Description

[Technical Field]

[0001] FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to medical instruments, and more particularly to holders for medical instruments. [Background technology]

[0002] Medical devices inserted into a patient's body must be kept sterile and intact before insertion. Devices such as guidewires and catheters are often left on the patient or in a sterile field before use or during intermittent use. Traditionally, moist sterile towels are used to secure these devices and prevent them from falling or sliding off the patient. This covering prevents users (e.g., healthcare professionals) from seeing the devices and knowing which devices are stored in which locations. Additionally, during insertion and use, users often need another person to hold the unused portions of the device to prevent them from falling to the floor.

[0003] When stored in a procedure room with other sterile instruments, wires and instruments may be grouped together in a bucket to prevent them from falling onto the floor. Because various sizes and types of guidewires may be used during a procedure and can be stored together, it can be difficult to distinguish which wire is which when preparing equipment for a procedure. Additionally, wires are typically twisted within a coil after being wound to prevent them from coming apart, preventing any or all of the wire from falling onto the non-sterile floor, which would otherwise require wire replacement and add cost to the procedure.

[0004] The present application addresses these and other challenges associated with holding or housing medical devices for insertion into a patient. Summary of the Invention

[0047] The present application describes a holder for a medical cylinder. The present application further describes a method of operating a holder for a medical cylinder and a kit including a holder for a medical cylinder such as a guide wire or a catheter. The holder for a medical cylinder of the present application can be made of, for example, plastic or metal and can include first and second outer members each having a connecting member firmly attached to each other. Each outer member includes an inner surface and an outer surface. In one or more embodiments, the first and second outer members can be, for example, circular, square, elliptical, or polygonal.

[0048] The first and second outer members each include a peripheral edge, at least a part of the first outer member is located in a first plane, and at least a part of the second outer member is located in a second plane. In one or more embodiments, the outer member is a structure having a surface area and a thickness, and the thickness is smaller than the surface area. In one or more embodiments, the outer member can have a varying height, width, diameter, and / or thickness (i.e., non-uniform) along its length. The two outer members may have matching dimensions or, in certain embodiments, may have varying dimensions.

[0049] A core structure can be extended between the first and second outer members at a position inside the peripheries of the first and second outer members. In one or more embodiments, the core can be integrated with the first and / or second outer members. In at least one embodiment, the core can be coupled to the first and second outer members. In at least one embodiment, the core can include a first connecting member coupled to the first outer member and a second connecting member coupled to the second outer member, and each connecting member can be configured to firmly couple to each other. The first and second outer members can be oriented such that their inner surfaces face each other around the core, and the first and second planes are generally parallel and spaced apart.

[0050] In one or more embodiments, the first outer member can include, for example, a cylindrical body held by a related medical procedure and / or medical device, holder, or a surface configured to be written on to record information such as information related to the patient. In at least one other embodiment, the first outer member can include a label for entering information thereon. The second outer member can include an adhesive on its outer surface configured to be removably attached to a surgical drape of the patient. The holder can further include at least one holding member formed of a material softer than the outer member (e.g., a compressible material), and the holding member can be formed of a material such as a plastic foam, an open-cell plastic material or a closed-cell plastic material, or other soft polymer, and the at least one holding member is disposed between the inner surfaces of the first and second outer members. For example, the holding member can be disposed on at least a part of one or both of the inner surfaces of the first and second outer members, or all of the inner surfaces.

[0051] In one or more embodiments, attachment of the first and second outer members to each other defines a space for holding an elongate medical instrument between the two holding members. In at least one embodiment, attachment of the first and second outer members causes the two holding members to contact each other. In one or more embodiments, the outer members both taper from an edge of the outer surface to a point on the inner surface (e.g., an edge of the inner surface) to define an annular funnel, whereby the holder can more readily receive and capture an elongate medical instrument therein. And at least a portion of the medical cylinder is supplied to the holding member via the funnel, for example, sequentially capturing successive loops of the medical cylinder held therein, and the medical cylinder is held between the holding members via friction (or is held between the holding member and an inner surface of one of the outer members via friction). The holding members are compressible, and when the medical cylinder is pushed into the device, the medical cylinder slides between the holding members and is held by compression of the holding members against the more rigid outer member. When a portion of the medical cylinder is pulled out of the holder during use of the cylinder during a procedure, by pulling on the medical cylinder, when a portion of the medical cylinder is released, that portion can be cleaned by the two holding members. In one or more embodiments, the holding members can be wetted with a sterile solution or sterilizing fluid such that when a portion of the medical cylinder is pulled out of the holder, the medical cylinder is wetted (e.g., for lubricity prior to insertion into a patient) or cleaned by the fluid.

[0052] In at least one embodiment, the holder can include an outer member without the two holding members, and in such an embodiment, the taper of the outer member captures the medical inner cylinder, which is then held between the outer members.

[0053] The holder of the present application enables a medical practitioner (e.g., a surgeon) to perform a medical procedure that requires insertion of a medical cylinder into a patient without the need for an assistant to hold the external portion during insertion, thereby preventing the medical cylinder from falling or becoming contaminated.

[0054] As further illustrated and described herein, the apparatus and method provide an efficient solution for holding elongate medical instruments (e.g., medical cylinders) of various sizes and diameters (e.g., guidewires, catheters, and thin instruments insertable into a patient for minimally invasive medical procedures). Further, in one or more embodiments, the holders of the present application can hold multiple medical cylinders at once.

