[0008] Various examples and components of the present disclosure are described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof, and which show, by way of illustration, examples of various structures and environments in which aspects of the present disclosure may be practiced, with the understanding that other structures and environments may be utilized, and that structural and functional modifications may be made to the structures and methods specifically described herein without departing from the scope of the present disclosure.
[0009] Additionally, terms such as "front," "frontside," "back," "backside," "top," "base," "bottom," "side," "opposite," "forward," "rearward," and the like may be used herein to describe various exemplary features and elements, and these terms are used herein for convenience (e.g., based on exemplary orientations as illustrated, orientations in normal use, or both). Nothing in this specification should be construed as requiring that structures be oriented in a particular three-dimensional (spatial) orientation in order to fall within the scope of the claims.
[0010] 1A and 1B illustrate an exemplary bag 200 that can be configured to carry or contain a variety of items. It is noted that this bag is merely one example of a bag that can have many configurations and variations, including the number and location of interior and exterior pockets, bag and pocket closures (e.g., snaps or zippers), the location and number of handles and straps, and other features.
[0011] The bag may generally include an outer shell 216, a shoulder strap 218 and / or a carrying strap 210, a base 215, an opening 250, and a storage space 204. As shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B, the outer shell 216 defines the storage space 204 for storing desired contents within the bag. The opening 250 is configured to allow access to the storage space 204. The outer shell has at least two sides, a front, a rear defining side walls, and a base. The base 215 may be configured to keep the tote bag in an upright position whether or not the storage space 204 is filled with contents. The base 215 may be rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible, and may be configured to be oval, elliptical, rectangular, circular, square, or other shapes. As also shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B, the tote bag may also include various handles and straps (e.g., straps 218, 210) for carrying, holding, or securing the tote bag or for securing other items to the tote bag. Additionally, as shown in FIG. 1A, strap 218 may be longer than strap 210 to provide an over-the-shoulder strap for carrying the tote bag 200 over a user's shoulder. Alternatively, strap 210 may be shorter than strap 218 to provide hand carrying of the tote bag 200. However, any number of handles of different lengths and sizes are contemplated. The outer front surface of the outer shell 216 may include zero, one, or more pockets. FIG. 1A illustrates a pocket 212 attached to the outer front surface of the outer shell 216. Such a pocket may have a closure such as a zipper, Velcro, snaps, buttons, detents, clamps, or magnets, and any combination thereof. As shown, such pockets can be oriented with an opening extending vertically (e.g., an opening having a vertical zipper). Additionally, such pockets can also be oriented with an opening extending horizontally or diagonally.1B shows a pocket 270 located on the outside rear surface of the outer shell 216 just below the top rear edge. Such a pocket may have a closure such as a zipper, "velcro," snaps, buttons, detents, clamps, or magnets, and any combination thereof. Other pockets may also be located at other locations on the outside rear surface of the outer shell 216.
[0012] The bag can be configured to close the opening 250 with any suitable closure device (e.g., a zipper, such as a waterproof zipper). For example, a waterproof zipper can make the bag substantially water resistant and keep the desired contents dry for an extended period of time, even when the bag is wet. It is also contemplated that the opening can include a variety of sealing devices in addition to the waterproof zipper, such as magnets, "velcro", buttons, snaps, buckles, zippers, a seal formed by folding excess material multiple times (e.g., a seal configured to roll the opening closed), sealants, metal or plastic clamps, and combinations thereof, to seal the opening. Closures are described and explained, for example, in U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 388,817, filed July 29, 2021, and U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 537,285, filed November 29, 2021, the disclosures of all of which are incorporated herein by reference for all purposes, without limitation. In one example, the bag may be designed to hold water within the storage space 204, making the bag "water resistant" from the outside to the inside. In other words, the bag may be configured to be "water tight" on the inside of the outer shell 216, making the bag suitable for carrying liquids such as water. In another example, the storage space of the bag may be configured with a drain hole (not shown) that extends through the outer shell and allows fluids to drain from the storage space. This allows a user to easily clean or rinse the storage space of the bag with a cleaning device such as a hose or power washer, or to drain water from the bag. It is also contemplated that the bag may be waterproof or water resistant to prevent water from contacting the contents.
