Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] Cross-reference This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 354,514, filed Jun. 22, 2022, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.
Background Art
[0002] Washing hair and the scalp is a common grooming practice that is considered important for optimal hair cleanliness, health, and maintenance. Hair cleansing agents typically remove sebum, sweat, exfoliated cutin, and environmental dirt and help prevent the onset of conditions such as folliculitis and seborrheic dermatitis. Currently commercially available formulations use synthetic detergents, technically referred to as "surfactant systems," formulated in various amounts and ratios to achieve a desired level of detergency. The beauty industry offers consumers numerous options for facilitating normal hair washing, including formulations containing a wide variety of ingredients and compositions.
[0003] In addition to removing sebum, sweat, exfoliated cutin, and environmental dirt, a secondary function of shampoo is to impart desired sensory effects to the hair. Hair that has been thoroughly washed, i.e., hair that is completely free of sebum and product, tends to have a feel that lacks smoothness and appears duller, and as a result is not typically considered cosmetically desirable. One strategy for addressing this problem is to incorporate a number of conditioners into the cleansing agent. These conditioners typically deposit on the hair surface and only modify the properties of the hair surface (improving the appearance and feel of the hair), and do not address fundamental damage to the hair structure. When these conditioning agents deposit excessively, especially in combination with insufficient washing, the conditioner can accumulate within the hair, weighing it down and making it appear duller. Accordingly, there is a need for a new hair cleansing agent composition that cleans the hair without excessive deposition of the conditioning agent and provides desired hair properties.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0020] The fiber structure of human hair consists of the cuticle, cortex, and medulla. The cuticle consists of overlapping thin cell layers like a scale structure and protects the central part inside the hair known as the cortex. Cuticle cells are mechanically strong due to the high isodipeptide and disulfide bonds present in their individual lamellar layers and are resistant to many environmental factors such as the penetration of external molecules. The cuticle accounts for approximately 15% of the weight of a single hair. The cortex is the middle region of the hair and accounts for about 80% of the weight of a single hair. The cortex is composed of a hierarchical structure of elongated fibrous alpha-helical keratin that extends along the fiber axis embedded in an amorphous protein matrix. It is the cortex with a structure consisting of intertwined protein fibers and a supporting matrix that gives the hair its tensile properties (strength, stiffness). The cell membrane complex binds cuticle cells to other cuticle cells, cortex cells to other cortex cells, and cuticle and cortex cells. The medulla corresponds to a centrally located, thin cell-connected beam and is absent in some hair fibers.
[0021] Human hair contains approximately 65% - 95% protein. Proteins exhibit their active properties within a specific temperature and pH range, but can unfold beyond these limits. The thermal denaturation of fibrous hard alpha-keratin proteins, i.e., the cortex proteins involved in hair strength and stiffness, shows a significant increase in stability when treated with low pH solutions. This is particularly true for hair damaged by oxidation such as bleaching, and when quantified by DSC, it is proven by a significant increase in the enthalpy and peak temperature of thermal denaturation. Enthalpy is generally understood to reflect the amount and structural integrity of alpha-helical substances within the intermediate diameter filaments (IF) of hair, while the peak temperature reflects the cross-link density of the matrix in which the IF is embedded. This phenomenon is further supported by amino acid analysis, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and observation of tensile strength.
[0022] Alkaline pH creates a favorable environment for, among other things, the cleavage of cystine (disulfide), the hydrolysis of amide bonds, and the formation of lanthionine and lysinoalanine, all of which weaken the protein structure of hair. Although the thermal stability does not vary significantly depending on the time hair is exposed to a solution of a specific pH, when combined with the fact that the pH of tap water varies widely from neutral to alkaline, it is suggested that a negative effect can be experienced during the time hair is reasonably expected to be exposed during standard washing conditions.
[0023] Differences in the thermal stability of hair proteins exposed to different pHs have been observed, which are attributed to changes in the environment of the intermediate diameter filaments, i.e., the interface between the IF and the surrounding matrix proteins. The scaffold-like IF surface is created by side-chain interactions that anchor the filaments to the matrix. Strong adsorption of protons to the IF interface can help protect this interface, and in addition to disulfide bonds, the electrostatic force further stabilizes this region.
[0024] During washing, the hydrogen bonds that stabilize the protein structure by water molecules are broken in hair, so that it becomes structurally fragile. As a result, swelling occurs in specific parts of the cuticle, and the hair fiber becomes more susceptible to damage. Furthermore, it has been established that the swelling behavior of the hair cuticle strongly depends on pH, and the more alkaline the environment is, the greater the degree of swelling becomes. Apart from the influence on thermal stability, this modification due to the swelling of the cuticle by pH is closely related to the characteristics of hair and the tendency of damage directly related to consumers. When the cuticle swells, the friction force between hair fibers increases, resulting in an increase in tangling and a rough touch. Also, when hair is wet, it is in a fragile state, and in wet hair, the combination of an increased unnecessary combing force and a decreased breaking stress can easily lead to peeling of the cuticle, protein loss, and even serious split ends during hair washing or shampooing. The minimal swelling of the cuticle shown at an acidic pH can help offset this effect.