[0055] Further, the elongate medical instruments held by the holders of the present application are generally described herein as having a "cylindrical" shape, but the medical instruments can also be of other shapes, including elongate shapes with non-uniform cross-sections and / or dimensions. As used herein, the terms "medical cylinder," "cylinder," and "elongate medical instrument" are used interchangeably, but it should be noted that "medical cylinder" or "cylinder" is a preferred embodiment of the elongate medical instrument.

[0056] A holder for a medical cylinder and its operation method will be further described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. The drawings show one or more illustrated embodiments and / or configurations of the method. The apparatus and method of the present case are merely exemplary of methods that can be implemented in various forms, as the illustrated embodiments and / or configurations of the method can be understood by those skilled in the art. Therefore, the apparatus and method are not limited to the illustrated embodiments and / or configurations of the method. Accordingly, the details of the structure and function disclosed herein should not be construed as limiting the apparatus and method, but rather as representative embodiments and / or configurations provided to teach one or more methods for implementing the apparatus and method to those skilled in the art. Furthermore, the terms and expressions used herein are not intended to be limiting, but rather are intended to provide an easy-to-understand description of the apparatus and method. Further, as used in the present application, the term "about", when used in combination with a numerical value, refers to any numerical value within about 5%, 3%, or 1% of the referenced numerical value, including the referenced numerical value. As used in the present application, the terms "substantially" or "about" or "substantially" with respect to the directions of two objects (e.g., substantially parallel, substantially parallel to each other, or substantially parallel to each other) refer to any value within approximately 0 to 20 degrees of the specified term (e.g., within approximately 0 to 20 degrees of parallel).

[0057] Figures 1A - 1H are various views of a holder 100 for a medical cylinder according to one or more embodiments. Referring now to FIGS. 1A - 1D, the holder 100 includes a first outer member 105 and a second outer member 110. The first and second outer members 105 and 110 can be manufactured from a plastic material, metal, or similar durable material. The first outer member 105 includes an inner surface 115 having a first connecting member 120. As shown in FIGS. 1A - 1D, in one or more embodiments, the first connecting member 120 can be two protrusions or protruding appendages. The second outer member 110 also includes an inner surface 125 having a second connecting member 130. In one or more embodiments, as illustrated in FIG. 1A, the second connecting member 130 is two openings, and the two protrusions (the first connecting member 120) are sized and shaped to fit snugly into the respective openings and attach. For example, in the embodiments of FIGS. 1A - 1H, when the protrusion 120 is inserted into each opening 130, the protruding edge of the protrusion catches on the edge of the opening 130, ensuring the attachment between the protrusion and the opening. In other embodiments, the protrusion 120 can be provided on one outer member and the corresponding opening on the other outer member. It should be understood that in at least one embodiment, the first and second connecting members 120 and 130 can be attached to each other via other mechanisms such as screws, adhesives, press - fit attachments, etc.

[0058] Continuing to refer to FIGS. 1A - 1H, the first outer member 105 also includes an outer surface 135 optionally including a recess 140. In one or more embodiments, the outer surface 135 or, if provided, the recess 140 can be configured to receive an adhesive member 142. In one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 142 is a double - sided adhesive member, with one side adhering to the outer surface 135 or the recess 140 and the other side adhering to the surface of an object. The adhesive member 142 allows the holder to be selectively detachable from the object. In one or more embodiments, the object is a medical drape, and the adhesive member 142 is configured to be detachable specifically with respect to the medical drape.

[0059] In many medical procedures where one or more medical cylinders (e.g., guidewires, catheters) such as those used in cardiac and vascular catheterization are inserted into a patient's body, a part of the patient's body is covered with a medical (surgical) drape. Reusable surgical drapes are typically made of a fabric material that can be washed and sterilized before reuse. Disposable (single-use) drapes are typically manufactured from a non-woven material (e.g., paper-based with a liquid-resistant film). Thus, in one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 142 on the outer surface 135 or the recess 140 is specially designed to be selectively detachable from the material of a reusable surgical drape and / or a disposable surgical drape. The adhesive member 142 is selectively detachable from the drape, but the adhesive strength of the adhesive member 142 is such that it can maintain the state of being attached to the drape and the holder 100 while the medical cylinder (e.g., guidewire) within the holder 100 is normally stored, extruded, and pulled out during a medical procedure. The adhesive member 142 allows the holder to be attached to the surgical drape in any direction or orientation. The outer surface 135 or the recess 140 is flat or substantially flat, so that when attached to the medical drape via the adhesive member 142, the holder 100 is attached to the medical drape as closely and unobtrusively as possible, and the likelihood of the holder 100 accidentally coming off or moving during a medical procedure is reduced. As described herein, the holder 100 is typically described as adhering to a patient's medical drape, but it should be understood that the holder can also be configured to attach to a medical drape or clothing of a medical practitioner or technician, or to other objects such as a table or surgical tray. Further, in one or more embodiments, the holder can be selectively detachably attached to one or more different surfaces (drape, table, etc.) via the adhesive member during use of the holder (e.g., during a medical procedure).

