Claims
1. 1. An apparatus for forming article carriers from carrier blanks, the apparatus comprising: a body having a top wall, opposing side walls, and a first end wall, the opposing side walls and the first end wall depending from the top wall, the top wall defining at least one article receiving opening in an interior surface thereof; the apparatus further comprising a blank alignment device for aligning a blank with respect to the at least one article receiving opening, the blank alignment device comprising a blank receiving recess defined in at least each of the opposing side walls, the blank receiving recess providing a support shelf for a carrier blank, the blank receiving recess extending from a second open end of the body toward the first end wall such that a carrier blank is slidably receivable in the blank receiving recess.

The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an article engagement device in the form of a guide provided by the opposing side walls and the first end wall, the guide providing an inwardly facing surface of the body for engaging the at least one article to align the at least one article with the at least one article receiving opening.
3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the body is unitary.
4. 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the apparatus is configured to apply a carrier blank to at least one article, and the article engagement device groups the at least one article together into a group and aligns the group with the at least one article receiving opening.
5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the apparatus is configured to apply a carrier blank to at least one article, and the article engagement device maintains the at least one article in a group and aligns the group with the at least one article receiving opening.
6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a stabilizing device, the stabilizing device comprising a stabilizing peg extending inwardly from the inner surface of the top wall.
7. 7. The device of claim 6, further comprising at least one break extending from the inner surface of the top wall into the interior of the body, the stabilizing peg extending farther from the inner surface of the top wall than the at least one break.
8. 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the stabilizing pegs extend farther from the inner surface of the top wall than the at least one fold break for engaging the carrier blank prior to the at least one fold break so that the position and orientation of the carrier blank is maintained when the at least one fold break engages the carrier blank.
9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one article receiving opening comprises a tab receiving recess punched out of a portion of the top wall defining the at least one article receiving opening.
10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the tab-receiving recess is located adjacent to at least one break line.
11. 10. The device of claim 9, further comprising at least one break extending from the inner surface of the top wall into the interior of the body, the at least one break extending linearly in a direction along the inner surface of the top wall, and the tab receiving recess being aligned in line with the at least one break.
12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one article receiving opening is at least partially bottomed to provide an article end stop.
13. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one article receiving opening is at least partially bottomed to provide an end stop to restrain movement of the body relative to at least one article packaged by the article carrier.
14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a panel-receiving recess disposed between the blank-alignment device and the article-engaging device.
15. 15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the panel receiving recess is configured to accommodate at least one folding panel hinged to an article engaging panel of an article carrier.
16. The apparatus of claim 1 configured to form an upper engaging article carrier.
17. 1. An application device for applying carrier blanks to a group of articles, the application device comprising: a top wall having a blank pressing top portion; a pair of opposing side walls; end walls; an end opening for insertion of a carrier blank therethrough; a blank receiving passage in at least each side wall; and a registration peg for insertion into a registration opening in the carrier blank, the top wall, the opposing side walls, and the end walls together defining an interior of the application device, the registration peg extending from the blank pressing top portion into the interior of the application device and providing a blank support shelf, and a first distance defined between the blank pressing top portion and a floor of the blank receiving passage that is greater than an operating length of the registration peg.
18. 18. The application device of claim 17, wherein the working length of the registration peg is the dimension measured between the top of the blank press and a distal end of the registration peg.
19. 18. The application device of claim 17, further comprising a blanking panel break or ridge extending from the blank pressing top portion into the interior of the application device, and the working length is greater than a second distance defined between the blank pressing top portion and a leading edge of the blanking panel break or ridge.
20. 18. The application device of claim 17, wherein the blank-receiving passage is further provided in the end wall.
21. 1. A method of packaging at least one item, comprising: sliding a carrier blank through an open end of a forming tool into a blank-receiving recess in the forming tool to align the carrier blank with the forming tool; placing the forming tool over at least one article; lowering the forming tool relative to the at least one article; A method comprising:
22. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the step of positioning the forming tool over at least one article comprises engaging the at least one article with the forming tool to align the at least one article with the carrier blank.
23. 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the step of lowering the forming jig includes pressing the carrier blank against the at least one article, receiving the at least one article in an opening in the forming jig, and receiving the at least one article in an opening in an article holding device provided on the carrier blank.
24. 22. The method of claim 21, further comprising the steps of: raising the forming tool relative to the carrier blank and the at least one article; and sliding the forming tool relative to the carrier blank and the at least one article so that the carrier blank and the at least one article pass through an open end of the forming tool.