[0025] The proteins in hair are in an optimal state (structurally most elastic) around pH 5. Such a more acidic pH environment can also minimize excessive swelling of the cuticle, reduce protein loss, maintain hair color, and minimize electrostatic repulsion. This is also the ideal pH range for skin with an acidic mantle. Skin with a disrupted pH may experience barrier disruption, inflammation, and irritation. The pH of tap water varies significantly from 6.5 to 9.53 and may contain metal ions such as divalent calcium and magnesium (hard water minerals) that affect the texture of hair, as well as trace transition metals such as copper, iron, nickel, lead, and others that can contribute to the oxidative degradation of hair fibers.
[0026] Furthermore, the peptides can be used to treat hair damaged during washing. These peptides can interact with hair mainly through covalent (disulfide) bonds, polar bonds, and hydrophobic interactions. However, for the success of the treatment, it is necessary to penetrate the peptides into the cortex of the hair, but penetration can be difficult. Molecular size and polarity play a major role in determining the ability of a molecule to gain access to the inside of the fibrous structure. Furthermore, the presence of sebum or products on the hair hinders the ability of the peptides to move well into the cortex. As noted above, at an appropriate acidic pH, it helps to stabilize the protein structure of the hair, but these peptides can act complementarily and synergistically to provide further reinforcement. Taken together, this structure provides both protection and repair of the protein structure of the hair, which can become brittle during the washing process.
[0027] Accordingly, the present specification provides a hair cleansing composition having an optimized pH that reduces swelling and protein loss. By formulating the shampoo at a more acidic pH, this alkaline pH environment can be neutralized, which can help minimize the net negative charge of the hair protein, thereby minimizing cuticle swelling and reducing the binding sites for dissolved metal cations. The presence of protective agents such as skin softeners, occlusive agents, cationic agents, and polymers on the hair fiber minimizes friction and related styling damage and provides a barrier against heat, UV, and contaminants, but if the products accumulate excessively, the hair can be weighted down and inhibited, or additional products can similarly interfere with their function. The hair composition may include peptides that strengthen the protein structure within the hair cortex and restore the tensile strength of the hair fiber. These peptides may not be compatible with conventional conditioning agents that form a film or coating, which can prevent the peptides from interacting with the hair protein and, in particular, from entering the cortex.
[0028] In some embodiments, the hair cleansing composition described herein includes low molecular weight peptides that can penetrate the hair cortex and improve the mechanical properties of the hair. [0057] Detergent The hair cleansing compositions described herein include one or more detergents that are useful for cleansing the hair but do not remove or replace any essential oils. In some embodiments, the hair cleansing composition includes one or more detergents selected from anionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, nonionic surfactants, biosurfactants, and any combination thereof.
[0058] Surfactants, to be cosmetically acceptable, must in addition to being efficient detergents, provide a good foaming profile and a stable rheology. Anionic surfactants tend to be considered high performance in these areas, but consumer perception of the most efficient class conventionally used (i.e., sulfates) has made anionic surfactants difficult to accept. This restricts the selection of suitable surfactants, but it should also be noted that ionic tolerance is a further limiting factor, and as noted above, many surfactants tend to be neutral or alkaline, while acidic compositions require performance and stability at low pH and potentially in hard water. Sulfonates, particularly alkylsulfonates or olefin sulfonates, are one class of examples that meet certain criteria. These surfactants exhibit particularly good synergistic effects with alpha-hydroxy acids or salicylic acid.
[0059] However, single surfactant systems often lack one aspect or another, and it is preferable to utilize formulations. Amphoteric surfactants impart softness and improve the functional profile. Hydroxysultaine has a significantly low irritation profile, improving the mildness of surfactant formulations while enhancing foaming and stability and achieving lower total surfactant levels. This is another important criterion in formulations for protecting the skin barrier of the scalp. Hydroxysultaine also exhibits significantly broad pH and electrolyte tolerance and becomes an excellent detergent in combination with hard water and acidic components. Amino acid-derived surfactants can clean while moisturizing the skin or conditioning the hair and represent yet another exemplary option. These surfactants can be used daily on hair or skin when properly formulated. Finally, biosurfactants may be more sustainable raw materials and represent yet another type of high-performance detergent molecule that retains the further benefit of being environmentally compatible, having improved biodegradability, or being more environmentally friendly to manufacture.