[0013] The outer shell and inner liner can be made of antibacterial or antifungal materials. The bag can also be made of water-resistant or waterproof materials to keep the contents contained within the bag substantially dry. In one particular example, the outer shell 216 can be constructed of a TPU nylon fabric with a double-sided laminate. The outer shell 216 can be made of a nylon fabric with a TPU laminate coated on both sides. In one particular example, a TPU nylon fabric is used that is 0.1-1.0 millimeters thick, waterproof, and includes an antibacterial additive that meets all Food and Drug Administration requirements. In one particular example, the nylon can be a TPU-treated 840d nylon. Alternatively, various materials or polymers can be used to construct the outer shell 216, such as weldable waterproof fabrics, such as PVC, TPU-coated nylon, coated fabrics, and polyester. In some embodiments, the bag can be a generally collapsible bag for easy storage and transportation. It is also contemplated that insulation may be placed between the outer shell and the inner liner to provide thermal insulation to the bag, as shown and described, for example, in U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 388,817, filed July 29, 2021, and U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 537,285, filed November 29, 2021, the entire disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference for all purposes, without limitation.
[0014] FIG. 1B also shows a suitcase pass-through (sleeve) 280 attached to the rear exterior of the outer shell 216. The sleeve 280 allows the bag to be attached to or detached from a suitcase (e.g., suitcase) handle by passing the suitcase handle through the sleeve 280 or removing it from the sleeve 280. For example, the sleeve 280 can be slid over a wheeled suitcase handle to be carried on board or checked in, to keep the bag balanced on the suitcase. The suitcase can be, for example, a wheeled suitcase, a duffel bag, or a wheeled computer bag. The sleeve 280 has a built-in magnetic closure (described below). The magnetic closure is configured to be disconnected when the suitcase handle is passed through the sleeve and reconnected when the suitcase handle is removed from the sleeve.
[0015] 2A-2F illustrate features that may be included in the exemplary bag 200 shown in FIGS. 1A and 1B. FIG. 2A illustrates the rear side of the exemplary bag interior. The illustrated rear side of the bag interior has two interior pockets 242, 244 attached thereto and two areas 246 for liquid containers 290. FIG. 2B illustrates the front side of the exemplary bag interior. The illustrated front side of the bag interior has two interior pockets 260, a zippered pocket 248, and two bottle pockets 246. FIG. 2C illustrates a front pocket 212. The front pocket 212 is configured to be attached to the front exterior of the outer shell 216, as shown in FIG. 2D. Such a pocket 212 may have closures such as zippers, "velcro", snaps, buttons, or magnets, and any combination thereof. It is also contemplated that the material forming the pocket 212 may have some elasticity to allow the pocket 212 to be closed in a biased manner. As shown, such pockets 212 may be oriented with an opening extending vertically (e.g., an opening with a vertical zipper). Additionally, such pockets 212 may be oriented with an opening extending horizontally or diagonally. FIG. 2D shows the front of the bag 200 with the pocket 212. FIG. 2E shows a side view of the bag 200. FIG. 2F shows a pocket 270 located on the outside rear surface of the outer shell 216 just below the top rear edge. Such a pocket may have a closure such as a zipper, "velcro", snaps, buttons, or magnets, and any combination thereof. It is also contemplated that the material forming the pocket may have some elasticity to allow the pocket to close even with a biased closure. Other pockets may also be located at other locations on the outside rear surface of the outer shell 216. FIG. 2G shows the top of the bag with an opening 250 with a closure device. FIG. 2H shows the bottom 215 of the bag.
[0016] Also shown in Figure 2F is a luggage thread (sleeve) 280 attached to the outside rear surface of the outer shell 216. The sleeve 280 allows the bag to be attached to and detached from a luggage (e.g., suitcase) handle 600 by threading the luggage (e.g., suitcase) handle 600 through and out of the sleeve 280. A magnetic closure (described below) is built into the sleeve 280. The magnetic closure is configured to disconnect when the luggage handle is threaded through the sleeve and reconnect when the luggage handle is unthreaded from the sleeve.
[0017] The luggage sleeve can be modified to accommodate various widths of luggage handles commonly found on wheeled luggage, computer bags, etc. Typically, such handles are pulled (e.g., extended) out of the luggage when the handle is used to pull the luggage, and pushed back into the luggage when the handle is not in use.