[0060] In one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 142 is any adhesive that is sterilizable and strong enough to be removably reapplied to the medical drape multiple times. For example, the adhesive member 142 can be a sterilizable double-sided acrylic adhesive formed on a transparent polyethylene carrier. In at least one embodiment, the adhesive member 142 is a double-coated medical polyethylene film tape such as 3M product number 1509. One side of the adhesive member 142 adheres firmly to the outer surface 135 or the recess 140 of the holder 100, and the other side of the adhesive member 142 adheres removably to the medical drape.

[0061] Similar to the first outer member 105, in one or more embodiments, the second outer member 110 includes an outer surface 145 that optionally includes a recess 150 (see FIG. 1E). In one or more embodiments, the outer surface 145 or the recess 150 can be configured to be writable. Specifically, the outer surface 145 or the recess 150 can include a material that allows writing, for example, with a marker, pen, or pencil. A physician or medical staff can write in the recess to indicate, for example, a medical cylinder held by the holder 100, or various information about the patient undergoing surgery, such as the size of the medical cylinder (e.g., a 0.035-inch guide wire), the patient's name, the procedure performed on the patient, or the medical staff in charge of the item held by the holder. Therefore, the outer surface 145 or the recess 150 can be a flat or substantially flat surface so that legible characters can be written.

[0062] In at least one other embodiment, instead of being configured to be writable on the outer surface 145 or the recess 150, the outer surface 145 or the recess 150 can be configured to receive a label of a material that can be written on, for example, with a marker, pen, or pencil.

[0063] As described above, the adhesive member is configured to be attached to the outer surface 135, and the outer surface 145 is configured to be writable or to receive a label for writing (i.e., a "writable surface"). In certain embodiments, however, it should be understood that the adhesive can be configured to be attached to the outer surface 145 and the writable surface can be the outer surface 135.

[0064] Thus, as described throughout this specification, in certain embodiments, the adhesive member is configured to be attached to the outer surface of the first outer member or the outer surface of the second outer member, and the writable surface is the outer surface of the first outer member or the second outer member (or the corresponding label).

[0065] Referring to FIG. 1G, in one or more embodiments, the holder 100 further includes two retaining members 155 disposed between the inner surface 115 of the first outer member 105 and the inner surface 125 of the second outer member 130. Each retaining member 155 includes a through hole for receiving the first connecting member 120 and / or the second connecting member 130 when the first and second outer members are attached. In one or more embodiments, the retaining members 155 are adhered (e.g., via an adhesive) to the respective inner surfaces of the outer members and can provide frictional force to the medical cylinder. In at least one embodiment, the retaining members 155 can rotate freely within the holder upon attachment of the connecting members 120 and 130. When the first and second outer members are attached via their respective connecting members 120 and 130, a space for holding the medical cylinder is defined between the two retaining members 155. In at least one embodiment, when the medical cylinder is not within the holder 100, there is no space between the retaining members 155, but since the retaining members are compressible, when the medical cylinder is inserted into the holder 100, the retaining members 155 create a space for the medical cylinder between them. The retaining members 155 are configured to hold the medical cylinder therebetween by tension when the first and second outer members are attached. The retaining members 155 can be made of a foam (e.g., plastic foam, open-cell or closed-cell plastic material, or other soft polymer), silicone, rubber, or similar deformable or flexible material that can securely hold the medical cylinder without causing damage to it.

[0066] In one or more embodiments, the retaining member 155 can be wetted with a disinfectant or antibacterial solution so that, for example, when pulling a medical cylinder (e.g., a guide wire) through the holder 100, the medical cylinder slides along the surface of the retaining member 155, thereby sterilizing or further cleaning the medical cylinder, and sterilizing or further cleaning the medical cylinder before insertion into the body. In one or more embodiments, the retaining member 155 can also be wetted by the user with sterile saline or water for cleaning or wetting the medical cylinder.

[0067] The first and second outer members 105 and 110 and the retaining member 155 can be sized and shaped to fit a particular type of medical cylinder, and in particular, fit medical cylinders of various sizes. For example, in the case of a guide wire, the first and second outer members 105 and 110 and the retaining member 155 can be sized and shaped to securely hold, for example, a 0.035 guide wire (a guide wire with a diameter of 0.035 inches) or otherwise a 0.014 guide wire (a guide wire with a diameter of 0.014 inches).

[0068] As illustrated in FIG. 1F, the first and second outer members 105 and 110 are tapered from the edges of their respective outer surfaces toward the edges of their respective inner surfaces that define an annular funnel 160 configured to capture the medical cylinder. More specifically, each of the first and second outer members 105 and 110 has respective outer circumferences 152 and 153, respective centers 154 and 156 (see FIGS. 1A and 1B), and respective surfaces 157 and 158 that taper from the outer circumferences 152, 153 to a point between the outer circumferences 152, 153 and the centers 154, 156 that define the annular funnel 160 configured to capture the medical cylinder.

[0069] The funnel shape of the outer member also improves the performance of cleaning the medical cylinder of the holder 100. Specifically, the holding member of the holder 100 holds the cylinder 165 (for example, a guide wire) in a stationary state, but when an operator applies a force such as pulling the wire, the wire can pass through (see Fig. 1H). When the wire passes through, due to the funnel shape of the holder 100, large foreign objects are naturally filtered, and small foreign objects are removed when the wire passes through the holding member. The fluid is absorbed by the holding member, thereby completely cleaning the medical cylinder (for example, a guide wire).

