Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a sanitary article, such as a sanitary pad, panty liner, diaper, or incontinence pad, comprising a topsheet and a backsheet, wherein the topsheet comprises a water-soluble dry coating that includes a skin benefit additive. [Background technology]
[0002] Hygiene products of the type to which this disclosure relates are worn against the skin and include a topsheet and a backsheet layer. Any use of products applied in direct contact with the skin can result in undesirable side effects. These can result from occlusion, moisture, mechanical, microbial and enzymatic factors, all of which interact to different degrees and amplify each other's effects, and can cause various forms of skin irritation to the user of said products.
[0003] During frequent attacks of body fluids and frequent use of disposable sanitary products, the skin can become irritated, appear red and become painful to the touch. Shaved skin in the genital area and use of tight clothing can also potentially cause rashes and skin irritation. Creams, ointments or formulations can be used to provide an artificial hydrophobic barrier on the skin, preventing or relieving skin irritation. However, the use of such hydrophobic compositions in disposable sanitary products has a negative effect on the absorbency performance of the product. To avoid this side effect, hydrophobic compositions are often applied on topsheets in relatively low amounts and in various patterns, for example, in elongated stripes that run parallel on the topsheet.
[0004] The separate application of creams, formulas, and ointments to the skin is often messy and inconvenient. Often, these products are not used prophylactically, but only when signs of skin irritation, such as diaper rash, appear. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0005] In view of the above, there remains a need for sanitary products with beneficial effects on the skin, providing an improved skin barrier and preventing skin irritation while retaining adequate properties in terms of absorption performance. [Means for solving the problem]
[0006] One or more of the above mentioned objects may be achieved by a hygiene article according to claim 1. Further embodiments are set out in the dependent claims, in the following description and in the drawings.
[0007] A sanitary article, such as a sanitary pad, panty liner, pants-type diaper, or open-type diaper, according to the present disclosure, comprises a fluid-permeable topsheet and a backsheet. The sanitary article extends in a longitudinal direction and a transverse direction and has first and second longitudinal side edges and a front edge and a rear edge. The topsheet is provided with a water-soluble dry coating in a coating zone on its first surface. The first surface of the topsheet is the side of the topsheet that faces the wearer, and the dry coating is a water-soluble dry coating comprising allantoin and betaine.
[0008] The term "hygienic article" refers to a product that is placed against the wearer's skin in the crotch of the wearer to absorb and contain bodily exudates such as discharge, urine, feces, and menses. This disclosure relates primarily to disposable hygienic articles, meaning articles that are not intended to be laundered or restored or reused as hygienic articles. Examples of disposable hygienic articles include feminine hygiene products, such as sanitary napkins, panty liners, incontinence pads, diapers, and the like.
[0009] During use, the sanitary article remains in intimate contact with the skin of the user. A moist environment between the topsheet and the skin resulting from frequent insults during use of the sanitary article can increase friction, leading to skin irritation and a compromised skin barrier.
[0010] To prevent skin irritation and impaired skin barrier, the topsheet has been provided with allantoin (CAS [97-59-6]). Allantoin has been found to provide a soothing skin effect, acting as an anti-irritant and soothing agent for sensitive skin as well as supporting the skin to become more elastic. Allantoin interacts with the keratin in the skin to thin out abnormally thick epidermis. By providing a constantly shedding epidermal layer, more cells are produced, keeping the skin healthy and plump. By stimulating rapid cell renewal, healthy tissue growth is stimulated. This has been found to be important in wound healing, allowing dead skin cells to be cleared away, creating healthy new tissue. Allantoin also aids in collagen synthesis, thereby helping the skin remain elastic.
[0011] To further strengthen the skin barrier, the dry coating combines allantoin with betaine, which has been found to enhance overall skin barrier function even in healthy skin. Betaine upregulates tight junction proteins in the outermost part of the skin. These proteins act like bridges between cells and like passageways between cells, thereby allowing only selective permeability. Betaine may be trimethylglycine, CAS [107-43-7]. Trimethylglycine is an amino acid derivative, a naturally occurring amino acid derivative active in the cellular metabolism of many organisms, including humans.