[0018] 3A and 3B show another exemplary bag 300 that can be configured to carry or store a variety of items. The bag can generally include an outer shell 316, straps 310, side handles 352, a base 315, an opening 350, and a storage space 304. As shown in FIGS. 3A and 3B, the outer shell 316 defines the storage space 304 for storing desired contents within the bag. The semi-rigid base 315 can be configured to allow the bag to remain upright whether or not the storage space 304 contains contents. The semi-rigid base 315 can be configured to be oval, elliptical, rectangular, circular, square, or other shapes. The bag can also include a variety of handles and straps (e.g., straps 310, handles 352) for carrying, holding, or securing the bag or for securing other items to the bag. The loop 314 below the handle 352 may be provided for aesthetic purposes and / or may be used to tie the bag down or clip small accessories such as a carabiner with a key or bottle opener to the bag. However, any number of straps and handles of different lengths and sizes are contemplated. The outer front of the outer shell 316 may have zero, one or more pockets. FIG. 3A shows a pocket 312 attached to the outer front of the outer shell 316. Such pockets may have closures such as zippers, "velcro", snaps, buttons, or magnets, and any combination thereof. It is also contemplated that the material forming the pocket may have some elasticity to allow the pocket to close even in a biased closure. As shown, such pockets may be oriented with an opening extending horizontally (e.g., an opening with a horizontal zipper). Additionally, such pockets may be oriented with an opening extending vertically or diagonally.
[0019] Figure 3B shows a luggage thread (sleeve) 380 attached to the outside rear surface of the outer shell 316. The bag can be attached and detached from a luggage (e.g., suitcase) handle 600 by threading the luggage (e.g., suitcase) handle 600 through and out of the sleeve 380. As in Figure 2F, the sleeve 380 also incorporates a magnetic closure (described below) configured to disconnect the luggage handle when it is threaded through the sleeve and reconnect when the luggage handle is unthreaded from the sleeve.
[0020] 4 is an exploded view illustrating an exemplary configuration of luggage sleeve 480. An inner panel 412 may be attached to the rear of bag 400. A bottom and both sides of inner panel 412 may be attached to form a pocket 414. Inner panel 412 is generally rectangular with a width greater than a height, but may be any suitable size and shape.
[0021] The outer panel 410 forms an outer portion of the sleeve. Each side of the outer panel 410 can be attached to a corresponding side of the inner panel 412 to form the sleeve 480. Alternatively, the sides of the outer panel 410 can be attached directly to the rear of the bag 400, for example if the width of the inner panel 412 is narrower than the width of the outer panel 410. The inner panel 412 and the outer panel 410 can be made of the same material as the bag, or they can be made of different materials. For example, the inner panel 412 and the outer panel 410 can be made of fabric, canvas, or a waterproof rubber-based material. The inner panel 412 and the outer panel 410 can be reinforced with strands.
[0022] The luggage handle sleeve allows the bag to be attached to and detached from a luggage (e.g., suitcase) handle 600 by threading the luggage (e.g., suitcase) handle 600 through and out of the sleeve 480. When the handle 600 is present, the pocket 414 is in a collapsed state. The collapsed state of the pocket may secure the contents of the pocket, for example, to make it less likely for the contents to slip out or for someone to easily reach in and remove the contents. The pocket 414 is hidden by the sleeve 480.
[0023] The sleeve 480 includes magnetic closures 420, 422. The magnetic closures 420, 422 are configured to disconnect when a luggage handle is passed through the sleeve, and to reconnect when the luggage handle is removed from the sleeve. At least one magnet or ferromagnetic material may be located along or just below the top edge of each panel 410, 412. For ease of explanation, the magnetic closures 420, 422 are described as magnets, but any ferromagnetic material is contemplated for use in any manner. Suitable magnets include flat magnets, bar magnets, disc magnets, and the like. The magnets on the outer panel 410 and the inner panel 412 are aligned to correspond to each other and are aligned to close the outer panel 410 and the inner panel 412 at the top. For example, 2 to 10 magnets corresponding to each other can be provided on each panel.