[0070] Figures 2A - 2H disclose another embodiment of the holder for a medical cylinder of the present application, and have the same components as the embodiment illustrated in Figures 1A - 1H, and have the same attributes unless otherwise specified. Next, referring to Figures 2A - 2H, the holder 200 includes a first outer member 205 and a second outer member 210 that can be manufactured from a plastic material, metal, or similar durable material. The first outer member 205 includes an inner surface 215 having a first connecting member 220. As shown in Figures 2B - 2D, in one or more embodiments, the first connecting member 220 can be two protrusions or protruding appendages. The second outer member 210 also includes an inner surface 225 having a second connecting member 230. In one or more embodiments, as illustrated in Figure 2A, the second connecting member 230 is two openings, and the two protrusions (the first connecting member 220) are sized and shaped to fit snugly into the respective openings and be attached. For example, in the embodiment of Figures 2A - 2H, when the protrusion 220 is inserted into each opening 230, the protruding edge of the protrusion catches on the edge of the opening 230, obtaining a secure attachment between the protrusion and the opening. In another embodiment, one outer member has protrusions and openings, and the other member has corresponding openings and protrusions to fix the two outer members together. It should be understood that in at least one embodiment, the first and second connecting members 220 and 230 can be attached to each other via other mechanisms such as screws, adhesives, press - fit attachments, etc.

[0071] Continuing to refer to FIGS. 2A-2H, the first outer member 205 also includes an outer surface 235 that optionally includes a recess 240. The outer surface 235 or the recess 240 can be configured to receive an adhesive member 242. In one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 242 is a double-sided adhesive member, with one side adhered to the outer surface 235 or the recess 240 and the other side adhered to the surface of an object (e.g., a medical drape). In one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 242 is selectively detachable from the medical drape. The outer surface 235 or the recess 240 is flat or substantially flat so as to maintain the holder 200 in a state of being as closely attached as possible to the medical drape and attached to the medical drape in a manner that is as unobtrusive as possible by attaching it to the medical drape via the adhesive member 242.

[0072] The second outer member 210 includes an outer surface 245 that optionally includes a recess 250, and both can be configured to be writable. Specifically, the outer surface 245 or the recess 250 can include a material on which a medical professional can write with a marker, pen, or pencil, so that various information related to a medical cylinder, procedure, or patient can be written on the outer surface or the recess. The outer surface 245 or the recess 250 can be a flat or substantially flat surface so that legible characters can be written. In at least one other embodiment, instead of being configured to write characters on the outer surface 245 or the recess 250, it can also be configured to attach a label made of a material on which characters can be written to the outer surface 245 or the recess 250.

[0073] Referring to FIGS. 2E-2G, in one or more embodiments, the holder 200 further includes two retaining members 255 disposed between the inner surface 215 of the first outer member 205 and the inner surface 225 of the second outer member 230. Each retaining member 255 includes a through hole for accommodating the first connecting member 220 and / or the second connecting member 230 when the first and second outer members are attached.

[0074] When the first and second outer members are attached via their respective connecting members 220 and 230, a space for holding the medical cylinder is defined between the two holding members 255 or is defined between the holding members 255 upon insertion of the medical cylinder. The holding members 255 are configured to hold the medical cylinder therebetween by tension when the first and second outer members are attached. The holding members 255 can be made of a foam (e.g., plastic foam or open-cell or closed-cell plastic material), silicone, rubber, or similar deformable or flexible material that can securely hold the medical cylinder without damaging it.

[0075] In one or more preferred embodiments, the holding members 255 can be made of silicone, and in one or more embodiments, the holding members 255 can include a plurality of protrusions 260 on the inner wall of each holding member. The protrusions 260 can be of various sizes on the inner wall of each holding member and are configured to capture a portion of the medical cylinder (see FIG. 2H). For example, if the medical cylinder 265 is a guide wire, the wire can be captured between the two holding members 255 by the protrusions 260. In one or more embodiments, the protrusions 260 increase in size and density as they move from the outer edge of the inner wall of each holding member 225 towards the center of each holding member 255. By making the size of the protrusions variable, the holding force on the cylinder (e.g., guide wire) can be increased or decreased according to the diameter of the cylinder and the depth to which the operator pushes the cylinder into the holder 200. Although shown as circular in the exemplary embodiments of FIGS. 2F - 2H, in one or more embodiments, the protrusions 260 can be of any geometric shape, such as square, triangular, elliptical, or combinations thereof.

[0076] In one or more embodiments, the retaining member 255 can be adhered (e.g., via an adhesive) to each inner surface of the outer members. In at least one embodiment, the retaining member 255 can rotate freely within the holder by attachment of the connecting members 220 and 230.

[0077] In one or more embodiments, when pulling a medical cylinder (e.g., a guide wire) through the holder 200, the retaining member 255 can be wetted with a disinfectant or antibacterial solution so that the medical cylinder slides along the surface of the retaining member 255, thereby enabling the medical cylinder to be sterilized or further cleaned before being inserted into the body. In one or more embodiments, the retaining member 255 can also be wetted by the user with sterile saline or water for cleaning or wetting the medical cylinder.

[0078] The first and second outer members 205 and 210, the retaining member 255, and the protrusion 260 can be sized and shaped to fit a particular type of medical cylinder, particularly medical cylinders of various sizes. For example, in the case of a guide wire, the first and second outer members 205 and 210, the retaining member 255, and the protrusion 260 can each be sized and shaped to firmly hold guide wires of unique, different, or various ranges of diameters.