[0012] Betaine also has moisturizing properties: by attracting water, it helps keep the skin hydrated. Betaine is also an osmolyte that helps living cells maintain their shape and manage water balance under osmotic stress.
[0013] The present inventors have found that the water-soluble dry coating according to the present invention provides a surprisingly high transfer rate from the top sheet of the sanitary article to the skin of the user. The permeation of allantoin and betaine can also be detected together with the improved skin condition of the user. It has also been found that the fact that the skin benefit agent is provided in the water-soluble dry coating provides a smooth and comfortable feeling without the sticky feeling of hydrophobic formulations.
[0014] The combination of allantoin and betaine has also been found to provide a combined effect of improving skin barrier properties, thereby preventing and reducing skin irritation in users of hygiene products.
[0015] Allantoin may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.0002 to 0.36 gsm when measured over the entire coating zone on the article. Optionally, allantoin may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.0005 to 0.21 gsm, or from 0.002 to 0.08 gsm when measured over the entire coating zone on the article. Such an amount of allantoin promotes sufficient and improved transfer rate from the topsheet to the skin during use of the hygiene article, and improved skin benefits.
[0016] The betaine may be present in the dry coating on the article in an amount ranging from 0.001 to 1.2 gsm, measured over the entire coating zone. Optionally, the betaine may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.0025 to 0.7 gsm, measured over the entire coating zone. Optionally, the betaine may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.01 to 0.5 gsm, measured over the entire coating zone. Such an amount of betaine promotes sufficient transfer rate from the topsheet to the skin and also penetration into the skin during use of the hygiene article, thereby providing improved skin benefits.
[0017] Improved combined effects were seen when allantoin was present in the dry coating in an amount within the range of 0.0002 to 0.36 gsm, or within the range of 0.0005 to 0.21 gsm, or within the range of 0.002 to 0.08, and when betaine was present in the dry coating in an amount within the range of 0.001 to 1.2 gsm, or within the range of 0.0025 to 0.7 gsm, or within the range of 0.01 to 0.5 gsm, when measured across the entire coated topsheet.
[0018] The coating is applied to the topsheet as an aqueous formulation with the allantoin and betaine dispersed and / or dissolved in the aqueous formulation. The allantoin may be partially dissolved and partially dispersed in the aqueous formulation depending on the amount of allantoin added to the formulation.
[0019] The water-soluble dry coating may include a water-miscible vehicle such as glycerin, propylene glycol, and / or PEG. The dry water-soluble coating may be oil-free and emulsifier-free, alternatively the dry water-soluble coating may be non-encapsulated oil-free and / or emulsifier-free. Glycerin may be used as the base for the dry coating and may be present in an amount of 1.0 to 98.5% by weight.
[0020] According to one embodiment, the entire area of the topsheet is coated. According to this embodiment, the area of the coating zone is the same as the total area of the topsheet. Alternatively, only a portion of the total area of the topsheet is coated.
[0021] The topsheet may have a central coating-free zone arranged along the longitudinal centerline of the sanitary article. The coating zone may be arranged to provide outer borders defining an inner central zone consisting of or including the central coating-free zone.
[0022] The sanitary article may be an open diaper, a belt diaper, or a pant diaper, and the dry coating covers at least 2% or at least 5% of the total surface area of the topsheet. The diaper has a larger surface area than the sanitary pad and therefore covers a larger area of the user's skin, and the coating zone may be arranged only in some parts, such as in the rear part of the diaper, in the groin area, or in the abdominal area.
[0023] The absorbent core may be arranged between the topsheet and the backsheet. The absorbent core may comprise one or several absorbent layers, for example two or three absorbent layers. The absorbent core may also comprise an acquisition and distribution layer (ADL), which may be arranged between the topsheet and the absorbent core.
[0024] The absorbent core may include pulp fibers and / or superabsorbent polymer particles.