[0060] In some embodiments, the one or more detergents are sodium methyl 2-sulfolaurate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, disodium 2-sulfolaurate, alkylbenzene sulfonic acid, ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium xylene sulfonate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, sodium 2-sulfolaurate, sodium myreth sulfate, sodium xylene sulfonate, sodium olefin (C 14-16 ) sulfonate, sodium alpha olefin (C 14-16 ) sulfonate, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate, sodium cocoyl methyl taurate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauryl isethionate, sodium cocoyl sarcosinate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, sodium myristoyl sarcosinate, lauroyl sarcosine, cocoyl sarcosine, myristoyl sarcosine, oleoyl sarcosine, myristoyl / stearoyl sarcosine, sodium lauroyl glutamate, sodium cocoyl glutamate, disodium cocoyl glutamate, cocoyl glutamate, lauroyl glutamate, potassium cocoyl glutamate, potassium lauroyl glutamate, potassium myristoyl glutamate, sodium myristoyl glutamate, sodium stearoyl glutamate, disodium stearoyl glutamate, sodium palmoyl glutamate, sodium lauroyl lactate, sodium astrocaryum murumuru lipid fatty acid, sodium lauryl glucoside hydroxypropylsulfonate, disodium lauryl glucoside hydroxypropyl citrate, sodium hydroxypropylsulfonate / lauroyl glucoside copolymer, sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate, and an anionic surfactant selected from any combination thereof.

Example
[0095] The following examples are included for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.
[0096] Example 1. Preparation of Hair Shampoo Exemplary hair shampoo compositions are presented in Tables 2 to 6. The exemplary hair shampoo compositions are produced by conventional compounding and mixing techniques or by mixing one or more polyols (such as glycerin), water, and a surfactant with any solid that needs to be heated and melted at a high temperature. These components are thoroughly mixed at a high temperature and then cooled to ambient temperature. Further components are added to the cooled product. Unless otherwise specified, the amounts described are intended to reflect the weight percentages of the active materials.

[0102] Example 2. Evaluation of the Efficacy of Hair Shampoo During and After Washing A hair shampoo composition is prepared according to Example 1. The hair shampoo composition is evaluated using an investigation for determining the sensory effects of the hair shampoo on gloss, texture (i.e., slipperiness), stiffness, and firmness. The sensory effects are evaluated during washing and after drying.
[0103] Gently rinse a human hair bundle with a length of 25 cm, a width of 5.5 cm, and a weight of 10 g in warm water at 40°C. Remove excess water, and thoroughly lather the hair bundle for about 1 minute using 1.5 g of the hair shampoo composition per 10 g of the hair bundle. Conduct a sensory evaluation on the lathered hair and determine its slipperiness. The evaluation is performed by 20 people, and the total value of the evaluation is shown. The evaluation criteria are 4: glide well, 3: glide slightly, 2: do not glide well, and 1: do not glide.
[0104] Gently rinse a human hair bundle with a length of 25 cm, a width of 5.5 cm, and a weight of 10 g in warm water at 40°C. Remove excess water, and thoroughly lather the hair bundle for about 1 minute using 1.5 g of the hair shampoo composition per 10 g of the hair bundle. Rinse the lathered hair with running water at 40°C (2 L / min) for 1 minute. Remove excess moisture using a towel and air-dry the hair bundle. After drying, conduct a sensory evaluation on the dried hair and determine its gloss and coherence. The evaluation is performed by 20 people, and the total value of the evaluation is shown. The evaluation criteria are 4: good, 3: slightly good, 2: not very good, and 1: not good.
[0105] Thoroughly rinse a human hair bundle with a length of 25 cm, a width of 5.5 cm, and a weight of 10 g in warm water at 40°C. Thoroughly lather the hair bundle for about 1 minute using 5 g or 10 g of a hair cleansing composition. Thoroughly rinse the lathered hair with running water at 40°C (2 L / min). Remove excess moisture using a towel and dry the hair bundle with warm air from a hair dryer. After drying, perform a sensory evaluation on the dried hair to determine its stiffness. The evaluation is conducted by 25 people and shows the total value of the evaluation. The evaluation criteria are as follows: 4: A significant improvement in stiffness is observed; 3: An improvement in stiffness and firmness is observed; 2: A slight improvement in stiffness is observed; 1: No improvement in stiffness; and 0: Stiffness disappears.
[0106] Example 3. Evaluation of the effectiveness of a cleansing agent using FTIR Samples of bleached hair may be collected. A part of the sample of bleached hair may be treated with the hair cleansing composition described in this specification. For both the treated sample and the untreated sample, prepare cross-sections using a cryostat and examine the cross-sections using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Use this technique to generate hyperspectral images and use these to visualize the lipid content inside the hair fiber, assess the hair damage (i.e., chemical treatment or UV exposure) inside the hair fiber, identify the modification of the hair structure (i.e., the three-dimensional structure of proteins or the organization of lipids), evaluate the hair moisture (i.e., the water content), visualize the active penetration inside the hair fiber, and determine the effectiveness of the cleansing agent for removing sebum and products from the hair.
[0107] Both single fibers of the treated sample and the untreated sample may be scanned longitudinally using ATR-FTIR, which can provide infrared images of approximately 1 to 2 microns outside the fiber surface. Using these hyperspectral images, determine the lipid content in the cuticle, examine the hair damage (i.e., chemical treatment or UV exposure) along the fiber, analyze the deposition of active ingredients along the hair fiber, identify the modification of the hair structure (i.e., the three-dimensional structure of proteins or the organization of lipids), evaluate the hair moisture (i.e., the water content), and determine the effectiveness of the cleansing agent for removing sebum and products from the hair.