[0079] Figures 3A - 3J disclose another embodiment of the holder for the medical cylinder of the present application and have components similar to those of the embodiments illustrated in Figures 1A - 1H and Figures 2A - 2H. Next, referring to Figures 3A - 3J, the holder 300 includes a first outer member 305 and a second outer member 310 that can be manufactured from a plastic material or metal, or a similar durable material. In one or more embodiments, each of the first and second outer members 305 and 310 may include a plurality of extensions 312 at their respective edges. Due to the extensions 312, the holder 300 can be balanced or stood vertically on a flat surface such as a surface including an operating table or a medical drape (see the right - hand image in Figure 3J). These extensions 312 are also used to facilitate the rotation and locking of the device, as will be described in more detail below. In one or more embodiments, each of the outer members 305 and 310 can include two to four extensions 312. In an exemplary embodiment, as shown in Figures 3A - 3J, each of the outer members 305 and 310 can include four extensions 312. In at least one embodiment, the edges of the extensions 312 and the adjacent edges of the outer members 305 and 310 include an adhesive for attaching to a medical drape, and the holder 300 can be stabilized in an upright position on the medical drape.

[0080] The first outer member 305 includes an inner surface 315 having a first connecting member 320. As shown in Figure 3B, in one or more embodiments, the first connecting member 320 is a protruding member (a "key").

[0081] Similarly, the second outer member 310 also includes an inner surface 325 that includes a second connecting member 330. In one or more embodiments, as shown in FIG. 3B, the second connecting member 330 includes a notch (a “lock”) configured to securely receive a protruding member or key. By inserting the protruding member 320 into the notch 330 and then rotating either the first outer member or the second outer member in a first direction (e.g., clockwise), the first outer member 305 and the second outer member 310 can be securely attached to each other in a locked position (closed position, FIG. 3F). Similarly, after locking, in one or more embodiments, the first outer member 305 and the second outer member 310 can be unlocked (unlocked position, FIG. 3G) by rotating either the first outer member or the second outer member in a second direction (e.g., counterclockwise). In one or more embodiments, locking (or unlocking) of the attachment between the first and second outer members 305 and 310 is achieved by rotating either the first or second outer member a 1 / 8 turn in a specified direction.

[0082] In one or more embodiments, the protruding member or key can include a compressible member 332 configured to assist in releasing the first outer member and the second outer member from the locked position when either the first outer member or the second outer member is rotated in the second direction. The compressible member 332 is disposed at the center of the protruding member (the first connecting member 320) and enables an assisted release from the locked state to the unlocked state when the holder is rotated in the second direction (e.g., counterclockwise). In one or more embodiments, the compressible member is a spring, as illustrated in FIGS. 3G and 3I.

[0083] Continuing to refer to FIGS. 3A - 3I, the first outer member 305 also includes an outer surface 335 that optionally includes a recess 340. The outer surface 335 or the recess 340 can be configured to receive an adhesive member 342. In one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 342 is a double - sided adhesive member, with one side adhered to the outer surface 335 or the recess 340 and the other side adhered to the surface of an object (e.g., a medical drape). In one or more embodiments, the adhesive member 342 is selectively detachable with respect to a medical drape (e.g., a reusable medical drape or a disposable drape). The outer surface 335 or the recess 340 is flat or substantially flat so that by attaching to the medical drape via the adhesive member 342, the holder 300 can be attached to the medical drape in a state that is as close and unobtrusive as possible.

[0084] Similarly, the second outer member 310 includes an outer surface 345 that optionally includes a recess 350, and the outer surface 345 or the recess 350 is configured to be writable. Specifically, the outer surface 345 or the recess 350 can include a material that can be written on, for example, with a marker, pen, or pencil. The outer surface 345 or the recess 350 can be a flat or substantially flat surface so that legible characters can be written on it. In at least one other embodiment, instead of being configured to write characters on the outer surface 345 or the recess 350, it can also be configured to attach a label of a material on which characters can be written to the outer surface 345 or the recess 350.

[0085] Referring particularly to FIG. 3I, in one or more embodiments, the holder 300 further includes two retaining members 355 disposed between the inner surface 315 of the first outer member 305 and the inner surface 325 of the second outer member 330. Each retaining member 355 includes a through - hole for accommodating the first connecting member 320 and / or the second connecting member 330 when the first and second outer members are attached.

[0086] When the first and second outer members are attached via their respective connecting members 320 and 330, a space for holding the medical cylinder is defined between the two holding members 355 or is defined between the holding members 255 upon insertion of the medical cylinder. The holding members 355 are configured to hold the medical cylinder therebetween by tension when the first and second outer members are attached. The holding members 355 can be made of a foam (e.g., plastic foam or open-cell or closed-cell plastic material), silicone, rubber, or similar deformable or flexible material that can securely hold the medical cylinder without damaging it. In one or more preferred embodiments, the holding members 355 can be made of silicone.

[0087] In one or more embodiments, when pulling a medical cylinder (e.g., a guide wire) through the holder 300, the holding members 355 can be wetted with a disinfectant or antibacterial solution so that the medical cylinder slides along the surface of the holding members 355, thereby allowing the medical cylinder to be sterilized or further cleaned before inserting the medical cylinder into the body. In one or more embodiments, the holding members 355 can also be wetted by the user with sterile saline or water for cleaning or wetting the medical cylinder.