[0025] The dry coating may be deposited in the dry coating zone in an amount ranging from 0.2 to 12 gsm, optionally in an amount ranging from 0.5 to 7 gsm, or in an amount ranging from 0.5 to 3.0 gsm.
[0026] The aqueous formulation may be added to the topsheet before assembly of the sanitary article, or may be added to the topsheet of the assembled sanitary article before or after cutting out the individual sanitary articles. After drying of the topsheet, a dry coating is formed. The amount of dry coating is measured after drying of the topsheet, and therefore the amount of coating defined in this application is the amount of coating on the article during use of the article.
[0027] The topsheet may include a second surface opposite the first surface, the second surface of the topsheet being printed in a print zone, and the coating zone on the first surface of the topsheet may overlap the print zone partially or completely in a depth direction perpendicular to the machine direction, which may provide the user with visual cues as to where the dry coating is located, which may provide the user with instructions on how to position the article and may also provide the user with a signal of the presence of a dry coating beneficial to the skin.
[0028] The sanitary article may be configured with a front third, a rear third, and a central third arranged between the front third and the rear third when viewed in the longitudinal direction. The coating zone may be arranged to provide an outer border in the rear third of the sanitary article that defines an inner rear zone. The coating zone may cover at least 25%, or at least 35%, or at least 50% of the total surface area of the topsheet in the rear third of the sanitary article. Optionally, the coating zone covers in the range of 25% to 80%, such as in the range of 35 to 75%, of the total surface area of the topsheet in the rear third of the sanitary article.
[0029] Alternatively or additionally, the coating zone may be configured to provide an outer border defining an inner front zone in the front third of the sanitary article. The coating zone may cover at least 25%, or at least 35%, or at least 50% of the total surface area of the topsheet in the front third of the sanitary article. Optionally, the coating zone covers in the range of 25% to 80%, such as in the range of 35 to 75%, of the total surface area of the topsheet in the front third of the sanitary article.
[0030] Alternatively or additionally, the coating zone may be configured to provide an outer border that defines an inner central coating-free zone in the central third of the sanitary article. The coating zone may cover at least 25%, or at least 35%, or at least 50% of the total surface area of the topsheet in the central third of the sanitary article. Optionally, the coating zone covers in the range of 25% to 80%, such as in the range of 35 to 75%, of the total surface area of the topsheet in the central third of the sanitary article.
[0031] The formulation may be applied by any suitable method or combination of methods, such as, for example, coating, slot coating, spraying, kiss rolling, dipping, or printing.
[0032] The invention will now be further described by way of non-limiting examples and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [Brief description of the drawings]

The hygiene product may be a sanitary napkin, an incontinence pad or an insert for a diaper.
[0036] In FIG. 1, the sanitary article 1 is in the form of a sanitary pad and comprises a topsheet 2 and a backsheet 3. The sanitary article 1 extends in a longitudinal direction L and a transverse direction T and has first and second longitudinal side edges 4, 5 and a leading edge 6 and a trailing edge 7. The topsheet 2 comprises a first side 2a facing the user and a second side 2b opposite the side facing the user. The sanitary article 1 comprises an absorbent core 8 arranged between the topsheet 2 and the backsheet 3. The topsheet 2 is provided with a dry coating in a coating zone 9 on the first side 2a of the topsheet 2. The coating is a water-soluble dry coating comprising allantoin and betaine. The absorbent core 8 is an optional feature of the sanitary article 1 of the present disclosure.
[0037] The topsheet 2 may comprise or consist of spunbonded, meltblown, carded, hydroentangled, or wet-laid fibrous nonwoven layers. Suitable nonwoven materials may consist of natural fibers such as wood pulp and cotton fibers, synthetic thermoplastic fibers such as polyolefins, polyesters, polyamides, and blends and combinations thereof, or mixtures of natural and synthetic fibers. Materials suitable for the topsheet material should be soft and non-irritating to the skin, and should be easily permeable to bodily fluids such as menses and urine. The coating is applied to the topsheet as an aqueous formulation in which the allantoin and betaine are dispersed and / or dissolved in the aqueous formulation. The allantoin may be partially dissolved and partially dispersed in the aqueous formulation depending on the amount of allantoin added to the formulation. The betaine is dissolved in the aqueous formulation. The formulation may be applied by any suitable method or combination of methods, such as coating, slot coating, spraying, kiss-rolling, dipping, or printing. The aqueous formulation may be applied to the topsheet prior to assembly of the sanitary article, or to the topsheet of an assembled sanitary article before or after cutting out the individual sanitary articles. After drying of the topsheet, a dry coating is formed.