[0024] In certain examples, the magnets or ferromagnetic material may be permanently secured to the outer panel (first panel) 410 and the inner panel (second panel) 412. Such securing may be accomplished by one or more of adhesives, welding (e.g., RF welding), stitching, molding (in-mold molding), and the like. These connection methods may be used alone or in combination. It is also contemplated that one or more storage pockets may be formed in a suitable material, such as a panel forming material, and the magnets may be secured to the panels using the connection methods described herein, alone or in combination with the storage pockets. It is also contemplated that other non-permanent connections, such as hook-and-loop fasteners, clasps, screws, friction fits, ball joints, and the like, may be used to secure the magnets or ferromagnetic material to the first panel 410 and the second panel 412.
[0025] Alternatively, one or both panels may have a magnetic or ferromagnetic strip extending between the sides of the panels, and the other or both panels may have at least one magnet or ferromagnetic material, or a plurality of magnets or ferromagnetic materials sandwiched or embedded within the magnetic strip, or magnetic or ferromagnetic particles sandwiched or embedded within the strip. FIGS. 4A-4C show alternative exemplary magnetic strip 422 configurations. FIG. 4A shows that there may be two long magnetic strips, one on each panel, corresponding between the panels. In one example, the two strips 422 shown in FIG. 4A may extend along the length of each panel or partially along the length of each panel. FIG. 4B shows that a relatively long magnetic strip 422 may be provided on one of the first and second panels, and two relatively short magnetic strips 422 may be provided on the opposite panel. FIG. 4C shows that two relatively short magnetic strips 422 can be provided on each of the first and second panels. In this arrangement, the shapes and sizes of the magnetic strips 422 can correspond to each other. In the above example, the magnets can be rectangular. However, magnets of any shape are contemplated. For example, the magnets can be square, round, button-shaped, or oval. For example, the short magnets shown in FIGS. 4B and 4C can be replaced with round or oval magnets.
[0026] FIG. 5A and schematic diagrams 5B1-5E show details of a bag having a luggage handle loop (sleeve) with a hidden pocket hidden in the sleeve. FIG. 5A shows a bag 500 similar to the bag shown in FIG. 4, with a luggage loop (sleeve) 580 attached to the bag 500. FIG. 5B1 is a side view of the outer panel (first panel) 510 and the inner panel (second panel) 512. FIG. 5B2 is an exploded side view of the outer panel (first panel) 510 and the inner panel (second panel) 512.
[0027] The bottom and sides of the second panel 512 may be attached to the back of the bag to form a pocket 514. Such pocket 514 may be hidden, utilizing the inner panel 512 to define the interior walls of the pocket 514. The pocket 514 may include closures such as zippers, "velcro", snaps, buttons, or magnets, and any combination thereof. It is also contemplated that the material forming the pocket 514 may have some elasticity to allow the pocket 514 to be closed in an uneven manner.
[0028] 5B1 and 5B2 show the state where handle 530 is inserted into the sleeve and penetrates the sleeve. A magnet 520 is attached to the upper end or near the upper end of outer panel 510, and a magnet 522 is attached to the upper end or near the upper end of inner panel 512. When the handle is not present, magnets 520 and 522 are connected in a state where they are aligned with each other. Then, when handle 530 is inserted from the lower end of the sleeve and pushed between panels 510 and 512, the magnets are disconnected by the force of the handle. When the handle is pulled down, the magnets are reconnected and the upper end of the sleeve is closed.
[0029] FIG. 5C illustrates an exterior panel 510 that may be formed with a foam layer 540. The foam layer 540 may provide cushioning and shock absorption at the bag's passage points to protect the contents within the bag. The top edge of the foam layer 540 may be sandwiched between two layers of material 542. The two layers of material may hold at least one panel-side magnet 520 or ferromagnetic material. The magnet 520 is located at or near the top edge of the foam panel 540. The magnet 520 may be embedded in the foam or may be attached to the foam panel. The material layer is attached to the foam by any suitable means, such as stitching or adhesive.
[0030] 5D1 and 5D2 show a foam layer 544 disposed at or near the top of the inner panel 512. A magnet 522 is disposed in the foam layer 544. The magnet 520 may be embedded in the foam or attached to the foam layer and secured to the foam layer 544 by any method described herein. The magnet 522 may be covered by a membrane or fabric layer 546. The membrane or fabric layer may be attached to the foam by any suitable means, such as welding, stitching, adhesives, or the like.