[0088] In one or more embodiments, the first and second outer members 305 and 310 and the holding members 355 can be sized and shaped to fit a particular type of medical cylinder, particularly medical cylinders of various sizes. For example, in the case of a guide wire, the first and second outer members 305 and 210 and the holding members 355 can be sized and shaped to firmly hold guide wires of their own, different, or various ranges of diameters.

[0089] As illustrated in FIGS. 3F-3G, the first and second outer members 305 and 310 are tapered from the edges of their respective outer surfaces toward the edges of their respective inner surfaces that define an annular funnel 360 configured to capture a medical cylinder. More specifically, as shown in FIG. 3G, each of the first and second outer members 305 and 310 has respective outer perimeters 352 and 353, respective centers 354 and 356 (see FIG. 3B), and respective surfaces 357, 358 that taper from the outer perimeters 352, 353 to a point located between the outer perimeters 352, 353 and the centers 354, 356 to define an annular funnel 360 configured to capture a medical cylinder.

[0090] When the first outer member 305 and the second outer member 310 are attached to each other in a position where the lock is released (unlocked position - FIG. 3G), a medical cylinder can be fed into the space between the holding members 355 via the annular funnel 360. When the first outer member 305 and the second outer member 310 are attached to each other in a position where they are locked to each other (closed position - FIG. 3F), the holding members 355 provide a more secure gripping force on the medical cylinder.

[0091] The funnel shape of the outer member also improves the performance of cleaning the medical cylinder of the holder 300. More specifically, as illustrated in FIGS. 3F-3G, the holding member of the holder 300 grips a cylinder 365 (e.g., a guide wire) in a stationary state, but when an operator applies a force such as pulling the wire, the wire can pass through. When the wire passes through, due to the funnel shape of the holder 300, large foreign objects are naturally filtered, and small foreign objects are removed when the wire passes through the holding member.

[0092] Accordingly, the holder of the present application can fix and release a medical cylinder (e.g., a guide wire, a catheter) without the user directly touching the holder. That is, when the holder is attached to a surgical drape, the user can push a cylinder (e.g., a wire) into the holder (e.g., via a funnel) without the need to physically open the outer member or even touch the holder, and the holder holds the wire. In this way, the holder of the present application can hold the cylinder and passively feed it out when the doctor inserts it into the patient.

[0093] In at least one other embodiment, the holder can be integrated into the surgical drape, thereby eliminating the need for an adhesive. In one or more embodiments, the holder may include an additional flat surface attached to the edge of the first outer member. This flat surface can include an adhesive on the bottom surface for attachment to the drape so that the holder stands vertically when attached to the drape, or for attachment to a table or area when storing the medical cylinder away from the patient when not in use.

[0094] Exemplary embodiments of attaching a holder to a medical drape are shown in FIGS. 4A-4C. Specifically, FIG. 4A shows a general attachment of an adhesive member on the outer surface or recess of a holder 100 / 200 / 300 as described herein, whereby the holder adheres to the medical drape and lies flat. In at least one embodiment, as described above and shown in FIGS. 4B-4C, the holder 400 may include an additional flat surface 405 attached to the edge of a first outer member by a hinge or other movable connection. It should be understood that the holder 400 may include substantially the same features as the holders 100, 200, or 300 described herein. The flat surface 405 of the holder 400 may include an adhesive 410 such that when the flat surface 405 is pulled down to a horizontal position extending, for example, normal to the outer surface of the holder, the adhesive 410 adheres to the drape 415. Alternatively, the flat surface 405 may be attached to a support structure other than the drape, such as a table, a patient stretcher, or a surgical tray, for use near the patient during surgery. In one embodiment, the flat surface 405 can be hinged to maintain a selected angle between 0 and 270 degrees with respect to the outer surface of the holder and is configured to maintain the holder in an appropriate orientation with respect to the surface to which the flat surface 405 is adhered.

[0095] In one or more embodiments, the adhesive 410 can include a peelable liner 420 for covering the adhesive 410. It should be understood that the adhesive 410 may include an acrylic adhesive that has been subjected to a sterilizable double-sided adhesion treatment, as described above with respect to other embodiments. Also, in one or more embodiments of the holders described herein, it should be understood that the adhesive or adhesive member may include a peelable liner to prevent the adhesive from accidentally adhering to a surface before the holder is used.

[0096] In one or more embodiments, the adhesive can be replaced with one or more magnets (e.g., a pair of magnets). For example, one or more magnets can be embedded in the outer member of the holder or adhered to the outer surface of the outer member. In such embodiments, the magnetic base can be disposed on or within the medical drape, and one or more magnets of the holder can be selectively attached to the magnetic base of the drape. Thus, in this embodiment, the attachment of the holder to the drape is still selectively removable, but no adhesive is used.

[0097] Also disclosed herein is a kit comprising one or more holders of the present application. In one or more embodiments, in addition to the holder, the kit can include one or more labels for attachment to one outer surface of the outer member, a writing instrument (e.g., a marker) for writing on the label, and a removable cover for the adhesive on one outer surface of the outer member. In one or more embodiments, the kit can also include an instrument pad for wiping the cylindrical body. In at least one embodiment, the instrument pad can be a sterilizing instrument pad. In one or more embodiments, the kit can further include a card that enables fixing one or more holders within the package before use, or a card that enables attachment to the adhesive of the holder for storage of the holder after detachment from the drape. The kit can also include one or more medical cylindrical bodies such as guide wires or catheters. The kit can include, for example, cylindrical bodies of different diameters or lengths. The kit is preferably provided in a sufficient sterile package so that it can be brought into the sterile surgical environment of the patient and opened without compromising the sterility of the operating room and the contents can be used.