[0038] One example of a coating composition applied to the topsheet may be demineralized water, glycerin (1% to 98.5% by weight), betaine (1% to 10% by weight), allantoin (0.5% to 5% by weight), optionally phenoxyethanol, and optionally citric acid.
[0039] Allantoin may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.0002 to 0.36 gsm when measured over the entire coating zone. Optionally, allantoin may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.0005 to 0.21 gsm, or in an amount ranging from 0.002 to 0.08 gsm when measured over the entire coating zone. Such an amount of allantoin promotes sufficient and improved transfer rate from the topsheet to the skin and improved skin benefits during use of the hygiene article.
[0040] The betaine may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.001 to 1.2 gsm, measured over the entire coating zone. Optionally, the betaine may be present in the dry coating in an amount ranging from 0.0025 to 0.7 gsm, measured over the entire coating zone, or in an amount ranging from 0.01 to 0.5, measured over the entire coating zone. Such an amount of betaine promotes sufficient transfer rate from the topsheet to the skin and penetration rate into the skin during use of the hygiene article, thereby providing improved skin benefits.
[0041] In FIG. 1, the top sheet 2 is aligned along the longitudinal center line L c The central coating-free zone 12 is arranged along the longitudinal centerline L of the sanitary article 1. c The coating zone 9 may have a length corresponding to 25% to 80% of the length of the topsheet, as measured by the coating temperature. The coating zone 9 is configured to provide an outer border that defines an inner central zone consisting of or including a central coating-free zone 12.
[0042] The topsheet 2 is further printed with printing elements 10 provided in a printing zone 11. The printing elements 10 are printed on a second side 2b of the topsheet 2, i.e. on the side opposite to the side on which the coating zone 9 is provided. The printing zone 11 overlaps and corresponds to the coating zone 9 in a depth direction perpendicular to the machine direction.
[0043] The top sheet 1 is further formed along the vertical center line L of the sanitary product. c The central print-free zone 13 is arranged along the longitudinal centerline L of the sanitary article 1. c The print zone 11 may have a length corresponding to 35% to 80% of the length of the topsheet 2, as measured at 100° C. The print zone 11 is configured to provide an outer border defining an inner central zone consisting of or including a central print-free zone 13.
[0044] The dry coating may include a water-miscible vehicle such as glycerin, propylene glycol, and / or PEG. The dry coating may be free of oil and emulsifiers, and the dry coating may alternatively be free of non-encapsulated oil and / or emulsifiers. Glycerin may be used as the base for the dry coating and may be present in an amount of 1.0 to 98.5% by weight.
[0045] The backsheet 3 may consist of a thin plastic film, such as a polyethylene or polypropylene film, a nonwoven material coated with a liquid impermeable material, a hydrophobic nonwoven, all of which resist liquid penetration. Laminates of plastic films and nonwoven materials may also be used. The backsheet material may be breathable to allow vapors to escape from the absorbent structure while still preventing liquids from passing through the backsheet material.
[0046] The absorbent core 8 constitutes the absorbent structure of the article, which acquires and stores bodily fluids. The absorbent core may be of any conventional type. Examples of commonly occurring absorbent materials are cellulosic fluff pulp, tissue, highly absorbent polymers (so-called superabsorbents), absorbent foam materials, absorbent nonwoven materials, or the like. It is common to combine cellulosic fluff pulp and superabsorbent polymers in the absorbent core. Superabsorbent polymers are water-swellable, water-insoluble organic or inorganic materials capable of absorbing at least about 20 times the mass of the material itself in an aqueous solution containing 0.9 weight percent sodium chloride. Organic materials suitable for use as superabsorbent materials can include natural materials such as polysaccharides, polypeptides, as well as synthetic materials such as synthetic hydrogel polymers. The size and absorbent capacity of the absorbent core may be varied to suit different product types, such as sanitary napkins or panty liners for adult incontinent persons.
