AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Cancer cells develop resistance to anti-cancer therapeutics due to impaired tumor suppressor protein function, often caused by elevated levels of metals leading to abnormal protein folding, rendering current treatments ineffective.

Method used

The use of chelating agents, such as DMPS or DMSA, to bind and remove excess metals, thereby restoring the function of tumor suppressor proteins like p53, making cancer cells sensitive to anti-cancer agents again.

Benefits of technology

Chelation therapy effectively reverses chemoresistance by refolding impaired tumor suppressor proteins, enhancing the effectiveness of anti-cancer treatments.

Abstract

The present invention provides a chelating agent for use in a method of treating cancer, wherein the cancer has resistance to an anticancer therapeutic agent. Further, the present invention provides a method of sensitizing a subject for anticancer treatment and / or neutralizing resistance to an anticancer therapeutic agent, preferably a method of restoring or reactivating a tumor suppressor protein function impaired due to abnormal tumor suppressor protein folding, and provides a chelating agent for use in the method. The present invention also provides a pharmaceutical composition comprising 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid (DMPS) or DMSA, preferably miaDMSA, and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein DMPS is present in a dose of 40 to 12,000 mg.