[0098] Also, this specification discloses a method of operating a holder for a medical cylinder. According to one or more embodiments of this method, the holder of the present application is provided. Next, a part of the medical cylinder is supplied between two holding members. Next, the medical cylinder is held between the two holding members of the holder by friction. In one or more embodiments of the method, the medical cylinder is a guide wire, a catheter, a surgical instrument, or an electrode for stimulating tissue. In at least one embodiment where the cylinder is a guide wire, the method further includes the step of pulling the guide wire to release the portion of the guide wire held between the two holding members, and when a part of the guide wire is released by pulling the guide wire, that portion is cleaned by the two holding members. In at least one embodiment, the method may further include the step of applying a cleaning liquid to the holding members.

[0099] In one or more embodiments, the holder of the present application can further include a fixing mechanism for fixing the cylinder within the holder. This fixing mechanism operates independently of or in combination with the aforementioned holding members that hold the cylinder by friction. FIGS. 5A - 5R show exemplary fixing mechanisms according to one or more embodiments. As shown in FIGS. 5A - 5R, in one or more embodiments, the security mechanism further described below can be used in any of the holders of the present application (e.g., holder 100 / 200 / 300).

[0100] Figures 5A - 5C show top views (left) and side views (right) of an embodiment of the holder, where the second outer member of the holder (i.e., the outer member not attached to the adhesive) has a toggle button on its outer surface, and the toggle buttons (501, 502, 503) serve to selectively lock and unlock a clamp configuration for fixing the wire. Specifically, when one side of the toggle button is pressed, a part of the first outer member (upper outer member) is configured to apply additional pressure to the cylindrical body 565 (see Figure 5C) fixed within the holder, whereby the cylindrical body 565 is further fixed (clamped) between the two outer members. Similarly, when the opposite side of the toggle button is pressed, the part of the first outer member is configured to release the pressure applied by the second outer member. As shown in Figures 5A - 5C, the toggle buttons can be provided in various different shapes with "lock" and "unlock" portions on the opposite surfaces. For example, crescent-shaped (Figure 5A, 501), rectangular (Figure 5B, 502), or a toggle button that is entirely planar (Figure 5C, 503). In this toggle button, the "lock" portion constitutes all or substantially all of one side of the outer surface of the first outer member, and the "unlock" portion of the button constitutes all or substantially all of the other side of the outer surface of the first outer member. When the lock portion of button 503 is pressed, as illustrated in Figure 5C, half of the device is clamped at once.

[0101] Examples of other fixing mechanisms are shown in Figures 5D - 5Q. Specifically, Figures 5D - 5E show a fixing mechanism having a "pop" button 504 integrally formed with the first outer member (upper outer member) according to one or more embodiments. As shown in Figure 5E, when the button 504 is pressed by the user, the button 504 stays in the lower position (locked position) and applies pressure to the cylindrical body 565. Once in the lower position, when the button 504 is pressed again, the button 504 returns to the upper position and the pressure applied to the cylindrical body is released.

[0102] Figures 5F - 5G show a fixing mechanism having a squeeze lock mechanism according to one or more embodiments. In this embodiment illustrated in Figure 5F, the fixing mechanism includes two squeeze buttons 505 at opposite ends of a first outer member of the holder (i.e., the upper outer member without adhesive). In this embodiment, the holder maintains a locked position (i.e., a state where pressure is applied to the cylindrical body held by the holder) until the user presses the two buttons 505 together (i.e., using two fingers) towards the center of the first outer member. When the buttons 505 are pressed together, as shown in Figure 5G, the pressure applied to the cylindrical body 565 by the first outer member is released.

[0103] Figures 5H - 5I show a fixing mechanism including a latch 506 (e.g., a hinge - type latch) for latching the end of the first outer member to the end of the second outer member, whereby the two outer members are firmly pressed against each other and pressure is applied to the cylindrical body 565. The latch 506 can be attached to the end of the second outer member (lower outer member) and can have an opening through which a part of the end of the first outer member fits when the latch 506 is engaged.

[0104] Figures 5J - 5K show a fixing mechanism including a plurality of locking tabs 507 at the edge of the second outer member (lower outer member). Instead of pushing and locking the first and second outer members together on the cylindrical body as done with the fixing mechanism described above, the locking tabs 507 prevent the cylindrical body from slipping out of the holder by being bent upward (see the right panel in Figures 5J - 5K). In one or more embodiments, a plurality of tabs 507 are provided to enable different arrangements of the cylindrical body. In the exemplary embodiment of Figures 5J - 5K, there are four tabs 507, but in other embodiments, there may be different numbers of tabs such as two, three, five, six, etc. In one or more implementations, it is not necessary to use all of the tabs 507 simultaneously, and only the tabs that close the cylindrical body within the holder need to be used. For example, when holding the cylindrical body on one side of the holder, to hold the cylindrical body in place and prevent it from slipping out of the holder, it may be sufficient to bend only two or three tabs upward.