[0047] A suitable technique for manufacturing the absorbent core of the present disclosure is mat formation through an air-laying process, in which an air-permeable form is provided, fibrous material is air-laid into the form, and the form is filled, thereby producing an absorbent core with the desired amount of fibrous material.
[0048] The hygienic article may further comprise an acquisition layer arranged between the absorbent core and the topsheet, which is bonded to the topsheet at least by means of embossing. However, it may also be attached to the topsheet by adhesive. The liquid acquisition layer is adapted to quickly receive and temporarily store the discharged liquid before it is absorbed by the absorbent core. Such an acquisition distribution layer may be composed of, for example, an airlaid, spunlace or high loft nonwoven, or a foam material. The nonwoven material may be hydrophilic. The hydrophilic material may be obtained by adding a surfactant.
[0049] Airlaid nonwovens can be made with fluff, wood pulp, where the fluff fibers are dispersed in a fast moving air stream and condensed onto a moving screen using pressure and vacuum. The web can be resin bonded and / or thermoplastic resins dispersed within the pulp. The web can be thermally bonded (by heat), latex bonded (by adhesives), or multi-bonded (combination of heat and latex bonded), or mechanically bonded (high compression and temperature, hydrogen bonded).
[0050] High loft materials are nonwoven materials and may be substantially free of absorbent fibers and superabsorbent materials. High loft nonwoven materials may include thermoplastic polymer fibers, selected from, but not limited to, polyesters, polyamides, and polyolefins, such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), or any mixture thereof. High loft materials refer to low density bulk-like fabrics compared to flat paper-like fabrics. High loft webs are characterized by a relatively low density.
[0051] Figure 3 is a bar graph showing the results of a transmission study conducted on two hygiene products according to the invention. Eight subjects wore the hygiene products on three different spots on the volar forearm for three days (three products per day). One spot was covered with a product coated with formulation A, one spot was covered with a product coated with formulation B, and one spot was covered with a reference product without either formulation. After three days, the skin in the test spots, as well as one additional spot where no product was worn, was collected by tape stripping. Sample tape strips were extracted and analyzed by LC-MS / MS to quantify the betaine and allantoin content.
[0052] As can be seen from FIG. 3, delivery of both betaine and allantoin was readily detectable on the skin, thereby exerting the desired effect on the wearer of the hygiene product.
[0053] [Table 1]
[0054] FIG. 4 shows the results of a study of the soothing effect of hygiene products according to the present disclosure. Soothing effect was defined as a faster recovery from irritation to the original normal skin condition and was assessed by transepidermal water loss (TEWL) as a measure of skin barrier function by using an AquaFlux Model AF200 instrument (Biox Systems, London, UK). Eight subjects participated in the study. On day 0, baseline values were measured for the skin on the palmar forearm of each subject. An irritant, 0.3% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), was added to three spots on the subjects' arms and the arms were left irritated for 24 hours. After 24 hours, on day 1, the irritant was removed and the skin condition was measured. After the measurements, one spot was covered with a hygiene product containing formulation A, one spot was covered with a hygiene product containing formulation B, one spot was covered with a hygiene product without formulation (reference product), and one spot was left uncovered as an untreated reference. Subjects were asked to change their own hygiene products so that three products were used per spot per day. Skin condition was measured 24 hours (day 2) and 72 hours (day 4) after subjects started wearing the products.
[0055] As can be seen from FIG. 4, the hygiene products provided with formulations A and B according to table 1 showed a skin soothing effect already after one day and still showed a further skin soothing effect after three days of using the hygiene products. [Explanation of symbols]
