum lean angle that is safe during turning and / or leaning of the vehicle.

[0051] Advantageously, the present invention obtains an accurate value of the tilt angle of the vehicle 10 without complex calibration. In other words, complex calibration of the tilt angle sensor to include the yaw and pitch of the vehicle for the calculation of the tilt angle is not required. In other words, the present invention eliminates the need for calibration of the tilt angle sensor. There is no change in the structure or function of the tilt angle sensor 50. The present invention changes the mounting location of the tilt angle sensor for simple and accurate measurement of the tilt angle of the vehicle 10. The present invention further provides feedback to the rider to enhance the customer experience. The present invention further provides warning signals such as alarm notification, haptic feedback, and audible alarm to inform the rider of the risk of rollover when the tilt angle value exceeds a predetermined value / threshold. The present invention further provides safety mechanisms such as disabling one or more actuators of the vehicle when the tilt angle value exceeds a predetermined value / threshold. Such safety mechanisms ensure that damage to the vehicle as well as the rider is minimal.

[0052] The claimed steps discussed above are not conventional, conventional, or well-understood in the art, as they enable the following solutions to existing problems in the prior art. In particular, the technical problem of calibrating the tilt angle sensor 50 to include yaw and pitch for the calculation of the tilt angle of the vehicle 10 is solved by changing the mounting location of the tilt angle sensor 50 as claimed in the present invention. In other words, by mounting the tilt angle sensor 50 closer to the center of gravity of the vehicle 10, only the vehicle tilt is needed to accurately calculate the tilt angle of the vehicle 10.

[0053] Furthermore, one or more computer-readable storage media may be utilized to implement embodiments consistent with the present invention. A computer-readable storage medium refers to any type of physical memory in which information or data readable by a processor may be stored. Thus, a computer-readable storage medium may store instructions for execution by one or more processors of an electronic control unit, including instructions for causing the processor to execute steps or stages consistent with the embodiments described herein. The term "computer-readable medium" should be understood to include tangible objects and exclude carrier waves and transient signals, i.e., non-transitory. Examples include random access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), volatile memory, non-volatile memory, hard drives, CD ROMs, DVDs, flash drives, disks, and any other known physical storage medium.

[0054] While the present invention has been described with respect to specific embodiments, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the claims. [Explanation of symbols]
