AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing phased array antennas require complex feed networks and structures, limiting their ability to efficiently scan beams in two dimensions and operate effectively in challenging environments such as extreme weather conditions and densely populated areas, while 5G wireless communications face challenges in generating controlled beamforms and avoiding interference.

Method used

A reflectarray antenna system with a deflection grid and layered feed elements that allows for two-dimensional beam scanning without complex feed networks, utilizing metastructures and RFIC layers for phase shifting and power amplification, enabling efficient beam steering and transmission in adverse conditions.

Benefits of technology

The system achieves fast, efficient beam scanning and improved sensor performance in automotive radar and wireless communications, providing 2D imaging capabilities and enhanced transmission speeds in millimeter-wave frequencies, overcoming environmental limitations and reducing computational complexity.

Abstract

To provide a reflect array antenna system having two-dimensional beam scanning.SOLUTION: The reflectarray antenna system 100 includes a second reflectarray 104 having an array of reflectarray cells and parallel to the first reflectarray 102. The second reflectarray 104 includes a first set of feeds 150 along a first axis (e.g., the x-axis) and a second set of feeds 150 along a second axis orthogonal to the first axis so as to scan the field of view along the first and second axes. The second reflectarray 104 radiates the high-frequency beam 140 in the first polarization by the first set and the second set of feeds 150 for reflection in the polarization grid 130, and radiates the reflected beam 142 in the second polarization for transmission through the polarization grid 130. RF beam 144 is reflected by the first reflectarray back toward the second reflectarray.SELECTED DRAWING: FIG. 1A