[0105] Figures 5L - 5M show a fixing mechanism in which the first outer member (upper outer member) rotates to lock (apply additional pressure to the cylindrical body) or unlock (release the additional pressure on the cylindrical body) the holder. In this embodiment, the first outer member (upper outer member) and the second outer member (lower outer member) of the holder are not of a uniform shape in that one end of each outer member tapers towards the outer edge while the other end of each outer member does not taper and remains substantially flat. The first outer member is configured to selectively rotate approximately 180 degrees about the central axis 508 between a locked position and an unlocked position. In the locked position, the cylindrical body is held between the matching portions of the non - tapered outer members, and additional pressure is applied to the cylindrical body 565 (see Figure 5M). When the first outer member rotates to move to the unlocked position, the cylindrical body 565 is held between the tapered portion of the first outer member and the flat portion of the second outer member (see Figure 5L).

[0106] Figs. 5N to 5P show another rotary fixing mechanism. In this embodiment, each of the first and second outer members includes gear-shaped protrusions 509 at regular (or irregular) intervals along their respective inner surfaces. When the first outer member (upper outer member) rotates by a predetermined angle (e.g., 30 degrees) around the central axis 508, the protrusions 509 of the first and second outer members are aligned (i.e., overlap each other) or are displaced from each other. When the first outer member rotates and the cylindrical body 565 is held at a position where the protrusions 509 of both the first and second outer members are aligned (see Fig. 5P), additional pressure is applied to the cylindrical body 565, and the cylindrical body is fixed within the holder (lock position). Conversely, when the first outer member rotates and the cylindrical body 565 is held at a position where the protrusion 509 of the second outer member (lower outer member) is not aligned with the protrusion 509 of the first outer member (see Fig. 5O), less pressure is applied to the cylindrical body 565. This embodiment can move the holder to the lock position with a shorter rotation radius or rotation (e.g., 30 degrees) compared to the embodiment of Figs. 5L to 5M, which utilizes a rotation of approximately 180 degrees during locking, as illustrated in Figs. 5N to 5P.

[0107] Figures 5Q to 5R show alternative examples of the embodiments of Figures 5L to 5M or Figures 5N to 5P. Specifically, the embodiments illustrated in Figures 5Q and 5R operate in the same manner as Figures 5L to 5M (where the outer edge is tapered) or Figures 5N to 5P (where the protrusions on the inner surface of the outer member are aligned), except that the first and second outer members 510 are generally rectangular, or more preferably square rather than circular. In this embodiment, the first outer member 510 (upper outer member) is rotated around the central axis by a specific angle (e.g., 90 degrees) to fix a cylindrical body with additional pressure (lock) inside the holder, or to release (unlock) that additional pressure. For example, as illustrated in Figures 5Q to 5R, in the unlocked state, the first outer member (upper outer member) forms an angle with the second outer member (lower outer member) (see Figure 5R), but in the locked position, the square edges of the outer members are visually aligned (e.g., parallel) (see Figure 5Q). Therefore, in this embodiment, it becomes easier to visually determine whether the device is in a locked state or an unlocked state.

[0108] In one or more embodiments, the holder of the present application can further include a secondary attachment mechanism that can fix the holder of the present application to a surgical drape or the user's clothing. The secondary attachment mechanism can be attached (such as integrated) to either the first outer member or the second outer member, and the secondary attachment mechanism is configured to be attached to the drape or clothing. The secondary attachment mechanism can operate independently or in combination with additional methods such as an adhesive to the second outer member (lower outer member). Figures 6A to 6J show examples of the secondary attachment mechanism according to one or more embodiments. As shown in Figures 6A to 6J, in one or more embodiments, the secondary attachment mechanism, which will be further described below, can be used in any of the holders of the present application (e.g., holder 100 / 200 / 300).

[0109] Advantageously, it has been found that by using a secondary attachment mechanism, a healthcare worker can use the holder as a third hand during use of the medical cylinder. For example, by attaching the holder to a healthcare worker's surgical gown (i.e., clothing), when the healthcare worker is working using the medical cylinder, at least a portion of the medical cylinder can be secured by the holder, and then the healthcare worker can remove the holder from the clothing and reattach it to another location, such as a surgical drape, table, or tray for securing the medical cylinder, as needed, allowing the healthcare worker to be free from the patient and the stored medical cylinder.

In at least one other embodiment, the ends 674 of the ratchet mechanism have only one attachment point, and thus there is also only one degree of tightening.

[0112] Figures 6E - 6F illustrate embodiments in which the holder of the present application includes one or more integrally molded teeth as a secondary attachment mechanism. The integrally molded teeth can be used to grip a drape or a fold of clothing and can be molded onto one of the outer members of the holder of the present application. For example, as shown in the embodiment of FIG. 6E, a portion of a drape or clothing can be pushed into four integrally molded teeth 675. Similarly, in the embodiment of FIG. 6F (and FIG. 6A), a portion of a drape or clothing can be pushed into and held within an opening and two integrally molded teeth 676, like a binding tie of a bread bag.

[0113] Similarly, FIGS. 6G - 6H illustrate embodiments in which the holder of the present application can include a hole 677 molded in one of the outer members of the holder so that a secondary attachment mechanism 671, such as a clip (e.g., an alligator clip) for attaching to a drape or clothing, can be attached.
