Description

Detailed Description of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to the use of a blend of sugars including psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose to inhibit discoloration of vitamin B12 in an aqueous composition. The present invention further relates to an aqueous composition comprising said blend, vitamin B12 and one or more preservatives selected from phenoxyethanol, (ethyl)hexylglycerin and / or 1,2-alkanediols.

[0002] Vitamin B12, also known as cyanocobalamin, is a common cosmetic ingredient used to soothe sensitive and stressed skin and treat itchy, rough, inflamed, red and cracked skin. Vitamin B12 has been reported to help prevent photodamaged skin and protect the skin barrier damage caused by, for example, inflammation. In addition, vitamin B12 plays an important role in promoting cell recovery and regeneration, thereby making skin look more vibrant. In addition, vitamin B12 imparts a beautiful and pleasant pink color to cosmetics.

[0003] However, vitamin B12 has a tendency to discolor during storage in aqueous compositions, which gives the respective product an unpleasant (often brownish) appearance, which is highly undesirable.

[0004] According to the present invention, it has now surprisingly been found that the addition of a blend of sugars comprising psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose can effectively reduce discoloration of aqueous compositions containing vitamin B12, said effect being particularly pronounced in aqueous compositions further comprising phenoxyethanol, (ethyl)hexylglycerin and / or 1,2-alkanediol.

[0005] Thus, in a first embodiment, the present invention relates to the use of a blend of sugars (herein also described as sugar blend) comprising psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose (Sugar Blend A) to inhibit discoloration in an aqueous composition comprising vitamin B 12. Preferably, said aqueous composition further comprises one or more preservatives selected from the group consisting of phenoxyethanol, (ethyl)hexylglycerin and 1,2-alkanediols.

[0006] In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a method for reducing discoloration of vitamin B12 in an aqueous composition, said method comprising mixing vitamin B12, a sugar blend comprising psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose, and water to prepare an aqueous composition, to obtain a composition having a reduced tendency of discoloration caused by vitamin B12, compared to a composition not comprising said sugar blend. The method preferably comprises storing each composition for at least 1 week, more preferably at least 2 weeks, most preferably at least 4 weeks, such as 6 weeks, preferably at room temperature (i.e. about 22°C) or 50°C. Even more preferably, said aqueous composition further comprises one or more preservatives selected from the group consisting of phenoxyethanol, (ethyl)hexylglycerin and 1,2-alkanediols, which preservatives are also mixed into the aqueous composition.

[0007] In a further aspect, the present invention relates to the use of a combination of vitamin B12 and a sugar blend comprising psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose, preferably in combination with one or more preservatives selected from the group consisting of phenoxyethanol, (ethyl)hexylglycerin and 1,2-alkanediols, for the preparation of a storage-stable (i.e. color-stable) composition. This composition exhibits excellent storage stability in terms of preventing / inhibiting discoloration caused by vitamin B12. The composition may be prepared by mixing vitamin B12, a sugar blend comprising psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose, preferably in combination with one or more preservatives selected from the group consisting of phenoxyethanol, (ethyl)hexylglycerin and 1,2-alkanediols, and water. It is well understood that psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose may be added as single components or as a premix containing all of psicose, mannose, fructose and glucose. Preferably, in all embodiments of the present invention, the sugar blend is added in the form of a premix, more preferably in the form of an aqueous premix as outlined below.

The amount of oily phase in such an O / W emulsion is preferably at least 10% by weight, more preferably in the range of 10-60% by weight, most preferably in the range of 15-50% by weight, for example in the range of 15-40% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0072] Preferably, the cosmetic composition according to the invention further comprises at least one fatty alcohol (co-emulsifier), such as in particular cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol and / or behenyl alcohol. The total amount of the one or several fatty alcohols for the topical composition according to the invention is preferably chosen in the range of about 0.1 to 10.0% by weight, in particular in the range of about 0.5 to 6.0% by weight, relative to the total weight of the topical composition.

[0073] Preferably, the topical composition according to the invention comprises a thickener to help achieve the appropriate consistency of the product, especially when the topical composition is in the form of an emulsion. Preferred thickeners are aluminum silicate, xanthan gum, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, polyacrylates such as carbopolea (e.g. Carbopole 980, 981, 1382, 2984, 5984) or mixtures thereof. Further preferred thickeners include acrylic acid / C10-30 alkyl acrylate copolymers (e.g. Pemulen TR 1, Pemulen TR 2, Carbopol 1328, etc. by NOVEON) and Aristoflex AVC (INCI: Ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate / VP copolymer).

[0074] The cosmetic composition according to the invention advantageously comprises one or more preservatives, if present, preferably used in an amount ranging from 0.1 to 2% by weight, more preferably from 0.5 to 1.5% by weight, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0075] Cosmetic compositions according to the present invention generally have a pH in the range of 3 to 10, preferably a pH in the range of 4 to 8, most preferably a pH in the range of 4 to 7.5, for example a pH in the range of 5 to 6.5. The pH can be readily adjusted as required according to standard methods in the art, for example with a suitable acid such as citric acid or a base such as sodium hydroxide (for example as an aqueous solution), triethanolamine (TEA Care), tromethamine (Trizma Base) and aminomethylpropanol (AMP-Ultra PC2000).

[0076] The amount of the cosmetic composition applied to the skin is not critical and can be easily adjusted by a person skilled in the art. Preferably, the amount is selected in the range of 0.1-3 mg / cm2 of skin, for example, preferably in the range of 0.1-2 mg / cm2 of skin, most preferably in the range of 0.5-2 mg / cm2 of skin.

[0077] The following examples are provided to further illustrate the compositions and effects of the present invention. These examples are illustrative only and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention in any way.

[0078] [Example] The formulations shown in Tables 1-3 were prepared and stored in clear glass vials at 50°C (accelerated stability test conditions). The color stability of vitamin B12 was evaluated by measuring the a-value (L*a*b*value / CIELAB system) initially and after 2 or 6 weeks (the lower the a-value, the greater the discoloration, i.e., fading of the red-pinkish color of vitamin B12).

[0079] The aqueous sugar premix used was prepared by isomerizing plant-derived glucose as described above and contained approximately 25% glucose, 15% fructose, 2% mannose, 2.5% psicose and 50% water.

[0080] All component amounts are listed as weight percent.

[0081] [Table 1]

[0082] [Table 2]

[0083] [Table 3]

[0084] As can be drawn from the results shown in Tables 1, 2 and 3 above, the mixture of saccharides according to the present invention best protects the red-pink color of vitamin B12 upon storage, with psicose alone showing only a slight stabilizing effect at relatively high concentrations.