[0031] It is also contemplated that other non-permanent connections may be used to secure the panels together, such as hook and loop fasteners, clasps, screws, friction fits, ball joints, etc. Such non-permanent connections may be used in combination and may also be used in combination with the magnetic connections and variations thereof described herein.
[0032] It is also contemplated that in the examples described in the description of Figures 5A to 5E, one or both panels may have a magnetic or ferromagnetic strip extending between both sides of the panel, and the other or both panels may have at least one magnet or ferromagnetic material, or a plurality of magnets or ferromagnetic materials sandwiched or embedded within the magnetic strip, or magnetic or ferromagnetic particles sandwiched or embedded within the strip.
[0033] It is also contemplated that the inner panels 412, 512 do not necessarily have to be separate structures, but can be part of the bag itself.
[0034] In this example, the bag may have at least two sides, a front, a rear defining side walls, a base, and a storage space having an opening. The opening may be configured to allow access to the storage space. The bag may have at least one strap or handle. An outer surface of the side walls may include a panel having a first side, a second side, and a top end. The panel and the side walls may form a sleeve by attaching the first side and the second side of the panel to the outer surface of the side walls. The sleeve may be configured to allow a luggage handle to pass through the sleeve from a lower end thereof and out of an upper end thereof. The panel and the top end of the side walls may together form a magnetic closure. The magnetic closure is configured to disconnect when the luggage handle is passed through the sleeve and reconnect when the luggage handle is removed from the sleeve.
[0035] The magnetic opening and closing device can include at least one panel-side magnet or ferromagnetic material attached to the upper end of the panel and at least one side-wall-side magnet or ferromagnetic material attached to a corresponding area of the side wall, and the at least one side-wall-side magnet can be configured to be attracted to the at least one panel-side magnet. The at least one panel-side magnet attached to the upper end of the panel can be at least one strip-shaped magnetic piece, and can include 2 to 5 strip-shaped magnetic pieces.
[0036] The panel may also include at least one panel-side foam strip. The panel-side foam strip may be provided at an upper end of the panel so as to extend between both sides of the panel. At least one panel-side magnet or ferromagnetic material may also be embedded in the at least one panel-side foam strip. The at least one panel-side foam strip may be sandwiched between two layers of material, and the at least one panel-side magnet or ferromagnetic material may be held by the two layers of material.
[0037] The side wall may also include at least one foam strip. The foam strip may be provided in a corresponding area of the side wall, and at least one magnet or ferromagnetic material may be embedded in the at least one foam strip. The magnetic opening and closing device is configured to automatically reconnect the handle when the handle is removed from the sleeve by magnetic force. An opening and closing device may also be provided to close the storage space.
[0038] In another example where the inner panel is part of the bag itself, the bag may have at least two sides, a front, a rear defining a side wall, and a storage space having an opening. The opening may be configured to allow access to the storage space, and the bag may include at least one strap or handle. The bag may include a first panel on an outer surface of the side wall. The first panel may have a first side, a second side, and a top end, and the first side and the second side of the first panel may be attached to the outer surface of the side wall to form a sleeve. The sleeve may be configured to allow a luggage handle to pass through the sleeve from a lower end and out of an upper end of the sleeve. The sleeve may include a pocket configured to accommodate one or more items therein. The sleeve may include a magnetic closure configured to disconnect when the luggage handle is passed through the sleeve and reconnect when the luggage handle is removed from the sleeve.
[0039] In one example, a pocket can be formed by attaching a layer to the first panel, and the magnetic opening and closing device can include at least one first panel magnet or ferromagnetic material attached to the upper end of the first panel and at least one side wall magnet or ferromagnetic material attached to a corresponding area of the side wall, and the at least one side wall magnet can be configured to be attracted to the at least one first panel magnet. The at least one first panel magnet attached to the upper end of the first panel can be at least one strip-shaped magnetic piece, and the at least one second panel magnet can include 2 to 5 strip-shaped magnetic pieces. The first panel can also include at least one strip-shaped foam piece. The strip-shaped foam piece can be provided at the upper end of the first panel so as to extend between the first surface and the second surface of the second panel. The at least one first panel magnet or ferromagnetic material can also be embedded in the at least one strip-shaped foam piece.
[0040] FIG. 6A shows a secondary bag design with a sleeve. For example, a luggage handle can be inserted at the bottom end 64 of the sleeve, threaded through the sleeve, and out at the top end 62 of the sleeve. FIG. 6B shows a close-up of the top end 62 of the sleeve with the magnet 66 when in the open position. FIG. 7A shows a duffel bag design with a similar sleeve with a bottom end 74 and a top end 72. FIG. 7B shows a close-up of the top end 72 of the sleeve when in the open position. FIG. 8A shows a tote bag design with a similar sleeve with a bottom end 84 and a top end 82. FIG. 8B shows a close-up of the top end 82 of the sleeve with the magnet 86 when in the open position.
[0041] In any of the embodiments described herein, the strength of the magnets should be sufficient to hold the sleeve closed when not in use and allow relatively easy insertion of a handle (e.g., a suitcase handle). For example, the magnets can be strong enough and appropriately positioned to prevent accidental insertion of an object such as a phone into the sleeve, which may result in the object being lost. For example, magnets placed only at the ends of the sleeve do not prevent accidental insertion of an object from the middle. Furthermore, if the magnets are not strong enough, an object may be accidentally pushed between the magnets, causing the object to fall out of the sleeve and become lost or damaged. The magnets should be strong enough to alert a person to the accidental insertion of an object.
[0042] Any suitable magnet of any shape, size, and strength can be used. Rare earth magnets and neodymium magnets are about 2-7 times stronger than regular magnets and ferrite magnets. All neodymium magnets are graded according to the material they are made of. Generally, the higher the grade (the higher the number following the "N") the stronger the magnet. The highest grade neodymium magnet currently available is N52, and the lowest grade neodymium magnet is N35. A suitable magnet for use in the present disclosure is, for example, N45. In the case of disc magnets, any suitable radius can be used. In the case of rectangular magnets, any suitable length can be used, for example, 1-5 cm long, for example, 1.5 cm long or 2.5 cm long. An exemplary magnet can be a rectangular N45 nickel magnet about 2 cm long.
[0043] Pairs of sew-on magnets are also available, marked with a "+" and a "-" symbol. Sew-on magnets can be sewn into the hem or cuff of fabric so that they are not visible in the finished product. Magnets are also available enclosed in a plastic cover, which allows the magnet to be sewn into the fabric.
[0044] FIG. 9 shows the magnet 610 being encapsulated or sewn onto the strip 612. The strip 612 can be woven or non-woven or any other suitable material such as plastic. The magnet 610 is placed onto the first strip 612. The second strip 614 is then placed onto the first strip 612. The second strip is then attached to the first strip by any suitable means such as sewing, adhesive, stapling, etc. For example, in FIG. 9, the second strip 614 is attached to the first strip by sewing a seam 616 around the magnet 610. The remaining portion of the unattached strip 614 can be left unattached or can be cut off or attached to the strip 612 by adhesive or stitching. The strip 612 can have one or more magnets along its length. For example, a strip can include 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 magnets. The strip can then be sewn to the top of a sleeve as described above. A corresponding strip can then be sewn to the bag, aligning the magnets on the strip so that the magnets attract each other to close the top of the sleeve.
[0045] Some magnets, especially those with corners or sharp edges, can pinch and eventually damage the fabric strip, especially if the strip is made of thin or poor quality fabric. To make the bag last longer, the fabric used to encapsulate the magnets should be of higher quality and more durable. Similarly, the quality of the thread and stitching used to encapsulate the magnets can also affect the lifespan of the bag.
[0046] The magnets can also be in the form of strip magnets or magnetic tapes, which can be cut to the desired length for use. However, such strip magnets or magnetic tapes, although thin and flexible, usually do not have a strong magnetic force. An example of a strip magnet is a strip magnet made of ferromagnetic powder and rubber.
[0047] A sufficient number of magnet pairs must be used to prevent gaps. For example, using only one pair of magnets in the center of the opening (sleeve) may result in gaps between the magnets and the edge of the sleeve. To prevent such gaps, a sufficient number of magnet pairs must be provided along the opening to maintain the appearance of flush surfaces. For example, at least two pairs, at least three pairs, or at least four or more magnet pairs can be used.
